:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to Look North. On the BBC News at Six so

:00:00. > :00:12.Welcome to Look North. On the programme tonight: we look back at

:00:13. > :00:16.the legacy of Tony Benn, thd Labour MP for Chesterfield for 17 xears and

:00:17. > :00:21.a veteran campaigner. Phil is in Chesterfield talking to

:00:22. > :00:25.Dennis Skinner and finding out what impact he had on the town. H

:00:26. > :00:34.represent them and I fight for them and I try to help them. People come

:00:35. > :00:39.to see me every year. Also tonight: A blow for Br`dford

:00:40. > :00:45.`based supermarket chain as bank details are stolen and publhshed on

:00:46. > :00:48.the web. What a day?

:00:49. > :00:55.33 miles into our tour and incredible sport along the way.

:00:56. > :00:59.We are live in Skipton. In clear lunchtime there were 2000 pdople

:01:00. > :01:09.there. Sorry because traffic chaos but your generosity was rem`rkable.

:01:10. > :01:11.`` Oxley. There was sunlight today. A clouded

:01:12. > :01:25.over this afternoon but there is more sunshine over the weekdnd. I

:01:26. > :01:35.will have the full forecast later. Good evening. Tony Benn has died at

:01:36. > :01:40.the age of 88 after more th`n 5 years at the forefront of ldft`wing

:01:41. > :01:43.politics in Britain. Phil is that the Labour club in Chesterfheld

:01:44. > :01:48.where people have been paying tribute to him all day. Good

:01:49. > :01:52.evening. Good evening. When I first came to

:01:53. > :01:57.live and work in this part of the world in the 1980s Tony Benn was the

:01:58. > :02:01.local MP. At a time when politicians and local people do not alw`ys

:02:02. > :02:09.engage, the people of Chestdrfield took this man to their hearts. He

:02:10. > :02:12.represented the town for 17 years. He was very popular among m`ny

:02:13. > :02:19.people in this part of the world and he stood up for the miners hn 1 84.

:02:20. > :02:23.My colleague looks back at his political career. Tony Benn never

:02:24. > :02:28.shied from the limelight. He was famously affable and

:02:29. > :02:33.approachable but also a radhcal socialist or a loony left c`n ``

:02:34. > :02:38.depending on what paper you read. He was first elected as an MP hn

:02:39. > :02:41.Bristol in the 1950s but it was ten years later that he hit the

:02:42. > :02:46.headlines when he became thd first person in British history when he

:02:47. > :02:50.refused to take the title that he inherited from his father so he

:02:51. > :02:55.could remain in the Commons. He had to campaign to get the law changed.

:02:56. > :03:00.You have defeated the courts and change the constitution of this

:03:01. > :03:15.country by your own power. Hn the 1960s and 1970s he was a Cabinet

:03:16. > :03:17.minister and as technology Linister he oversaw the building of Concord.

:03:18. > :03:20.In the 1980s Margaret Thatcher increased her majority in p`rliament

:03:21. > :03:28.and Tony Benn lost his seat. Anthony Wedgwood Benn, 24,000... In March

:03:29. > :03:32.1984 the local Labour Party invited him to stand in a by`election in

:03:33. > :03:36.Chesterfield and he romped home They remember it well in thd local

:03:37. > :03:44.Labour card `` Labour club where a signed copy of the ballot p`per is

:03:45. > :03:48.on display. To date his supporters came to pay his respects but they

:03:49. > :03:53.admit it was a ruse to have an outsider and a Southerner as an MP

:03:54. > :03:57.in the town. `` they admit ht was a risk. On the day of his election

:03:58. > :04:01.Chesterfield was at the heart of the miners strike. It was almost a gift

:04:02. > :04:05.to get Tony Benn at the start of the miners strike and I was an official

:04:06. > :04:08.in the miners union at the time To have the wisdom and support of Tony

:04:09. > :04:16.Benn at that time was of grdat value to me and all of my colleagtes. His

:04:17. > :04:20.campaigning on the strike and Margaret Thatcher were typically

:04:21. > :04:24.uncompromising. The Prime Mhnister is a brutal woman and she is trying

:04:25. > :04:29.to follow policies of barbarism He retired as an MP in 2001 but despite

:04:30. > :04:37.his high profile he never for God that he was also a local MP. I

:04:38. > :04:43.represent Chesterfield and H fight for them and I try to help them I'm

:04:44. > :04:50.until the end he continued `s a radical campaigner. He camp`igned

:04:51. > :04:55.for peace in many places and his son is also an MP in Leeds. He paid

:04:56. > :05:00.tribute to his father whose strong political connections never got in

:05:01. > :05:04.the way of dignity and courtesy The image of Tony Benn takes pride

:05:05. > :05:08.of place here in the Labour club. He spent a lot of time here. Hd was

:05:09. > :05:12.teetotal but he enjoyed the company of people here. His family have

:05:13. > :05:14.issued a statement saying they will always miss his lab that was

:05:15. > :05:32.sustained throughout their lives. My colleague has been talking to

:05:33. > :05:37.people who knew Tony Benn wdll and perhaps sought the side of Tony Benn

:05:38. > :05:41.that the public did not. Young and charismatic and a great

:05:42. > :05:46.orator, Tony Benn was a leading light in the Labour Party. The

:05:47. > :05:53.former MP from Keighley and cry went on to work with him. She relembers

:05:54. > :05:58.the first time she saw him. It was the first party conference H went to

:05:59. > :06:02.in 1962 and Tony and Caroline were the stars of the show. They were all

:06:03. > :06:08.is most like Hollywood greats. They would always be dancing. Thdy were

:06:09. > :06:13.such a handsome couple. Thex probably wouldn't like me s`ying

:06:14. > :06:18.that but they did. Originally a moderate moderniser, by the end of

:06:19. > :06:22.the 1970s his views had shifted to the left. It led to allegathons that

:06:23. > :06:27.the son of Viscount who was educated at Westminster was a socialhst

:06:28. > :06:33.hypocrite. His Formosa constituency Chesterfield says that is unfair on

:06:34. > :06:38.the serving MP. We introducdd him to people to come to meeting and to let

:06:39. > :06:43.people see him. He was ordinary not a bit like the media pertain to him

:06:44. > :06:47.to be. He was dead ordinary. When it came to political leanings he said

:06:48. > :06:51.he was a signpost rather th`n a weather vane, it was an approach

:06:52. > :06:55.that went down well in North Derbyshire. You might not agree with

:06:56. > :07:00.him but he made sense. Everxbody liked him. He was well`known and not

:07:01. > :07:13.afraid to speak his mind. In recent years he had become a town hall

:07:14. > :07:16.favourite and something of ` national treasure, appearing on his

:07:17. > :07:18.own is `` appearing on his own and sometimes with a Sheffield folk

:07:19. > :07:21.singer. He was a generous and sincere man, humanist. In mx view

:07:22. > :07:25.humanitarian socialist. I understand he said he became a national

:07:26. > :07:30.treasure and he said it was because he could no longer change things so

:07:31. > :07:35.then you become a national treasure when you have no ability to change

:07:36. > :07:40.things. Tony Benn would no doubt have liked to have changed lore A

:07:41. > :07:46.politician for more than half a century who put politics above

:07:47. > :07:51.personality. Dennis Skinner is the Labour MP for

:07:52. > :07:56.the neighbouring constituency and has known Tony Benn for over 50

:07:57. > :08:01.years. How would you sum hil up He was a teacher and a great

:08:02. > :08:07.communicator. He was an acthvist. He was a socialist who came from a

:08:08. > :08:12.special grouping, I would h`ve thought, the English dissenting

:08:13. > :08:15.left. That ran in his familx. Some people mistook that for othdr things

:08:16. > :08:23.but I am pretty sure he was that kind of a radical. He managdd quite

:08:24. > :08:29.remarkably to get Harold Wilson to agree to a referendum in 1975. You

:08:30. > :08:32.hear all the talk about Davhd Cameron promising referenduls and

:08:33. > :08:36.then cancelling them and get Tony Benn managed to convince Harold

:08:37. > :08:43.Wilson it would be a good idea and it is the only one we have dver had.

:08:44. > :08:47.Why was he so popular among his constituents? He was popular because

:08:48. > :08:50.he could communicate `` comlunicate. He had a special gift of

:08:51. > :08:56.communicating with some people who felt they had been left out. What do

:08:57. > :09:01.you think his political leg`cy will be? In my opinion it was th`t he was

:09:02. > :09:06.a very good speaker in the House of Commons, as he was on the platform,

:09:07. > :09:10.sometimes it is a different style that you have two youths. Hd was

:09:11. > :09:17.very effective and if I had been in charge I think I would have used...

:09:18. > :09:22.He had a philosopher type of an outlook that I would have used. He

:09:23. > :09:26.would have made a great Fordign Secretary for instance. He served

:09:27. > :09:31.the people of this town well. Do you think they will, obviously today a

:09:32. > :09:35.lot of people will feel verx sad and upset at his passing. Yes, they will

:09:36. > :09:42.but I have to tell you that when I saw him last, and I have a vivid

:09:43. > :09:45.memory, not of somebody who was exceptionally frail but of ` man

:09:46. > :09:50.outside Charing Cross Hospital when he should have been in the ward in

:09:51. > :09:56.a wheelchair and he lit up his pipe three times in half an hour while I

:09:57. > :10:00.told him all about the latest antics at the Labour Party conference! Many

:10:01. > :10:05.thanks for that tribute to Tony Benn. Of course, as Westminster

:10:06. > :10:13.mourns the loss of a great parliamentarian there will be more

:10:14. > :10:17.on this on the Sunday Polithcs. Thank you very much indeed.

:10:18. > :10:20.Next tonight the Bradford supermarket chain Morrisons has been

:10:21. > :10:24.dealt another blow after discovering that the personal details of

:10:25. > :10:28.thousands of staff have been stolen. The company says it has informed all

:10:29. > :10:32.of the employees and it is working with the police to find at who is

:10:33. > :10:39.behind the theft. The news comes off the back of dismal annual rdsults.

:10:40. > :10:43.As weeks ago it has not been the best for Britain's fourth`l`rgest

:10:44. > :10:47.supermarket chain. Shares bombed after the company posted thd worst

:10:48. > :10:54.results in five years, pre`tax loss of a and two day there was lore bad

:10:55. > :10:58.news. Today it emerged that thousands of employees, including

:10:59. > :11:03.board members, had had their payroll and bank details stolen and posted

:11:04. > :11:07.on a website. Morrisons said it did not believe the system had been

:11:08. > :11:19.hacked by an external sourcd, suggesting that it was someone from

:11:20. > :11:22.within the company. It went on to say that employees had been informed

:11:23. > :11:24.and it was helping them to take the appropriate actions to safeguard

:11:25. > :11:25.their personal data. The colpany Facebook today had hundreds of

:11:26. > :11:29.comments from disgruntled elployees, many saying they had not bedn

:11:30. > :11:34.informed. Never mind contacting people with e`mail addresses, what

:11:35. > :11:37.about a phone call? First wd find out a pitiful profit share `nd then

:11:38. > :11:43.we find out about this from Facebook! It is shocking, pdople are

:11:44. > :11:47.hearing about it from custolers they are serving at the tail. West

:11:48. > :11:50.Yorkshire Police confirmed that they are supporting Morrisons in the

:11:51. > :11:57.investigation and the company has announced it is setting up `

:11:58. > :12:01.helpline for employees. News in brief now.

:12:02. > :12:06.North Yorkshire councillors are asking for another review into the

:12:07. > :12:13.decision to downgrade services at Northallerton's Friarage Hospital

:12:14. > :12:15.source `` Friarage Hospital. The committee met this afternoon and

:12:16. > :12:20.will write to the Health Secretary and ask for a second review in two

:12:21. > :12:23.years. Judges at the High Court have

:12:24. > :12:28.deferred their decision on where the bones of Richard III should be

:12:29. > :12:32.buried. Campaigners, includhng some of the moderate's distant rdlatives

:12:33. > :12:35.say the government was wrong to grant a licence to bury him in

:12:36. > :12:39.Leicester and they want him buried in York instead. A judicial review

:12:40. > :12:46.is now over and a decision hs expected in about six weeks.

:12:47. > :12:50.The takeover of Leeds United by an Italian businessman should be

:12:51. > :12:55.resolved within ten days according to the football me. His famhly

:12:56. > :13:00.company had a bid for 75% of the club and accepted last month. The

:13:01. > :13:05.league say the majority of hssues have been resolved to their

:13:06. > :13:10.satisfaction. He is due to face their charge of tax evasion in his

:13:11. > :13:15.native Italy next week. A Leeds diver has got a bronze medal

:13:16. > :13:19.in his first World Series event He was only really going for the

:13:20. > :13:24.experience that along with his partner he came third in thd ten

:13:25. > :13:30.metre platform. Congratulathons to him.

:13:31. > :13:34.Harry and Amy set off on thd start of their Tandem Tour this morning

:13:35. > :13:39.and they are cycling the first stages of the Tour de Francd, 2 0

:13:40. > :13:45.miles of it. It is to raise money for sport relief. They got to

:13:46. > :13:52.Skipton and they now join us. Well done, how are your backsides?

:13:53. > :13:59.A bit sore to be honest. Good evening from Skipton, we made it! It

:14:00. > :14:02.was 33 miles, day one of thd Tandem challenge. The first ten miles were

:14:03. > :14:08.a joy with beautiful sunshine and the wind behind us. The last ten

:14:09. > :14:11.miles were really tough with ahead with the whole way.

:14:12. > :14:17.Let me remind you of the rotte. Leeds town hall, we went to Harwood

:14:18. > :14:22.house and then we went to Otley where they were brilliant. Then we

:14:23. > :14:28.went to Ilkley and we ended up here in this wonderful place of Skipton.

:14:29. > :14:31.Thank you for turning up thhs evening.

:14:32. > :14:35.Yorkshire has made us feel like pop stars today. It is a day we will not

:14:36. > :14:41.forget. This is the full story. There were no changing rooms at

:14:42. > :14:46.Leeds town Hall this morning but Linda Barker was there to ensure

:14:47. > :14:48.that our tourists looked thd part. You look amazing in your lycra. You

:14:49. > :15:08.are ready to go. Go! Harry and Amy waddled up `` wobbled

:15:09. > :15:13.off through the morning traffic and headed for Harwood house whdre Harry

:15:14. > :15:19.popped in to make sure that he turned the heating off. Back in the

:15:20. > :15:26.saddle it was time to push on and enjoy the view. What a stunning

:15:27. > :15:29.route. It is gorgeous. If Yorkshire's natural beauty was not

:15:30. > :15:41.enough to keep them going, there was plenty of vocal in Courage Lint as

:15:42. > :15:45.well. `` encouragement as wdll. Our peddling pair reached Otley

:15:46. > :15:50.where the reception was as generous as the donations. After lunch Amy

:15:51. > :15:56.was briefly substituted by John Hendrie. Do you think we will make

:15:57. > :16:02.it? It will be tough. There are a few hills involved and I have only

:16:03. > :16:10.done several `` a few miles but the hills will be tough for you. You

:16:11. > :16:17.just have to go slow on the Hales. `` hills. The crowds have bden

:16:18. > :16:26.coming out to cheer them on. It has been like this all of the w`y. It is

:16:27. > :16:34.cold but it is great. Up thd weatherman promised sunshind today.

:16:35. > :16:38.`` Paul the weatherman. Would you want to do it in this weathdr? We

:16:39. > :16:42.are very impressed, especially with Amy. They carried on all thd way to

:16:43. > :16:50.Skipton where a warm welcomd awaited. That is one day down and

:16:51. > :16:55.the Dales are yet to come. Thank `` thank you to all of the

:16:56. > :17:00.schoolchildren who were wonderful. This is a wonderful special bike and

:17:01. > :17:05.Dominick Irvine is a special rider. You are going John O'Groats to lands

:17:06. > :17:10.end in 50 hours nonstop. Yes we want to break the record which h`s stood

:17:11. > :17:16.since 1966. It is a tough challenge. It makes us look a bit

:17:17. > :17:21.embarrassing! You weighed whth us from Otley today, how did you find

:17:22. > :17:29.it? It was amazing, the sport was fantastic. You did really wdll. It

:17:30. > :17:32.was a really tough wind that you were battling against and to see you

:17:33. > :17:37.persisting in on those condhtions was wonderful, well done. You are a

:17:38. > :17:41.professional on the Tandem so what tips do you have? Enjoyed it. Enjoy

:17:42. > :17:43.the support you are getting and take your time on the hills. Enjoy them

:17:44. > :17:49.and make the most of it. and make

:17:50. > :17:53.Are you doing anything tomorrow when we go up butter tubs? That hs a

:17:54. > :17:59.fearsome climb so I think I have something else to do! Thank you for

:18:00. > :18:05.your support. Why are we doing this?

:18:06. > :18:10.I did it so I could keep my job Seriously, we have quite a reason to

:18:11. > :18:15.try and get you to part with some of your money. Olivia has been to a

:18:16. > :18:23.project in Leeds which I thhnk just about sums up what sport relief is

:18:24. > :18:30.all about. This is far more than an exdrcise

:18:31. > :18:39.class. This is freedom from feeling lonely, a lifeline for 200 people in

:18:40. > :18:43.Leeds. Two day a Harry Pottdr star has joined in. I notice it brings

:18:44. > :18:49.all the people from the comlunity together to just come and h`ve a cup

:18:50. > :18:53.of tea and a chat and what H have heard from Jean over there hs that

:18:54. > :18:59.it extends to outside of thd project as well and it is just creating a

:19:00. > :19:08.community spirit which I thhnk is disappearing all over the place

:19:09. > :19:13.Sport relief pays a poor Latren to work at this charity. Our job is to

:19:14. > :19:19.go out and befriend older and isolated people. She encour`ges them

:19:20. > :19:22.to come to sessions like thhs. People are scared of taking the

:19:23. > :19:26.first step and coming to a new environment where they do not know

:19:27. > :19:30.people and meeting new people. They need encouragement as well `s social

:19:31. > :19:34.contact. They realise when they step over that boundary that thex should

:19:35. > :19:40.have done it sooner. The ch`rity takes groups on day trips and hosts

:19:41. > :19:50.coffee mornings, lunch clubs and card games. You get the company and

:19:51. > :19:56.it is fun, we have a laugh. Thank you very much for that. I whll talk

:19:57. > :20:00.to this lady. Look at this, in white. I thought I had gone to

:20:01. > :20:07.heaven at one point. Let me ask you this, what does it mean to Skipton

:20:08. > :20:10.to be involved in this? It hs absolutely phenomenal. We h`ve had

:20:11. > :20:17.the torch and anything that happens in Skipton is absolutely wonderful

:20:18. > :20:25.because it is a wonderful place to be. Do you always dressed lhke this?

:20:26. > :20:34.Well... I suppose so, yes! H do my best. We are good Yorkshire folk.

:20:35. > :20:38.What does it mean to Skipton to you with the Tour de France comhng? It

:20:39. > :20:42.is fantastic, it puts Skipton on the map. We have fantastic people and a

:20:43. > :20:46.range of shops and it will be good for the town. Everyone has ` real

:20:47. > :20:50.buzz. You have an idea of what it will be like and there are thousands

:20:51. > :20:54.of people that will put you on the map. We are the dry run before the

:20:55. > :21:02.professionals get here. We are testing out the road for a

:21:03. > :21:04.brilliant is for sport relidf. If you would like to donate pldase do.

:21:05. > :21:30.You can text us. You can also send us a cheqte in the

:21:31. > :21:37.post. I cannot wait for the 50 mile

:21:38. > :21:41.journey tomorrow. I thought we might give you some approximate thmings of

:21:42. > :21:57.where we might be in the next three days. Tomorrow we leave Skipton at

:21:58. > :22:01.around 9am and our first stop is in Kettlewell. We finally finish in

:22:02. > :22:06.Swaledale in the village of Muker. It will be an early start on Sunday

:22:07. > :22:12.which is the longest day of all After a steep climb we passdd

:22:13. > :22:17.through Leyburn and we carrx on to Ripon. We finish in Harrogate with a

:22:18. > :22:29.warm bath. On Monday it is thankfully flat We

:22:30. > :22:35.travel through the centre of York before we pop back to Harrogate

:22:36. > :22:42.We will chat about Jews and cyclists who were on the route today. `` we

:22:43. > :22:49.will chat to some cyclists who were on the route today. How did you find

:22:50. > :22:55.it? It was tough, very tough. The wind was full in our place `ll of
