:00:12. > :00:15.Good evening.Wakefield Council has become the first council in the

:00:16. > :00:19.north of England to formally oppose the government's plan to build the

:00:20. > :00:22.new High Speed two railway. Councillors voted on the

:00:23. > :00:25.controversial scheme this afternoon. The railway would pass through 11

:00:26. > :00:35.miles of the district, but with no station. Here's Spencer Stokes.

:00:36. > :00:39.It is the ?40 billion railway that the government says will revitalise

:00:40. > :00:44.Yorkshire and help the county 's economy grew by a predicted ?2

:00:45. > :00:50.billion a year. HS2 says councils in the North are behind the scheme but

:00:51. > :00:56.today, Wakefield quoted `` voted against. There would be no district

:00:57. > :01:03.there. Instead, the council wants a better regional rail work and a new

:01:04. > :01:08.airport for Yorkshire. When the council calls for an airport, that

:01:09. > :01:12.is ambitious. We believe the package we have put forward is realistic and

:01:13. > :01:17.deliverable and one that in the long run will make a huge difference to

:01:18. > :01:24.the North. Other Yorkshire councils are broadly in favour but have their

:01:25. > :01:30.own ideas on how the line can be improved. Leeds City Council once

:01:31. > :01:34.building work to start in the North. Sheffield council want the station

:01:35. > :01:38.to be moved to is Sheffield city centre. City of York Council told

:01:39. > :01:43.the government it supports the idea because trains from York would

:01:44. > :01:46.connect to the new line but Bradford is more sceptical. The council

:01:47. > :01:52.leader would like to see better regional services and wait ``

:01:53. > :01:59.Wakefield is now at odds with Labour 's transport spokesman. I respect

:02:00. > :02:04.her views and the views of those MPs who take a different view. We will

:02:05. > :02:09.work together because we want to make a different and we want our

:02:10. > :02:16.economy to grow. We want to start to compete with London. On Friday, the

:02:17. > :02:21.consultation ends and later this year, the government will make a

:02:22. > :02:22.final decision on where exactly the railway and its planned stations

:02:23. > :02:28.will go. Police searching for missing York

:02:29. > :02:31.student Megan Roberts say its most likely she fell in the river after

:02:32. > :02:35.drinking with friends. The 20`year`old was last seen on CCTV on

:02:36. > :02:38.Lendal Bridge in the early hours of Thursday morning. Divers have been

:02:39. > :02:41.in the river today, but officers say the chances of finding Megan safe

:02:42. > :02:48.and well are becoming increasingly remote. Our reporter, Ian White, is

:02:49. > :02:54.in York for us now. Harry, it is incredibly sad to think

:02:55. > :02:59.that this time last week Megan Roberts was out with friends in York

:03:00. > :03:04.enjoying a drink but tonight she is feared dead. Police think she was

:03:05. > :03:10.drunk and fell into the River Ouse so it is part of a major police

:03:11. > :03:15.search. The strongest and most probable line of enquiry being

:03:16. > :03:22.pursued by the police is that Megan, affected by alcohol, has entered the

:03:23. > :03:28.river. Clearly we will not be in a position to definitely confirmed

:03:29. > :03:32.this until Megan is found. Well, the police emphasise this

:03:33. > :03:37.seems to be a terrible tragedy rather than foul play. They urge

:03:38. > :03:43.anyone who may have information to get in touch. There is still a very

:03:44. > :03:44.small chance that Megan may still be alive and her family, of course, are

:03:45. > :03:52.clinging on to that hope. A nursery worker has re`lived the

:03:53. > :03:55.horror of finding a toddler she'd been looking after strangled in an

:03:56. > :03:58.accident on a playground slide in York. Sophie Redhead, who's 25,

:03:59. > :04:01.spent several hours in the witness box. She's on trial following the

:04:02. > :04:03.death of three`year`old Lydia Bishop at a nursery in 2012 and denies

:04:04. > :04:11.manslaughter by gross negligence. David Cameron today refused to

:04:12. > :04:13.apologise over the conduct of Margaret Thatcher's administration

:04:14. > :04:15.during the miners' strike. Recently`released papers suggested

:04:16. > :04:22.the Conservatives wanted to shut 75 pits even though they publicly said

:04:23. > :04:24.they only wanted to close 20. The Prime Minister said Union leader

:04:25. > :04:28.Arthur Scargill was the one who should say "sorry".

:04:29. > :04:33.A flash mob of singers, artists and performers helped launch the

:04:34. > :04:36.programme for the Yorkshire Festival which will herald the Tour De France

:04:37. > :04:46.in July. Events will include plays, concerts and new works of art. Cathy

:04:47. > :04:51.Killick's been finding out more. It is noisy, colourful and wacky and

:04:52. > :04:52.that is just the launch. Performs came to Leeds to publicise the

:04:53. > :05:05.festival. There is a 100`day festival will be

:05:06. > :05:18.for everyone and everybody. It is inclusive and not just high`brow

:05:19. > :05:24.arts stuff. What can we expect? 47 events have been commissioned and it

:05:25. > :05:30.will run for 100 days. Highlights will include the ghost Palatine,

:05:31. > :05:35.dancers will do a cycle dance through Leeds at dusk. Leeds born

:05:36. > :05:38.sculptor will make two new sculptures for Yorkshire and one

:05:39. > :05:52.arts group will stage a pedal powered fantastical parade in April.

:05:53. > :05:55.But that's not all. This lot are called Hope and Social and this is

:05:56. > :05:59.the official festival song. They're created something called a band

:06:00. > :06:04.anyone can join and it will play 12 concerts. The idea is to take part.

:06:05. > :06:08.They will come in their droves and come to our free events and find

:06:09. > :06:20.pieces of fun and activity in places they have never been before. It is

:06:21. > :06:26.Yorkshire 's ?2 million party so be there or miss out.

:06:27. > :06:38.Full details on your local BBC website. For tonight 's weather,

:06:39. > :06:44.here is Mr Paul Hudson. They also called me a weather expert!

:06:45. > :06:55.It will be a bit chilly tonight. Tomorrow, cloudy, cold and damp and

:06:56. > :07:04.patchy rain could fall as light sleet or snow on the hills. Wet and

:07:05. > :07:15.windy once more. Mostly dry with a few light snow flurries and drizzle

:07:16. > :07:22.in places. Watch out for icy patches on untreated services, mainly on

:07:23. > :07:30.higher routes. Cloudy tomorrow and later the patchy rain may become

:07:31. > :07:36.showery. Wintry over the hills. Thank you. Good night.

:07:37. > :07:43.Hello. The next dose of wet and windy weather is due to arrive on

:07:44. > :07:47.Friday from the Atlantic. Today we have had an easterly wind bringing

:07:48. > :07:50.the chill as the threat of icy patches comes to the north where the

:07:51. > :07:56.cloud breaks. More cloud further south. Maybe some sleet and snow in

:07:57. > :08:00.parts of East Wales as we engage the cold air. Temperatures in the

:08:01. > :08:03.south-east are not changing much because the rain keeps going. It

:08:04. > :08:09.will be colder further north, though. Icy patches are possible.

:08:10. > :08:12.More wintry showers in the north-east. Quite a few flood

:08:13. > :08:13.warnings in Tayside. Write to the west of the
