:00:10. > :00:16.Good evening. First tonight, do we have enough prison officers to keep

:00:17. > :00:19.our jails under control? Look North has discovered that numbers have

:00:20. > :00:23.fallen by a fifth in the past few years in four of the regions'

:00:24. > :00:27.biggest prisons. The Government says there are enough staff to keep

:00:28. > :00:30.order. But tonight, a former prison officer warns our jails are becoming

:00:31. > :00:31.increasingly dangerous places to work. Emma Glasbey has this

:00:32. > :00:39.exclusive report. More and more people have been going

:00:40. > :00:42.to jail over the last 20 years. Prisons are almost full, but the

:00:43. > :00:46.number of officers working in Yorkshire 's biggest prisons is

:00:47. > :00:49.falling. Using the Freedom of Information Act, we have discovered

:00:50. > :00:54.that over the last four years in Leeds and Wakefield, 80 prison

:00:55. > :01:08.officers have gone. Elsewhere, they have seen a reduction of 60.

:01:09. > :01:14.One officer says cuts are a big mistake. They have lit the fuse on a

:01:15. > :01:19.ticking bomb. History shows that it will fail. It is a dangerous job and

:01:20. > :01:25.it becomes more dangerous by reducing the number of staff. There

:01:26. > :01:28.was a stark reminder of how dangerous the job is in 2010.

:01:29. > :01:32.Moorland saw one of the worst instances of prison rioting in

:01:33. > :01:37.years. The worst three nights of my career. It was devastating. To feel

:01:38. > :01:40.your place of work has been so violated.

:01:41. > :01:44.The number of attacks and fights at these prisons has fluctuated.

:01:45. > :01:49.Moorland has seen a fall but the government statistics are being

:01:50. > :01:54.disputed. The under reporting is a problem. They are on the increase

:01:55. > :02:00.because, although they put the stats out, not every assault is reported.

:02:01. > :02:03.It all depends where a reportable assault is and it is down to the

:02:04. > :02:11.governor whether they report assaults to headquarters.

:02:12. > :02:14.No one from the prison service was available for interview but they

:02:15. > :02:20.told us they are reforming and modernising to ensure best value for

:02:21. > :02:22.the tax payer. They say they are committed to maintaining safe and

:02:23. > :02:27.secure prisons with appropriate staffing levels. They also told us

:02:28. > :02:28.arrangements are in place to fill posts from other prisons when there

:02:29. > :02:40.are temporary staff shortages. A woman who is critically injured in

:02:41. > :02:44.hospital has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of her

:02:45. > :02:47.two`year`old daughter. The girl was found unconscious with her mother

:02:48. > :02:51.outside a house in the Marshfields area of Bradford on Tuesday morning

:02:52. > :02:54.and died later in hospital. A postmortem examination revealed the

:02:55. > :02:59.girl died from injuries consistent with being caused by a fall.

:03:00. > :03:03.Unemployment in Yorkshire has fallen again. Figures for the three`month

:03:04. > :03:06.period between October and December show there were 240,000 people

:03:07. > :03:13.without a job ` that's 8,000 fewer than the previous quarter. The

:03:14. > :03:15.regional unemployment rate is now 8.6% ` the second highest in

:03:16. > :03:23.Britain. A 22`year`old Bradford man is due to

:03:24. > :03:26.appear at the city's Crown Court on Friday charged with the murder of

:03:27. > :03:29.his wife last November. An international arrest warrant had

:03:30. > :03:34.been issued for Danish Irfan after the body of his wife Ridda Zanab was

:03:35. > :03:37.found in her home in Lidgett Green. Mr Irfan was arrested yesterday at

:03:38. > :03:41.Manchester Airport and appeared before magistrates this morning.

:03:42. > :03:46.Demonstrations have taken place outside ATOS offices in our region

:03:47. > :03:50.today. It's the company that assesses if people with disabilities

:03:51. > :03:53.are able to work. Protestors say the current way of carrying out

:03:54. > :03:57.assessments results in people who are unable to work being told they

:03:58. > :04:00.ARE capable. They claim the "fit to work" tests are "damaging and

:04:01. > :04:05.distressing" and have led to suicides. In a statement, ATOS says

:04:06. > :04:07.it has no input on welfare policy but operates based on government

:04:08. > :04:16.guidelines. He's the man who delivered the

:04:17. > :04:20.Olympics. Some say Sir David Higgin's next challenge will be even

:04:21. > :04:23.greater ` delivering HS2 ` the high speed rail line from London to the

:04:24. > :04:27.North. Today he brought his cabinet to Leeds for the first time and he

:04:28. > :04:29.said he was keen construction SHOULD begin in Yorkshire once

:04:30. > :04:40.parliamentary approval for phase two is given. Olivia Richwald has more.

:04:41. > :04:47.This was a meeting in Leeds to discuss the future of our railways.

:04:48. > :04:54.It was a high`powered delegation of civic leaders and HS2 bosses with

:04:55. > :05:00.just one item on the agenda. The Yorkshire leg of the high two line.

:05:01. > :05:06.This is the newly appointed chairman of HS two. Today he revealed that

:05:07. > :05:11.construction work could start as soon as the government had approved

:05:12. > :05:16.the plans and that melt jobs. As soon as we have the powers to

:05:17. > :05:19.construct the second stage, we could `` should start hearing needs so we

:05:20. > :05:25.can provide a massive regeneration opportunity. Campaigners against the

:05:26. > :05:31.project claim their lives are blighted by the cans `` continuing

:05:32. > :05:39.uncertainty `` uncertainty of the route. I think that through the

:05:40. > :05:43.residents making representations to Parliament and high`speed two we are

:05:44. > :05:48.clear how people feel and we want them to respond to make sure it

:05:49. > :05:53.minimises the impact on people. One of the major gripes is the location

:05:54. > :05:59.of the proposed Sheffield station. Businesses wanted in the city centre

:06:00. > :06:03.but it is placed elsewhere under current plans. This will be

:06:04. > :06:09.considered by the department and they will come back by the end of

:06:10. > :06:13.the calendar year on that. So the location of the Sheffield station

:06:14. > :06:16.will be considered as part of the consultation and the results of that

:06:17. > :06:19.are expected at some point later this year.

:06:20. > :06:22.A quick look at sport now and in League One Sheffield United were

:06:23. > :06:25.away at Gillingham. And it's well done to the Blades who won 1`0.

:06:26. > :06:28.Finally, it's congratulations to Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys.

:06:29. > :06:31.They were named best British group at the BRIT Awards, making it the

:06:32. > :06:33.third time they have done the double at the ceremony with best group and

:06:34. > :06:47.best album. It is almost as glamorous in here

:06:48. > :06:51.isn't it? ! The next 24`hour Wes will become

:06:52. > :06:58.more unsettled with rain already edging in from the west. That rain

:06:59. > :07:03.will transfer eastwards along with a gusty wind. Clearing away through

:07:04. > :07:07.the second half of the night leaving us with damp and drizzly

:07:08. > :07:16.conditions. Staying windy overnight but mild. Tomorrow, further spells

:07:17. > :07:21.of rain spreading from the West so a lot of cloud and windy conditions.

:07:22. > :07:27.Drier and brighter as the g'day `` as the day goes on. The strong

:07:28. > :07:30.breeze will ease down later and temperatures will get into double

:07:31. > :07:36.figures in the morning. Easing later.

:07:37. > :07:42.Friday, a fine day. For the weekend, here is the BBC National weather.

:07:43. > :07:49.We have got rain and wind in the forecast, but the good news is that

:07:50. > :07:55.it is not severe. Over the next 24 hours, some of us will get rain and

:07:56. > :07:59.the winds will be strengthening Not stormy at this stage. This is the

:08:00. > :08:03.satellite picture, you can see the low pressure in the North Atlantic

:08:04. > :08:08.shunting weather fronts in our direction. It has been raining

:08:09. > :08:12.heavily in parts of western Scotland. Tonight, the rain will be

:08:13. > :08:19.splashing its way across the UK The wind will be freshening as well

:08:20. > :08:23.particularly across western areas. Very breezy in land. Most of the

:08:24. > :08:27.rainfall will be across western parts of Scotland, maybe the hills

:08:28. > :08:31.of Wales, into the south-west. The further east you are, the least

:08:32. > :08:39.amount of rain will fall. A very mild night, seven, eight or nine

:08:40. > :08:41.degrees. After a cloudy and wet start tomorrow, the wind will blow

:08:42. > :08:42.away
