:00:00. > :00:08.Good evening and welcome to Look North.

:00:09. > :00:11.Tonight: Did doctors fail to spot the signs? Vicky Liggatt died of

:00:12. > :00:15.breast cancer last week, despite seeking help from GPs at least five

:00:16. > :00:18.times. Now her family want answers. Also tonight: We have all the highs

:00:19. > :00:30.and lows of a Sheffield teenager's Olympic medal attempts.

:00:31. > :00:37.And why 30 years after the Miners' Strike, Brassed Off is still pulling

:00:38. > :00:40.in the crowds in Yorkshire. A very disturbed 24 hours to come

:00:41. > :00:42.with the risk of snow showers tonight and heavy rain tomorrow but

:00:43. > :00:57.the main focus is the severe gales. Welcome to the programme. The family

:00:58. > :01:00.of a woman who died last week say she was let down by doctors who

:01:01. > :01:03.failed to spot that her breast cancer had returned. Vicky Liggatt

:01:04. > :01:07.sought help from her local surgery at least five times but her parents

:01:08. > :01:11.say they didn't realise how unwell she was.

:01:12. > :01:13.Last year the same surgery in Staveley near Chesterfield was

:01:14. > :01:17.criticised by the Care Quality Commission after a number of

:01:18. > :01:20.complaints. Now NHS England is investigating Vicky's death. Our

:01:21. > :01:29.Health Correspondent Jamie Coulson reports.

:01:30. > :01:33.Vicky Liggatt died last Wednesday. The breast cancer she thought she

:01:34. > :01:38.had beaten in 2012 had returned, spreading to every part of her body.

:01:39. > :01:42.Her family believes you was let down by doctors who should have spotted

:01:43. > :01:51.it had returned. I had to watch my daughter tell her

:01:52. > :01:58.son that she was dying within two weeks. Then I had got to go and tell

:01:59. > :02:05.my grandson that his mother had died.

:02:06. > :02:10.This video was taken in the days before Becky did. She can be seen

:02:11. > :02:18.talking about the preparations for her funeral.

:02:19. > :02:26.I want to say goodbye and everything.

:02:27. > :02:30.Becky was diagnosed in 2011 but was given the all clear in 2012. ``

:02:31. > :02:46.Vicky. It was only following a routine

:02:47. > :02:53.checkup in January that it became clear the cancer had returned.

:02:54. > :02:59.The GP should have spotted that things were seriously wrong. They

:03:00. > :03:06.can't have checked back on her records.

:03:07. > :03:08.Last year, the GP practice was criticised by the Care Quality

:03:09. > :03:13.Commission about the standards of care.

:03:14. > :03:19.I am very concerned about the care that people in Staveley are

:03:20. > :03:27.receiving and this is the most serious in a number of examples. I

:03:28. > :03:36.want to see services improving in Staveley and the wider NHS community

:03:37. > :03:41.improving. The medical group were Vicky went

:03:42. > :03:47.say they cannot comment at the moment. The hospital that treated

:03:48. > :03:56.her seedy treated her symptoms and referred her back to her GP.

:03:57. > :04:03.Vicky's funeral will take place next week, he funeral her family believe

:04:04. > :04:07.should have been years away. Next tonight: Why are Yorkshire's

:04:08. > :04:10.schools bottom of the league? Teachers and education officials

:04:11. > :04:13.came together for the first ever Yorkshire Education Summit today,

:04:14. > :04:19.after the region emerged as the worst in the country in some Ofsted

:04:20. > :04:24.league tables. Joe Inwood reports. What is education for? That is the

:04:25. > :04:28.question being asked in the conference in Leeds. But it is also

:04:29. > :04:34.being considered in schools like this one in Huddersfield where they

:04:35. > :04:38.need to pass tests is balanced against a more varied approach to

:04:39. > :04:44.learning. As well as the basic skills, children have the

:04:45. > :04:49.opportunity to do her in, wrote their own vegetables and have a

:04:50. > :04:53.sense of purpose within the community.

:04:54. > :04:59.The results of that approach have worked but many of our region's

:05:00. > :05:09.schools have not been performing. In Barnsley, only 22% of schools are

:05:10. > :05:17.rated good `` 22% of children go to schools rated good.

:05:18. > :05:21.The response to that criticism from the region as the first ever

:05:22. > :05:26.Yorkshire Education Summit. Hundreds of leading figures getting together

:05:27. > :05:30.to tackle a problem they do not deny.

:05:31. > :05:35.On a whole series of indicators going back quite a few years, this

:05:36. > :05:40.region does poorly compared with other areas of the country. It is a

:05:41. > :05:46.big challenge but there are tremendous is going on. We have some

:05:47. > :05:52.tremendous teachers and the aim is to use that expertise by moving

:05:53. > :05:56.knowledge around. We want to make the best practice available to as

:05:57. > :06:02.many young people as possible. While there are no easy solutions,

:06:03. > :06:11.they hope today's conference will bring some answers.

:06:12. > :06:14.Later on Look North: Recognising the signs ` the Yorkshire school

:06:15. > :06:20.children getting lessons in how to avoid cyber bullying.

:06:21. > :06:24.Next tonight to the Winter Olympics and for a while this morning it

:06:25. > :06:27.looked as if Yorkshire might be about to get its first medal of the

:06:28. > :06:32.Sochi Games. Our hopes were pinned on teenager Katie Summerhayes from

:06:33. > :06:36.Sheffield. She started well in qualifying for the slopestyle event

:06:37. > :06:39.but, when it came to the final, things began to go downhill to the

:06:40. > :06:45.disappointment of her family watching back home. Olivia Richwald

:06:46. > :06:51.reports. Have the nerves dissipated?

:06:52. > :06:57.Katie Summerhayes is one of Britain's best riders. But at home

:06:58. > :07:04.aunt, uncle and cousins could barely watch. Katie's qualifying heats on

:07:05. > :07:09.the Russian snow went well. She puts it down.

:07:10. > :07:13.The girl from Sheffield was showing the world she was a leading

:07:14. > :07:19.contender. She was through to the finals.

:07:20. > :07:22.Come on! For Great Britain and Yorkshire.

:07:23. > :07:28.Under pressure and in tricky landing conditions, lots of the finalists

:07:29. > :07:34.fell, including Katie. Oh no!

:07:35. > :07:38.Then she had one final run. It had to count.

:07:39. > :07:44.It is all on this last kicker. Nice and simple.

:07:45. > :07:49.It was fabulous but not quite good enough to win a medal.

:07:50. > :07:53.Obviously gutted. I skied really well in qualification which made me

:07:54. > :07:59.feel good but didn't get the end result. It happens, everyone falls

:08:00. > :08:03.and I made two massive mistakes. Just want to give her big hugs now

:08:04. > :08:08.and let her know how well she did. We're so proud of her.

:08:09. > :08:12.She trains is Sheffield. There is no snow so to go out there and compete

:08:13. > :08:18.against people who live on snow it is amazing. She has done us all so

:08:19. > :08:22.proud. Today was disappointing but the girl

:08:23. > :08:36.who learned to ski on dry slopes at the age of six has already tweeted

:08:37. > :08:39.that she is so excited for 2018. Well done, Katie. And we'll have

:08:40. > :08:53.more sport a little later in the programme.

:08:54. > :08:58.Police have charged a man with the death of Andrew Federer. He died

:08:59. > :09:08.after being punched in a club in the early hours of Sunday morning.

:09:09. > :09:12.Traders at Wakefield Market Hall are to be consulted over plans to knock

:09:13. > :09:16.it down. The idea is to replace the market, which only opened in 2008,

:09:17. > :09:19.with a cinema, restaurants and cafes. The plans were expected to be

:09:20. > :09:21.approved this afternoon but instead councillors agreed to an eight`week

:09:22. > :09:24.consultation period. Traders have already told Look North they'll

:09:25. > :09:27.fight against the proposals. A Leeds bus operator is promoting

:09:28. > :09:30.plans for what it claims to be a cheaper alternative to the proposed

:09:31. > :09:35.multimillion pound trolleybus scheme for the city. First Bus says its

:09:36. > :09:39."new bus for Leeds" project could also be introduced in less time. The

:09:40. > :09:43.council claims the electric bus would cut congestion and improve

:09:44. > :09:47.journey times. A public consultation into the project will begin in

:09:48. > :09:50.April. A footbridge over a main road in

:09:51. > :09:54.Doncaster has been destroyed by a crane on the back of a lorry. The

:09:55. > :09:57.driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the crash at

:09:58. > :10:00.11am this morning. Cleveland Street will remain closed in both

:10:01. > :10:03.directions tonight while the bridge is removed. Diversions are in place

:10:04. > :10:18.and drivers have been warned to expect disruption.

:10:19. > :10:20.Many of us grew up at a time before Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were

:10:21. > :10:23.even heard of. Nowadays social networking sites are

:10:24. > :10:27.part of everyday life but like any parent I am concerned about what to

:10:28. > :10:29.allow and what not to. We hear so much, don't we, about cyber bullying

:10:30. > :10:33.and grooming. Today is Safer Internet Day, created

:10:34. > :10:36.to highlight the issue and to encourage young people to take care

:10:37. > :10:39.when using the internet. Here's what a group of teenagers from Calder

:10:40. > :10:53.High School in Mytholmroyd told us about their internet use.

:10:54. > :11:05.Sometimes I don't really care. But I think I should.

:11:06. > :11:11.I just stay away from people who I don't know.

:11:12. > :11:16.Don't talk to strangers because you might meet some weird people.

:11:17. > :11:22.The fact that it can be manipulated in the way it has been used by a lot

:11:23. > :11:27.of ad people, that worries media play.

:11:28. > :11:35.Sometimes I get a friend request from people I don't know so I

:11:36. > :11:43.decline it but it is freaky how they phoned my profile.

:11:44. > :11:47.I've heard of people being bullied online but I don't get involved

:11:48. > :11:53.because it will get me into trouble. It is an ever present thing and many

:11:54. > :11:55.of my friends have been affected by it.

:11:56. > :12:01.I think it is quite depressing that someone would do that, it shows they

:12:02. > :12:07.are a coward. They let me on whenever because they

:12:08. > :12:11.know I want do stuff they don't want me to do.

:12:12. > :12:22.They know I'm not the sort of person who would go on dodgy things.

:12:23. > :12:27.Tink Palmer from North Yorkshire is one of the country's leading experts

:12:28. > :12:33.on internet safety. So does she think most teenagers are as clued`up

:12:34. > :12:38.as the youngsters we spoke to? I think they are increasingly more

:12:39. > :12:43.aware and they are pretty clued up about knowing about it but when it

:12:44. > :12:49.actually comes to being online and caught up in that situation it is

:12:50. > :12:53.different things. You might know and understand about it but it is still

:12:54. > :13:00.very easy to get caught up with people who are really intent on

:13:01. > :13:05.targeting young people. How safe are we online?

:13:06. > :13:11.What a question! I would say we are as safe as our

:13:12. > :13:17.knowledge is about how to keep safe. It is not just one person's

:13:18. > :13:25.responsibility. The people around young people have responsibility.

:13:26. > :13:30.What is safe Internet use? Talking to your children or your

:13:31. > :13:35.grandchildren about what they have been doing online since the minute

:13:36. > :13:41.they have started. Just as when my children were younger and went to

:13:42. > :13:46.the cinema or the theatre I would ask them how it was. You start the

:13:47. > :13:56.dialogue as soon as possible. How common is it for it to spiral

:13:57. > :14:02.from seemingly harmless sites like Facebook and Twitter?

:14:03. > :14:10.That is where they will meet them but then they encourage them to go

:14:11. > :14:16.to more private sites. The try and get them away from other influences.

:14:17. > :14:23.Children who are sexually harmed off`line think it very difficult to

:14:24. > :14:26.talk about it but online doubly so because if the tell someone about

:14:27. > :14:37.the images they may have sent then someone may finds the images and

:14:38. > :14:45.then see what has been going on. I would advise young people always to

:14:46. > :14:49.tell someone if they are approached.

:14:50. > :14:52.If you're a young person, parent or carer who wants to learn more about

:14:53. > :14:55.staying safe online there's lots of advice on the Safer Internet Day

:14:56. > :14:59.website. Before 7pm: Is it all in a name?

:15:00. > :15:02.Will Yorkshire Carnegie encourage more investment for rugby union?

:15:03. > :15:05.And we ask if the boom in recreational cycling is leading to

:15:06. > :15:16.more accidents on Yorkshire's rural roads?

:15:17. > :15:22.Let's have a bit of sport for a change.

:15:23. > :15:26.First tonight, the continuing Leeds United takeover saga. Leeds play at

:15:27. > :15:28.Brighton tonight but there will be as much attention on what's

:15:29. > :15:32.happening in the directors' box as there will be on events on the

:15:33. > :15:35.pitch. Prospective new owner Massimo Cellino may turn up to watch the

:15:36. > :15:39.team he wants to take over. Our reporter Ian Bucknell joins us now

:15:40. > :15:52.from the Amex stadium. Ian, have there been any sightings?

:15:53. > :16:03.Not yet, no. It is a chilly night here. We are expecting a crowd of

:16:04. > :16:11.around 25,000, around 2000 them from Leeds. They have sold their entire

:16:12. > :16:20.allocation which is good going for a cold night. We have had differing

:16:21. > :16:25.reports as to whether he will be here tonight.

:16:26. > :16:32.Why the interest in this particular match?

:16:33. > :16:38.He is over in England at the moment for a very important hearing. He has

:16:39. > :16:43.to pass the fit and proper person 's test in order to be able to take

:16:44. > :16:49.over at Leeds United. It is very much in the balance as he has a

:16:50. > :16:56.previous conviction for fraud, although that is ten years ago so

:16:57. > :16:59.might be seen as spent. He also has an overhanging allegation of

:17:00. > :17:06.embezzlement. Away from events in the directors'

:17:07. > :17:12.box, what about the match itself? It is easy to forget at times that

:17:13. > :17:16.Leeds United are a football club. Despite all their problems, they are

:17:17. > :17:26.not that far of the play of lasers. There is a lot to play for. Good

:17:27. > :17:29.luck trying to spot him. Leeds Carnegie will become Yorkshire

:17:30. > :17:31.Carnegie next season in a bid to bring in new investment and

:17:32. > :17:35.ultimately create a sustainable top flight rugby union side in the

:17:36. > :17:38.county. They're adamant this isn't just a re`branding exercise but a

:17:39. > :17:49.whole re`modelling of the sport here for the future.

:17:50. > :17:59.From one Yorkshireman to another. The score for England. Both came

:18:00. > :18:07.through the system but ply their trade elsewhere.

:18:08. > :18:18.What has been missing is having someone at the top, that proven

:18:19. > :18:30.side. If we get it right, and it has to be Yorkshire`wide, it will

:18:31. > :18:34.benefit the whole of Yorkshire. They will continue to play here but

:18:35. > :18:42.this isn't just eerie branding exercise, it is a remodelling of

:18:43. > :18:50.rugby union here in Yorkshire. But they need investment.

:18:51. > :18:54.This does give us the opportunity to create a sustainable and successful

:18:55. > :18:59.premiership club. We will have to wait and see if the county grasps

:19:00. > :19:05.it. Discussions have taken place with

:19:06. > :19:06.other clubs in the area and some have told us they are behind the

:19:07. > :19:31.idea. But not all fans agree. The hope is that one day local

:19:32. > :19:34.players will play in the county. But they will have to convince fans and

:19:35. > :19:38.sponsors that this is the way forward.

:19:39. > :19:45.It will be really interesting to see if that takes off because many

:19:46. > :19:54.Premiership clubs have players from their area.

:19:55. > :20:04.Lots of clubs are jumping on the bandwagon.

:20:05. > :20:09.Yorkshire as a name in young break `` Rugby union have a name and they

:20:10. > :20:17.want to build on that. We reported yesterday about safety

:20:18. > :20:21.concerns on Yorkshire's roads. We have had a big reaction to our piece

:20:22. > :20:24.last night on our big towns and cities. Are they putting people off

:20:25. > :20:28.riding to work or school? But cycling for fitness or fun in our

:20:29. > :20:32.rural areas is booming. Our Tour de France correspondent Matt Slater has

:20:33. > :20:35.been out on his bike in the Pennine town of Holmfirth to ask if

:20:36. > :20:37.Yorkshire's back roads are any safer.

:20:38. > :20:41.It is 9:30 on Sunday and it is wet but not wet enough to put off

:20:42. > :20:45.Holmfirth's new cycling club. The town serves as base camp for the

:20:46. > :20:49.climb up Holme Moss so these are the roads Tour de France fans will flock

:20:50. > :20:51.to this summer. Roads that many fans want to ride for themselves and

:20:52. > :20:56.could be much safer. You do see it regularly. Even on

:20:57. > :21:00.quiet roads even on a Sunday morning you will see someone in a car with

:21:01. > :21:05.the blinkers on, not looking at bikes and cyclists. All they want to

:21:06. > :21:09.do is get from A to B as quickly as they can. They see cyclists as a

:21:10. > :21:12.hindrance. There has been a big focus on the

:21:13. > :21:16.economic benefit of Yorkshire hosting the Tour but if there is to

:21:17. > :21:20.be a health or transport legacy as well, cycling clubs like this one

:21:21. > :21:24.have a huge role to play in cycling that is fun, friendly and safe. On

:21:25. > :21:29.Sunday it wasn't just the hot drinks that were steaming. While Jim Brown

:21:30. > :21:32.and his dad defrosted, I asked them if they ever felt scared riding in

:21:33. > :21:36.Yorkshire's lanes. Sometimes. When you are in a group

:21:37. > :21:42.it doesn't affect you but more when you are on your own at rush hour.

:21:43. > :21:46.Normally it is fine. We tend to ride at the weekends on

:21:47. > :21:50.quiet roads as much as we can but even on those roads, on narrow roads

:21:51. > :22:01.there are issues as cars try to pass and are impatient. We all need to

:22:02. > :22:04.respect each other. The youthful antics of men old

:22:05. > :22:08.enough to know better. It sounds like the pitch for Last Of The

:22:09. > :22:22.Summer Wine but cycling could be a home`spun hit.

:22:23. > :22:30.We are going to be going up that nice little hill on a tandem.

:22:31. > :22:35.Lots of people contacted us saying we want a much more positive

:22:36. > :22:39.attitude about cycling. We will see if we can try to do that.

:22:40. > :22:42.Can you believe it's nearly 18 years since the film Brassed Off was made

:22:43. > :22:46.right here in Yorkshire? It's never lost its popularity and has been

:22:47. > :22:49.adapted for the stage and performed all over the country.

:22:50. > :22:53.I remember one of the great lines from the film. What do you do? I am

:22:54. > :22:59.a miner. A miner? Yes, dodo, dinosaur, miner, remember them?

:23:00. > :23:02.Lost your calling. It explores the decline of the

:23:03. > :23:05.mining industry in Yorkshire and, 30 years after the miners' strike, York

:23:06. > :23:13.Theatre Royal is putting it on stage.

:23:14. > :23:19.It is just a few days till opening night so rehearsals are intense.

:23:20. > :23:25.Brassed Off resonates with audiences round here. It shone a light on a

:23:26. > :23:29.community riven by the miners strike and then destroyed when the pits

:23:30. > :23:54.closed. She is also named after a pit

:23:55. > :23:57.village and appreciates the play's portrayal of mining life. It gets

:23:58. > :24:04.right to the heart of communities. It has got real political and social

:24:05. > :24:08.integrity about it and a beautiful heart and comedy to it. These are

:24:09. > :24:17.real funny Yorkshire people. For the lead actor, the show is a revival.

:24:18. > :24:22.He last played his part here ten years ago. It doesn't seem like ten

:24:23. > :24:28.years but I forgot about what an enjoyable piece it was to do.

:24:29. > :24:32.The whole piece, what it represents and of course the brass band music

:24:33. > :24:39.is fantastic. After opening in York on Friday, the

:24:40. > :24:45.short goes on tour. You can also catch it in Bradford and Sheffield.

:24:46. > :24:53.That looks great. We are going cycling tomorrow. We

:24:54. > :25:00.are starting off where there might be snow!

:25:01. > :25:26.Can I have a picture? I'd like to see the state of your here.

:25:27. > :25:32.There has been some lively showers around this evening. Reports of

:25:33. > :25:39.thunderstorms as well. Keep those pictures coming in. The main morning
