:00:15. > :00:46.If we could be reunited, it would mean everything. The city on course

:00:47. > :00:51.to become the first in the country to offer free Wi`Fi to all. It has

:00:52. > :01:03.been another unsettled day but there is good news on the horizon.

:01:04. > :01:10.Good evening and welcome to the programme.

:01:11. > :01:17.For five years there has been precious hope for the family of

:01:18. > :01:26.Claudia Lawrence. For the first time, 59`year`old man has been

:01:27. > :01:37.arrested for her murder. He has been named as Michael shelling.

:01:38. > :01:40.He is Michael Snelling who is 59`years`old and from York.

:01:41. > :01:42.Let me just describe to you where we are tonight.

:01:43. > :01:45.Claudia's house is in the Heworth area of York.

:01:46. > :01:49.We're at a house half a mile away in the Burnholme area of the city where

:01:50. > :01:51.forensic officers have been carrying out searches all afternoon.

:01:52. > :01:57.And that's close to York University, where Claudia worked as a chef.

:01:58. > :02:08.The headlines became increasingly grim.

:02:09. > :02:16.The day when the attention of the media fell on a semidetached house

:02:17. > :02:21.in York at the home of the 59`year`old man arrested by the

:02:22. > :02:26.Claudia Lawrence investigation team. One of a series of searches being

:02:27. > :02:33.carried out across York but still Claudia has not been found. At the

:02:34. > :02:38.local pub a feud doors away, rumours spread today that it is thought the

:02:39. > :02:50.man arrested may also have been a regular hair but not for some time.

:02:51. > :03:02.We used to go after golf. We always had a normal conversation. The man

:03:03. > :03:08.arrested is thought to have worked at York university. There has been

:03:09. > :03:13.reaction from family and friends. I always said when they started again,

:03:14. > :03:17.the only way forward was to go back, write to the beginning and

:03:18. > :03:27.they have taken it on board what I have said and they are doing that.

:03:28. > :03:32.Does it remain a total mystery? Hopefully this is one step closer

:03:33. > :03:39.and the beginning of the end but who knows. It is in the hands of the

:03:40. > :03:42.police and I am grateful that despite what people have said that

:03:43. > :03:47.they are not doing enough, they clearly are doing a lot behind the

:03:48. > :03:52.scenes that we don't see. This afternoon, the search scenes spread

:03:53. > :03:56.to a house where Northumbria police said there was a link with the

:03:57. > :04:00.Lawrence investigation. Back in York, further arrests may follow but

:04:01. > :04:05.there is still quite some way to go in the case.

:04:06. > :04:09.Well Martin Dales is a close friend of the Lawrence family and I spoke

:04:10. > :04:31.to him earlier to get his reaction. The work that the police have been

:04:32. > :04:36.doing has brought things to light that they need to know and need to

:04:37. > :04:45.investigate. The way the public have engaged with the revitalisation of

:04:46. > :04:49.the Claudia case in the autumn has been terrific and there is no doubt

:04:50. > :04:55.the information that people put in means a huge amount, both to the

:04:56. > :05:01.family and to the police in trying to work out where Claudia is. The

:05:02. > :05:06.investigation seemed to stall but the fresh impetus before Christmas

:05:07. > :05:13.clearly must have helped. We wish them well in trying to find what has

:05:14. > :05:20.happened. This is one part of it. We need to see how this transpired,

:05:21. > :05:24.this particular incident. At the end of the day, there is a process of

:05:25. > :05:30.law that has to be followed and it is important that it happens. The

:05:31. > :05:37.one thing the family needs to do is to find Claudia. That is uppermost

:05:38. > :05:41.in the minds of the family. It has always been a twin process. The

:05:42. > :05:47.police have always taken the suspected murder route. The family,

:05:48. > :05:49.in the absence of any body of Claudia Com have taken a more

:05:50. > :06:04.hopeful liners in the absence of that, there is still hope. How is

:06:05. > :06:10.Peter today? It is a tough time. It raised it in 2009 when it became a

:06:11. > :06:15.case for the police. Not an easy day at all and I am sure everybody will

:06:16. > :06:22.be thinking of the family at this time as matters move on. Most people

:06:23. > :06:26.in York can tell you the chronology of the disappearance of Claudia. She

:06:27. > :06:31.was last seen on March five years ago 2009. The last day was March 18

:06:32. > :06:36.and she was seen walking towards her house. The next day, she failed to

:06:37. > :06:39.turn up to work and also missed an appointment with one of her friends.

:06:40. > :06:46.The day after that, her father phoned the police.

:06:47. > :06:56.My name is Peter Lawrence, I am concerned about my daughter.

:06:57. > :06:59.Father's phone call starts the beginning of a mystery that has

:07:00. > :07:06.baffled police for the last five years. On 19th of March 2009 Claudia

:07:07. > :07:12.Lawrence else to arrive at her work as a chef. It is unusual. She is a

:07:13. > :07:18.reliable employee and was at work the day before just as normal. For a

:07:19. > :07:27.month, the police make detailed searches and the surrounding area ``

:07:28. > :07:30.in the surrounding area. Five weeks after her disappearance, police

:07:31. > :07:34.revealed they think she has been murdered. Any murder investigation

:07:35. > :07:41.has to approve a death. At the moment, we have no proof of

:07:42. > :07:47.Claudia's death, however, five weeks on since her disappearance, we also

:07:48. > :07:52.have no proof of her life so I am investigating this disappearance as

:07:53. > :07:56.one of suspected murder. The case features several times on Crimewatch

:07:57. > :08:00.as the theories come and go. A couple were seen are going on the

:08:01. > :08:09.morning she disappeared and with a relevant? Nothing needs to Claudia.

:08:10. > :08:15.There is something missing. A very important thing missing and that is

:08:16. > :08:18.Claudia. Five years on and with a trail seemingly cold coming North

:08:19. > :08:22.Yorkshire police launch a review of the case and search her house again

:08:23. > :08:28.and this time find new fingerprints will stop in March, it is revealed

:08:29. > :08:34.DNA has been found in a cigarette butt in Claudia's car. Footage is

:08:35. > :08:36.found of two more vehicles that interest the police and witnesses

:08:37. > :08:42.describe two more men seen separately, won his 30s and the

:08:43. > :08:48.other in his 50s. Today, news of an arrest. The first on suspicion of

:08:49. > :08:55.murder. The most extensive enquiry ever seen in the city of York.

:08:56. > :09:10.With me now is a former policeman who has some up`to`date policing

:09:11. > :09:15.techniques. Five years ago, I said at some point the police are going

:09:16. > :09:20.to go knocking on somebody's door matters what has appeared to have

:09:21. > :09:27.happened now. From 2009, right through to this present day, there

:09:28. > :09:32.is two key things. One is the tenacity of Peter Lawrence and his

:09:33. > :09:35.family for the campaign which has been relentless in keeping that in

:09:36. > :09:40.the public attention. Also the tenacity of the police. It is never

:09:41. > :09:46.easy and you never know what is going on behind the investigation

:09:47. > :09:51.team. It can be a frustrating process. The advances like in the

:09:52. > :09:55.Stephen Lawrence case, to potentially now, you have to keep

:09:56. > :10:01.things and always be prepared that with the advance of technology and

:10:02. > :10:07.DNA and forensic evidence moving forward and the profiling, this can

:10:08. > :10:12.lead to looking at what might have happened and bring some closure. A

:10:13. > :10:19.fresh look clearly helped because it became a cold case. How much did

:10:20. > :10:25.that provide a new impetus? The original investigating team will

:10:26. > :10:28.have... It would be a fault of what they have done. It is down to the

:10:29. > :10:36.forensics. When you step back from the case, it can and you hear of

:10:37. > :10:41.these cold cases going on. This could well have been the case of a

:10:42. > :10:47.fresh pair of eyes we looking through things. It sometimes works

:10:48. > :10:52.and I am hopeful, not only for the people who have followed this case

:10:53. > :10:58.because it has been such a high`profile case. We are still

:10:59. > :11:04.searching for Claude. We are. Let's not forget, potentially she may be

:11:05. > :11:09.alive. You have to keep that hope alive. At the very least, what I

:11:10. > :11:15.want for the Lawrence family and people who have shown such interest

:11:16. > :11:19.in this case, that there is some closure for everybody. That is the

:11:20. > :11:25.next question can stop what happens next? The family may be cautious

:11:26. > :11:34.about this news. I believe there is a long way to go in this case. The

:11:35. > :11:40.questioning will go on for up to 72 hours. The police have made it clear

:11:41. > :11:44.that further arrests could follow and it may well be that he could be

:11:45. > :11:50.released on police bail. I don't think we are very near to the end

:11:51. > :11:56.but clearly this is the biggest breakthrough by a long way in the

:11:57. > :12:00.whole five`year saga. Just to round off, the admiration you have for the

:12:01. > :12:08.whole family keeping this in the news. It has been a momentous drive

:12:09. > :12:13.by Peter Lawrence to keep this absolutely at the forefront of

:12:14. > :12:16.everybody's mind. There has been new pic `` newspaper campaigns, train

:12:17. > :12:24.station campaigns. At the time they didn't know who the offender was.

:12:25. > :12:29.Recently there has been updates on Crimewatch UK. Thank you very much

:12:30. > :12:35.indeed. Let us return to Amy for the rest of the news.

:12:36. > :12:38.Let's turn to the rest of the day's news.

:12:39. > :12:41.An inquest into the death of Leeds schoolteacher Ann Maguire has heard

:12:42. > :12:44.the fatal blow she suffered was a stab wound to the neck.

:12:45. > :12:47.Mrs Maguire died in her classroom at the Corpus Christi College

:12:48. > :12:51.A 15`year`old boy has been charged with her murder.

:12:52. > :12:54.The inquest was adjourned until legal proceedings have been

:12:55. > :13:00.A specialist heart ward for women at the Leeds General Infirmary is to

:13:01. > :13:02.be temporarily closed because of a shortage of nurses.

:13:03. > :13:06.The 22 bed unit will shut to new admissions on Thursday with all

:13:07. > :13:08.patients being looked after in other parts of the hospital.

:13:09. > :13:11.The Trust says they will review the decision once enough qualified

:13:12. > :13:19.Five sheep were killed and five others injured in a vicious dog

:13:20. > :13:24.We should warn you, you may find some of these pictures distressing.

:13:25. > :13:27.It happened at a farm in Blaxton near Doncaster.

:13:28. > :13:30.The ten sheep were grazing close to a house when they were

:13:31. > :13:34.It is thought two large dogs were responsible, but it's unclear

:13:35. > :13:38.Thankfully five sheep have survived, though only after receiving

:13:39. > :13:55.Please know where your dog is and look after it. At this time of year

:13:56. > :14:00.when people are starting to go out after a wet winter into the

:14:01. > :14:05.countryside meeting lots of newborn lambs, it is very relevant that they

:14:06. > :14:08.are careful about keeping their dog in close control.

:14:09. > :14:11.Work begins in York today on the start of scheme

:14:12. > :14:14.which will deliver free wi`fi to all, right across the city.

:14:15. > :14:18.The scale is unprecedented in the UK and it should make a city famous

:14:19. > :14:20.for its heritage just as well known for its technology.

:14:21. > :14:31.Here's our business correspondent Danni Hewson.

:14:32. > :14:36.People come for the history but use the cutting edge to enjoy

:14:37. > :14:38.it, from posting holiday snaps to booking the next attraction,

:14:39. > :14:42.millions of Internet connections are made every second.

:14:43. > :14:45.Now York is about to make it easier, offering free unlimited Wi`Fi to

:14:46. > :14:48.all right across the city. Following a successful trial,

:14:49. > :14:50.the kit is being rolled out starting in the city centre in time

:14:51. > :14:56.for the Grand Depart so you can keep up with the news.

:14:57. > :15:00.The kit they are using is designed with the likes of stadiums

:15:01. > :15:04.and other areas in mind. The equipment is ` capable

:15:05. > :15:07.of handling thousands of users. The scale is unprecedented and will

:15:08. > :15:11.make York the most connected city in the UK if not in Europe.

:15:12. > :15:16.If you are a York resident, you might be asking who is paying

:15:17. > :15:19.the bill. This is a private sector investment

:15:20. > :15:22.with some funding coming from our super connected city programme

:15:23. > :15:25.which is coming from European funding and central government.

:15:26. > :15:28.There is no money being put in from the City of York Council

:15:29. > :15:32.and residents. Some of the biggest attractions

:15:33. > :15:35.in the world now list their connectivity

:15:36. > :15:38.as a unique selling point. You can pick up where to go,

:15:39. > :15:41.what to do. I am not

:15:42. > :15:45.at a loose end today because I am at work but I am picking up e`mails

:15:46. > :15:47.and answering stuff as I go along. A lot

:15:48. > :15:51.of people use their smart phones for finding their way and if you

:15:52. > :15:55.have Wi`Fi, you have no problems. You can access your map.

:15:56. > :15:59.Wi`Fi is a great enabler and we can change people's habits by

:16:00. > :16:05.taking them down the streets of York that don't get a lot of foot fall.

:16:06. > :16:09.The first phase will start appearing from today.

:16:10. > :16:10.Unobtrusive in the real world, they will pack a massive punch

:16:11. > :16:17.in the virtual one. Labour leader Ed Miliband has told

:16:18. > :16:21.Look North that he's got the right policies to do well at the local

:16:22. > :16:25.and European elections next week. His party is preparing to do battle

:16:26. > :16:28.in both campaigns a week But because it's

:16:29. > :16:32.the only time outside of a general election when all voters can take

:16:33. > :16:36.part, it's seen as a test of how James Vincent has been on the

:16:37. > :16:50.West Yorkshire campaign trail with Is that for me?

:16:51. > :16:53.Thank you so much. They are not voters just yet but

:16:54. > :16:57.their mums and dads are listening. I'm looking for some red.

:16:58. > :17:00.As much as they want votes now, Ed Miliband and labour know it is

:17:01. > :17:05.all about getting the biggest share at the general election next year.

:17:06. > :17:08.We can make a difference to the mums here because we're going to

:17:09. > :17:11.have 25 hours free childcare for all three and four`year`olds

:17:12. > :17:14.with working parents. That is up from 15 hours

:17:15. > :17:19.at the moment. We have got it costed and paid

:17:20. > :17:23.for by increasing the bank levy and it is part of Labour's campaign

:17:24. > :17:26.to tackle the cost of living crisis that so many people are facing

:17:27. > :17:28.in childcare, energy, housing. Those are the bread

:17:29. > :17:31.and butter issues of this local election campaign.

:17:32. > :17:34.Ed Miliband has been making the most of his Yorkshire connections.

:17:35. > :17:36.He spent four years in Horsforth in Leeds growing up.

:17:37. > :17:41.Do you know the school called Featherbank Mount?

:17:42. > :17:44.I went there just down the road. Yorkshire is where

:17:45. > :17:47.the labour movement started and he needs that local support now.

:17:48. > :17:51.There are worries that this election may show it isn't strong

:17:52. > :17:54.enough to challenge next year. It is your stomping ground.

:17:55. > :17:59.It is. It is where I grew up.

:18:00. > :18:02.What happens if you don't do well in this election?

:18:03. > :18:06.We are fighting for every vote and I will let them decide who they will

:18:07. > :18:10.want to vote for. I hope they will vote Labour

:18:11. > :18:13.because we have the right answers. I think we're answering the things

:18:14. > :18:17.people are worried about which is the future of this country and

:18:18. > :18:19.whether it works for them and that is Labour's picture this election.

:18:20. > :18:22.Let's tackle the cost of living crisis

:18:23. > :18:24.and make the country work for you. You did badly in the last European

:18:25. > :18:27.elections. We want to do as well

:18:28. > :18:31.as possible but I feel confident they have the right message and we

:18:32. > :18:34.are talking about how we can make a difference to people's lives.

:18:35. > :18:38.A lot has been made about your image.

:18:39. > :18:42.Does it wind you up when people have a go at you?

:18:43. > :18:45.I have got used to it and it comes with the territory.

:18:46. > :18:48.The thing for me is talk about the issues that matter to people.

:18:49. > :18:52.There is lots of Westminster nonsense that talk about the things

:18:53. > :18:54.that really matter, whether it is energy bills or wages, or housing.

:18:55. > :19:03.People want a politics and the Labour Party on their side.

:19:04. > :19:05.Sounds like you would rather be in the sweet shop than down

:19:06. > :19:08.in Westminster. You learn much more

:19:09. > :19:11.a day outside Westminster than a week in Westminster.

:19:12. > :19:13.Talking to people about their lives, their experiences,

:19:14. > :19:16.that is how we make the best policy and the best politics.

:19:17. > :19:19.This is what it is all about, meeting the voters to make sure

:19:20. > :19:23.they are voting for him. It is a dress rehearsal for 2015.

:19:24. > :19:30.His future may depend on how his party gets on later this month.

:19:31. > :19:33.And there's more information on the parties and candidates can be found

:19:34. > :19:41.In football, York City will have to come from behind to keep

:19:42. > :19:45.Michael Coulson cut inside and shot just wide for the Minstermen

:19:46. > :19:49.But a goal from their former player Matty Blair

:19:50. > :20:03.was enough to give Fleetwood a 1`0 lead go into Friday's second leg.

:20:04. > :20:14.We weren't ourselves. We had a real go and we created chances. We have

:20:15. > :20:16.to be more ruthless when the time comes.

:20:17. > :20:19.In cricket, Yorkshire have blitzed to their second County Championship

:20:20. > :20:25.They polished off Warwickshire's first innings for 200 before lunch

:20:26. > :20:39.Apologies now for getting our dates mixed up last night.

:20:40. > :20:42.The second leg of Leeds Carnegie's play`off semi`final at London Welsh

:20:43. > :20:47.is this Sunday and not Saturday as we reported.

:20:48. > :20:51.We plan to preview that game and Rotherham Titans semi against

:20:52. > :20:57.And let's end on a high note with congratulations

:20:58. > :21:00.to Mr Barnsley, Norman Rimmington, who's won a special award

:21:01. > :21:05.Norman still works in the laundry at Barnsley

:21:06. > :21:08.after doing almost every job at the club since joining in 1946.

:21:09. > :21:14.His loyalty and hard work has been recognised by

:21:15. > :21:27.It must be a pain getting those grass stains out of those whites.

:21:28. > :21:40.Don't you think Paul? There is this talk about a keep

:21:41. > :21:46.we've `` heatwave that is going on for ever more. There is some nice

:21:47. > :21:52.weather on the way. First of all, two lovely pictures and this one is

:21:53. > :22:01.beautiful. It is St Peter's Church with a stormy sky there. There has

:22:02. > :22:04.been some heavy downpours today. A dramatic sunrise here in

:22:05. > :22:18.Scarborough. You can pick the pictures coming in.

:22:19. > :22:26.Let's have a look at the skyline outside Leeds now. It has cleared up

:22:27. > :22:31.very nicely. Those heavy showers have pushed away to the east. There

:22:32. > :22:39.is one or two isolated showers still left. There should be some pleasant

:22:40. > :22:44.sunshine around and tomorrow looks mostly fine with sunny periods and

:22:45. > :22:48.it should feel warmer. This ridge of high pressure pushes in from the

:22:49. > :22:53.south`west. You can see on the satellite picture we had some big

:22:54. > :22:58.clouds today that brought a lot of rain. We had some localised flooding

:22:59. > :23:03.in places. It looks like those showers are already beginning to

:23:04. > :23:08.diminish in intensity. There is one or two showers to the north but they

:23:09. > :23:20.will be dying a death through the night. It is a chilly night for mid

:23:21. > :23:23.May. Temperatures could get down to five seconds `` five Celsius but in

:23:24. > :23:38.the towns and cities, it could be more around seven Celsius.

:23:39. > :23:46.A glorious start with clear blue skies across the whole of Yorkshire.

:23:47. > :23:52.Plenty of sunshine first thing in the morning. As temperatures rise,
