:00:29. > :00:37.their most intensive weekend train service ever.

:00:38. > :00:44.How we got on at the Chelsea shower `` Chelsea Flower Show. Join me for

:00:45. > :00:53.the latest on the weather. Good evening and welcome

:00:54. > :00:57.to Tuesday's Look North. The career of one of

:00:58. > :00:59.West Yorkshire Police's most senior officers is said to be hanging

:01:00. > :01:03.in the balance after he was stopped for drink`driving

:01:04. > :01:05.on the day his officers were investigating the murder of the

:01:06. > :01:08.Leeds school teacher, Ann Maguire. Detective Chief Superintendent David

:01:09. > :01:10.Knopwood admitted failing to provide His bosses say disciplinary

:01:11. > :01:16.hearings will follow quickly. Our crime correspondent John Cundy

:01:17. > :01:32.reports. Highly regarded detective David

:01:33. > :01:35.Knopwood, he was chosen to head all criminal investigations and the West

:01:36. > :01:40.of Yorkshire including that of Jimmy Savile. He is now facing a

:01:41. > :01:44.catastrophe because he failed to provide a breath specimen after

:01:45. > :01:51.being caught drink`driving. It happened on the day school Ann

:01:52. > :01:57.Maguire was murdered in Leeds. He headed up a major investigation. The

:01:58. > :02:02.court heard that he did not need, he was so busy. He stopped at a pub to

:02:03. > :02:06.unwind from the stress and from probably having taken too much to

:02:07. > :02:12.drink. He was stopped by North Yorkshire Police officers or driving

:02:13. > :02:18.very slowly here in stock well`being less than half e`mail away from his

:02:19. > :02:23.home. He said he had drank two pints of alcohol to unwind at a local pub.

:02:24. > :02:28.His breath test showed he was nearly two times above the legal limit. His

:02:29. > :02:34.lawyer said that he now faces catastrophe because of his loss of

:02:35. > :02:36.judgement. In a statement, Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Brennan,

:02:37. > :02:51.head of standards said... Following the hearing today, they

:02:52. > :02:56.said they will move to conclude the disciplinary process. David

:02:57. > :03:02.Knopwood, banned for driving for one year and find ?1000 but more

:03:03. > :03:03.concerned with him tonight will be his future and the police force

:03:04. > :03:10.after having served 24 years. Yorkshire's rail companies have

:03:11. > :03:13.announced they'll operate their most intensive weekend train

:03:14. > :03:16.service ever when the Tour de France They're gearing up for unprecedented

:03:17. > :03:20.numbers of passengers using trains The route along the two Yorkshire

:03:21. > :03:37.stages of the Tour de France is 240 Most towns and villages on the route

:03:38. > :03:41.will see more regular trains. There'll be an intensive express

:03:42. > :03:44.service between Leeds and Harrogate. There'll be extra carriages brought

:03:45. > :03:47.into Yorkshire from elsewhere to ease overcrowding, but

:03:48. > :03:49.the rail companies are asking people They want you to buy tickets

:03:50. > :03:53.in advance. And once you get to

:03:54. > :03:55.your destination, it's suggested With more details,

:03:56. > :04:06.here's Spencer Stokes. They are trying to drive home the

:04:07. > :04:09.message that the first weekend in July will be busy on the roads of

:04:10. > :04:15.Yorkshire. This event is unprecedented. We were expecting

:04:16. > :04:18.more passengers. Thousands more to come to Yorkshire. We want everyone

:04:19. > :04:25.to have a great experience and enjoy the weekend. Planning ahead is key.

:04:26. > :04:29.The operators have been planning ahead for months with 2 million

:04:30. > :04:34.people expected to line the route of the tour. Everywhere we went and

:04:35. > :04:40.Yorkshire will see an ad service `` every railway line will see. It

:04:41. > :04:45.makes for a complicated mixture, particularly where this location

:04:46. > :04:51.will be central to it. On Sunday the sex of the line the railway line

:04:52. > :04:54.will be closed which means that you want to get from York to Harrogate

:04:55. > :05:00.on this section of the track you will not be able to do so. Whether

:05:01. > :05:06.it be overcrowded? Extra carriages are being hired them. The real

:05:07. > :05:15.companies do not want any additional space filled with bicycles. We have

:05:16. > :05:18.our own sickle policy of two bicycle spare train. Recognise that your

:05:19. > :05:24.bikes will take up space and these will be incredibly busy trains. What

:05:25. > :05:30.happens at a family of four wants to get on with bikes or on a train?

:05:31. > :05:34.They may not be able to travel at the tapes are that popular. Some

:05:35. > :05:40.passengers were surprised by these restrictions. And you can take your

:05:41. > :05:45.bikes onto the trains. I am very disappointed. There is a lack of

:05:46. > :05:52.provision to put your bikes up on the trains. Train companies get

:05:53. > :05:55.people regularly to big events but Yorkshire has not seen an event of

:05:56. > :06:00.this size for something. But road closures and an influx of people

:06:01. > :06:07.from elsewhere, the real network is bracing itself for quite a weekend.

:06:08. > :06:13.Well, joining us now is our Tour de France correspondent Matt Slater,

:06:14. > :06:16.who has been to many Tour de Frances in the past.

:06:17. > :06:19.Matt, it seems strange that this is a major cycling event

:06:20. > :06:24.but the rail companies don't want bikes on trains, why is that?

:06:25. > :06:30.Bex take up space and passengers are the priority. They are trying to

:06:31. > :06:36.make an exception for this Tour de France. It will not wash with many

:06:37. > :06:40.people. As we have seen from these pictures, when the Tour de France

:06:41. > :06:43.last game to England and visited London and Kent, there were huge

:06:44. > :06:47.crowds and many people want to come to Yorkshire this year with their

:06:48. > :06:54.bikes so that they can ride the roots. There will be some

:06:55. > :07:01.disappointment. So how does it work in France? It is slightly

:07:02. > :07:05.misleading, France is a huge country with a well integrated transport

:07:06. > :07:10.system, only one train company to worry about and they have a century

:07:11. > :07:13.of dealing with this race. Something else to mention is that the Tour de

:07:14. > :07:18.France travels around France, people do not travel from as far as field

:07:19. > :07:23.and they know that if they mess it one year they will get it next year.

:07:24. > :07:27.We are not that blessed on that front, so there will be a real

:07:28. > :07:33.novelty factor, real challenges for Yorkshire. Having done the route

:07:34. > :07:37.myself, I know that you can get stuck on many parts of that route

:07:38. > :07:43.which may cause problems. That is a key part of today's advice. Picked a

:07:44. > :07:49.spot and plan ahead, you will not be moving around much.

:07:50. > :07:53.And there's lots more about the Tour de France on your local BBC website,

:07:54. > :07:55.including a daily ?Tour Diary? from Matt.

:07:56. > :08:08.and scroll down, and click on the Tour de France link.

:08:09. > :08:12.What is holding some girls back from getting involved in sport? We will

:08:13. > :08:18.find out later. There is a large police presence

:08:19. > :08:22.in the Page Hall area of Sheffield this evening, following

:08:23. > :08:24.a disturbance last night involving It follows concerns raised last year

:08:25. > :08:28.by the former Home Secretary, David Blunkett,

:08:29. > :08:30.who warned of an "explosion" in the area unless action was taken

:08:31. > :08:33.to integrate Roma migrants. Kate Bradbrook has spent

:08:34. > :08:42.the afternoon in Page Hall. This area of Sheffield is home to

:08:43. > :08:48.many different cultures, races and traditions. Overall people live here

:08:49. > :08:53.in peace but last night the police were called to a disturbance behind

:08:54. > :08:59.me on this street which involved two groups of more than 25 people and

:09:00. > :09:03.dozens more bystanders. The result was a 17`year`old suffering a broken

:09:04. > :09:08.arm. I spoke to one man who saw the event happen. As I have gone down

:09:09. > :09:14.the street I can hear shouting and screaming. The police are closing of

:09:15. > :09:19.roads. I saw this young man with his arm and it looked broken. I ask

:09:20. > :09:24.someone what had happened and they said he had got beaten up. No

:09:25. > :09:28.arrests were made but police issued a dispersal order to allow them to

:09:29. > :09:34.stop crowd gathering and to search people. Some people we have spoken

:09:35. > :09:39.to blame racial tensions but others say it was no more than a fight

:09:40. > :09:43.between teenagers. It was one young person against another young person

:09:44. > :09:48.and they have started fighting at a local youth club, ran off and got

:09:49. > :09:53.their friends and unfortunately it has unfolded upon the streets of

:09:54. > :09:58.Page Hall. The fog just behind the centre and things got out of hand

:09:59. > :10:04.with young people fighting. It is a very densely populated area and so

:10:05. > :10:07.families and friends who saw these huge groups of people running

:10:08. > :10:13.through the streets have come out to see what has gone on. It looked like

:10:14. > :10:16.a mass brawl but probably it was about six people fighting with

:10:17. > :10:20.hundreds of onlookers. It is quite this evening but there is still a

:10:21. > :10:35.visible police presence to ensure things remain like that.

:10:36. > :10:37.In other news now, two men have absconded

:10:38. > :10:40.39`year`old Damien Burns from Scarborough and Dean Jackson,

:10:41. > :10:43.who's 27 and from Newcastle, disappeared from HMP Standford

:10:44. > :10:45.Hill, formerly Moorland Open Prison, yesterday evening.

:10:46. > :10:47.Burns was serving a sentence for a knife`point robbery

:10:48. > :10:50.and Jackson was on remand awaiting a sentence for theft.

:10:51. > :10:53.Detectives are asking anyone who sees the men not to approach

:10:54. > :10:58.A man remains under police guard in hospital after a woman died

:10:59. > :11:00.and four children were injured in a house in Huddersfield.

:11:01. > :11:03.37`year`old Emma Siswick was found with stab injuries on Sunday night.

:11:04. > :11:06.A nine`year`old boy and 11`year`old boy were also stabbed, but their

:11:07. > :11:09.Two other children had minor injuries.

:11:10. > :11:12.The Hillsborough inquests have been told that Liverpool fans had

:11:13. > :11:15.the use of 23 turnstiles compared to 60 for opposition fans on the day

:11:16. > :11:19.The details emerged as the jury were told "uncontroversial facts"

:11:20. > :11:23.about the crushing which killed 96 Liverpool football fans in 1989.

:11:24. > :11:27.The inquest was also shown maps and photos of the Hillsborough

:11:28. > :11:32.More than 3,000 people have signed a petition calling

:11:33. > :11:35.for improved road safety following the death of a teenager in

:11:36. > :11:41.Jasmyn Chan died when she was struck by a vehicle at Normanton

:11:42. > :11:46.A 32`year`old man arrested in connection with her death has

:11:47. > :11:49.Campaigners hope to get 5,000 signatures to force

:11:50. > :12:00.There are just two days to go to the local council elections and some

:12:01. > :12:03.of the minor parties are fielding more candidates across West and

:12:04. > :12:32.Out political editor Len Tingle has been assessing their chances.

:12:33. > :12:36.Within one year all of these councillors had left the party after

:12:37. > :12:42.a big row with its leader George Galloway. This year, the Respect

:12:43. > :12:45.party has ten new candidates but does not have any help at all with

:12:46. > :12:51.those elected in its name last time around. The look of this make up of

:12:52. > :12:56.this 96 council as we head into the elections shows it is a different

:12:57. > :13:01.main party as it heads into power. Labour has 44 seats, close to a

:13:02. > :13:05.majority, the rest of the seats are taken up by Conservatives, Liberal

:13:06. > :13:15.Democrats and a variety of independents including those former

:13:16. > :13:18.five Respect can `` politicians. Bradford is not the only council

:13:19. > :13:24.where a small number of Green Party politicians propped up a majority.

:13:25. > :13:28.So it is no coincidence the Green Party national leader Natalie

:13:29. > :13:32.Bennett chose Huddersfield for this campaign rally aimed at attracting

:13:33. > :13:38.young voters to the party. Huddersfield as the headquarters of

:13:39. > :13:43.Kirkley's council. Just five wheeled enough power to be given a cabinet

:13:44. > :13:48.post because the biggest party, the Labour Party, needs the five votes

:13:49. > :13:51.to guarantee a majority. What is important is that first

:13:52. > :13:56.breakthrough. Once we know that people like having Green

:13:57. > :14:04.councillors, our numbers tend to grow. With UKIP's eyes on these

:14:05. > :14:10.councils going to the polls on Thursday, Doncaster was chosen as

:14:11. > :14:19.its last big rally. It is fielding 150 candidates in Yorkshire, a

:14:20. > :14:24.record for any minor party. You can get more information online.

:14:25. > :14:46.And bringing back the medals, we hear more from the Chelsea Flower

:14:47. > :14:50.Show. Former Yorkshire and England

:14:51. > :14:52.cricketer Philip Sharpe has died at the age of 77

:14:53. > :14:55.after a short illness in hospital. Sharpe, seen here on the left,

:14:56. > :14:59.played 12 Test matches for England and is regarded as one of the best

:15:00. > :15:03.fielders in the history of the game. He won seven County Championships

:15:04. > :15:06.with Yorkshire in a 20`year career. His passing will be marked

:15:07. > :15:09.on the first day of Yorkshire's match against Lancashire

:15:10. > :15:29.at Headingley on Sunday. How do you get teenage

:15:30. > :15:32.girls to do sport? That's the question posed by the

:15:33. > :15:35.Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation who launched a project in Sheffield

:15:36. > :15:38.today to get young people active. If it's successful here they hope to

:15:39. > :15:42.roll it out across the country and But first they need to understand

:15:43. > :15:50.what's holding girls back. What you like about sport? What is

:15:51. > :15:53.stopping you from doing sport? I used to play a lot of sports when I

:15:54. > :15:58.was younger but starting secondary school and a new environment, it was

:15:59. > :16:06.not as comfortable as when you were younger, I guess. Boys think that

:16:07. > :16:12.girls are not strong enough or that they are stronger than others. They

:16:13. > :16:16.also look at the size that you are. They say that the bigger girls

:16:17. > :16:21.should not take part. Everyone should be able to take part. Yes, I

:16:22. > :16:27.think it has to do with appearance but also how much time that you

:16:28. > :16:31.have. There is not enough time to do it and when you do find time you do

:16:32. > :16:35.not want to go unless your friends are doing it. These were just a few

:16:36. > :16:39.of the reasons that these girls from the school gave as to why they do

:16:40. > :16:45.not do more sport. So how do they change this attitude? We are trying

:16:46. > :16:50.to understand what they want to do. It is all well and good enough is

:16:51. > :16:54.coming up with ideas but we must test out a few different styles of

:16:55. > :17:02.classes, do they want to do dancing? Do they want to do mind, body and

:17:03. > :17:07.yoga? Do they want to do sport. As well as dance there was football and

:17:08. > :17:12.boxing in searching for the key to keeping these girls active. This is

:17:13. > :17:16.the start of something that could be instrumental in how we encourage

:17:17. > :17:19.young girls to remain in sport and keep going because we all know about

:17:20. > :17:24.the health benefits that they will get as a result of doing this. It

:17:25. > :17:29.has shown that it is important for girls to get involved in sport and

:17:30. > :17:35.we are enjoying it. Even if you are not confident within yourself, you

:17:36. > :17:40.can do a sport and have a good time. Do schools need to do different

:17:41. > :17:46.things? Yes, mixing it up makes a difference. Will you continue to

:17:47. > :18:23.take part in sport? Definitely. I will give it a try!

:18:24. > :18:25.Our next guest is the undisputed king of comedy one`liners.

:18:26. > :18:28.George Valentine from Rotherham has spent a lifetime

:18:29. > :18:31.writing short jokes and has turned out gags for some of the nation's

:18:32. > :18:33.most`loved comedians, including Tommy Cooper and Les Dawson.

:18:34. > :18:37.George ` who pens 25 new jokes every morning before breakfast `

:18:38. > :18:40.has nearly a quarter of a million followers on Twitter .

:18:41. > :18:42.And he claims to break all comedy records,

:18:43. > :18:49.We gave him just 30 seconds and to help you, we've counted how

:18:50. > :19:13.George joins us now. We can safely say that you have defended your

:19:14. > :19:16.title, as many jokes and one minute. How did you get into this, you have

:19:17. > :19:22.been writing jokes for decades, have you not? I choose to tell the

:19:23. > :19:32.children at school where did they get their jokes from and I took

:19:33. > :19:39.jokes from them. I've used to jot them down whenever I've heard them.

:19:40. > :19:46.In 1969I wrote to Bob Monkhouse and he said that my first joke I ever

:19:47. > :19:52.wrote, I sent that to him and he said it was a sexually good and he

:19:53. > :20:03.put me onto the producers Tommy Cooper which I wrote. `` it was very

:20:04. > :20:11.good. You have since become an Internet sensation. It is the

:20:12. > :20:15.delivery that counts. Many famous comedians have never written a joke

:20:16. > :20:24.in their life. What is the secret, is it about the timing? It is

:20:25. > :20:32.obviously, people write jokes to try and make money. Bob Monkhouse used

:20:33. > :20:41.to write jokes for the likes of Bob Hope when he came to this country.

:20:42. > :20:45.So they made their money on tour? That's correct. My favourite

:20:46. > :20:50.one`liner that I have ever written was the one that I wrote Bob

:20:51. > :20:54.Monkhouse and it was about a man who had never seen a vector before. He

:20:55. > :21:04.said why do you wear your collar back to front. He said I do it

:21:05. > :21:10.because I am a father. The vicar said I am the father of thousands.

:21:11. > :21:14.The man says it is your trousers you want to look at! That is a brilliant

:21:15. > :21:36.note to end on! So, it's medals day at the

:21:37. > :21:39.Chelsea Flower Show and Yorkshire garden nurseries and designers are

:21:40. > :21:42.celebrating a bumper crop of awards. Three golds, two silver`gilts,

:21:43. > :21:44.four silvers and a bronze. Clare Frisby got up early to see

:21:45. > :21:54.how our Yorkshire entrants got on. It is the second Sea and the medals

:21:55. > :21:57.are being given out. It was all quiet and someone told me

:21:58. > :22:04.they were enjoying early`morning celebrations. It was all tiers at

:22:05. > :22:10.this nursery which got through to the best initial. I just cried my

:22:11. > :22:17.eyes out, I looked at it and I could not believe it. Christopher was very

:22:18. > :22:23.happy as well. I can now die happy, I have got my first gold medal.

:22:24. > :22:28.Bonsai plants must be very difficult to control and another gold for this

:22:29. > :22:36.nursery from Chesterfield shows that they have reached perfection. This

:22:37. > :22:38.is the pinnacle of gardening. Winning a gold medal at the Chelsea

:22:39. > :22:43.Flower Show is something you must obtain. Perennials and the

:22:44. > :22:49.quintessential country garden captured the judges two and

:22:50. > :22:58.imagination and brought back another gold medal to York. It is very nice

:22:59. > :23:02.to beat the south. Very nice for us. But as the judges delivered their

:23:03. > :23:07.verdicts, Alistair Baldwin, the designer of the Welcome to Yorkshire

:23:08. > :23:12.garden did not seem very happy with his silver award. If all of these

:23:13. > :23:16.plans are leaving you feeling deflated about your borders, here

:23:17. > :23:22.are some top tips from this gardening guru. The inspired and at

:23:23. > :23:28.the shore like the Chelsea Flower Show, take the best and take it home

:23:29. > :23:32.and apply it to your own garden. Try to learn from it, do not try to

:23:33. > :23:38.emulate it, because you will probably fail. Make it your own and

:23:39. > :23:45.enjoyed it. There you have it, Clare Frisby, BBC Look North, the Chelsea

:23:46. > :23:53.Flower Show. Some beautiful flowers there.

:23:54. > :24:00.Beautiful blooms. What did one raindrop say to the

:24:01. > :24:10.other? Oh, I have forgotten the punch line! On his company, to as a

:24:11. > :24:20.cloud! It is all in the delivery. Why was six after eight of seven?

:24:21. > :24:29.Because six 89. Fantastic jokes!

:24:30. > :24:39.Please keep your pictures coming in. You can contact us as follows, look

:24:40. > :24:52.at the addresses on screen now. Some heavy rain for Wednesday night

:24:53. > :24:59.and into Thursday morning. It will be very showery as we head into the
