:00:00. > :00:09.Thank you. That is all from us for this evening. It is
:00:10. > :00:15.Welcome to Look North. First tonight, the UKIP leader, Nigel
:00:16. > :00:18.Farage, has said he will be targeting seats in Yorkshire in next
:00:19. > :00:21.year's general election. It follows his party's triumph in the European
:00:22. > :00:25.elections both here and across the rest of the UK. UKIP topped the poll
:00:26. > :00:29.in the Yorkshire and Humber region and took three of the region's six
:00:30. > :00:33.seats. Labour won two and the Conservatives one. UKIP took 31% of
:00:34. > :00:36.the vote. It was a bad night for the Liberal Democrats, who came fifth.
:00:37. > :00:39.Some party members are now calling for Nick Clegg to stand down. We
:00:40. > :00:43.will be speaking to our political editor Len Tingle in a moment but,
:00:44. > :00:48.first, here he is with all the details.
:00:49. > :00:56.UK Independence Party, UKIP, 403,630. This was the point where it
:00:57. > :01:01.was clear that UKIP had made political history in Yorkshire,
:01:02. > :01:05.three new MEPs on their weight to the European Parliament. With UKIP
:01:06. > :01:12.topping the poll they were allocated three of Yorkshire and the Humber's
:01:13. > :01:18.six seats, with Labour getting two and the Conservatives getting one.
:01:19. > :01:21.The votes were counted council by counsel and UKIP came top of the
:01:22. > :01:27.poll in some surprising places, including York and Castor and
:01:28. > :01:34.Rotherham, all in the past the heartland of Labour. It shows there
:01:35. > :01:37.is a deep mistrust of the European Parliament and the European Union
:01:38. > :01:42.and they want some eyes and ears over there, some common, straight
:01:43. > :01:47.talking people. If you look at the overall vote we have done much
:01:48. > :01:55.better than we have in many European elections since 1999 so we have
:01:56. > :01:58.doubled our representation, so, yes, I think it is a satisfactory
:01:59. > :02:08.result. The Conservatives amassed enough votes for veteran MP Timothy
:02:09. > :02:20.Kirkhope to keep his seat at they were distant third. The Lib Dems
:02:21. > :02:24.came far`off the running. In my opinion we would probably be bit ``
:02:25. > :02:29.be higher if Nick Clegg was not our leader. Given what I hear from
:02:30. > :02:36.people on the doorstep, I think that is fair. Of the three UKIP winners,
:02:37. > :02:43.they say the first thing they are going to do is have a drink with
:02:44. > :02:48.Nigel. It has been a mentis 48 hours of
:02:49. > :02:54.reporting for you. Where has this surge UKIP from? These are not new
:02:55. > :03:03.voters, once you have never voted before. The turnout is exactly the
:03:04. > :03:10.same as it was five years ago so clearly UKIP took votes from Labour,
:03:11. > :03:16.probably more from the Conservatives and the Lib Dems and the BNP vote
:03:17. > :03:20.dissolved. The key is not so much grabbing votes this time around but
:03:21. > :03:24.keeping them for the more important vote, the general election next
:03:25. > :03:33.year. We went Rotherham where there was a surge for UKIP and we asked
:03:34. > :03:37.them people if they would vote for them next year?
:03:38. > :03:41.We want them to close the borders, that is it, and they've promised
:03:42. > :03:44.that they would do that. That is it. And would you vote for them in a
:03:45. > :03:49.general election? Yes, for definite, no more Conservative. No more.
:03:50. > :03:54.I don't want to be in Europe. Costs us too much money, .. I don't want
:03:55. > :03:57.to be in Europe. And next year when it's the general election when we're
:03:58. > :04:00.choosing a prime minister what will you do? UKIP. Cut immigration.
:04:01. > :04:03.There's too many. I'm not racist but there's too many.
:04:04. > :04:07.Depending on what the other issues are, I might vote for them again. I
:04:08. > :04:09.just thought that UKIP might be a better one to vote for for us this
:04:10. > :04:13.time. Just going to see what happens this
:04:14. > :04:16.year first, see what things come up about what's happening before I make
:04:17. > :04:23.a decision. Do that later in the year. So maybe UKIP next year? Yeah,
:04:24. > :04:30.maybe. It's a maybe. Where do Nick Clegg and his party go
:04:31. > :04:33.from here? You saw the Lib Dem candidate from Harrogate, one of the
:04:34. > :04:38.key seats you would hope that back road they would have hoped to take
:04:39. > :04:41.in. The candidate was basically saying she would have a better
:04:42. > :04:45.chance of winning if Nick Clegg was not the leader and others are saying
:04:46. > :04:49.the same kind of thing. At the moment that is not grabbing a huge
:04:50. > :04:53.head of steam through the party but clearly if you are getting those
:04:54. > :04:57.kind of whispers it is not good. It is only a year to go before the
:04:58. > :05:03.general election, will they switch or stick? We did that exercise of
:05:04. > :05:07.talking to people on the streets of Rotherham after the local election
:05:08. > :05:12.and we got exactly the reverse answers. It is up to UKIP now, they
:05:13. > :05:17.have those elected MEPs and councillors, they have to prove they
:05:18. > :05:20.can do the job and do it properly. A number of properties in Rotherham
:05:21. > :05:23.were evacuated this morning after a fire at a derelict house. Fire
:05:24. > :05:26.officers were called to Rawmarsh Hill in Parkgate just after 2:30am.
:05:27. > :05:29.Part of the building was demolished because of fears it would collapse.
:05:30. > :05:32.Rawmarsh Hill was closed for several hours.
:05:33. > :05:35.More than 5000 people have signed a petition calling for improved road
:05:36. > :05:39.safety following the death of a teenager in a hit`and`run crash in
:05:40. > :05:42.Sheffield. 14`year`old Jasmyn Chan died when she was struck by a
:05:43. > :05:45.vehicle at Normanton Hill more than two weeks ago. A 32`year`old man
:05:46. > :05:48.arrested in connection with her death has been released on bail.
:05:49. > :05:53.Campaigners say they have enough signatures to force a council debate
:05:54. > :05:56.on road safety. One of the tallest maypoles in
:05:57. > :05:59.England was erected at a festival in the village of Barwick near Leeds
:06:00. > :06:01.today. The celebrations included local primary school children
:06:02. > :06:05.dancing around the 90`foot`tall pole, a street market, brass band
:06:06. > :06:14.and procession. The event, which is held every three years, concluded
:06:15. > :06:18.with a volunteer climbing the pole. Rather them than me!
:06:19. > :06:21.Now, Rotherham woke up this morning to having a side in football's
:06:22. > :06:24.Championship. The Millers won the League One play`off final yesterday
:06:25. > :06:27.in the most dramatic way possible ` a penalty shoot out at Wembley. That
:06:28. > :06:28.means back`to`back promotions for the Millers, as Ian Bucknell
:06:29. > :06:39.reports. Somewhere in that hard are the two
:06:40. > :06:43.men who intend to take Rotherham to the top, Tommy Stewart and Steve
:06:44. > :06:52.Evans. Yesterday they shared their greatest achievement so far, with
:06:53. > :07:01.players and fans on the turf. We are going to do it today! Morale was
:07:02. > :07:05.high going into the game. Most Rotherham supporters sensed victory
:07:06. > :07:11.to make up for the dark times of the recent past, two administrations and
:07:12. > :07:14.a temporary move out of Rotherham. It is the third time I have been to
:07:15. > :07:19.Wembley to see Rotherham and hopefully we will see them in the
:07:20. > :07:25.Channel next year. It was Leyton Orient who took the lead with a
:07:26. > :07:29.wonder strike by mode `` Moses Odubajo. Five minutes later it got
:07:30. > :07:44.worse for them when Moses Odubajo set up his team`mate Cox. But Mark
:07:45. > :07:47.Greville scored once and what followed was magnificent. He may
:07:48. > :08:03.never score a better goal than the second. It went to penalties.
:08:04. > :08:08.I was a bit disappointed I did not get closer to the first one, I went
:08:09. > :08:19.to the wrong direction, but I did my job in the end. This is an
:08:20. > :08:24.unbelievable experience. The adventure goes on in the
:08:25. > :08:31.Championship. In football we can always dream. The Millers are going
:08:32. > :08:35.up and Tony and Steve are already plotting the next ascent.
:08:36. > :08:38.Well, the Millers will be having a victory parade through Rotherham
:08:39. > :08:43.tomorrow evening and we will have full coverage on Look North. I can't
:08:44. > :08:46.wait for that, it looks great. On to cricket, and Yorkshire are
:08:47. > :08:49.taking on the old enemy, Lancashire, in the County Championship.
:08:50. > :08:53.Lancashire were 325 all out and in reply Yorkshire have made a solid
:08:54. > :09:04.start ` they are 29 without loss at the close of play.
:09:05. > :09:11.It looks blooming awful for the rest of the week, a lot of rain, drying
:09:12. > :09:15.up through Friday and the weekend. Tomorrow we start with unsettled
:09:16. > :09:19.weather, spells of rain spreading from the south`east. We have a fair
:09:20. > :09:26.few showers, they will fizzle through the evening. A lot of cloud
:09:27. > :09:30.over night. The rain sets in from the southeastern later on, heavy
:09:31. > :09:36.spells towards dawn. Temperatures falling back to around ten or 11
:09:37. > :09:40.degrees. Tomorrow a cool and cloudy day. It will not be raining all day
:09:41. > :09:47.long but we will continue to see the app rakes of rain feeding in from
:09:48. > :09:52.the south`east and some very heavy spells at times. Temperatures of 13
:09:53. > :09:54.or 14 tomorrow. Another miserable day on Wednesday, the rain light and
:09:55. > :10:14.patchy on Thursday. Good evening. If I were to conduct a
:10:15. > :10:19.straw poll about the weather events today, I suspect we would get a
:10:20. > :10:24.split decision. There were significant differences around, we
:10:25. > :10:27.have sunshine and some warmth, but also this cloud and rain coming up
:10:28. > :10:33.through the Channel into the north of England. On top of that, some
:10:34. > :10:37.showers in the north-west, some of them thundery from Northern Ireland
:10:38. > :10:43.and Scotland, so a real eclectic mix. This will drift away over the
:10:44. > :10:46.next few hours, we will keep the cloud overnight, and we will see
:10:47. > :10:47.more
