:00:00. > :00:11.question is whether the Games will deliver a lasting change

:00:12. > :00:14.Good evening. This is the late look North.

:00:15. > :00:17.The internationally renowned concert pianist John Briggs has denied

:00:18. > :00:21.accusations of indecent assaults on five boys. He told his trial in

:00:22. > :00:24.Bradford that although he was happily married he had gay

:00:25. > :00:32.tendencies but they'd never involved children. Our Crime Correspondent

:00:33. > :00:38.John Cundy reports. John Briggs, who denies sexually

:00:39. > :00:43.assaulting five boys, then aged between 12 and 15 over a five`year

:00:44. > :00:47.period, and admitted to the jury today that he had kept legal gay

:00:48. > :00:52.pornographic material in his home but he said it was just to look at

:00:53. > :00:57.occasionally, a small part of his life. He told the court that he had

:00:58. > :01:03.been happily married for the last 25 years but in the last ten years he

:01:04. > :01:10.had discovered homosexual tendencies and acquired the DVDs. The

:01:11. > :01:14.international concert pianist denies he indecently assaulted two boys he

:01:15. > :01:17.gave private lessons to add his home and three members of the Keighley

:01:18. > :01:25.Sea cadets of which you was president. Today he was asked, did

:01:26. > :01:30.you indecently assaulted the two piano students? He replied, no,

:01:31. > :01:38.never. He was asked, did you indecently assaulted Sea Cadet Corps

:01:39. > :01:41.my drive to London? He said no. In cross examination John Briggs was

:01:42. > :01:46.asked if he could think of any reason why the five boys, now men,

:01:47. > :01:52.would have said things that were not true. No, he said he claimed the

:01:53. > :01:56.allegations were made up in a trip spirit see against him and there was

:01:57. > :02:02.not a scrap of truth against him. The trial of ten macro one, awarded

:02:03. > :02:06.an NBA 11 years ago for his charity work continues tomorrow.

:02:07. > :02:09.A new report claims that many of Jimmy Savile's victims were ignored

:02:10. > :02:12.or laughed at when they first revealed they'd been abused by the

:02:13. > :02:16.star. 26 victims were interviewed by the NSPCC as part of the research to

:02:17. > :02:20.find out why they felt unable to report the abuse at the time. The

:02:21. > :02:26.report also found that some have suffered mental illness since.

:02:27. > :02:28.A vote takes place tonight over Calderdale Council's budget after

:02:29. > :02:31.Conservative and Liberal Democrat Councillors joined together to put

:02:32. > :02:34.forward alternative ways of saving money to those proposed by Labour.

:02:35. > :02:38.The council must save ?12 million next year. The Labour Party want to

:02:39. > :02:40.freeze council tax and save money on contracts. But the new coalition's

:02:41. > :02:43.alternative plan suggests changes including employing more street

:02:44. > :02:56.sweepers, cutting sick pay and reversing car parking costs.

:02:57. > :03:00.There will be no steel city clash to look forward to in the FA Cup.

:03:01. > :03:05.Sheffield Wednesday lost against Charlton who will now go on to face

:03:06. > :03:08.Sheffield United in the quarterfinals. Spencer Stokes is at

:03:09. > :03:14.Hillsborough tonight. How disappointing!

:03:15. > :03:19.Yes, many Sheffield Wednesday fans and also Sheffield United fans had

:03:20. > :03:24.been hoping for a repeat of 1993 when the two clubs last met in the

:03:25. > :03:31.FA Cup. It is not to be. Charlton came here tonight and beat Sheffield

:03:32. > :03:37.Wednesday 2`0. The first goal came after 21 minutes. Charlton scored at

:03:38. > :03:43.about one hour and Sheffield Wednesday thought they had equalised

:03:44. > :03:46.but the goal was ruled to have not quashed the line. In the last few

:03:47. > :03:50.minutes we have caught up with fans leaving begetting who have told

:03:51. > :03:56.their thoughts on the match tonight and also on the quarterfinal clash.

:03:57. > :03:59.It is just one of those things. We are out of the cup but we are

:04:00. > :04:04.keeping in the division. You miss out on a trip to Sheffield United. I

:04:05. > :04:09.would not have gone there anyway, I wouldn't have given them my money. I

:04:10. > :04:12.am disappointed and I think the second goal hit the net and we

:04:13. > :04:19.should have had it. Perhaps they will get through to Wembley. I hope

:04:20. > :04:24.they do get there even though I am a Sheffield Wednesday fan. I am glad

:04:25. > :04:30.for Sheffield United but I am sorry for Sheffield Wednesday! That the

:04:31. > :04:33.game is going to be on Saturday the 8th of March.

:04:34. > :04:36.Thank you. This week Look North is joining BBC

:04:37. > :04:39.teams around Britain to begin coverage marking the centenary of

:04:40. > :04:43.the First World War. Today we've looked at how it affected people

:04:44. > :04:46.right here in Yorkshire. On December 16th 1914 the German navy killed 18

:04:47. > :04:53.people in Scarborough and seven people in Whitby. It left

:04:54. > :05:02.Scarborough and the whole country stunned as Harry has been finding

:05:03. > :05:06.out. Soldiers in York March over the

:05:07. > :05:12.bridge preparing to go to the front line. In December 1914 Britain had

:05:13. > :05:19.been at war for four months and many thought it would be over by

:05:20. > :05:25.Christmas. On December the 16th the might of the German Navy headed for

:05:26. > :05:30.Scarborough, unprepared and undefended. Imagine what it might

:05:31. > :05:34.have been like, this surely is it. The German Navy have sent three

:05:35. > :05:38.battle cruisers up the coast to Hartlepool and they have sent two to

:05:39. > :05:43.Scarborough. The last time Scarborough was invaded was by the

:05:44. > :05:54.Vikings 1000 years ago and the bombardment started just about bang

:05:55. > :05:59.on 8pm `` 8am. 500 shells, some way a tunnel rains down on the town. 18

:06:00. > :06:03.people died and scores were injured. Landmark buildings

:06:04. > :06:09.including the grand hotel and the Scarborough Lighthouse were damaged.

:06:10. > :06:14.It had never happened before to have a town attacked. Many families who

:06:15. > :06:18.look back at their history and find out when they joined up it was after

:06:19. > :06:22.this event because it's so inflamed the public. The bombardment of

:06:23. > :06:26.Scarborough lasted half an hour but the fleet still had not finished.

:06:27. > :06:31.They moved north to Whitby which came under fire and seven people

:06:32. > :06:34.were killed. The brutal reality of the conflict had been brought to

:06:35. > :06:40.British soil and the war was changed for ever.

:06:41. > :06:47.Time now for the weather. It has been lovely and mild today. The

:06:48. > :06:52.warmest day of the year so far. Mild is the theme for the west of

:06:53. > :06:57.the week. Tomorrow will start grey but brighten up nicely. It will be a

:06:58. > :07:02.breezy day. It is breezy out there now with wet and windy weather

:07:03. > :07:06.overnight. The rain is moving to the east and it will turn showery and

:07:07. > :07:12.patchy later in the night. It will stay blustery. A bit of a great

:07:13. > :07:17.start to the day with early rain clearing quickly and it looks like a

:07:18. > :07:21.decent day. Dry and bright foremost of us with pleasant spells of

:07:22. > :07:26.sunshine and a small risk of sharp showers on the hills later in the

:07:27. > :07:30.day. Temperature is not so miles but getting into double figures. It

:07:31. > :07:35.looks pleasant on Wednesday but wet and windy on Thursday before it

:07:36. > :07:37.turns showery. Now for the National forecast.

:07:38. > :07:43.Good evening. We have a spell of wet and windy weather working across the

:07:44. > :07:49.British Isles. Today brought many of us some decent spells of sunshine

:07:50. > :07:53.and it brought us some decent temperatures. In fact, our warmest

:07:54. > :07:59.day of the year so far. At the moment, though, things have

:08:00. > :08:05.changed. This is the gap in the satellite picture. Now, this curl of

:08:06. > :08:09.cloud looks like a snail's shell, it is an area of low pressure that is

:08:10. > :08:12.sweeping wind and rain across us. It's pushed into the west already

:08:13. > :08:15.and is now making rapid progress eastwards, moving into eastern

:08:16. > :08:16.England through the small
