:00:00. > :00:09.the smallest margins. That is all from us.
:00:10. > :00:16.Good evening. All the votes have been counted and politicians are
:00:17. > :00:18.assessing the impact of the local elections here in Yorkshire. The UK
:00:19. > :00:21.Independence Party has made significant gains, especially in
:00:22. > :00:24.Rotherham. Elsewhere, Labour has maintained its dominant position in
:00:25. > :00:29.West and South Yorkshire, and taken overall control of Bradford council.
:00:30. > :00:33.In North Yorkshire the Conservatives have kept control in Harrogate and
:00:34. > :00:37.Craven, but have lost seats overall. But the Liberal Democrats have lost
:00:38. > :00:42.the most seats. So, this is the picture; Labour have 430 councillors
:00:43. > :00:46.` that's up one. The Conservatives have 148 ` that's down by seven. Lib
:00:47. > :00:49.Dems have taken something of a beating, with 69 councillors ` down
:00:50. > :00:53.by 18 ` and UKIP now have 17 councillors ` up 16.
:00:54. > :00:56.beating, with 69 councillors ` down Other minor parties, including the
:00:57. > :01:09.Greens and Independents, have 63 ` that's up by seven.
:01:10. > :01:16.There were celebrations from Labour and the wind into the elections in
:01:17. > :01:24.Bradford needing two extra seat for an outside majority. `` leading
:01:25. > :01:27.into. UKIP cut the lead by taking a seat from Labour. In half a dozen
:01:28. > :01:33.others it was within 50 votes of winning. Respect were smashed. None
:01:34. > :01:41.of the ten candidates to put up came anywhere near winning. You come into
:01:42. > :01:46.town, make empty promises and do not deliver on them. What do you expect?
:01:47. > :01:50.People will see through that. The voters in Bradford West have seen
:01:51. > :01:53.through that. George Galloway made a lot of promises and he has not
:01:54. > :01:58.delivered. There were two other targets for Labour in West
:01:59. > :02:07.Yorkshire. It came within a whisker of winning in Calderdale. With the
:02:08. > :02:11.Conservatives picking up one seed from the Lib Dems, that left Labour
:02:12. > :02:15.just one short of the full majority. `` one seat. To the
:02:16. > :02:24.candidates have worked incredibly hard. I am incredibly pleased. It
:02:25. > :02:29.has been incredibly hard work. The candidates that have won have got
:02:30. > :02:34.the just reward. In Kirklees there was an extraordinary result. For the
:02:35. > :02:38.first time in living memory, all of the parties retained all of the
:02:39. > :02:43.seats they were defending, leaving Labour three short of a majority. I
:02:44. > :02:47.would have preferred some victories. But I'm sure there are at least
:02:48. > :02:52.three parties on the council have a chance of working together. If we
:02:53. > :02:56.work together for Kirklees, we have got massive challenges in the next
:02:57. > :03:00.couple of years, irrespective of the general election. We have to be
:03:01. > :03:06.careful not to lose track of that. Our purpose is not to fight
:03:07. > :03:13.elections. In Leeds, Labour consolidated the majority it already
:03:14. > :03:21.holds. Jonathan David Pryor is elected the counsellor... In South
:03:22. > :03:24.Yorkshire, before these elections, Labour had commanding leads in
:03:25. > :03:29.Barnsley, rather, Doncaster and Sheffield. It still does. But UKIP
:03:30. > :03:32.has clearly not the bit of the wind out of the sails.
:03:33. > :03:35.Well, in a moment we'll hear more from our political editor, Len
:03:36. > :03:39.Tingle, but first to the big story here in Yorkshire and that increase
:03:40. > :03:43.in the UKIP vote. There have been 16 gains for UKIP. Nine of these seats
:03:44. > :03:46.were just in Rotherham to add to the one that the party already had, with
:03:47. > :03:50.three in Sheffield and two in Wakefield, one in Bradford and one
:03:51. > :03:53.in Doncaster James Vincent has spent the day in Rotherham finding out why
:03:54. > :04:03.UKIP has attracted such support. James Vincent. A big box of juicy
:04:04. > :04:08.strawberries. The morning after the fright before for Labour in
:04:09. > :04:12.Rotherham. Voters are not sure they like what Ed Miliband is selling.
:04:13. > :04:24.Why did you vote UKIP? Just for a change. UKIP. You normally UKIP? No.
:04:25. > :04:30.Immigration is the first thing in people's mines. This man knows it is
:04:31. > :04:39.an awkward subject. Rotherham is full. We are getting too many of the
:04:40. > :04:45.wrong people. The country itself, we cannot afford it any more. I think
:04:46. > :04:52.the country is full up. When you say wrong people does that make you feel
:04:53. > :04:56.bad? In a way. We just cannot afford it. Although Labour won the most
:04:57. > :05:01.seats last night, they were beaten on her share of the vote. A big
:05:02. > :05:07.worry ahead of the general election. UKIP got 44% of the vote. Labour
:05:08. > :05:10.only got 41%. Labour made their own gains in this election but they are
:05:11. > :05:17.losing support at home with traditional voters. I hope it is not
:05:18. > :05:23.just a protest vote. I hope people think, I have voted once, and that
:05:24. > :05:30.is it. UKIP thinks it is here to stay. It may be Westminster yet. I
:05:31. > :05:34.think we may end up with three MPs in Westminster from Rotherham. Next
:05:35. > :05:39.year's general election will tell us. Len Tingle joins me now from the
:05:40. > :05:44.newsroom. Len, this was good news for Labour, but the big story of the
:05:45. > :05:49.day was UKIP's surge in popularity. Let's put that in perspective. Those
:05:50. > :05:52.seats by UKIP still leave it a much smaller party than liberal
:05:53. > :06:00.Democrats, Labour or Conservatives. It is nowhere near power or a share
:06:01. > :06:03.of power in any the nine district authorities in South and west
:06:04. > :06:10.Yorkshire. Labour controls are majorities seven of them and runs
:06:11. > :06:13.the other two as the biggest party. Clearly, Labour is still in a
:06:14. > :06:16.dominant position in west and runs the other two as the biggest party.
:06:17. > :06:18.Clearly, Labour is still in a dominant position in Western South
:06:19. > :06:21.Yorkshire. Can UKIP continue this momentum into next year for the
:06:22. > :06:23.general election? These were the last big elections before the
:06:24. > :06:29.general election. We have got the European results to come. UKIP is
:06:30. > :06:33.likely to take at least two of the seats across Yorkshire and the
:06:34. > :06:37.Humber. I think Labour can take some heart from the street interviews
:06:38. > :06:42.James Vincent did were some people were saying, yes, they think there
:06:43. > :06:46.needs to be a kick up the backside for the major parties, and we will
:06:47. > :06:49.vote for UKIP this time around. Maybe when we go back to the
:06:50. > :06:54.important general election, they will revert to what has been their
:06:55. > :06:59.traditional way of voting. UKIP will have to work hard to retain the
:07:00. > :07:02.momentum that it has got this time. Police investigating the death of a
:07:03. > :07:05.man in Leeds yesterday have tonight charged a man with murder. Officers
:07:06. > :07:08.were called just before 3am to reports of a fight at the Citispace
:07:09. > :07:13.apartment building near Regent Street. A postmortem examination has
:07:14. > :07:19.concluded that 22`year`old Adam Ryder died from a single stab wound.
:07:20. > :07:24.24`year`old Ashley Twist will appear before Leeds magistrates tomorrow.
:07:25. > :07:28.Another man, who was arrested in connection with this investigation,
:07:29. > :07:31.has been released on bail. After a long legal battle, it's been
:07:32. > :07:34.confirmed that the remains of King Richard III will stay in Leicester
:07:35. > :07:38.where they were found. The former king's bones were discovered under a
:07:39. > :07:41.council car park two years ago. Descendants of the Yorkist King
:07:42. > :07:46.wanted him buried in York Minster, and went to court to ask for a
:07:47. > :07:53.public consultation. But the High Court ruled against them.
:07:54. > :07:59.Obviously very disappointed with the outcome of this. But it is still
:08:00. > :08:04.early days. We are going to think about it and make some decisions
:08:05. > :08:09.over the weekend what we do next. I'm just really pleased that went to
:08:10. > :08:12.court in the first place. And again, Richard is Richard of York. His
:08:13. > :08:16.heart and soul lies in York even though his body is in Leicester.
:08:17. > :08:20.Rugby league, and a couple of our teams were in action tonight. And it
:08:21. > :08:23.was a disappointing evening for the Huddersfield Giants as they lost to
:08:24. > :08:27.against St Helen's. This was their first try ` Larne Patrick crossing
:08:28. > :08:30.in the 18th minute. But it wasn't enough to stop the Lancashire side
:08:31. > :08:37.taking the points and denying the Giants a seventh successive win.
:08:38. > :08:41.Leeds Rhinos were also in action. They beat Hull FC.
:08:42. > :08:51.Now the weather. Some very unsettled weather tomorrow. Some very heavy
:08:52. > :08:56.showers on the cards. Thundery, too. We will see an improvement through
:08:57. > :09:00.the weekend. It is down to this area of low pressure. There is an
:09:01. > :09:05.improvement on Monday. Heavy downpours this evening will clear
:09:06. > :09:09.away, leaving us with a largely dry night. More cloud from the south
:09:10. > :09:15.later. Not a cold night. Temperatures at 11 degrees. A lot of
:09:16. > :09:19.cloud about tomorrow morning. It will be largely dry through the
:09:20. > :09:24.morning but we will see outbreaks of showery rain pushing from the south.
:09:25. > :09:28.It will be very heavy and thundery. Very persistent. A weather warning
:09:29. > :09:32.for southern pasts of West Yorkshire.
:09:33. > :09:40.you over to Peter Gibson and National forecast.
:09:41. > :09:47.The bank holiday weekend weather is not looking user-friendly although
:09:48. > :09:57.most places should get one decent day out of the three and some places
:09:58. > :10:03.will get two. We have low pressure, and there will be showers around
:10:04. > :10:10.over the next couple of days particularly. Sunshine breaking
:10:11. > :10:14.through now and again. It will pick up temperatures. Tonight we have
:10:15. > :10:21.rain. We have had thunderstorms in northern England. They are moving
:10:22. > :10:32.into Northern Ireland. A lot of dry weather will stop misty in the
:10:33. > :10:36.north-east. On Saturday, there is a mass of cloud and rain running
:10:37. > :10:43.around the low pressure. There will be heavy rain. It will make slow
:10:44. > :10:44.progress northwards. Never
