:00:00. > 3:59:59for the first time spotter planes find debris. That's all from the BBC

:00:00. > :00:08.Hello and welcome to Friday's Look News at Six

:00:09. > :00:12.Hello and welcome to Friday's Look North On the programme tonight ` The

:00:13. > :00:19.Sikh parents speaking out against the stigma of down's syndrome in

:00:20. > :00:26.ethnic minorities. People think it is a disease and they gave us advice

:00:27. > :00:30.to cure it. It is not a disease. We hear how families have been left

:00:31. > :00:33.feeling isolated. Also tonight... The hundreds of

:00:34. > :00:40.eviction notices served across Yorkshire as a result of the "spare

:00:41. > :00:43.room subsidy". And the Bradford Alhambra celebrates 100 years by

:00:44. > :00:54.staging its most ambitious performance yet.

:00:55. > :00:57.And in sport the latest on Leeds United struggling to pay players'

:00:58. > :01:04.wages, and I'm with Chesterfield fans ahead of their Wembley cup

:01:05. > :01:08.final. The clocks go forward this weekend and I have quite promising

:01:09. > :01:16.forecast to give you this evening. Join me for the details.

:01:17. > :01:20.But first tonight a couple from Leeds has spoken out about the

:01:21. > :01:37.stigma and isolation that's often felt by Asian families who have

:01:38. > :01:39.children with learning disabilities. Sarbjit Core and Jatinder

:01:40. > :01:42.Singh`Mehmi say they've come up against a lot of ignorance,

:01:43. > :01:45.including the belief that they've been cursed, simply because their

:01:46. > :01:50.son Gian has Down's Syndrome. Anna Crossley's been to meet the family.

:01:51. > :01:56.This three`year`old is a familiar face here, his parents have been

:01:57. > :02:02.bringing him to worship since he was a baby. Although they say they have

:02:03. > :02:06.always been made to feel welcome, people's reactions from elsewhere in

:02:07. > :02:19.the Seek community has not always been positive, just because Gian has

:02:20. > :02:24.down syndrome. People think it is a disease and they gave us advice on

:02:25. > :02:29.how to cure it. It is not a disease, it doesn't define his whole

:02:30. > :02:34.personality. The couple say there is stigma within other religions as

:02:35. > :02:45.well, but the pair sometimes are made to feel they have been polished

:02:46. > :02:51.with a child who has this. It is nothing I have eaten, the way I used

:02:52. > :02:59.to sit, what I used to watch. There is no blame, no curse, we see Gian

:03:00. > :03:02.as a gift. This couple clearly received a lot of support from their

:03:03. > :03:07.own temple, but they also want to let other parents know there is more

:03:08. > :03:11.help available in the wider community and cultural differences

:03:12. > :03:17.will be treated sensitively. The family is involved with a charity

:03:18. > :03:26.that supports children with down syndrome and their parents, Sunshine

:03:27. > :03:30.And Smiles. They welcome everyone, irrespective of ethnicity and

:03:31. > :03:34.religious beliefs. We realise some people don't want to come to a group

:03:35. > :03:38.and it might not be the right time for them to come to a group

:03:39. > :03:43.situation, so we also say we are very happy to meet people at home

:03:44. > :03:53.and talk about support they would find helpful. It is a culturally

:03:54. > :03:57.sensitive issue, but this couple feel it is important to reassure the

:03:58. > :04:02.parents that there is support out there, and having a child with a

:04:03. > :04:10.learning disability is not a curse or a punishment.

:04:11. > :04:13.A BBC investigation has revealed that rent arrears increased and

:04:14. > :04:16.hundreds of eviction notices have been served across Yorkshire as a

:04:17. > :04:19.direct result of the squeeze on housing benefits. In the last year

:04:20. > :04:32.more than a thousand tenants of council or Housing Association homes

:04:33. > :04:35.have moved. Out of more than 275,000 tenants across Yorkshire and the

:04:36. > :04:39.Humber more than 36,000 have been affected by the changes. Of those,

:04:40. > :04:42.more than ten thousand tenants that were up to date with payments are

:04:43. > :04:45.now in arrears, that's about twenty nine per cent. More than eight

:04:46. > :04:48.hundred people were served with eviction notices. While more than

:04:49. > :04:52.one thousand one hundred people have moved house. Our Political Editor

:04:53. > :04:57.Len Tingle has been looking at the figures. This is the spare room, the

:04:58. > :05:02.room that costs ?14 per week. Elizabeth is in her early 60s and

:05:03. > :05:07.has been unemployed for a couple of years. She lives alone on benefits

:05:08. > :05:10.of around ?70 a week and for the last year has had to pay some of

:05:11. > :05:17.that money to the council because she has a spare bedroom in her flat

:05:18. > :05:22.in Leeds. I have daughters and grandchildren, friends, and now

:05:23. > :05:30.there is another year to look forward to. Elizabeth isn't alone,

:05:31. > :05:34.in Leeds over 5000 tenants on benefits had to pay extra rent if

:05:35. > :05:39.they had a spare bedroom, 1700 of them went into arrears with their

:05:40. > :05:44.rent, but one key government objective was to encourage a switch

:05:45. > :05:50.to smaller properties. Only 300 of them did, around 6%. The real issue

:05:51. > :05:55.we found with the study that cuts across the north is that it is not

:05:56. > :06:01.just the rent arrears, it is the greater debt people are getting into

:06:02. > :06:07.which is related to this. The households we work with experienced

:06:08. > :06:14.debt of around ?3500 per household. I don't want to leave my home. It is

:06:15. > :06:22.a flat, a room at the top of the house. My grandchildren stay here

:06:23. > :06:27.with me at weekends sometimes. Leeds has not issued any eviction notices

:06:28. > :06:30.but across Yorkshire over 1000 have been served. In a statement the

:06:31. > :06:35.government said that the BBC figures show the success of its policies. It

:06:36. > :06:40.has reduced the housing benefit budget and at the same time it is on

:06:41. > :06:54.track for its five`year plan of seeing 30% of those with the spare

:06:55. > :06:58.bedroom move to a smaller house. And there will be more on that on

:06:59. > :07:09.the Sunday Politics Show at 11.15 here on BBC One. Later on Look

:07:10. > :07:11.North... The Sheffield couple making history by tying the knot at

:07:12. > :07:15.midnight. As soon as gay marriage becomes

:07:16. > :07:18.legal, Richie and Kyle are to say their vows.

:07:19. > :07:21.The Attorney General has lost his appeal against what he described as

:07:22. > :07:31.the "lenient" sentence given to a Sheffield ice`cream maker who kept

:07:32. > :07:34.another man as a slave. Dominic Grieve was attempting to increase

:07:35. > :07:37.the six and a half year jail term handed to David Rooke for false

:07:38. > :07:41.imprisonment and assault. He was convicted in January this year of

:07:42. > :07:44.keeping Craig Kinsella ` a man with learning difficulties ` in his

:07:45. > :07:48.garage and forcing him to live like a modern`day slave. But the Court of

:07:49. > :07:55.Appeal ruled the sentence wasn't too low. This was a difficult sentencing

:07:56. > :08:07.exercise, even for this experienced judge. We refuse to leave and the

:08:08. > :08:10.matter is concluded. 22 people have now been identified as suspects at

:08:11. > :08:12.the centre of the two ongoing inquiries into the Hillsborough

:08:13. > :08:15.disaster in 1989. 96 Liverpool football fans died at the Sheffield

:08:16. > :08:19.Wednesday ground. A mix of serving and retired police officers as well

:08:20. > :08:21.as others working for other organisations at the time are being

:08:22. > :08:24.interviewed. Alleged offences include manslaughter, misconduct in

:08:25. > :08:26.a public office, and perverting the course of justice.

:08:27. > :08:29.A petition's been launched calling for more information about the mass

:08:30. > :08:32.resignation of a North Yorkshire school's governing body. In February

:08:33. > :08:38.all the governors at Richmond School stood down, but the reasons why were

:08:39. > :08:42.unclear. The people behind this new petition say there's been a cover up

:08:43. > :08:47.and the community has a right to know what's happened. In a previous

:08:48. > :08:50.statement, North Yorkshire County Council said the governors left

:08:51. > :08:52.because of a serious breakdown in trust and their relationship with

:08:53. > :08:56.the school's leadership team. A pensioner from the Peak District,

:08:57. > :09:00.who became the most watched person in the world in the early days of

:09:01. > :09:02.YouTube, has died aged 86. Peter Oakley became an unlikely internet

:09:03. > :09:09.sensation when he started posting his own videos online. His first

:09:10. > :09:13.contribution received three million hits.

:09:14. > :09:17.As midnight strikes tonight, history will be made in Sheffield and in

:09:18. > :09:26.other towns and cities across the country as gay marriage becomes

:09:27. > :09:30.legal. South Yorkshire couple Richie Wood and Kyle Emerson will be among

:09:31. > :09:33.the first to tie the knot. They're getting married at Sheffield Town

:09:34. > :09:38.Hall in a special ceremony just after midnight. Kate Bradbrook has

:09:39. > :09:42.been to meet them on their big day. The town Hall is one of Sheffield's

:09:43. > :09:50.most historic buildings and tonight history will be made here. Richie

:09:51. > :09:58.Wood and Kyle Emerson, becoming one of the first same`sex couples in the

:09:59. > :10:04.country, tying the knot at midnight and now there is only hours to go.

:10:05. > :10:07.Kyle and Ritchie met at midnight seven years ago and will be the

:10:08. > :10:13.first couple in Sheffield to take advantage of the change in the law.

:10:14. > :10:24.Our relationship is no different to anyone else's, and as much as it is

:10:25. > :10:29.about gaining equality for us, it is about the marriage we are going

:10:30. > :10:32.into. The civil partnership automatically gives you the barrier,

:10:33. > :10:37.and we are excited to have the opportunity and the chance to get

:10:38. > :10:43.married. We have a lot of friends from up and down the UK, and some

:10:44. > :10:48.coming from Europe as well. We are excited and we are going to proceed

:10:49. > :10:52.with the ceremony as of the first chime of midnight so it will have

:10:53. > :10:57.that magical fairy tale theme to the wedding which is exactly what we

:10:58. > :11:01.wanted. It may not have been a whirlwind romance but the wedding

:11:02. > :11:07.has been planned in just 26 days, and with a little help from local

:11:08. > :11:12.businesses and loved ones, their dream Day is now a reality. Everyone

:11:13. > :11:18.has pulled together, and it is not over yet. We have tonight to come,

:11:19. > :11:25.so until it has happened I don't think anyone will relax. Because the

:11:26. > :11:29.ceremony is happening so late, the whole day has been turned on its

:11:30. > :11:36.head. After midnight, people will come through to the ceremony room

:11:37. > :11:38.where the couple will tie the knot. Same`sex marriage may seem

:11:39. > :11:45.unconventional at the moment but it will soon become the norm.

:11:46. > :12:01.Thanks for staying with us. Before seven o'clock: Fighting a financial

:12:02. > :12:08.handicap. And the Bradford Alhambra marks its centenary with the Lion

:12:09. > :12:11.King, its biggest show yet. Now onto sport and it's a big

:12:12. > :12:20.weekend for Chesterfield fans who are getting ready to go to Wembley

:12:21. > :12:23.for their cup final on Sunday. Yes, they play Peterborough for the

:12:24. > :12:30.Johnstone Paints Trophy and Shamir Masri is in Chesterfield for us now.

:12:31. > :12:40.Good evening. Good evening, I am here at the home of justice ``

:12:41. > :12:44.Chesterfield FC. The team themselves headed down sale this morning so

:12:45. > :12:48.they are already preparing for the big match, but my colleague caught

:12:49. > :12:53.up with them before they left to give them a big sendoff. There are

:12:54. > :12:59.some exciting events to look forward to round here, and the Chesterfield

:13:00. > :13:04.ladies love no one more than big Tom, that's Tommy Lee of course, the

:13:05. > :13:08.Chesterfield goalkeeper and his mates who after their final training

:13:09. > :13:15.session this morning said their goodbyes to fans who will soon be

:13:16. > :13:20.following them to Wembley. For the larger than usual media presence,

:13:21. > :13:25.there were some big messages to digest. They will be hoping to avoid

:13:26. > :13:29.Wembley and the play`offs in their quest to be automatically promoted

:13:30. > :13:35.instead. The priority since the start of the season has been

:13:36. > :13:43.promotion. We need to be in the top three come May and that is where our

:13:44. > :13:47.focus will be. We are in a good position, but we have some massive

:13:48. > :13:51.games to come on Sunday and afterwards. As the games become

:13:52. > :13:57.less, the intensity and the pressure builds up but it shouldn't really

:13:58. > :14:01.because it should be something you can look forward to. Are likely

:14:02. > :14:05.40,000 plus attendance at Wembley should provide a useful split of

:14:06. > :14:12.gate proceeds, but Chesterfield have been quick to change the subject.

:14:13. > :14:18.Pride for the supporters, for the day itself, that is what the game on

:14:19. > :14:22.Sunday is all about. It is not about finance. The point is that if the

:14:23. > :14:28.manager and the players get their way between now and many, this will

:14:29. > :14:32.be Chesterfield's only trip to Wembley this season, so enjoy it,

:14:33. > :14:48.and there is still time to work, flag`waving technique. I am here at

:14:49. > :14:57.the community hub at the stadium, and with the man behind it. It is a

:14:58. > :15:02.fantastic stadium. Yes, it is great, a number of community

:15:03. > :15:08.tenants, a great addition for the club and it shows what a great

:15:09. > :15:12.community focused this club has. Absolutely, the kids are enjoying

:15:13. > :15:19.themselves. Fantastic facility. Let's speak to a couple of fans,

:15:20. > :15:24.Ian, how much are you looking forward to this final? Really

:15:25. > :15:31.excited and it is on my bucket list so it has been fulfilled. I was away

:15:32. > :15:37.last time in Malta so I am making up for it. You have been supporting the

:15:38. > :15:43.club for quite some time, you were there two years ago and it was a

:15:44. > :15:48.bittersweet season. Yes, we won the trophy but we got relegated from the

:15:49. > :15:54.league. This time we are going to do the double. You had a bit of a

:15:55. > :16:01.stutter but you are looking to rectify that now. Yes, we can still

:16:02. > :16:06.get promotion and the title. Fantastic. The game is this Sunday,

:16:07. > :16:19.they play Peterborough and we will keep you updated on our Sunday

:16:20. > :16:29.bulletins. Good luck! It is another day, another Leeds

:16:30. > :16:32.United story. The players have agreed to defer part of their wages

:16:33. > :16:34.for March according to Professional Footballers' Association chief

:16:35. > :16:37.executive, Gordon Taylor. The players were due to receive their

:16:38. > :16:40.wages today, but only the general members of staff were paid.

:16:41. > :16:44.Businesman Massimo Cellino has paid the last two wage bills, but on

:16:45. > :16:47.Monday, the Football League blocked his takeover of the club, although

:16:48. > :16:53.the Italian has since lodged an appeal against the decision. There

:16:54. > :16:57.is an approximate amount that has been acceptable to the players. They

:16:58. > :17:03.are aware of the situation. There has been a meeting today with the

:17:04. > :17:07.players and things are looking to be sorted next week one way or the

:17:08. > :17:10.other. Castleford have gone back to the top

:17:11. > :17:14.of Super League after demolishing London Broncos. The Tigers won 54`6

:17:15. > :17:17.at the Hive in Barnet. There were two tries apiece for Justin Carney

:17:18. > :17:23.and Michael Shenton. Carney is the League's top try scorer with seven

:17:24. > :17:26.this season. As for Shenton, his coach Daryl Powell says he's playing

:17:27. > :17:33.as well as at anytime during his career.

:17:34. > :17:39.That is a cracking story, at the top of the super league. Well there's

:17:40. > :17:43.also an important sporting weekend ahead in Doncaster where a crowd of

:17:44. > :17:47.around 15,000 is expected to welcome in the new flat racing season. It's

:17:48. > :17:50.not just a big weekend for the venue, but also for the local racing

:17:51. > :17:54.industry, as Ian Bucknell reports. At 26, Scott Dixon is one of the

:17:55. > :18:09.youngest racehorse trainers in the business, he is based near the

:18:10. > :18:15.village of barbed `` Babworth and this is an exciting time. We always

:18:16. > :18:23.try to set our stall out to have a few winners round Doncaster. Horse

:18:24. > :18:27.racing is big business here, and Scott has eight stable staff. He

:18:28. > :18:33.says that for a small training operation like this it can be a

:18:34. > :18:37.struggle to survive. It is having a bit of luck to get a good horse,

:18:38. > :18:44.that is the dream, that's why most people get into it. The dream of

:18:45. > :18:46.having a top`class horse that will take them around the country and

:18:47. > :18:50.hopefully around the world. Doncaster racehorse helps to support

:18:51. > :18:59.the nearby racing industry by encouraging its members to invest in

:19:00. > :19:03.horses trained by Scott and other local yards. They are an integral

:19:04. > :19:10.part of our business, without them we wouldn't have an event put on.

:19:11. > :19:14.For Scott, a win on Saturday could change his fortunes forever,

:19:15. > :19:25.attracting new owners and more horses. As with so much in racing, a

:19:26. > :19:29.lot is at stake. Sheffield is known as the steel city

:19:30. > :19:32.for a good reason and its metal used to be found on golf courses

:19:33. > :19:35.everywhere before lighter and more durable materials came into use. A

:19:36. > :19:38.Rotherham company is aiming to put Sheffield steel clubs back on the

:19:39. > :19:41.fairway. Their only handicap is their prototype has been deemed too

:19:42. > :19:43.risky for conventional financial backing. Our business correspondent

:19:44. > :19:51.Danni Hewson has this exclusive report. Precision comes as standard

:19:52. > :19:55.at Newburgh engineering from aerospace to military projects, the

:19:56. > :19:59.core business is booming, but despite their proven track record in

:20:00. > :20:04.new scheme to make golf clubs has struggled to get off the ground. A

:20:05. > :20:10.hangover from the credit crunch, finding finance is stopping

:20:11. > :20:15.innovation at the first tee. Most don't understand it so they tend to

:20:16. > :20:18.move away from things they don't understand and if they can't see an

:20:19. > :20:23.immediate return. It has been difficult to raise money and we have

:20:24. > :20:32.tried to get funding from various routes and failed. We are going to

:20:33. > :20:37.Kick starter, and anyone can take part in the project. From Monday,

:20:38. > :20:48.anyone can pledge money to the project but only those offering

:20:49. > :20:54.?1000 will get one of the putters. I'm not a golfer but I'm told this

:20:55. > :20:59.could bring about a new era, repatriating golf club production to

:21:00. > :21:02.South Yorkshire with that all`important stamp of made in

:21:03. > :21:05.Sheffield. The project is already attracting support from some high

:21:06. > :21:12.profile figures, even if this sportsman is better known for his

:21:13. > :21:17.football skills. I think it is brilliant for Sheffield, Yorkshire,

:21:18. > :21:20.for Britain. A lot of our manufacturing has gone to China and

:21:21. > :21:24.they are putting the prices up. They don't really care about the

:21:25. > :21:32.workmanship, they just want to get paid and I think there is a bit of

:21:33. > :21:38.pride that it will be in Sheffield. So why now after so many years is

:21:39. > :21:44.steel making it back on the fairway? We can do it because we have the

:21:45. > :21:57.technology, the materials and the reputation. Big dreams, now they

:21:58. > :22:07.just need the cash. Here we go,

:22:08. > :22:25.it is embarrassing! I have only ever done crazy golf in Ambleside, once!

:22:26. > :22:40.Give it some welly. You can win this. Absolutely hopeless. Is that

:22:41. > :22:44.your teacup? It is mouldy in the bottom. There we are. We wish them

:22:45. > :22:48.all the best with the project anyway.

:22:49. > :22:55.Bradford's Alhambra theatre turns 100 this year. To celebrate, it's

:22:56. > :23:00.staging the largest show in its history. Disney's The Lion King will

:23:01. > :23:04.play for seven weeks at the theatre as part of its UK tour and Look

:23:05. > :23:17.North's had exclusive access backstage. Here's David Tracz. The

:23:18. > :23:23.music in the show is familiar to a generation. The productions and

:23:24. > :23:28.adaptation of the 1994 Disney film. Since it premiered on Broadway, this

:23:29. > :23:36.production has toured the world. It is the story of Simba and the

:23:37. > :23:42.journey he goes through in his life to become a king. This is one of the

:23:43. > :23:49.show's principal characters. It is a fairy tale, she is the one calling

:23:50. > :23:56.the animals to praise the birth of the King. Some roles in the

:23:57. > :24:04.production are also played by puppets. You can get quite a lot of

:24:05. > :24:14.character out of this puppet. He has a trigger for his beak, and a cradle

:24:15. > :24:22.here that works his eyes. The guys that come in here have about five or

:24:23. > :24:25.six weeks to learn the puppetry. 21 trucks are used to transport this

:24:26. > :24:30.production across the country and it is the biggest show the Alhambra has

:24:31. > :24:35.had in its history. It means a lot for the cast to be here. We are

:24:36. > :24:40.really proud to be here in Yorkshire, also in this Alhambra

:24:41. > :24:50.Theatre. The show runs in the Alhambra until May.

:24:51. > :25:00.That looks something else! I'm sure it will be fantastically successful.

:25:01. > :25:06.Looking forward to that. You were terrible! What about all those hours

:25:07. > :25:13.you spend on the fairway? What do you mean all those hours! This is a

:25:14. > :25:17.picture of cherry blossom, it has obviously been a grey day. The

:25:18. > :25:25.bluebells out there, thank you for that. This was the 29th of March

:25:26. > :25:40.last year, and of course it was one of the coldest and snowiest Marches

:25:41. > :25:43.on record. British summer Time starts on Sunday, both Saturday

:25:44. > :25:48.afternoon and Sunday afternoon looked promising with sunshine,

:25:49. > :25:54.although both mornings could get off to a great start. We are pulling up

:25:55. > :26:00.dry air from the near continent, and temperatures could reach 17

:26:01. > :26:06.degrees. There is a lot of cloud, still giving some patchy rain and

:26:07. > :26:11.drizzle in places. It stays cloudy overnight, some mistiness and hill

:26:12. > :26:20.fog and further patchy rain in places with most temperatures around

:26:21. > :26:23.six Celsius. The sun will rise in the morning at 5:48am, your next

:26:24. > :26:38.high water time: A very slow start to the weekend,

:26:39. > :26:42.some hill fog. It is a slow process but gradually the cloud will break

:26:43. > :26:48.up, south Yorkshire will be sunny by the end of the morning. Elsewhere it

:26:49. > :26:53.might take until the afternoon but it will be fine and sunny, and

:26:54. > :26:58.inland it will become warm as well. Not one along the coast with a fresh

:26:59. > :27:03.easterly wind, just nine degrees in Scarborough. The best of the

:27:04. > :27:08.conditions will be further west. You can see 16 in Leeds and Sheffield. A

:27:09. > :27:15.repeat performance on Sunday, perhaps less in the way of low

:27:16. > :27:22.cloud, then it brightens up readily. The first day of British

:27:23. > :27:27.summertime looks beautiful, 16 or 17 Celsius. On Monday, more in the way

:27:28. > :27:33.of cloud and the risk of some scattered showers. That is the

:27:34. > :27:43.forecast. I am looking forward to Stuart Lancaster tonight, having a

:27:44. > :27:46.chat with him. The weekend is set up nicely. Of all good weekend,

:27:47. > :27:46.goodbye. chat with him. The weekend is set up

:27:47. > :27:49.nicely. Of all good weekend, goodbye.
