:00:00. > :00:00.Good evening, welcome to Thursday's Look North.

:00:00. > :00:08.Stopping terrorists, drug smugglers and people traffickers.

:00:09. > :00:11.We go behind the scenes of a major police operation to stop

:00:12. > :00:17.The mother of Claudia Lawrence says the latest developments

:00:18. > :00:21.She's spoken out as more forensic tests are carried

:00:22. > :00:35.And step back in time at an 800`year`old castle.

:00:36. > :00:40.What a beautiful site on the North Yorkshire coast line this morning. A

:00:41. > :00:43.lot of blue skies to come in next couple of days. Join me for that

:00:44. > :00:50.detailed forecast. Tonight, the major police operation

:00:51. > :00:53.to stop terrorists, drug smugglers and people traffickers entering

:00:54. > :00:55.the UK through Yorkshire's coastal It's called Operation Kraken

:00:56. > :01:01.and involves special branch officers working with the

:01:02. > :01:04.Royal Navy, coastguards, 40 miles of Yorkshire coastline are

:01:05. > :01:09.policed, and on average 25 suspicious incidents

:01:10. > :01:15.a month are being investigated. Latest figures show

:01:16. > :01:19.in 2013 there was a 47% increase in the number of potential victims

:01:20. > :01:23.being trafficked into the UK, The UK Border Force says drug

:01:24. > :01:30.seizures were up by 50% Ian White's been talking to officers

:01:31. > :01:44.involved in the operation. Another lovely day by this is eight.

:01:45. > :01:47.Yorkshire's beautiful coastal towns and villages are magnet for

:01:48. > :01:53.thousands of ports and visitors but not all are welcome here. When you

:01:54. > :01:56.come to Whitby, you probably do not think about terrorists and drug

:01:57. > :02:01.smugglers. But the police says the North Yorkshire coast is vulnerable.

:02:02. > :02:05.I joined and insurer visionaries `` I joined and ensure should his

:02:06. > :02:11.patrol and spoke to the special Branch officer running the

:02:12. > :02:15.operation. We cannot identify him. We are protecting the borders of the

:02:16. > :02:20.UK. It is counter`terrorism to consider, serious organised crime,

:02:21. > :02:27.the threat from international crime, whether drug smuggling argument

:02:28. > :02:31.trafficking. Organised gangster not want to use ports like these to

:02:32. > :02:36.enter the UK. Instead they look for an easier option. But now people

:02:37. > :02:40.working on the Yorkshire coast are being more vigilant and looking for

:02:41. > :02:44.anything out of the ordinary. Suspicious people, boats that have

:02:45. > :02:50.had a name change. Leaving Apple at times you would not suspect.

:02:51. > :02:53.Sometimes you would normally think there is less people that should be

:02:54. > :03:00.on the board and there is more. That sort of thing. We have had one

:03:01. > :03:05.incident here will earn in `` within individual was arrested. That was

:03:06. > :03:08.information from the community about suspicious circumstances and he was

:03:09. > :03:17.arrested with five kilos of O'Kane. That led to ?80,000 in cash. `` five

:03:18. > :03:21.kilos of cocaine. Police and the authorities were on the streets of

:03:22. > :03:26.Whitby today to tell people what to look out for. You do tend to notice

:03:27. > :03:34.things that can be out of the ordinary seem a little bit strange.

:03:35. > :03:39.Have seen yachts that look a bit suspicious and maybe some of these

:03:40. > :03:44.cargo boats that have stopped really should not be. You wonder what

:03:45. > :03:48.they're up to. With major shipping lanes just 12 miles off the

:03:49. > :03:51.Yorkshire coast, these patrols can call on the coastguard and Royal

:03:52. > :03:53.Navy for back`up in a major incident, determined to keep

:03:54. > :03:55.criminals away from our shores. The mother of Claudia Lawrence has

:03:56. > :03:58.spoken of her emotional turmoil following developments in

:03:59. > :04:14.the case of her missing daughter. The 59 annual man who was arrested

:04:15. > :04:18.on Tuesday has been released on police bail. Searches have continued

:04:19. > :04:21.today. The house in York and remains the

:04:22. > :04:26.focus of police activity and searches today. That is three days

:04:27. > :04:31.after the arrest of a 59`year`old man on suspicion of murder. He has

:04:32. > :04:37.been released on bail as enquiries continue. The house is half a mile

:04:38. > :04:44.from Claudia Lawrence's home. The 35 adult chef disappeared without trace

:04:45. > :04:47.in March 2009. `` 35`year`old chef. A family has campaigned for the last

:04:48. > :04:50.five years to keep Claudia's disappearance and the public eye and

:04:51. > :04:56.hopeful breakthrough in a case that seems to have stalled. This morning,

:04:57. > :05:02.her mother said it had taken an emotional toll. This has been the

:05:03. > :05:07.first arrest in five years. This has come totally out of the blue. I had

:05:08. > :05:14.absolutely no warning, not even an inkling that this was going to

:05:15. > :05:20.happen. It was shell shock on Tuesday morning when the police

:05:21. > :05:24.worked in and informed me quite early in the morning that this was

:05:25. > :05:30.going to take place. Granted, they did informally before it went out in

:05:31. > :05:35.the media. `` they did inform me. I could not believe it. While the

:05:36. > :05:39.arrest might feel like a breakthrough, it is worth stressing

:05:40. > :05:44.no`one has been charged Mrs Lawrence is wary of people jumping to

:05:45. > :05:50.conclusions. I need to set and think about it. Same my prayers and get

:05:51. > :06:00.through the days. At the bottom of all this, I am concerned about this

:06:01. > :06:07.person, because this person might be totally innocent and I am concerned,

:06:08. > :06:13.both my daughter and I, that all this publicity, what harm it could

:06:14. > :06:16.do to another family. North Yorkshire Police said Father

:06:17. > :06:17.arrests could be made as the enquiries progress. `` further

:06:18. > :06:20.arrests. The card that makes travel

:06:21. > :06:24.quicker and easier. That?s what passengers in

:06:25. > :06:26.West Yorkshire are promised with the launch of the MCard `

:06:27. > :06:31.we see how it works. The Bradford Council

:06:32. > :06:34.of Mosques says it's been assured of increased protection for its members

:06:35. > :06:37.after a far`right political group walked into a mosque in Bradford to

:06:38. > :06:42.spread its Christian message. The group Britain First made

:06:43. > :06:45.its own video of their entry into The activists left a Bible

:06:46. > :06:50.and walked into the main hall They found the Imam

:06:51. > :07:15.and asked him to reject his own Jesus Christ our Lord. We want to

:07:16. > :07:16.save you from Hull. Reject this false Prophet Mohammed and read the

:07:17. > :07:23.Bible. Well, the secretary of the Council

:07:24. > :07:26.for Mosques, Zulfi Karim, met the Secretary of State for Communities

:07:27. > :07:32.in Westminster this morning. You told Eric Pickles that your

:07:33. > :07:37.privacy was invaded. That is strong stuff, isn't it? It is. Most people

:07:38. > :07:42.that have come across a video feel the same. We do not mind people

:07:43. > :07:46.coming and visiting our place of worship. It is a public lace Sandy

:07:47. > :07:52.are welcome. But we feel this is a real invasion of privacy and they

:07:53. > :07:55.have overstepped the mark. If anyone knows a situation in Bradford it has

:07:56. > :08:01.got to be Eric Pickles. I am sure he said the right things, but you need

:08:02. > :08:06.action, not words. Eric has assured us that he will be speaking to the

:08:07. > :08:14.Home Secretary Theresa May on the situation. And he will also be

:08:15. > :08:18.advising the police that if they do attempt to come to Bradford, what

:08:19. > :08:26.measures can and should be taken by the police. Now, how are you feeling

:08:27. > :08:33.ahead of Friday prayers? A very sensitive time. It is. A lot of

:08:34. > :08:35.people still finding out about the incident and tomorrow will be the

:08:36. > :08:39.first gathering of a lot of people within the Moscow will find what

:08:40. > :08:48.happened. I am sure questions will be asked. `` within the mosque. What

:08:49. > :08:50.we're asking for people to do is stay calm.

:08:51. > :08:55.Police investigating the death of a 14`year`old girl in a hit and run

:08:56. > :08:59.Jasmyn Chan died at the scene, and today detectives have arrested

:09:00. > :09:03.a 32`year old man on suspicion of dangerous driving.

:09:04. > :09:07.The arrest follows an emotional appeal for help by Jasmyn's family.

:09:08. > :09:12.Police now say they're keen to find a greeney blue Honda Civic car with

:09:13. > :09:23.The University and College Union says two West Yorkshire universities

:09:24. > :09:26.have unlawfully deducted staff a day's pay following strike action

:09:27. > :09:30.It says Leeds College of Art and the University of Bradford

:09:31. > :09:33.withheld pay for a full day despite the strike only lasting two hours.

:09:34. > :09:37.Leeds College of Art says the union was using cynical tactics and staff

:09:38. > :09:41.were advised in advance that a full day's pay would be lost.

:09:42. > :09:56.Several of Yorkshire's musicians have made it onto this years

:09:57. > :09:59.Sheffield University is the best place in the country to

:10:00. > :10:02.study for a degree, according to a poll of 14,000 students.

:10:03. > :10:05.The Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey puts Sheffield top

:10:06. > :10:08.of the table, based on measures like quality of staff, lectures,

:10:09. > :10:12.Several of Yorkshire's musicians have made it onto this years

:10:13. > :10:15.One Direction?s Zayn Malik from Bradford and Louis Tomlinson

:10:16. > :10:17.from Doncaster are each worth ?14 million,

:10:18. > :10:20.with the boy band officially the richest in British history.

:10:21. > :10:22.Elsewhere in the list of the wealthiest young bands is

:10:23. > :10:40.Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys, with a combined fortune of ?30 million.

:10:41. > :10:43.Now if you've travelled on public transport in London you'll probably

:10:44. > :10:47.A smart ticket that allows you to jump between busses,

:10:48. > :10:51.Well West Yorkshire has been working on its own version called the MCard

:10:52. > :10:55.and today our business correspondent Danni Hewson has been trying it out.

:10:56. > :10:59.It has been a long time in the planning, but West Yorkshire Police

:11:00. > :11:01.Mike MCard can now be used in anger. These cards will allow you to travel

:11:02. > :11:05.seamlessly across West Yorkshire from bus to train and back again.

:11:06. > :11:08.Not everywhere this fully equipped, so at the moment you also need a

:11:09. > :11:16.counterpart. It is hoped the next stage will see trains carrying card

:11:17. > :11:20.readers and works island place to bring card readers into a number of

:11:21. > :11:24.stations. I do not want people to think we have the system in that is

:11:25. > :11:28.it. We have transferred a lot of the existing tickets to smart cards and

:11:29. > :11:33.the next step is to make sure that every single buses kitted out with

:11:34. > :11:42.smart ticket machines and to bring the real network into it as well.

:11:43. > :11:45.?40 million and `` ?13 million as the cost and the hope is more money

:11:46. > :11:51.will be recouped by people using the services. It is about making it

:11:52. > :11:55.easier to purchase as well. You do not have to have cash in your

:11:56. > :11:57.pocket. There is an increased network of pay zone and retail

:11:58. > :12:04.outlets where you can purchase a ticket. Simplicity is the key thing

:12:05. > :12:08.here. How does it work? Well, like London, the county has been split

:12:09. > :12:15.into zones. With no tube stations, this scheme relies on, shops to sell

:12:16. > :12:21.tickets. Can I get a zone one and two MCard? A number of stores of

:12:22. > :12:27.equipped and the card can be used by more than one person, although not

:12:28. > :12:30.on the same journey. It is surprisingly easy, but the jury is

:12:31. > :12:34.out on whether it will get more people out of their cars. So much

:12:35. > :12:39.easier. I definitely will be using mine in future. Do not jump between

:12:40. > :12:45.trains and tubes in London. It is very dangerous.

:12:46. > :12:47.It's just one week to the Local Council elections. This

:12:48. > :12:51.year they are being held on the same day we vote for our European MPs.

:12:52. > :12:55.All the big councils across South and West Yorkshire go to the polls,

:12:56. > :13:00.Our Political Editor Len Tingle has been taking a look and he starts

:13:01. > :13:06.It would not be too far off the mark to suggest that when it comes to the

:13:07. > :13:08.local elections, Labour has been a bit like a pool in a china shop.

:13:09. > :13:11.They have barged aside the Liberal Democrats and Tories in most of the

:13:12. > :13:15.councils will be up for election. A look at the electoral map shows what

:13:16. > :13:18.has been happening. These are the four local authorities in South

:13:19. > :13:23.Yorkshire. Barnes, Doncaster, Sheffield and bothered. The Labour

:13:24. > :13:27.Party has squeezed the Liberal Democrats and conservative so much

:13:28. > :13:30.that those parties hardly have little hold of any form of power

:13:31. > :13:35.right away across this part of the region. In West Yorkshire, there has

:13:36. > :13:40.been a similar movement. Labour is in full control in Wakefield and

:13:41. > :13:43.Leeds. The competition will be in the remaining three councils. Labour

:13:44. > :13:54.goes into Bradford just two seats short of a majority. In our areas

:13:55. > :14:00.they are only five short. The other parties are trying hard to stop them

:14:01. > :14:03.crossing the line. We're getting close and anticipating making some

:14:04. > :14:08.games. It is challenging to get an overall majority but that is the

:14:09. > :14:11.ambition. We know the pressures on people's budgets and in particular

:14:12. > :14:18.we understand the need to get people into work, particularly to help

:14:19. > :14:22.young people get into work. They will not gain overall control this

:14:23. > :14:26.time. Calderdale has been a hung council since 2002 and that will not

:14:27. > :14:32.change. They will be a move around in seats across the parties. We

:14:33. > :14:39.certainly hope to gain some seats, but we would gain `` but it is

:14:40. > :14:47.unlikely we will take control in the area. I believe it is common in the

:14:48. > :14:53.wars that we are fighting strongly and banal we represent them well and

:14:54. > :14:58.work hard for them and they want us to continue to do that. I am

:14:59. > :15:03.reasonably optimistic. `` we're fighting strongly for them and we

:15:04. > :15:08.represent them well. Minor parties are putting up more candidates than

:15:09. > :15:13.ever before. UKIP won its first ever seat at Rotherham at a by`election

:15:14. > :15:17.last year. This time, it is put up 148 candidates across the region.

:15:18. > :15:22.The Greens in those councils up for election this time around have nine

:15:23. > :15:27.councillors. They are fielding 110 candidates. From the left, the trade

:15:28. > :15:32.union organisation Task is fielding 21 candidates. With less than a week

:15:33. > :15:44.to go, the campaign is likely to warm up. `` TUSK. You can see more

:15:45. > :15:46.information on the BBC website. Before seven o'clock,

:15:47. > :15:49.Rotherham Titans and Leeds Carnegie square up in the studio

:15:50. > :15:52.and Conisbrough Castle reopens its Hamleton trained The Grey Gatsby

:15:53. > :16:07.won the big race at York today. Kevin Ryan's horse caused a minor

:16:08. > :16:11.upset, to win the Dante Stakes, beating Arod and the favourite,

:16:12. > :16:13.True Story, in a great finish. The race is seen as a Derby trial,

:16:14. > :16:17.but Ryan said afterwards he's likely to run in the French

:16:18. > :16:22.equivalent instead. Leeds United have appointed Benito

:16:23. > :16:25.Carbone as a consultant at the club. The 42 year old former Sheffield

:16:26. > :16:28.Wednesday and Bradford midfielder will advise the new board,

:16:29. > :16:32.including owner, Massimo Cellino, Well, there's no turning back

:16:33. > :16:38.for Rotherham United. Their terrific season has taken them

:16:39. > :16:42.into the League One play`offs. And if they beat Preston tonight,

:16:43. > :16:46.in the second leg of their semi final, Rotherham will be playing at

:16:47. > :16:50.Wembley a week on Sunday for a place Their manager believes

:16:51. > :17:09.a sell`out home crowd tonight can They have come in huge numbers and

:17:10. > :17:12.we have increased attendances. They will be a tomorrow night and I can

:17:13. > :17:15.assure people from late afternoon the atmosphere around the stadium

:17:16. > :17:20.will be absolutely electric. We need to endorse that and embrace it and

:17:21. > :17:26.give them a night to remember for all the right reasons. Let's go live

:17:27. > :17:30.to Rotherham for some of that build`up. Our reporter has got

:17:31. > :17:38.himself one of those tickets. Lucky boy! I am and I feel lucky being

:17:39. > :17:41.here. It is funny how our teams locally whether it is Bradford City

:17:42. > :17:45.only generated on the Sheffield teams have always had times when the

:17:46. > :17:51.star was high. This is Rotherham's time. No doubt about that. I need

:17:52. > :17:54.you to hear about the man who has engineered this from the boardroom.

:17:55. > :17:58.The chairman of Rotherham United. What is at stake here if you get

:17:59. > :18:05.promoted to the Championship? What will happen in the boardroom and for

:18:06. > :18:10.revenue streams? It is in the region of about ?4 million extra. It is

:18:11. > :18:14.another step that Rotherham United are taking from league to two League

:18:15. > :18:18.One and it will be fantastic to play the higher clubs in the

:18:19. > :18:22.Championship. And this stadium, which have been in for two seasons,

:18:23. > :18:28.it holds 12,000. If you played Sheffield Wednesday, which United

:18:29. > :18:33.and others, you would fill the stadium every weekend, wouldn't you?

:18:34. > :18:38.Yes, we would. We would need to look at that and it would be nice to

:18:39. > :18:41.force to expand it to accommodate bigger clubs. You have experienced

:18:42. > :18:48.failure at Wembley against Dagenham. Can the club learn from that? I

:18:49. > :18:53.think the club can. That was early in my tenure. Six years on, we know

:18:54. > :18:56.what we're about and we have a good manager and a good Board of

:18:57. > :19:02.Directors. I think we are ready to climb up the ladder. Rotherham is

:19:03. > :19:07.definitely ready as a town. It is a sell`out against Preston tonight. It

:19:08. > :19:12.stands at 1`1 after the first leg into ever wins, it could take extra

:19:13. > :19:14.time or penalties defeats Leyton Orient for a place in the

:19:15. > :19:17.Championship at Wembley. Well it's also playoff time in

:19:18. > :19:19.Rugby Union with both Rotherham Titans and Leeds Carnegie

:19:20. > :19:22.in action in the second leg The Titans trail

:19:23. > :19:26.by just 3 points going into the home leg of their match

:19:27. > :19:29.against Bristol, losing out 17`14. Carnegie have a narrow lead

:19:30. > :19:32.after beating London Welsh 38`31 Joining us now from Rotherham,

:19:33. > :19:43.Charlie Mulchrone, There is a real buzz about

:19:44. > :19:48.Rotherham, isn't there? Yes, it is a nice feeling to have two teams in a

:19:49. > :19:53.promotion chase. It is a great feeling. In our camp at the moment,

:19:54. > :19:59.I great feeling it this week. How disappointed I need to not be

:20:00. > :20:03.playing at Clifton Lane? It is a weird feeling. Clifton Lane has been

:20:04. > :20:08.our spiritual home. Sheffield have been accommodating in taking us in.

:20:09. > :20:11.Our fans, the way they travel, it will seem like old when we place

:20:12. > :20:17.orders not to much of an issue. What about your chances, Rob? You want

:20:18. > :20:23.the big crowd, that is the main thing. I am not sure it will be such

:20:24. > :20:29.a bad atmosphere that the Kassam Stadium. Hopefully there will be a

:20:30. > :20:32.good contingent travelling down. The crowd at the 16th man and would be

:20:33. > :20:36.good to get some Yorkshire people there. What is the incentive for you

:20:37. > :20:40.both to win? We know what will happen next, and all Yorkshire final

:20:41. > :20:47.home and away. It would be incredible. It would. It would be

:20:48. > :20:53.great to see that. It would be great for us as a team and for brother as

:20:54. > :20:56.well. It would be a good game. Yorkshire derby would be fantastic.

:20:57. > :21:00.I played Leeds four times and lost before, so it would nice to get one

:21:01. > :21:06.over on them. I am not looking past the Saturday but it would be nice.

:21:07. > :21:12.You are sat there, nice and polite, but if you win this week, you could

:21:13. > :21:18.be going We could, we could be beating each other up in a few

:21:19. > :21:23.weeks! This would be huge of. We have a massive game against London

:21:24. > :21:29.Welsh. The following Friday, a cup final against Dublin. We are looking

:21:30. > :21:34.for the field and want to be in the Premiership. It would be a great
