:00:10. > :01:32.Good evening and welcome to a special edition of Look North. A
:01:33. > :01:36.countdown has begun. It is 000 days until the Tour de France coles to
:01:37. > :01:39.Yorkshire. At the beginning of July, we will welcome one of the biggest
:01:40. > :01:47.events in the sporting world. Suspected to bring into the region
:01:48. > :01:51.around ?100 million. Tonight, we are live at Ripon Cathedral. Is it not a
:01:52. > :01:55.stunning location for such ` special event, a gala dinner to mark this
:01:56. > :02:00.occasion. We are expecting some of the biggest names in cycling. Today,
:02:01. > :02:05.we found out it is not just about the sport of cycling itself. There
:02:06. > :02:09.is so much more going on. They have unveiled a cultural festival today.
:02:10. > :02:14.This will see 100 days of special art events. It will be theatre,
:02:15. > :02:18.music and dance. We will have a lot more about that later on. Fhrst
:02:19. > :02:25.let's talk about the legacy of an event like this. We heard that word
:02:26. > :02:29.banded about quite a lot whdre any city hosts a major sporting event.
:02:30. > :02:33.What does it really mean to us in Yorkshire? What will be the cycling
:02:34. > :02:38.imprint for our region long after the cyclists have left us? Our
:02:39. > :02:40.correspondent has been investigating forums.
:02:41. > :02:44.This bike once cluttered solebody's garden shed. Stripped down, spruced
:02:45. > :02:48.up and born again, it becomds a new vehicle for fun, fitness and
:02:49. > :02:54.independence. Street Bikes has given away 2500 bikes in three ye`rs and
:02:55. > :02:58.taught hundreds how to ride. Nearly every bike here is a recycldd bike
:02:59. > :03:02.that's been fixed up and we use them for sessions and for communhty`led
:03:03. > :03:07.rides so people don't need ` bike to come on the ride and get usdd to
:03:08. > :03:12.cycling again. And if they can't afford a bike, we provide a bike.
:03:13. > :03:15.With the Tour de France's vhsit to Yorkshire now just 100 days away,
:03:16. > :03:21.the organisers of the race `re hoping to get more of us riding more
:03:22. > :03:25.often, more safely. It's gohng to encourage a lot of people to come
:03:26. > :03:29.and join in, obviously lookhng at us doing it today. So it will dncourage
:03:30. > :03:33.a lot of people coming, I think so. And it's good for exercise. We want
:03:34. > :03:38.all the family to get together, not just the men doing it and the women
:03:39. > :03:42.doing it. It will be for thd kids as well. Tour fever isn't excltsive to
:03:43. > :03:47.members of Savile Town Women's Association. The honourable member
:03:48. > :03:50.for Sheffield was in Harrog`te today and it seems his house has caught
:03:51. > :03:55.the bug also. I'm going to take my kids to see the Tour de France as it
:03:56. > :04:00.whooshes through a bit of mx constituency and I've... I'l in no
:04:01. > :04:03.doubt that my small boys, lhke lots of kids, will think that's dxciting
:04:04. > :04:10.and will want to try it out themselves. That's Deputy Prime
:04:11. > :04:13.Ministerial music to the ears of the Grand Depart's organisers, who hope
:04:14. > :04:19.that a new race staged everx May in Yorkshire will help them deliver
:04:20. > :04:22.their legacy strategy. The lost recent figures show 13% of `dults in
:04:23. > :04:29.Yorkshire and the Humber cycle at least once a month. The plan is for
:04:30. > :04:33.that to increase to 18% by 2023 And for the numbers of trips made by
:04:34. > :04:37.bike to be 20% higher than 2012 Sometimes, defining what legacy is
:04:38. > :04:40.can be as hard as achieving it, which is why it is often easier to
:04:41. > :04:42.think in terms of bricks and mortar. Sometimes, defining what legacy is
:04:43. > :04:46.can be as hard Projects likd the ?29 million cycle superhighway between
:04:47. > :04:49.Bradford and Leeds. But projects don't have to be big, as thhs 2 0
:04:50. > :04:56.metre outdoor velodrome hopds to prove when it opens this sulmer
:04:57. > :04:59.It's going to be unique to Yorkshire. It's an outdoor 250, so
:05:00. > :05:03.the same size as an Olympic velodrome. It's going to encourage
:05:04. > :05:08.grassroots new people to get into track cycling. Legacy becamd a bit
:05:09. > :05:20.of a dirty word after the London Olympics. Yorkshire hopes it can
:05:21. > :05:24.build something more substantial. It is nice to have moved inside I
:05:25. > :05:28.have never seen the cathedr`l looking like this. It looks
:05:29. > :05:31.absolutely gorgeous, especi`lly with the yellow of course. Let's talk to
:05:32. > :05:40.two of the men at the centrd of the Tour. The Tour director and also
:05:41. > :05:48.somebody from Welcome To Yorkshire. How Excited Are You With 100 Days To
:05:49. > :05:52.Go?. Very exciting. Ripon C`thedral all in yellow is perfect and an
:05:53. > :06:02.important step on the way to the grand depart. It will be 100% sure I
:06:03. > :06:11.am `` it will be, I am 100% sure, unforgettable and amazing. Hs
:06:12. > :06:15.Yorkshire sexy? It is! For sure This is the only answer. Perfect
:06:16. > :06:21.location for an event of thhs size? It is perfect. There were no worries
:06:22. > :06:26.at all from our part. It will be outstanding landscapes for the Tour.
:06:27. > :06:35.It will be very interesting for the sport. We were all very impressed
:06:36. > :06:40.with these declines and mountains. It will be perfect for sure. What is
:06:41. > :06:45.very important for us as organisers is passion and here in this Ripon
:06:46. > :06:51.Cathedral, all in yellow, there is passion and respect for the Tour.
:06:52. > :06:55.Let's talk about legacy, sh`ll we? Tell us about the international
:06:56. > :07:00.fight right, the details of that. We are going to tonight sign a
:07:01. > :07:07.memorandum of understanding with British cycling and ASO for a new
:07:08. > :07:12.race in Yorkshire for 2015 onwards. We are very excited about that and
:07:13. > :07:16.very excited to have two partners of the calibre of British Cyclhng and
:07:17. > :07:20.ASO to work with those and other partners across Yorkshire to deliver
:07:21. > :07:23.what we will be an ongoing race that will be here a lot longer than I am
:07:24. > :07:29.and if it outlives me, that would be fantastic. What we do my `` what
:07:30. > :07:36.about other people who want to get on their bikes? Is it safe dnough on
:07:37. > :07:41.our roads? I am putting my loney where our mouth is and we are doing
:07:42. > :07:45.a lot of work with a lot of partners through the work Cycle Yorkshire to
:07:46. > :07:49.get more people cycling mord often right across Yorkshire. Havd a
:07:50. > :07:54.lovely dinner. It looks absolutely lovely. We will be back a lhttle
:07:55. > :07:58.later trotting about the cultural festival but for now let's hand you
:07:59. > :08:00.back to Tanya in the studio for the rest of the day's news.
:08:01. > :08:03.Charlotte, thank you. Claims that the television presenter Jilmy
:08:04. > :08:06.Savile abused children at more than 20 children's homes and schools
:08:07. > :08:09.across England are to be investigated. The allegations, which
:08:10. > :08:12.date back to the 1960s, '70s and '80s, were uncovered as part of a
:08:13. > :08:15.review by the Metropolitan Police. The Department for Education has
:08:16. > :08:21.named four schools in the Ldeds area, as Our crime correspondent
:08:22. > :08:24.John Cundy reports. First, ht was investigations into Jimmy S`vile's
:08:25. > :08:27.connections with the Health Service. Now under focus, Savile's possible
:08:28. > :08:40.activities in children's holes and schools. Among those named today...
:08:41. > :08:45.The problem for the authorities is that some links with Savile have
:08:46. > :08:49.already been discounted, as here at Notre Dame in Leeds, while some of
:08:50. > :08:55.the other institutions named may no longer exist at all. We welcome any
:08:56. > :09:01.investigation that will revdal how widespread this abuse was
:09:02. > :09:04.perpetrated. And at the end of all these different inquiries, there
:09:05. > :09:08.must be some drawing togethdr so that lessons can be learned and that
:09:09. > :09:13.we ensure that it does not happen again. Here, near Wetherby, a
:09:14. > :09:18.housing development covers tp the site of just one school where Jimmy
:09:19. > :09:21.Savile may well have once offended. But for Savile, no cover`up as yet
:09:22. > :09:33.another inquiry investigates his past.
:09:34. > :09:37.The Independent Police Complaints Commission has confirmed it had
:09:38. > :09:39.identified 13 suspects at the centre of the Hillsborough investigation.
:09:40. > :09:45.They are looking into whethdr police officers were guilty of misconduct
:09:46. > :09:49.after the disaster. A mix of serving and retired officers are behng
:09:50. > :09:51.interviewed for offences including misconduct in a public office,
:09:52. > :09:53.perverting the course of justice and manslaughter.
:09:54. > :09:56.Campaigners have staged a protest in Dewsbury today against plans for a
:09:57. > :09:59.major shake`up of hospital services at the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trtst.
:10:00. > :10:01.Under the proposals, all colplex and emergency cases would go to
:10:02. > :10:04.Pinderfields in Wakefield, while Pontefract and Dewsbury hospitals
:10:05. > :10:07.would deal with planned and routine care. The changes will affect
:10:08. > :10:13.everything from maternity and children's services to A `nd
:10:14. > :10:15.surgery. It is absolutely clear that that decision is financiallx
:10:16. > :10:19.motivated. I have been a he`lth co`worker for over 12 years. I work
:10:20. > :10:22.in a hospital. I have had the opportunity to speak to litdrally
:10:23. > :10:26.hundreds and hundreds of he`lth care staff. I can honestly tell xou that
:10:27. > :10:29.not one single person has told me that this will benefit patidnt care.
:10:30. > :10:32.It is all about improving the quality of service. Once thdse
:10:33. > :10:38.changes are made, we will provide a consultant`led service everx day,
:10:39. > :10:42.seven days a week, 365 days a year. That is better than the service that
:10:43. > :10:44.we provide now in all three of our hospitals.
:10:45. > :10:48.The funeral of former Chestdrfield MP Tony Benn has taken placd in
:10:49. > :10:51.Westminster this morning. Crowds lined the route and held up banners
:10:52. > :10:55.in support of the former cabinet minister as his coffin was driven to
:10:56. > :10:59.St Margaret's church. A tribute to Mr Benn from his family, including
:11:00. > :11:02.his son Hilary, the MP for Leeds Central, was read out at thd
:11:03. > :11:06.service. Mr Benn died two wdeks ago at the age of 88. His funer`l
:11:07. > :11:23.ceremony was followed by a private family cremation.
:11:24. > :11:25.The city of York Council should stop dithering over Lendal Bridgd,
:11:26. > :11:28.according to Liberal Democr`t councillors. A trial closurd of the
:11:29. > :11:31.bridge to cars has finished. But despite this, the restrictions
:11:32. > :11:32.remain in place until the ilpact has been assessed. Heidi Tomlinson
:11:33. > :11:36.reports. There is a peaceful field to Lendal
:11:37. > :11:39.Bridge but the daytime ban on cars, motorbikes and lorries has created
:11:40. > :11:43.political noise and driver fury Over 50,000 fines have been issued
:11:44. > :11:47.during the six`month trial. A ?700,000 income for the council The
:11:48. > :11:55.ban stays in place although the trial is over. We are still waiting
:11:56. > :11:58.for them to make a decision. We believe that they should stop
:11:59. > :12:01.dithering and open it now, tntil they decide what they're gohng to do
:12:02. > :12:05.in the future. Bus times might have improved for the services that cross
:12:06. > :12:08.Lendal Bridge but they have got worse on other routes because of the
:12:09. > :12:12.congestion for the cars that have moved and changde their route. So we
:12:13. > :12:15.do not think that it has bedn a success. The plan was to reduce air
:12:16. > :12:18.pollution and congestion whhlst improving bus times. Inform`tion
:12:19. > :12:22.gathered during the trial is now being analysed. So why is the route
:12:23. > :12:25.not back to normal? Well, wd thought that would be confusing, if we
:12:26. > :12:29.choose to make the trial permanent having done it for six months, taken
:12:30. > :12:32.it off and then put it back two months later doesn't really make a
:12:33. > :12:36.lot of sense. Permanent plans for Lendal Bridge will be made hn May.
:12:37. > :12:47.Until then, signs remain to warn drivers of the unpopular ban.
:12:48. > :12:49.Football now. Italian busindssman Massimo Cellino has lodged `n appeal
:12:50. > :12:52.against the Football League's decision to block his takeover of
:12:53. > :12:56.Leeds United. Cellino failed the League's Owners and Directors Test
:12:57. > :12:59.because of failure to pay t`x on a yacht. The League says they'll
:13:00. > :13:07.consider the appeal as quickly as possible. McDermott instead faced a
:13:08. > :13:11.barrage of questions about whether his and the players' wages would be
:13:12. > :13:15.paid at the end of this month. Well, I assume at the end of everx month,
:13:16. > :13:18.I make the assumption that xou get paid. So it's always an asstmption!
:13:19. > :13:21.Has David Haig, the managing director, or anyone else, s`id to
:13:22. > :13:26.you they have sorted this shtuation? I have not spoken to them about that
:13:27. > :13:30.situation. But as I said, you know, the end of the month is Monday. Have
:13:31. > :13:33.the players come to you and said, Boss, are we getting paid? No, no, I
:13:34. > :13:37.think they have made the sale assumption.
:13:38. > :13:40.Now, in case you're wondering where Harry is today, no, he's not taking
:13:41. > :13:45.a rest after his gruelling tandem tour. He's down in London to collect
:13:46. > :13:50.another award. This time it was Best Presenter at the Ruby Awards. They
:13:51. > :13:54.recognise the best television from the nations and regions. Yorkshire's
:13:55. > :14:01.Sunday Politics also won Best Political Programme. Congratulations
:14:02. > :14:05.to them. Let's go back to Ripon now `nd see
:14:06. > :14:11.how the celebrations are getting on. 100 days and counting till the Tour
:14:12. > :14:15.arrives in Yorkshire. Charlotte I hope they're going to feed xou, and
:14:16. > :14:19.looks fantastic. It looks gorgeous, does it not? Look
:14:20. > :14:22.at the cathedral. I do not think I have got any chance of getthng
:14:23. > :14:27.anything! I am not on the lhst. Tonight, it is not just abott
:14:28. > :14:33.cycling or sport. What we found out is that the organisers have launched
:14:34. > :14:37.a festival, a culture of art and activities that will take place over
:14:38. > :14:42.the next 100 days. There is going to be music, dance, theatre, everything
:14:43. > :14:45.you can think of. That kick starts tonight down in Sheffield at one of
:14:46. > :14:51.most famous theatres, the Crucible. It will be a special dance
:14:52. > :14:57.performance of one of Yorkshire s most famous stories. Cathy has been
:14:58. > :15:05.a long take a look. If you did not know cares, xou
:15:06. > :15:07.cannot only be true Yorkshire. The story of the poor bans belidd the
:15:08. > :15:12.poor Barnes Villa defending a kestrel has become part of culture.
:15:13. > :15:14.`` Barnsley lad. It is only right that another look at the de`l should
:15:15. > :15:21.open the first ever Yorkshire Festival. In a rehearsal sttdio in
:15:22. > :15:24.Sheffield, inspiration is on the walls and in a well thumbed copy of
:15:25. > :15:34.the book. This rendition will be told entirely without words. This is
:15:35. > :15:38.the dance. Chester Hayes is playing the boy Billy and this secthon
:15:39. > :15:43.captures his restriction and anger before he finds the kestrel. At the
:15:44. > :15:48.start he is frustrated and the movements are jerky. Later, when he
:15:49. > :15:52.meets Kez, the movement is so much freer because emotionally hd feels
:15:53. > :16:00.free and safe and like he h`s a friend and someone he can trust The
:16:01. > :16:04.dance has been devised by Jonathan Watkins. He is a Barnsley boy
:16:05. > :16:08.himself who won a place at the Royal Ballet School. He has been wanting
:16:09. > :16:19.to do Kez as a dance show for more than 15 years. It needs to be quite
:16:20. > :16:22.angry, like that! It is a vdry much loved local story that is jtst
:16:23. > :16:33.present in everybody's lives. When I was growing up, it was just part of
:16:34. > :16:38.my DNA, so to speak. The choreography is inventive. Dven the
:16:39. > :16:43.kestrel's shed becomes part of the dance. Here, Billy's older brother
:16:44. > :16:47.is trying to catch the bird, which will be represented on stagd by
:16:48. > :16:52.puppets and the dancers thelselves. Kes started as a book, took flight
:16:53. > :16:56.as a film and has also been done as a player and musical. Such hs the
:16:57. > :17:04.power of this story, it has worked every time. Kes the dance promises
:17:05. > :17:13.to honour that tradition. Looks fantastic, does it not? Let's
:17:14. > :17:17.talk to Henrietta from the festival. What else can we look forward to?
:17:18. > :17:28.Film, music, sculpture, Carnival parade, creatures created ottside.
:17:29. > :17:32.We have the fantastic project that a dance theatre in Leeds are laking.
:17:33. > :17:39.Light suits, mystery, dance, choreography all happening hn Leeds.
:17:40. > :17:45.We have They Toured The Cindma. 100 screenings over the 100 days of the
:17:46. > :17:49.festival from village halls so brilliant technique and join us for
:17:50. > :17:57.those events. You have seen the sculptures. On the hedgerow there is
:17:58. > :18:01.a new sculpture outside the art gallery. We have been backed
:18:02. > :18:06.fantastically by our supporters Yorkshire water, the local
:18:07. > :18:12.authorities. Most of the evdnts are free to access. Always good to hear.
:18:13. > :18:16.Henrietta, sometimes arty things can be seen as highbrow. Hourly going to
:18:17. > :18:20.get people in cage dinners? We have so many events. You can learn to
:18:21. > :18:28.crochet, learn to make your own trumpet, we have a festival song
:18:29. > :18:33.that Hope And Social have created for us. They are local band. There
:18:34. > :18:37.are arrangements for the song that you can download for your choir so
:18:38. > :18:42.there is something for everxbody. Sounds good. Already people are
:18:43. > :18:47.getting involved. In chiselled, they are turning the fountains ydllow!
:18:48. > :18:53.What do you make of that? It was a bit of brightness. We did not get
:18:54. > :18:56.much of that in Sheffield. Well today is BBC School Report day,
:18:57. > :18:59.where thousands of children across the UK produce and present their own
:19:00. > :19:02.news bulletins. One of the focuses this year has been the weather and
:19:03. > :19:05.school reporters from Horizon Community College in Barnsldy have
:19:06. > :19:14.been investigating just how important the weather forec`st is.
:19:15. > :19:22.We watch the weather forecast for a number of reasons... So we know what
:19:23. > :19:28.to wear. What to take with ts. And what to walk the dog in. But who
:19:29. > :19:32.else needs to know what the weather has in store each day? We h`ve been
:19:33. > :19:40.to Barnsley market and a farm to find out. How would you say the
:19:41. > :19:47.weather affected your busindss? Very much so. During the colder periods,
:19:48. > :19:52.there are stews and casseroles. You know? Obviously, during the summer
:19:53. > :19:57.period, people like colder things like salads and barbecue chhcken and
:19:58. > :20:01.things like that. Last year, when we had all of the heavy rainfall for a
:20:02. > :20:05.long period of time, we find that potato prices went really
:20:06. > :20:11.expensive. But it's not quite been as bad this year as it was last year
:20:12. > :20:15.because the rainfall has not been in the groin area is quite as luch as
:20:16. > :20:18.last year. January is the qtietest month and Easter is probablx the
:20:19. > :20:20.busiest because we have all the land is probably the busiest bec`use we
:20:21. > :20:23.have all the lands being born, both kids being born. It is ever so
:20:24. > :20:29.important that we get the starting right. If we get too many staff when
:20:30. > :20:36.it's quiet, then all of your profit is gone. Today we have learned why
:20:37. > :20:42.weather is important in bushnesses. For the grocer, it is all about the
:20:43. > :20:46.potato crops, especially last year. At the farm, it is about customers
:20:47. > :20:58.and staff in. So do not forget your jumpers!
:20:59. > :21:00.Brad from horizon school will be doing a special forecast after
:21:01. > :21:04.mine. Before then, a couple of pictures, the first of which is
:21:05. > :21:08.stocked bridges this morning. Can you believe it, eels storm laking it
:21:09. > :21:12.look as though it was snowing. That melted butter were some verx lively
