:00:00. > :00:08.Welcome to Tuesday's Look North On the programme tonight: Children

:00:09. > :00:11.turning up to school hungry. As breakfast clubs spring up across

:00:12. > :00:14.Yorkshire, a headteacher in Huddersfield tells us how b`d the

:00:15. > :00:18.problem is at her school. Wd'll find out how the local football club is

:00:19. > :00:23.now helping to feed children. We have three children in ten who are

:00:24. > :00:30.hungry when they come to school very hungry. Also tonight: Farmers

:00:31. > :00:33.in the Dales claim sheep rustlers cost them more than ?100,000 a year

:00:34. > :00:38.` organised gangs could be responsible.

:00:39. > :00:39.Goodbye Gwen ` tributes to the Yorkshire woman recognised `s the

:00:40. > :00:54.fastest knitter in the world. What about this for a fantastic

:00:55. > :01:04.picture? This is a bank of Clyde fishing in over Leeds this lorning.

:01:05. > :01:10.Good evening and welcome to the programme. A headteacher in

:01:11. > :01:13.Huddersfield has told Look North that three children in ten `re

:01:14. > :01:16.turning up at her primary school hungry. Sometimes the children

:01:17. > :01:19.haven't eaten since lunchtile the day before. The school is one of 13

:01:20. > :01:22.in Kirklees that is running a breakfast club, supported bx

:01:23. > :01:26.Huddersfield Town football club In a moment we'll speak to a ftndraiser

:01:27. > :01:38.with the club, but, first, Lark Ansell has our top story.

:01:39. > :01:43.This is the breakfast club `t this primary School in Huddersfidld. A

:01:44. > :01:49.free meal is offered to all children at the school. For some, thhs is

:01:50. > :01:56.their first clue that they have had in 18 hours. Three children in ten

:01:57. > :01:59.are hungry, very hungry when they come to school. Children who have

:02:00. > :02:06.not had an evening meal, who have come to school without having an

:02:07. > :02:16.evening meal. So they haven't eaten anything since their lunch leal in

:02:17. > :02:23.school the day before. It is good to Villa Park tummies before wd do some

:02:24. > :02:28.work. One time he was out on a trip, somebody didn't have their breakfast

:02:29. > :02:34.and they fainted. If they don't have good at home, they can come to Brett

:02:35. > :02:38.this club, have toast, hot chocolate, a fruit pot. This is one

:02:39. > :02:42.of the team schools in Kirklees where the Huddersfield Town

:02:43. > :02:49.foundation delivers food once a week. The charity was set up by a

:02:50. > :02:53.the football club chairman. I go into schools and here horrendous

:02:54. > :03:02.Tories. I thought that the football club could get more involved. On the

:03:03. > :03:06.Monday morning, they might not have had a proper meal since Friday

:03:07. > :03:11.lunchtime. For me, that's horrendous. Everyone helps tidy away

:03:12. > :03:18.before the lessons begin. For some it will be a better start for their

:03:19. > :03:21.day, her breakfast London rtn by the children, for the children, so no

:03:22. > :03:24.one goes hungry. Joining us now is Mandy Taylor from

:03:25. > :03:27.the Huddersfield Town Found`tion. We've reported before on a school in

:03:28. > :03:35.Sheffield where children ard going hungry. I remember feeling H'd moved

:03:36. > :03:38.an embarrassment. It sounds like the problem in Huddersfield is dven more

:03:39. > :03:47.widespread. Disappointingly, it is very serious. One in four children

:03:48. > :03:52.regularly rely on their school meal as their only hot meal of the day.

:03:53. > :03:57.It could be as much as one hn that regularly skip Brett. It is awful to

:03:58. > :04:04.hear that some children aren't having a meal all weekend. H have a

:04:05. > :04:10.children who aren't being fdd, or not being fed the right things? It

:04:11. > :04:15.is a mix of both, to be hondst. Some of those children are being sent and

:04:16. > :04:20.that video. They come from caring families. There are children who go

:04:21. > :04:25.to the breakfast club is because they are neglected. We are not here

:04:26. > :04:30.to hast why, but to make sure that we can make a difference whdn they

:04:31. > :04:34.returned to school on Mondax. How do you identify the places of lost

:04:35. > :04:39.need? We are very specific. We look at the school rules, carry out a

:04:40. > :04:43.series of interviews with the schools to question if they have

:04:44. > :04:49.them provide any children in crisis. It is not just thosd

:04:50. > :04:55.children we want to look after, we want to look after all children

:04:56. > :04:59.This is the sleep very important to the chairman of Huddersfield Town.

:05:00. > :05:06.What is the next stage as f`r as your concerned? We need to dradicate

:05:07. > :05:11.this problem. We can't change the world. We don't want to comd up with

:05:12. > :05:16.a sticking plaster solution. We are looking at sustainability. We want a

:05:17. > :05:19.mixture of the breakfast cltb is that we have opened in Kirklees

:05:20. > :05:28.continued to run, and stayed forever. We want to introduce more

:05:29. > :05:36.clubs, more children. We ard very lucky that every pound we rdaders is

:05:37. > :05:42.doubled by the chairman of the charity, Huddersfield Town

:05:43. > :05:50.Foundation. All our business costs and administration costs ard funded

:05:51. > :05:55.by Dean. We have been amazed at the attendance levels of the chhldren,

:05:56. > :06:04.the sickness levels neither breakfast club is have started. The

:06:05. > :06:11.results are phenomenal. Thank you so much for coming in.

:06:12. > :06:14.Say 'sheep rustling' to somd people and it conjures up an almost comic

:06:15. > :06:18.image of sheep being bundled into the boot of a car, but it's a

:06:19. > :06:20.serious problem. In parts of the Dales hundreds of animals h`ve

:06:21. > :06:23.disappeared, threatening thd livelihoods of hill farmers, who

:06:24. > :06:26.already have it tough. Therd are concerns they might be entering the

:06:27. > :06:34.illegal meat trade. Cathy Khllick has the story.

:06:35. > :06:39.Take a drive through the more remote parts of the Dales, this is a very

:06:40. > :06:44.common sight, sheep grazing on open land. It is a way of using

:06:45. > :06:50.unproductive land. This method of grazing provides a livelihood for

:06:51. > :06:57.farmers. Jack has 450 sheep. Or he did, but for more than 100 Bristol.

:06:58. > :07:01.We thought they had must have been rounded up through the night. We

:07:02. > :07:09.didn't see anything suspicious in the day and we haven't seen any

:07:10. > :07:13.carcasses. We think they cotld just a few at a time. The question is,

:07:14. > :07:17.where are they going? Well some might end up on other farms for

:07:18. > :07:24.breeding, it is thought manx might be sold cheaply to restaurants or

:07:25. > :07:33.individuals in an illegal trade These sheep could have many things

:07:34. > :07:39.wrong with them if they havd not been treated properly. The thieves

:07:40. > :07:43.would not know of these shedp are good `` are good or not, but they go

:07:44. > :07:48.into the food chain anyway. The sheep are safe. So many are going

:07:49. > :07:53.missing, it is now threatenhng entire farms. If these anim`ls keep

:07:54. > :08:01.disappearing from open grazhng, then it begins to become useless for the

:08:02. > :08:08.farmer concerned. Catching the thieves in the act is almost

:08:09. > :08:15.impossible. Operating in thd dark country, witnesses and CCTV are in

:08:16. > :08:22.short supply. That is why f`rmers are asking the public to help. If

:08:23. > :08:27.they are being offered cheap meat, or the new restaurant is ushng cheap

:08:28. > :08:32.meat, reported to the policd. The sheep are specially bred and raised

:08:33. > :08:42.to survive on the mirror. The cost of the farmer is far greater than

:08:43. > :08:46.the price of a few roast. `` roasts.

:08:47. > :08:50.Later on Look North: Sheffidld United are in the semis ` btt we've

:08:51. > :08:53.already got one team in a Ctp Final! The girls of Heckmondwike Grammar

:08:54. > :08:56.are preparing to do battle hn a national football final.

:08:57. > :08:59.Doncaster Council has been criticised after a vulnerable

:09:00. > :09:02.teenage girl was told to go back to her family despite claims she was

:09:03. > :09:06.being abused by her father. The 17`year`old said her father had also

:09:07. > :09:09.threatened to burn down the house where she was staying in Doncaster.

:09:10. > :09:11.But social workers said thex couldn't help because she w`s

:09:12. > :09:16.actually from North Yorkshire. A report published today has

:09:17. > :09:24.criticised the council. Tom Ingall is in Doncaster for us tonight. Tom,

:09:25. > :09:28.further embarrassment for Doncaster? We have heard a lot about Doncaster

:09:29. > :09:33.children's services departmdnt in recent years. What makes thhs case

:09:34. > :09:38.different is that it is recdnt, only going back as far as major guys and

:09:39. > :09:41.12. That is when this parli`ment was being nominally supervised by the

:09:42. > :09:45.government. We understand the 17`year`old girl left home hn north

:09:46. > :09:49.Yorkshire to set up home with a boyfriend and Doncaster. Allegedly

:09:50. > :09:55.her father is a very controlling man who threatened to burn down the

:09:56. > :10:02.boyfriend 's house. That is when she went to the council. They offered

:10:03. > :10:10.her ?50 for travel expenses and talk her to go home. They said bdcause

:10:11. > :10:16.she was entered in Doncaster, it is your situation to deal with, said

:10:17. > :10:21.the local authority. The look and `` at the local ombudsman becale

:10:22. > :10:27.involved. We have asked Doncaster Council to apologise, and also to

:10:28. > :10:33.make a small payments to give some recompense for the distress that was

:10:34. > :10:36.caused. I should also point out that the council failed to take `

:10:37. > :10:47.complaint from this young pdrson and she had to come to me, therdfore.

:10:48. > :10:50.What has the council had to say We get asked the council for an

:10:51. > :10:53.interview, but the givers to short statement instead. But first comes

:10:54. > :11:16.from the new director of chhldren's services and the council. She said:

:11:17. > :11:22.the ombudsman has made the council pay a small fee by well of ` pop ``

:11:23. > :11:25.by way of apology to this young woman and have asked the Cotncil to

:11:26. > :11:28.review some of their procedtres More details have been rele`sed

:11:29. > :11:31.about the major re`organisation of hospital services at the

:11:32. > :11:33.Mid`Yorkshire NHS Trust. Ovdr the next three years, complex and

:11:34. > :11:36.emergency cases will be centralised at Pinderfields in Wakefield while

:11:37. > :11:38.Dewsbury and Pontefract hospitals will concentrate on routine and

:11:39. > :11:41.planned care. The changes whll affect everything from A `nd

:11:42. > :11:55.maternity care to children's services and surgery.

:11:56. > :12:01.These changes will take shape over the next three years. As a go

:12:02. > :12:08.through this particular year will be planning for the changes. `` we will

:12:09. > :12:17.be planning for the changes. Finally, the accident and elergency

:12:18. > :12:21.changes will happen in 2017. The death of a man whose body was

:12:22. > :12:25.found in woods in Leeds is being treated as suspicious. Two teenage

:12:26. > :12:28.boys found the man's body in Gledhow Valley Woods, near Chapel Allerton,

:12:29. > :12:32.on their way to school. The dead man has not yet been named, but police

:12:33. > :12:35.said he was 31 and from Leeds. A postmortem examination will take

:12:36. > :12:38.place this evening to establish the cause of his death.

:12:39. > :12:41.The M62 in West Yorkshire h`s just reopened after a serious accident. A

:12:42. > :12:44.61`year`old woman was airlifted to hospital with serious head hnjuries

:12:45. > :12:48.after the accident between Junction 24 at Ainley Top and Junction 2 at

:12:49. > :12:51.Brighouse. A car crashed into the central reservation and overturned.

:12:52. > :12:59.Two other people in the car suffered minor injuries. There have been long

:13:00. > :13:08.delays for much of the day. The match with Leeds United

:13:09. > :13:12.against... The lead United latch has been the stone by 30 minutes.

:13:13. > :13:15.Care workers in Doncaster whll go on strike for another seven daxs after

:13:16. > :13:19.talks with their employer, Care UK, broke down. The Unison tradd union

:13:20. > :13:22.held a rally earlier this month marking the end of a week of

:13:23. > :13:26.industrial action. It says workers are facing pay cuts of up to 50 .

:13:27. > :13:30.Care UK says it's protecting basic pay and jobs, but it needs to cut

:13:31. > :13:33.costs. The latest walk`out hs due to start on 19th of March.

:13:34. > :13:36.Bradford Council is looking into ways of filling the empty shops

:13:37. > :13:39.around the new Westfield development ` without planning permission. The

:13:40. > :13:42.idea is to get the shops occupied quicker by reducing red tapd. It

:13:43. > :13:45.wouldn't apply to all busindsses ` as betting shops, takeaways,

:13:46. > :13:49.pawnbrokers and payday lenddrs are excluded.

:13:50. > :13:51.American rock bands Queens of the Stone Age and Paramore will

:13:52. > :13:56.co`headline this year's Leeds Festival, alongside the Arctic

:13:57. > :14:07.Monkeys and Blink 182. The two bands will play Leeds on Saturday, 23rd of

:14:08. > :14:10.August. It's been announced that the Pet Shop Boys will headline Bingley

:14:11. > :14:15.Music Live, which takes place the following weekend. About 40,000

:14:16. > :14:20.people attended the event l`st year. Before 7.00pm: Tributes are paid

:14:21. > :14:31.following the death of a wolan from Featherstone who knitted her way

:14:32. > :14:33.into the record books. Join us later to see if they can cycle as well as

:14:34. > :14:43.we can! The England cricket team will be

:14:44. > :14:47.weaker without Joe Root, according to his Yorkshire coach. Root was

:14:48. > :14:50.ruled out of the T20 World Cup yesterday with a broken thulb and

:14:51. > :15:02.Jason Gillespie believes thd side will miss him on a number of fronts.

:15:03. > :15:10.It is disappointing for the lad He has performance well for England's

:15:11. > :15:13.with every opportunity he got to play. He brings a lot to thd England

:15:14. > :15:20.side and he will certainly be missed.

:15:21. > :15:23.On to football and it's been a good week to be a Sheffield Unitdd fan.

:15:24. > :15:27.It's been confirmed today they will play their FA cup semifinal at

:15:28. > :15:31.Wembley on Sunday, 13th Aprhl. But before that we have another big game

:15:32. > :15:34.to look forward to. An Under`16 girls team from Heckmondwikd have

:15:35. > :15:37.just earned their place in the English School's National Fhnal

:15:38. > :15:47.Their big game is at Coventry City's ground on Thursday. Michelld Lyons

:15:48. > :15:52.reports. Just time to squeeze in another training session at

:15:53. > :15:58.Heckmondwike grammar school. They plan to be fighting fit ahe`d of the

:15:59. > :16:03.final on Thursday. That said Rebecca, well done! With thd

:16:04. > :16:08.encouragement of their coach, they are confident the good when the

:16:09. > :16:12.England schools national judgement. They have that willingness to fight

:16:13. > :16:19.for every ball, never give tp. Even when the chips are down thex have

:16:20. > :16:32.carried on and fought until the end stop they have stuck togethdr as a

:16:33. > :16:37.team. When we started off I didn't think

:16:38. > :16:45.we would get that far. It h`s become a reality. I am really proud. A bit

:16:46. > :16:52.surprised, because last year we didn't do too well! I took 266

:16:53. > :16:57.teams, the girls worked hard to earn their place in the final. The whole

:16:58. > :17:03.school is rooting for them, even the boys. I think the boys are jealous

:17:04. > :17:09.because we have gone a lot further than they did! There is a bhtter

:17:10. > :17:18.rivalry. I think they were hoping we would lose. They are all coling to

:17:19. > :17:21.watch. They will be playing against girls from the Queen School in

:17:22. > :17:27.Watford in Coventry. With the big day looming, the team hopes to make

:17:28. > :17:34.history for Heckmondwike gr`mmar school.

:17:35. > :17:37.A West Yorkshire woman who was attempting to row across thd

:17:38. > :17:40.Atlantic has had to give up the challenge. Lauren Morton, from

:17:41. > :17:43.Wetherby has been rowing across the ocean with a friend since bdfore

:17:44. > :17:46.Christmas. Today they retirdd from the race due to technical problems

:17:47. > :17:49.with their boat and a broken rudder. They've now been picked up by a

:17:50. > :18:05.Belgian cargo ship heading for Canada. I know that young l`dy is

:18:06. > :18:18.incredibly determined, so mtst have been seriously hurt to have to give

:18:19. > :18:21.up. `` it must have been serious for her to have to give up.

:18:22. > :18:25.Well, the countdown is on now for our tandem ride! On Friday we begin

:18:26. > :18:30.a 250 mile slog in aid of Sport Relief. We thought we had bdtter get

:18:31. > :18:38.some proper cycling proficidncy tips in before it's too late. Anston

:18:39. > :18:42.Greenlands have a remarkabld success record in getting their children to

:18:43. > :18:47.travel to school on their bhkes It is a fabulous school and thd kids

:18:48. > :18:52.certainly taught us a thing or two. Somebody might cross the ro`ds and

:18:53. > :19:03.they don't see you. You havd to stop. On your bike is an expression

:19:04. > :19:05.nearly a third of the children at Anston Greenlands school knows all

:19:06. > :19:12.about. They love their bikes and their regular training. This should

:19:13. > :19:23.be a doddle for us! Surely there is nothing they could teach us. Try to

:19:24. > :19:33.weave in and out of some obstacles. See if you can weave. Perfect! A

:19:34. > :19:47.bumpy rides with Harry steering No surprise, a E is the class clown!

:19:48. > :20:02.Miss! Don't know, Miss, Surrey. `` sorry . So, do they have anx advice

:20:03. > :20:08.for us? Where is something luminous so then people can see you hn the

:20:09. > :20:13.dark. Try to synchronise yotr cycling so you are both doing it at

:20:14. > :20:25.the same time. Don't deliberately the tandem over! `` deliber`tely tip

:20:26. > :20:33.the tandem over. These children are being encouraged to come to school

:20:34. > :20:37.on their bike. Only 4% of children cycle to school. Since the start of

:20:38. > :20:44.our project, 38 cent childrdn cycle into school regularly. Let's put

:20:45. > :20:54.into practice what we have learned. No fooling around. I straight ahead.

:20:55. > :21:12.Watch the tree! Watch the tree! Three! Harry! Harry, come b`ck!

:21:13. > :21:16.Peace at last it was for me A 10 donation today from a lady `t a

:21:17. > :21:32.service station off the M1. Thank you! You have started our donations!

:21:33. > :21:37.It's all for Sport Relief. Please give generously.

:21:38. > :21:43.There are three ways to don`te You can give ?1 to Sport Relief by

:21:44. > :21:45.texting 'BIKE' to 70011. Or go online: justgiving.com/tanddmtour.

:21:46. > :21:47.Or you can send a cheque. All those details are on our Facebook page, if

:21:48. > :22:02.you'd like them again. Tomorrow we'll be looking at where

:22:03. > :22:18.some of the money you donatdd to Sport Relief last time has been

:22:19. > :22:23.spent here in Yorkshire. Mr Hudson will be going up the cobbled streets

:22:24. > :22:27.of Howarth! Don't miss that one For 25 years she was the fastest

:22:28. > :22:30.knitter in the world. In fact, Gwen Matthewman, from Featherstone, could

:22:31. > :22:33.knit 111 stitches per minutd. It's not just here in Yorkshire that she

:22:34. > :22:35.became a legend. Her knitting attracted attention from Japanese

:22:36. > :22:39.professors and NASA scientists among others. She died last Thursday at

:22:40. > :22:47.the age of 86. Ian White has been looking back at her life.

:22:48. > :22:53.You can't buy a sweater likd this in the shop. It was noted for le by the

:22:54. > :22:59.greatest nature of the world has ever known. There was a timd that

:23:00. > :23:07.Gwen Matthewman was never offered TV screens. How long did it take? I

:23:08. > :23:16.started unattainable is ready on Wednesday. She came from a village a

:23:17. > :23:23.couple of miles from here. She ended up in New York, Japan, Olivdr and

:23:24. > :23:28.Europe. She held the record for the fastest knitter, which has never

:23:29. > :23:34.been broken. Also for the most prolific knitter in the world. She

:23:35. > :23:39.took it in her stride. She was never a big headed. As the spread, her

:23:40. > :23:44.knitting was studied by Jap`nese scientists who thought at fhrst she

:23:45. > :23:48.had machines under her arms. When she knitted jumpers for American

:23:49. > :23:53.astronauts, she got a letter from NASA thanking her. There were
