:00:11. > :00:15.Good evening. There are calls for Yorkshire's

:00:16. > :00:23.cities to be made safer for cyclists. Local authorities are

:00:24. > :00:27.hoping hosting the Tour de France will inspire more of us to get on

:00:28. > :00:30.our bikes. But the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured

:00:31. > :00:34.in our region rose by nearly a third between 2009 and 2012. So is safety

:00:35. > :00:38.one of the reasons why only about 1% of commuters cycle to work in Leeds

:00:39. > :00:47.and Sheffield? In Bradford that figure drops to 0.5%. In York 8% of

:00:48. > :00:49.commuters use pedal power. Our Tour de France correspondent Matt Slater

:00:50. > :00:53.has more. Science fiction writer HG Wells once

:00:54. > :00:57.said that when he saw an adult on a bike he no longer despaired for

:00:58. > :01:01.humanity. HG would have liked this woman. She's one of a tiny minority

:01:02. > :01:09.in Leeds who rides to work, even if that means going off`road to get

:01:10. > :01:11.there. But is Leeds so bike unfriendly?

:01:12. > :01:15.It's not that different from other cities in the UK. Most of them are

:01:16. > :01:18.not designed with the bike in mind. We would benefit from each being

:01:19. > :01:22.more understanding of the other's point of view. On a bike it does

:01:23. > :01:26.feel quite vulnerable so it would help if drivers are a little bit

:01:27. > :01:29.more understanding of how it feels to be on a bike.

:01:30. > :01:33.Only about 1% of journeys in Leeds or Sheffield are made by bike. Is

:01:34. > :01:41.that any surprise when you consider the safety record? In the last four

:01:42. > :01:45.years deaths are up by a third. I set off from the traffic lights

:01:46. > :01:49.and gotto this junction. It is normally quite busy so you are alert

:01:50. > :01:53.to that. Unfortunately, there was a car coming towards me that turned

:01:54. > :02:03.right and I hit that and hit my head and broke bits and bobs.

:02:04. > :02:06.To be fair to Yorkshire's leaders they have committed to spend nearly

:02:07. > :02:09.?30 million on a cycle superhighway between Bradford and Leeds and

:02:10. > :02:18.upgrading the canal towpath towards Shipley. We can see real change

:02:19. > :02:21.taking place but it is from a very low point.

:02:22. > :02:26.It will take some time to get us where we want to be. 20 mile an hour

:02:27. > :02:29.zones are a big part of what were trying to do which is trying to

:02:30. > :02:33.encourage people to cycle in their neighbourhoods. It is not just about

:02:34. > :02:37.people in Lycra who are keen to cycle into work. It is about making

:02:38. > :02:39.people feel comfortable cycling from home to the newsagents or to the

:02:40. > :02:43.local school. They also hope the Tour de France

:02:44. > :02:47.will inspire us to swap four wheels for two but to many the idea of

:02:48. > :02:55.turning the region's great city into a cycling paradise is as far fetched

:02:56. > :02:59.as Wells' War Of The Worlds. Halifax rugby union club has been

:03:00. > :03:02.mourning the death of one of their players who was killed in a

:03:03. > :03:06.nightclub attack in Halifax. Andrew Feather, who was 38, was felled and

:03:07. > :03:12.killed by a single punch at Liquid in the town yesterday. He's been

:03:13. > :03:16.described as a true gentleman on and off the rugby union field. A

:03:17. > :03:20.25`year`old man is being questioned on suspicion of manslaughter.

:03:21. > :03:23.A new exhibition of photographs which capture miners at work has

:03:24. > :03:28.gone on display at the National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield. The

:03:29. > :03:31.portraits were inspired by the work of a painter commissioned by the

:03:32. > :03:44.Coal Board after the Second World War. Ian White's been for a look.

:03:45. > :03:47.They say every picture tells a story and every face in this new

:03:48. > :03:53.exhibition does just that without the need for words. A snapshot of

:03:54. > :04:00.working life in the last deep pits in Yorkshire. We wanted to records

:04:01. > :04:07.the industry. People forget that it is still very

:04:08. > :04:20.current. The portraits by Anton Want were

:04:21. > :04:26.commissioned by the Coal Board. The pet dust and the dirt at

:04:27. > :04:35.something to the character. It is a subject which lends itself to

:04:36. > :04:40.photography. What is lovely is that there are some real life exhibits

:04:41. > :04:44.here as well. That is you. You wouldn't believe

:04:45. > :04:48.it. He's done a fantastic job.

:04:49. > :04:57.I couldn't understand that that could actually be leave. The photos

:04:58. > :05:00.are on display until early May. At the Winter Olympics, we've heard

:05:01. > :05:03.tonight that slopestyle skier James Woods suffered a hip injury during

:05:04. > :05:09.training on Friday but he will compete in the slopestyle event on

:05:10. > :05:12.Thursday. Our next Olympian in action is Sheffield skier Katie

:05:13. > :05:18.Summerhayes who takes to the slopes at 6am. She won silver at the last

:05:19. > :05:24.World Cup prior to the Olympic Games, marking a successful injury

:05:25. > :05:27.comeback. Don't forget the Superleague Show

:05:28. > :05:33.returns tonight on BBC One. Join Tanya at 11:25pm for highlights of

:05:34. > :05:36.Huddersfield's win over Wigan. We'll get the weather in a moment

:05:37. > :05:39.but three flood warnings are in place in our region tonight. People

:05:40. > :05:42.living alongside the River Ouse in York off Kings Staith, Queens

:05:43. > :05:45.Staith, South Esplanade, New Walk, Bishopthorpe Marina, Rowntree Park

:05:46. > :05:54.and St George's Field have been told to watch water levels. Naburn Lock

:05:55. > :05:58.is also at risk. Paul's here now. Paul, you've been

:05:59. > :06:01.doing some research looking at the current flooding in the south of

:06:02. > :06:09.England. It's received lots of attention.

:06:10. > :06:14.The pictures are pretty dramatic on the television but when you look at

:06:15. > :06:27.the numbers of flooded properties it sheds a different light.

:06:28. > :06:45.Compare these numbers with one early night in December.

:06:46. > :07:01.Lots more rain to come right across the UK. It is fairly quiet out there

:07:02. > :07:06.at the moment. One to showers possible. Temperatures close to

:07:07. > :07:13.freezing point so there will be some icy surfaces. Tomorrow will start

:07:14. > :07:21.trying but the rain will soon be enter the Pennines and turning to

:07:22. > :07:28.snow over the hills. There will be sunny spells and a scattering of

:07:29. > :07:32.wintry showers. More Lane later on Wednesday with the risk of severe

:07:33. > :07:36.gales on Wednesday night. That's it from us.

:07:37. > :07:44.Good evening. You have my permission to complain about too many repeats

:07:45. > :07:48.with the British weather at the moment because yet again it looks as

:07:49. > :07:53.though our winter weather is set to continue with a repeat of last week.

:07:54. > :07:57.Sunny spells and scattered showers today and this is the next area of

:07:58. > :08:06.low pressure pushing in from the west. It influences our weather for

:08:07. > :08:13.the rest of the week. More rain to come and gales and severe gales to

:08:14. > :08:21.come. Ice is a possible risk. That means a cumulative total perhaps or

:08:22. > :08:25.40-70 millimetres and that is an extra two to three inches. It will

:08:26. > :08:30.exacerbate the flooding we have already got across England at the

:08:31. > :08:36.moment. The cloud, wind and rain is already pushing in from the west.

:08:37. > :08:41.There will be a widespread frost. Ice could be a problem first thing

:08:42. > :08:46.in Northern Ireland. Snow in the hills and maybe in the North East of

:08:47. > :08:52.Scotland we could see snow at lower levels. Rain through northern

:08:53. > :08:58.England and Wales and Somerset. Some of that rain could be quite intense

:08:59. > :09:02.coupled with squally, gusty winds on exposed coasts. In the east it

:09:03. > :09:09.starts off relatively dry, but it will not be long before the wind and

:09:10. > :09:14.the rain spreads further east. Up into the North the snow showers

:09:15. > :09:19.continue on the hills, but by the end of the afternoon we could see

:09:20. > :09:25.wet snow even at lower levels. A cold day. There is a potential for

:09:26. > :09:30.some snow showers at lower levels across England and Wales on Tuesday

:09:31. > :09:34.night and into Wednesday. On Wednesday it is this area of low

:09:35. > :09:41.pressure which is the main factor in Wednesday's weather. More wet and

:09:42. > :09:46.windy weather. An early amber warning has already been issued from

:09:47. > :09:50.the South West. Severe gales are likely as we continue to see some

:09:51. > :09:56.very wet weather coming into central and southern areas. The strongest

:09:57. > :09:59.winds follow in behind those showers. In Scotland you are

:10:00. > :10:01.probably wondering what the
