:00:00. > :00:09.Good evening and welcome to Look One it's time for the news

:00:10. > :00:13.Good evening and welcome to Look North. First tonight, a rally's

:00:14. > :00:16.taken place over planned housing developments in a West Yorkshire

:00:17. > :00:19.town. One of the applications is to build 34 new houses. Campaigners say

:00:20. > :00:25.they're literally in their backyard and they're ready for a fight.

:00:26. > :00:29.Shirley Henry reports. What do we want? Green fields. When do we want

:00:30. > :00:34.them? Now. Hundreds of Mirfield residents took

:00:35. > :00:37.to the streets this lunchtime. They're campaigning against plans to

:00:38. > :00:41.build more than 300 homes. They say one of the plans could see homes

:00:42. > :00:42.being built literally in their back yard.

:00:43. > :00:50.These properties will be looking directly into our conservatory, our

:00:51. > :00:53.bedroom and our living room. The plan itself is incomplete, it's

:00:54. > :01:02.obscure, it's inaccurate and more important it's not compliant with

:01:03. > :01:06.the council's very own policy, BE12. Developers plan to build 34 new

:01:07. > :01:10.houses on meadow land at Kitson Hill. On the BE12 policy, 21 metres,

:01:11. > :01:17.that's about two double`decker buses is the minimum acceptable distance

:01:18. > :01:23.between houses. But the plan shows this house will be less than three

:01:24. > :01:41.metres away from two new garages. In a statement, the council said:

:01:42. > :01:48.The need to build houses in Kirklees supersedes compliance with their

:01:49. > :01:54.very own policies. We believe that is a very dangerous

:01:55. > :01:56.precedent. What do we want? Green fields.

:01:57. > :01:59.Kirklees Council has referred the application to senior officers.

:02:00. > :02:03.A politics expert has told the BBC that cuts in local council spending

:02:04. > :02:06.have led to a reduction in the number and the quality of candidates

:02:07. > :02:14.for the council elections being held on Thursday. Alan McGauley also told

:02:15. > :02:17.the Sunday Politics programme for Yorkshire and Lincolnshire that

:02:18. > :02:21.local government as we know it is finished.

:02:22. > :02:26.The challenges are immense for politicians. What we've seen also is

:02:27. > :02:29.very few people want to take up that challenge. Not every seat in South

:02:30. > :02:34.Yorkshire's being contested now which is almost unheard of in recent

:02:35. > :02:37.times. Why would people want to take a seat on a council to then be

:02:38. > :02:40.responsible for butchering council services on behalf of central

:02:41. > :02:43.government? Local government as we know it is probably finished. We're

:02:44. > :02:48.going to see outsourcing through companies. We're going to also see a

:02:49. > :02:49.role for the third sector, the voluntary sector.

:02:50. > :02:53.Police are growing increasingly concerned for a man who has been

:02:54. > :02:57.missing from his home in York for two days. Mandeep Ahluwalia, who is

:02:58. > :03:00.41, disappeared from his house in Heworth on Friday. Officers say they

:03:01. > :03:06.are particularly concerned because he left without cash or bank cards.

:03:07. > :03:09.On to sport. It's not been a good weekend for our rugby union teams.

:03:10. > :03:12.Last night, Rotherham Titans threw away an eight point lead as they

:03:13. > :03:16.lost their Championship play`off semi final. Today, Leeds Carnegie

:03:17. > :03:21.were in action in their own semi final second leg. And it was bad

:03:22. > :03:24.news for Leeds as well I'm afraid. They had a seven point lead from the

:03:25. > :03:28.first leg. This try from Charlie Beech put them ahead this afternoon

:03:29. > :03:33.but two late tries for London Welsh meant Leeds went down by 60`58 on

:03:34. > :03:37.aggregate. And it's been a big weekend in Super

:03:38. > :03:40.League. All the teams decamped to Manchester City's Etihad Stadium for

:03:41. > :03:44.what's known as the Magic Weekend. Well, Leeds lost to Wigan last night

:03:45. > :03:49.but stay top after St Helen's lost this afternoon. Castleford are still

:03:50. > :03:54.in fourth. They thrashed West Yorkshire rivals Wakefield Wildcats

:03:55. > :03:58.50`12. Daryl Clark opened and closed the scoring for the Tigers, who had

:03:59. > :04:02.a stunning first half going in ahead 22`0. And in the other West

:04:03. > :04:08.Yorkshire derby Bradford were beaten 54`16. The Bulls remain second from

:04:09. > :04:11.bottom. An ancient Hare Krishna festival has

:04:12. > :04:14.taken place in Sheffield this afternoon. The Rathayatra, otherwise

:04:15. > :04:17.known as the chariot festival, began with a procession from the Moor and

:04:18. > :04:20.finished with a carnival in Broomhall. The festival originated

:04:21. > :04:26.in India and dates back over 2,000 years. It's the first time it's been

:04:27. > :04:30.held in Sheffield. Today is a celebration of the lord's

:04:31. > :04:34.appearance in this world. In this day and age, temple worship or

:04:35. > :04:37.church worship is becoming less and less popular. As you'll see from the

:04:38. > :04:41.structure of this beautiful chariot, it's like a temple on wheels with

:04:42. > :04:46.the deity of the lord, he comes out on this chariot. So when people

:04:47. > :04:56.don't any longer come to see him, he comes out to see everyone.

:04:57. > :05:00.You have had a glorious weather this afternoon. Then some dying hours of

:05:01. > :05:05.sunshine to enjoy that then there is changes on the way.

:05:06. > :05:12.It has been glorious today. Parts of Yorkshire reached 24 degrees. This

:05:13. > :05:16.evening, it is they mostly dry. There will be plenty of clear skies

:05:17. > :05:21.and some cloud around but it'll be a mild night. Temperatures falling

:05:22. > :05:25.back to around 12 Celsius. The winds are light as his Monday morning.

:05:26. > :05:29.Some cloud around, bright spells further north but as you go through

:05:30. > :05:33.the day we will see one or two showers developing over the tops of

:05:34. > :05:39.the Pennines. Most of staying temperatures getting to highs of

:05:40. > :05:43.around 22 Celsius. As a get into Tuesday, things become more

:05:44. > :05:47.unsettled. A dry morning the two will see show was by Tuesday

:05:48. > :05:52.afternoon. Still warm but turning cooler as we head into Wednesday. We

:05:53. > :05:59.will be on a little bit later this evening, about 10:20pm. We're

:06:00. > :06:09.following the BAFTAs. From the late team, by.

:06:10. > :06:16.St James Park and Sheffield both hit 25 Celsius this afternoon. That

:06:17. > :06:20.gives us our warmest day in nearly nine months, since 5th September

:06:21. > :06:24.2013. It goes without saying that it is going to be a warm night. Look

:06:25. > :06:28.out for some showers clipping into eastern Scotland. Some of those

:06:29. > :06:32.could be heavy. Still some patchy rain for western Scotland. More

:06:33. > :06:34.persistent rain returning to Northern Ireland by the end
