:00:10. > :00:14.Good evening. A protest has taken place against plans to close more

:00:15. > :00:17.than half of Rotherham's children's centres. Thousands of families would

:00:18. > :00:21.be affected if the closures go ahead, and unions say over 100 jobs

:00:22. > :00:26.would be lost. Here's Dave Edwards. Kids not cuts! Kids not cuts!

:00:27. > :00:30.Campaigners and their children certainly made themselves heard in

:00:31. > :00:33.Rotherham this lunchtime. About a hundred of them marched from the

:00:34. > :00:38.Town Hall down into the town centre calling for the council to change

:00:39. > :00:41.their mind. We're here to send a message to the council that they

:00:42. > :00:44.need to think again. Rotherham can't afford these cuts, they'll hurt our

:00:45. > :00:48.communities and devastate the lives of children and families across

:00:49. > :00:51.Rotherham. About 9,000 children under five and

:00:52. > :00:55.their families use the 22 children's centres, but the council wants to

:00:56. > :00:59.close 13 of them as it looks to cut ?2.2 million from its budget for

:01:00. > :01:06.early years and childcare services. Parents and staff are angry.

:01:07. > :01:10.My little boy attends a children's centre, and my husband was out of

:01:11. > :01:13.work at the end of last year. And without the children's centres

:01:14. > :01:17.providing the support, I wouldn't be where I am today. We both work full

:01:18. > :01:21.time now, and without the children's centre being there for us, we

:01:22. > :01:24.wouldn't be able to work. There's more and more children, families

:01:25. > :01:27.that are moving into the Rotherham area, so why these services being

:01:28. > :01:30.cut? I just don't get it. Targeted at a vulnerable groups,

:01:31. > :01:33.it's things like early education, family support and parenting classes

:01:34. > :01:38.that are provided at the centres, like this one in Kimberworth. This

:01:39. > :01:43.is one of the 13 children's centres that are set to close. The council

:01:44. > :01:47.admit the closures will affect the quality of children's services here

:01:48. > :01:53.in Rotherham, but they say they have to save money. And here in a Labour

:01:54. > :01:56.heartland, it's no surprise that central government gets the blame.

:01:57. > :02:00.It's not the fault of the council, they've had their money removed for

:02:01. > :02:04.these, so they've got to make choices, but what do we do? Do we

:02:05. > :02:06.close Sure Starts or close an OAP home?

:02:07. > :02:09.A public consultation is running until the end of April. About a

:02:10. > :02:11.thousand people have already made their views known.

:02:12. > :02:17.David Edwards, BBC Look North, Rotherham.

:02:18. > :02:24.Now on to today's football results. In the Yorkshire derby, a great win

:02:25. > :02:29.for Doncaster, who beat Leeds 2`1. It means Rovers edge closer to

:02:30. > :02:32.safety. Huddersfield drew 1`1 with Reading. Sheffield Wednesday lost at

:02:33. > :02:36.home 4`1 against Watford. And a vital result for Barnsley, their 4`1

:02:37. > :02:39.win at Yeovil gives them hope of avoiding the drop.

:02:40. > :02:42.In League One, a good away win for Bradford, they beat Leyton Orient

:02:43. > :02:46.1`0. Rotherham extended their unbeaten run to 15 games with a 2`1

:02:47. > :02:52.win against Bristol City. And Sheffield United lost 2`1 after

:02:53. > :02:58.conceding a late goal at Swindon. In League Two, it finished York

:02:59. > :03:03.zero, Burton zero. And in the Conference, Halifax beat Luton 2`0.

:03:04. > :03:07.And you can see all the action from today's matches on BBC One tonight.

:03:08. > :03:10.The Football League Show is on right after Match Of The Day at 11:55.

:03:11. > :03:14.Now, Chesterfield Football Club and their fans will already be gearing

:03:15. > :03:17.up for their big day at Wembley tomorrow. The Spirites won the

:03:18. > :03:20.competition two years ago when they beat Swindon Town. Yesterday, the

:03:21. > :03:25.team set off for tomorrow's Johnstone's Paint Trophy final. They

:03:26. > :03:30.take on Peterborough, who are in League One, where the Spirites hope

:03:31. > :03:33.to be next season. We can now go to Wembley knowing we're in a strong

:03:34. > :03:37.league position, enjoy Wembley, and then come and get promoted if we

:03:38. > :03:41.can. They are the things that that my job as a manager, as the weeks

:03:42. > :03:45.run out, is to try and deliver. Come the end of the season, if we can

:03:46. > :03:48.deliver both, fantastic. If we can deliver one, then we'd be happy.

:03:49. > :03:51.In squash, world champion Nick Matthew beat fellow Yorkshireman

:03:52. > :03:53.James Wilstrop to win the Canary Wharf Classic in London. Matthew,

:03:54. > :03:56.from Sheffield, seen here in the black shorts, beat his Pontefract

:03:57. > :04:00.rival in three straight games, dominating the final. The game

:04:01. > :04:05.lasted just 51 minutes, the shortest final on record. It's Nick Matthew's

:04:06. > :04:09.fourth title. And finally, congratulations to

:04:10. > :04:12.Dickie Bird. The former umpire was this morning voted in as the new

:04:13. > :04:16.president of Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Dickie, who is now 80

:04:17. > :04:18.years old, had played for Yorkshire as a player before he became an

:04:19. > :04:27.umpire. Now the weather. Hello again, good evening. The

:04:28. > :04:31.clocks spring forward an hour tonight, and there is a definite

:04:32. > :04:34.feeling of spring in the air. As we go through this evening, we'll have

:04:35. > :04:38.some sunshine to end the day, and then cloud building in places as we

:04:39. > :04:42.go through the night. We will see some patches of mist and fog

:04:43. > :04:44.developing. It isn't going to be a cold night, temperatures only

:04:45. > :04:47.dropping back to six or seven degrees Celsius. That mist and fog

:04:48. > :04:51.lifts tomorrow, we will start to lose the cloud, a day of hazy

:04:52. > :04:56.sunshine, temperatures up to a height of 16 or 17 degrees, and it

:04:57. > :05:01.turns more unsettled next week. That is at from this added 18, we

:05:02. > :05:13.are back tomorrow at 6:50. For now, bye`bye. `` the Saturday team.

:05:14. > :05:20.Good evening. We achieved 20 degrees in the sunshine today but, in

:05:21. > :05:25.contrast, under the cloud in Northern Ireland, just nine. With

:05:26. > :05:33.the cloud, just seven in the North East. We take the contrast into

:05:34. > :05:36.tomorrow. At least the cloud here, creeping back inland, will prevent

:05:37. > :05:45.textures falling too low, down to six overnight. -- temperatures. Less

:05:46. > :05:54.fog in the south and east. But it will be an issue further north.

:05:55. > :06:05.Again, a lovely start to the day before taking a while to left, the

:06:06. > :06:09.cloud lingering. It will be pretty cloudy and great but hopefully we

:06:10. > :06:10.will see fewer showers in Northern Ireland than
