:00:00. > :00:00.Thank you. That's all from the BBC News at Six so it's goodbye from me,

:00:07. > :00:10.Good evening, on Monday's Look North. Calls for Yorkshire's cities

:00:11. > :00:14.to be made safer for cycling. As accident rates go up by a third in

:00:15. > :00:23.just four years, we'll find out why cycling to work is still so

:00:24. > :00:26.unpopular in Leeds and Sheffield. It can feel quite vulnerable so it

:00:27. > :00:29.would help if drivers were more understanding. We'll put these

:00:30. > :00:33.concerns to Leeds City Council ahead of this Summer's Tour de France Also

:00:34. > :00:35.tonight, tributes are paid to a Halifax rugby player, who died after

:00:36. > :00:42.a fight in a night club. A snapshot of Yorkshire mining life

:00:43. > :00:46.as an exhibition of photographs goes on display.

:00:47. > :00:50.And as the Super League season gets under way I'll be looking at who

:00:51. > :00:52.could be giants this season with Huddersfield's Eorl

:00:53. > :01:12.looking very flashy this weekend and there is more rain to come this

:01:13. > :01:15.weekend. First tonight, calls for Yorkshire's

:01:16. > :01:19.cities to be safer for cyclists as the region prepares to host the

:01:20. > :01:23.Grand Depart of the Tour de France. Local councils hope the event will

:01:24. > :01:27.inspire more of us to get on our bikes. The number of cyclists killed

:01:28. > :01:33.or seriously injured in the Yorkshire region rose by nearly a

:01:34. > :01:37.third between 2009 and 2012. So is safety one of the reasons why only

:01:38. > :01:42.about 1% of commuters cycle to work in Leeds and Sheffield. And in

:01:43. > :01:49.Bradford that figure drops to just 0.5% of commuters. In York, cycling

:01:50. > :01:53.is more attractive. Here, 8% of commuters use pedal power to get to

:01:54. > :02:04.work. So how safe are our commuter routes? Here's our Tour de France

:02:05. > :02:08.correspondent Matt Slater. Science`fiction writer HG Wells once

:02:09. > :02:14.said that when he saw an adult on a bike he no longer the for humanity.

:02:15. > :02:21.This is one of a tiny minority here who rides to work, even if it means

:02:22. > :02:25.going off`road is to get there. Leeds is not that different from

:02:26. > :02:31.many cities in the UK and most are not designed with the bike in mind,

:02:32. > :02:34.so most find it quite an intimidating experience. I think

:02:35. > :02:39.they could benefit from everybody trying to be more understanding of

:02:40. > :02:42.each other's point of view and it can feel quite vulnerable so it

:02:43. > :02:48.would help if drivers wearing a little bit more understanding. Only

:02:49. > :02:52.about 1% of journeys in Leeds and Sheffield is made by bike but is

:02:53. > :03:02.that any surprise? In the last four years, deaths and serious injuries

:03:03. > :03:06.for cyclists are up by one third. I set up from the traffic lights and

:03:07. > :03:12.got to this junction, quite busy normally in the morning so you are

:03:13. > :03:16.alert to that but unfortunately a car came towards me and turned right

:03:17. > :03:21.in front of me and I hit the side of that. I ended up on the other side

:03:22. > :03:30.of the card. Took a bang to the head and broke bits and bobs and spent

:03:31. > :03:39.the day in hospital. The driver did not set off that morning saying I

:03:40. > :03:42.will take out a cyclist. Barcelona brilliance inspired recycling gold

:03:43. > :03:50.rush that followed and he was in London today to champion a campaign

:03:51. > :03:58.for more cycling. The one word that encapsulate Sithole is commitment.

:03:59. > :04:03.We will make Britain a cycling nation to rival any of our European

:04:04. > :04:08.neighbours, but for funding, it is treated like a worthy cause getting

:04:09. > :04:13.a lump of cash but no long`term commitment. They have committed to

:04:14. > :04:21.spending nearly ?30 million for recycling superhighway and upgrading

:04:22. > :04:30.the towpath. They are also hoping the Tour de France will inspire us

:04:31. > :04:33.to change for two wheels. Well, joining us now is Councillor

:04:34. > :04:36.Richard Lewis who's responsible for cycling at Leeds City Council, and

:04:37. > :04:47.Paul Osborne from the cycling campaign group Sustrans. Leeds is

:04:48. > :04:54.way behind the national average when it comes to cycling for work, why?

:04:55. > :05:02.Leeds is topographically quite challenging with the a lot of hills

:05:03. > :05:06.but there is not a tradition of cycling and people have depended on

:05:07. > :05:12.public transport, so we are starting from a low base and we can see real

:05:13. > :05:20.change taking place but it is from a very low point and it will take some

:05:21. > :05:24.time. Where do you want to be? We are certainly putting in a number of

:05:25. > :05:30.groups on our cycle network and Riyadh about halfway through that

:05:31. > :05:36.programme, which is creating routes largely away from main roads and

:05:37. > :05:41.quiet roads. That is the strategic network which gets people into the

:05:42. > :05:47.city centre. You have just highlighted the scheme we are part

:05:48. > :05:52.of which will be a real change. Here there's a connection Bradford and

:05:53. > :05:58.Leeds. Is it not down to one thing? There is no appetite for it? The

:05:59. > :06:03.address and appetite and we can see a large increase in the numbers of

:06:04. > :06:12.people cycling, around 50% over the last decade. How do you make Leeds

:06:13. > :06:20.and other cities become cycling cities? It is about making the roads

:06:21. > :06:28.safer and we hear about separating cyclists from traffic. It is also

:06:29. > :06:32.about slowing traffic down. It is also about changing the culture in

:06:33. > :06:39.schools and workplaces to see cycling as something contemporary,

:06:40. > :06:42.healthy and ideal. If we look at Copenhagen, 50% of schoolchildren

:06:43. > :06:49.cycle to school, did we ever see that here? Why not. We have found

:06:50. > :06:53.two thirds of children would like to cycle to school, so for that to

:06:54. > :06:59.happen we have to give the parents confidence that they are safe

:07:00. > :07:07.enough. You have the opportunity to create some cycle lanes, making

:07:08. > :07:12.leads the forerunner of a complete renovation in the way we cycled to

:07:13. > :07:18.work? One of our problems is we are where we are. We have a road network

:07:19. > :07:24.designed around the car, but what we have done so far in terms of

:07:25. > :07:27.introducing new routes and the work in the city centre will actually

:07:28. > :07:35.make the city far more cycle friendly. 20 mph zones are big part

:07:36. > :07:41.of what we are trying to do, which is trying to encourage people to

:07:42. > :07:47.cycle in their neighbourhoods, making people feel comfortable

:07:48. > :07:56.cycling from home to the newsagents and local schools. All schools and

:07:57. > :08:02.Leeds have an offer from us to encourage children to do cycle

:08:03. > :08:07.training. Just quickly, are Leeds City Council committed to a lasting

:08:08. > :08:12.legacy? Absolutely and there would be no point in doing so if we were

:08:13. > :08:17.not. We would look desperately foolish if we were not thinking,

:08:18. > :08:25.what will be the result of this? We want a city that is healthier, and

:08:26. > :08:32.they will be if they get on their bikes. I believe that we will have a

:08:33. > :08:44.real legacy of more and more people cycling. Many of you have been

:08:45. > :08:47.getting in touch, particularly from a driver's point of view. Dave

:08:48. > :08:50.Parkin says, Cyclists can make themselves safer by having lights on

:08:51. > :08:53.their bikes. The amount I see with no lights on dark mornings is

:08:54. > :08:57.alarming to say the least. Jonathan Harrison says, We used to

:08:58. > :09:00.have to pass a cycling proficiency test before we could cycle to

:09:01. > :09:02.school. Bring it back for all cyclists and charge for it.

:09:03. > :09:06.Phil Heppenstall says, The most annoying thing that cyclists do is

:09:07. > :09:10.push to the front at red traffic lights which makes it hard for the

:09:11. > :09:12.motorists to get going and just means you have to overtake them yet

:09:13. > :09:15.again. But Alex Turnbull says, There are

:09:16. > :09:18.bad cyclists and bad drivers. Both should follow the Highway Code and

:09:19. > :09:21.drivers need to calm down when overtaking cyclists. And John Merry

:09:22. > :09:24.says, Forget cycle lanes, cycle paths are what are needed. Total

:09:25. > :09:28.segregation from other road users. As a cyclist and motorist I see the

:09:29. > :09:32.atrocities committed by both sides. And on tomorrow's Look North we'll

:09:33. > :09:34.look at how safe cyclists are on our rural roads.

:09:35. > :09:38.Matt goes out with the newly formed Holmfirth Cycling Club ` and finds

:09:39. > :09:40.out why the boom in pedal power has led them to provide their own

:09:41. > :09:43.lessons about safety. Later on Look North. What a

:09:44. > :09:47.difference a week makes. Leeds manager Brian McDermott is set

:09:48. > :09:49.to meet the man who tried to sack him tomorrow, as Massimo Cellino

:09:50. > :09:53.flies into town. A rugby club is in mourning for the

:09:54. > :09:56.loss of one of their most popular players, killed in a nightclub

:09:57. > :09:59.attack in Halifax in the early hours of yesterday morning. Andrew

:10:00. > :10:03.Feather, who was 38, has been described as a true gentleman on and

:10:04. > :10:05.off the rugby union field. Earlier today a man was arrested in

:10:06. > :10:10.Huddersfield on suspicion of the manslaughter of Mr Feather, who died

:10:11. > :10:23.after being hit by a single punch. Our Crime Correspondent John Cundy

:10:24. > :10:27.reports. Andrew Feather, a warm man who made

:10:28. > :10:34.friends wherever he went. Within hours, colleagues from all over the

:10:35. > :10:37.world were sending condolences. He had gone to in a club to celebrate a

:10:38. > :10:46.victory on Saturday but it ended tragically, and he died from a

:10:47. > :10:51.single punch. They had played together in the Halifax second team

:10:52. > :10:59.on Saturday. Devastated. Stunned does not fit home hard enough. It

:11:00. > :11:05.was a real tragedy and it has really affected every member of the club.

:11:06. > :11:11.The death of Andrew Feather is the latest in a sad but increasing trend

:11:12. > :11:16.of incidents in recent years. One punch may be thrown in the heat of

:11:17. > :11:22.an argument, the victim falls, strikes his head and dies. The

:11:23. > :11:29.police have been repeatedly highlighting the horrors of one

:11:30. > :11:34.punch and drink fuelled deaths. He was the type to intervene in trouble

:11:35. > :11:44.rather than cause it but incidents happen and it is just tragic. He was

:11:45. > :11:49.a close friend and colleague on the field of play. As a man continues to

:11:50. > :11:54.be questioned tonight over the death, friends are mourning the loss

:11:55. > :12:00.of their playing colleague who had been with them on the rugby field.

:12:01. > :12:03.Detectives are appealing for information after an elderly woman

:12:04. > :12:07.suffered severe bruising during a robbery by bogus callers at her

:12:08. > :12:11.Rotherham flat. After pushing the pensioner into her flat, a man tried

:12:12. > :12:15.to restrain the 92`year`old, whilst a woman searched the property.

:12:16. > :12:19.Around ?400 was stolen before the pair left the woman's home in Bawtry

:12:20. > :12:25.Road at just before seven o'clock on Saturday evening.

:12:26. > :12:32.Three flood warnings are in place in our region tonight. People living

:12:33. > :12:35.alongside the River Ouse in York off Kings Staith, Queens Staith, South

:12:36. > :12:37.Esplanade, New Walk, Bishopthorpe Marina, Rowntree Park and St

:12:38. > :12:42.George's Field have been told to watch water levels. Naburn Lock is

:12:43. > :12:45.also at risk. Volunteers are being asked to run

:12:46. > :12:49.ten libraries in Sheffield in order to keep them open. The council says

:12:50. > :12:54.it can't fund them, but volunteers can bid for a share of ?260,000.

:12:55. > :12:57.There have been protests against the plans, but the council says it's

:12:58. > :13:00.increasing the amount of money available. 12 libraries will stay

:13:01. > :13:12.under council control, but some will have reduced opening hours. It is

:13:13. > :13:18.important that the council provides a comprehensive and efficient

:13:19. > :13:21.service so we have equalised the hours so that every community will

:13:22. > :13:23.get 31 hours regardless of where you live.

:13:24. > :13:26.Tourism bosses in York have welcomed the news that visitor spending in

:13:27. > :13:30.the city has exceeded half a billion pounds for the first time. New

:13:31. > :13:33.figures show that in 2012, seven million visitors spent ?606 million

:13:34. > :13:38.between them, with food and drink being the number one area of spend,

:13:39. > :13:43.followed closely by shopping. Tourism accounts for one in five

:13:44. > :13:47.jobs in the city. Before seven o'clock, we'll have a

:13:48. > :13:50.round up of the weekend's sport, and coal mining over the decades, we'll

:13:51. > :13:56.get an insight into mining life as it used to be as a new exhibition

:13:57. > :14:00.goes on display. And coal mining over the decades, an insight into

:14:01. > :14:05.mining life past and present with the new exhibition going on display.

:14:06. > :14:12.Now for the weekend's sport here's Tanya. Football first, and what a

:14:13. > :14:14.difference a week makes for Leeds United. Last Saturday fans

:14:15. > :14:18.demonstrated against Massimo Cellino taking over. Now it seems he's doing

:14:19. > :14:21.his best to win them over and getting ready to work with the

:14:22. > :14:31.manager he tried to sack ten days ago. Ian Bucknell has the latest.

:14:32. > :14:37.Last weekend, the manager and prospective owner of Leeds United

:14:38. > :14:47.whereat odds. Some protesters `` fans protested the sacking. This

:14:48. > :14:52.weekend, he was very much in charge. They won 2`1 and it was clear the

:14:53. > :14:57.manager wants to leave the recent troubles behind. We just want

:14:58. > :15:02.football on the pitch and nothing else. I think the most important

:15:03. > :15:09.thing for me is to concentrate on the staff and players and just doing

:15:10. > :15:12.my job and what will be will be. He did his best to build bridges and

:15:13. > :15:29.then an interview with a national paper, he said...

:15:30. > :15:35.But after a decade of false dawns and frustrations, fans I spoke to

:15:36. > :15:41.today still needed convincing that he is the real deal. You do not know

:15:42. > :15:46.what he will do and I am still convinced he does not rate McDermott

:15:47. > :15:51.very much. He has got deep pockets but it is whether he puts his hands

:15:52. > :15:55.on them that is the question. People are looking forward to having

:15:56. > :16:01.financial security and after 13 years of difficulty, it is maybe a

:16:02. > :16:09.new era. That remains to be seen however. Tomorrow night Leeds play

:16:10. > :16:15.Brighton but it seems there's still a long way before he and the manager

:16:16. > :16:19.are marching on together. And with the rest of the highlights

:16:20. > :16:28.from our teams this weekend, here's Shamir Masri.

:16:29. > :16:36.Huddersfield halted a run of four successive defeats with a strike

:16:37. > :16:48.from Adam Clayton. Sheffield Wednesday continued their

:16:49. > :16:55.impressive run. In the second half, the second goal and they are now

:16:56. > :17:01.unbeaten in 11. Goals from Chris O'Grady looks to

:17:02. > :17:05.have given Barnsley a much needed when but two Ipswich goals in the

:17:06. > :17:11.last ten minutes saw both teams earn a point.

:17:12. > :17:18.In League one, Bradford came from behind twice to win a point. Goals

:17:19. > :17:28.from James Hansen and Gary Jones levelled the scoring. It finished

:17:29. > :17:31.3`3. Sheffield United recorded their

:17:32. > :17:42.first league win in the four matches. They remain in the

:17:43. > :17:47.relegation places. In League two, Chesterfield are

:17:48. > :17:54.still leaders, coming from behind in their clash against Scunthorpe. It

:17:55. > :18:00.finished 1`1. If you missed any of the action, the

:18:01. > :18:03.Football League Schuller is now on I clear.

:18:04. > :18:11.Meawhile in rugby league there could be another change of ownership at

:18:12. > :18:15.Bradford Bulls. Richard Lamb, the man hoping to buy the Bulls, has

:18:16. > :18:18.told BBC Radio Leeds that the RFL have granted him a provisional fit

:18:19. > :18:22.and proper licence. He says he may be in a position to make a formal

:18:23. > :18:25.offer for the club later this week or early next.

:18:26. > :18:28.Now Super League is back and it started with a bang for the

:18:29. > :18:31.Huddersfield Giants. They beat the reigning champions Wigan in the

:18:32. > :18:41.opening match of the season and the Giants Eorl Crabtree is here. It was

:18:42. > :18:46.quite sum game. Fireworks and a few of them went off straightaway. We

:18:47. > :18:51.knew it would be a massive test for us and we have come out on top. You

:18:52. > :18:56.started last season fantastically so presumably you have your eye on the

:18:57. > :19:02.trophy again this year. No more so than ever, it is more realistic. The

:19:03. > :19:06.opportunities for us around the corner and we know we have to keep

:19:07. > :19:13.playing well and can probably for silverware. It was a fantastic game

:19:14. > :19:20.from the entire squad but he had another fantastic and important game

:19:21. > :19:28.for you. An average importance `` an average performance for him! It is

:19:29. > :19:35.just the whole effort by the team. Danny can work off the back of some

:19:36. > :19:39.great forward players. We have some great players throughout the whole

:19:40. > :19:44.of the team. This year we have two teams being relegated, who could be

:19:45. > :19:51.in the mix? You can grow that at me! I will be shot down for growing

:19:52. > :19:58.names around. We can probably say London? It is a tough one because

:19:59. > :20:02.those teams that in the mix but they will want to do as well as they can

:20:03. > :20:07.but teams like Bradford, it will be difficult for them. And that the

:20:08. > :20:12.other end who will be challenging you guys? The usual suspects but

:20:13. > :20:20.Saint Helens have recruited very well. They could all get working

:20:21. > :20:23.together well, and I think they could push. And you can hear more

:20:24. > :20:28.from Eorl on tonights Super League Show. It's on BBC One at 11.20,

:20:29. > :20:32.he'll be alongside Brian Noble. Now onto the Winter Olympics and

:20:33. > :20:35.Team GB won its first ever medal on snow yesterday with Jenny Jones

:20:36. > :20:38.getting bronze in the women's slopestyle snowboarding. The weekend

:20:39. > :20:42.started well with Bradford's Jamie Nicholls getting an excellent sixth

:20:43. > :20:46.place in the men's final. Jamie's run was watched by his sisters Steph

:20:47. > :20:49.and Sophie in Wakefield and for a while he was in second place, before

:20:50. > :20:54.eventually being nudged down into sixth. He was very upbeat about just

:20:55. > :21:05.getting to the final, with him and Team GB colleague Billy Morgan both

:21:06. > :21:09.making the top ten. If we have the facilities, we could maybe even have

:21:10. > :21:15.more opportunities in the UK for people to learn things like that,

:21:16. > :21:16.and maybe we could see British snowboarders on the podium in future

:21:17. > :21:20.events. Meanwhile you'll have to be up early

:21:21. > :21:22.tomorrow to watch our next winter Olympian. Sheffield slopestyle

:21:23. > :21:26.skiier Katie Summerhayes takes to the slopes at 6am. She won silver at

:21:27. > :21:29.the last World Cup prior to the Olympic Games, marking a successful

:21:30. > :21:32.injury comeback. Finally from me to Yorkshire success

:21:33. > :21:37.in the national badminton championships which were held in

:21:38. > :21:40.Milton Keynes this weekend. Gabby Adcock from Leeds took two titles,

:21:41. > :21:47.retaining the women's doubles with Lauren Smith, beating the top seeds

:21:48. > :21:50.21`10 and 21`19. Then she won the mixed doubles with her husband Chris

:21:51. > :22:06.` making them the first married couple to win the event since 1967.

:22:07. > :22:11.Not many people as crazy as we are. The main thing is that we won and we

:22:12. > :22:16.had fun winning. We want to win a medal at the Olympics and hit the

:22:17. > :22:21.world number one spot. There's still a lot of work to be done but we

:22:22. > :22:25.definitely believe we achieve that. I wonder what it is like at home

:22:26. > :22:37.when they do not when! And that's the sport. Eorl Crabtree

:22:38. > :22:40.is a big lad! The next item is aA new exhibition of photographs which

:22:41. > :22:43.capture miners at work has gone on display at the National Coal Mining

:22:44. > :22:46.Museum near Wakefield. The portraits by award winning Yorkshire

:22:47. > :22:49.photographer Anton Want were inspired by the work of a painter

:22:50. > :22:55.commissioned by the National Coal Board just after the Second World

:22:56. > :23:00.War. Ian White's been for a look. They say every picture tells a story

:23:01. > :23:05.and as they face featured in this exhibition does just that, without

:23:18. > :23:21.People look at this in terms of its past but forget that it is still

:23:22. > :23:27.current. The photographs by Anton Want are more than take on the

:23:28. > :23:31.sketch portraits commissioned by the old National coal board after the

:23:32. > :23:36.Second World War. His drawings captured characters of the day. The

:23:37. > :23:46.photographs are in the same tradition and honour the work my dad

:23:47. > :23:55.dead. `` dad did. He enjoyed doing the portraits of minors more than he

:23:56. > :24:01.did of toffs. The dust than the dirt adds to the character. It is a

:24:02. > :24:07.subject that lends itself to portraiture. What is lovely about

:24:08. > :24:13.this is not only are the portraits on the wall but there are some real

:24:32. > :24:36.feel very privileged that I was chosen to take the picture, so other

:24:45. > :24:51.job and it is really well presented. I like it a lot. Anton Want's photos

:24:52. > :24:54.are on display at the National coal mining Museum until May and will

:25:34. > :25:41.snow is possible mainly over the hills for that commute in the

:25:42. > :25:44.morning. A little better at lower levels but thankfully the weather

:25:45. > :25:47.system is moving through the morning quickly, brightening in the

:26:12. > :26:18.turn out to be the best day of the week with some sunshine and one or

:26:19. > :26:27.two showers possible. They will fizzle out and the main problem may

:26:28. > :26:31.be ice on untreated surfaces. Cloud gathering in the west later tonight

:26:32. > :26:39.as the wind strengthens from the south. The sun will rise in the

:26:40. > :26:47.morning. A dry start but it will not last long with rain coming in

:26:48. > :26:51.between 6am and 9am. Thankfully it is moving through quickly and the

:26:52. > :26:59.afternoon is brighter with sunshine and the scuttling of sleet or snow,

:27:00. > :27:04.possibly even some thunder. You may imagine it will feel cold with the

:27:05. > :27:10.strength of the wind drawing temperatures back to five Celsius.
