:00:00. > :00:12.actor Rick Mayle has died suddenly at the age of 56.

:00:13. > :00:15.Good evening, welcome to Monday s Look North On tonight's programme `

:00:16. > :00:17.The Yorkshire family demandhng tighter regulation of onlind

:00:18. > :00:20.gambling, after their father racked up debts of more than ?50,000.

:00:21. > :00:27.If gambling is a problem, it is not just a better phone. `` a bht of

:00:28. > :00:29.fun. With the World Cup fast approaching

:00:30. > :00:33.many of us will be betting, we ask an expert why people get dr`wn in.

:00:34. > :00:35.Also tonight: Sheffield's long`awaited city centre

:00:36. > :00:38.shopping development will go ahead after the council steps in.

:00:39. > :00:41.And have you seen the faces appearing in fields high in the

:00:42. > :00:47.Pennines? We reveal what's going on. This was because Lee this afternoon,

:00:48. > :00:49.very lively conditions indedd, what about this week? Join me for this

:00:50. > :01:00.full forecast coming up shortly The family of a Sheffield m`n who

:01:01. > :01:09.amassed an online gambling debt of the industry. David

:01:10. > :01:11.Bradford was eventually jailed from his employer, re`mortg`ging

:01:12. > :01:15.his home and taking out bank loans to try to repay his debts ` all

:01:16. > :01:19.without his family's knowledge. But first, Tom Ingall

:01:20. > :01:27.has this report. Once, it was the preserve of

:01:28. > :01:30.the high street and the bingo hall. Nowadays, for a quick fluttdr or

:01:31. > :01:34.a serious wager, we can pick up It's officially called remote

:01:35. > :01:38.gambling, but this man knows the effects it can have

:01:39. > :01:40.are anything but. If you just search anywhere

:01:41. > :01:43.on the internet, you can find Adam Bradford's father has just gone

:01:44. > :01:48.to prison after stealing ?50,00 from his work

:01:49. > :01:53.on remortgaging the family home from his work

:01:54. > :01:55.and remortgaging the family home, One of the things we have ldarned

:01:56. > :02:01.very quickly since this all came to light is people who have a gambling

:02:02. > :02:05.addiction or any problem like that He has not told us anything about

:02:06. > :02:11.it, he has not said a word `bout it. And he was a very good fathdr,

:02:12. > :02:14.a real family man. Figures for new accounts

:02:15. > :02:15.being opened with online gambling providdrs tell

:02:16. > :02:17.their own story. In 2010`2011,

:02:18. > :02:20.it was 3.31 million, rising to just under 4 millhon to

:02:21. > :02:24.now 4.5 million a year. In total, it's believed there

:02:25. > :02:28.are 16.5 million accounts open, That is, they'd been used

:02:29. > :02:34.in the last 12 months. Earlier today,

:02:35. > :02:36.I spoke to these people, They are essentially a voluntary

:02:37. > :02:41.trade group for the companids that They told me

:02:42. > :02:46.the social responsibility mdasures in place for online gambling are

:02:47. > :02:48.extensive, but they admit problem gambling

:02:49. > :02:51.is a complex area and they would never suggest

:02:52. > :02:54.improvements could not be m`de. They told me on their website

:02:55. > :02:58.about some of the things th`t offer support to people who think they

:02:59. > :03:01.might have a problem, like online forums and the ability to exclude

:03:02. > :03:04.yourself from certain websites. But they do say they are in constant

:03:05. > :03:07.touch with the regulators and academics to identify any new

:03:08. > :03:13.initiatives that might help. I do know that it was his choice to

:03:14. > :03:18.do what he did and he did obviously have some other issues, and I think

:03:19. > :03:22.that, really, more needs to be done to get the message out therd that

:03:23. > :03:25.gambling is actually a problem, Adam didn't realise he was losing

:03:26. > :03:31.a father to gambling It's the inspiration

:03:32. > :03:45.for his campaign. Adam joins us now, and in the studio

:03:46. > :03:49.in Salford, Doctor Hughes, from the University of Leeds, an expdrt in

:03:50. > :03:53.online gambling. Adam, if wd can start with you, I was speakhng with

:03:54. > :03:56.you and your mother before the programme and it is clear this has

:03:57. > :04:02.devastated your family. Tell us about the campaign you are starting.

:04:03. > :04:07.On the back of what has happened to my dad, I want to speak out more

:04:08. > :04:10.about what is done, and I know myself is what he has done hs

:04:11. > :04:14.managed to rack up that account and go to another and another and I have

:04:15. > :04:22.seen holds where things could really be patched up. I've also bedn much

:04:23. > :04:28.more, had my eyes opened to the market of it, and he saw it as a way

:04:29. > :04:37.to make money and I really want to put the message out there. This is

:04:38. > :04:45.very brave of you to speak out, why are you doing? I think I nedd to do

:04:46. > :04:48.it for my own family, we ard not the only ones, though, and I want to see

:04:49. > :04:53.the Government and the gambling companies, who my dad spent all of

:04:54. > :04:57.this money on, to say, yes, we have a social responsibility and we are

:04:58. > :05:01.going to take it more seriotsly Let's bring in Doctor Hughes. How

:05:02. > :05:07.big a problem do think this is, how many people like David have we got?

:05:08. > :05:15.We are not actually quite stre about how many people are involved in

:05:16. > :05:20.Internet gambling. Out of those we are not sure how many peopld have

:05:21. > :05:24.problems and feel they are `ddicted, or that their Internet gambling is

:05:25. > :05:28.causing problems for their families, but it is very significant. Isn t

:05:29. > :05:33.there a fairly straightforw`rd solution? When I or anybody else

:05:34. > :05:36.applies for a credit card, we get credit checked. Why can't wd have a

:05:37. > :05:43.gambling check as well? Surdly that is the way to solve these problems?

:05:44. > :05:50.One of the real viewers and appeals of Internet gambling is its

:05:51. > :05:57.anonymity, so it is very difficult to track who is involved in Internet

:05:58. > :06:02.gambling. So in order to establish those credit checks, you wotld need

:06:03. > :06:09.to be able to identify who hs involved, and it may actually be

:06:10. > :06:15.that some people are able to play online, but for a significant number

:06:16. > :06:19.of people, actually, it movds from playing to significant problems that

:06:20. > :06:27.have these devastating impacts on family and obviously on the

:06:28. > :06:30.camber's I live. `` the camber's live. Do you think tighter

:06:31. > :06:36.regulations would have stopped your dad going as far as he did? I

:06:37. > :06:39.couldn't say, the regulation may help, but the market is another

:06:40. > :06:44.issue, the way it appeals to people and that is then to my dad, would he

:06:45. > :06:47.have done it, would he not? It seems like he needed the money, btt I

:06:48. > :06:55.think people shouldn't be looking to gambling for the option. Both of

:06:56. > :06:59.you, thank you for joining ts. It is the biggest county in England

:07:00. > :07:04.and renowned for its beauty, but North Yorkshire is also the worst

:07:05. > :07:10.place in the country for rule crime. The police force there is looking at

:07:11. > :07:13.new ways of dealing with crhme to prevent wrongdoing in remotd areas.

:07:14. > :07:17.It's a weekday evening on the outskirts of Richmond.

:07:18. > :07:19.Police here are joining forces with farmers and residents

:07:20. > :07:26.Tonight, they're patrolling the countryside together.

:07:27. > :07:28.Isolated areas which locals here know even better

:07:29. > :07:33.They know the nooks and crannies and where these locations are.

:07:34. > :07:36.You can probably just highlhght to them what crime trends are occurring

:07:37. > :07:42.at the time and they will probably look bit more with that information.

:07:43. > :07:44.They can give us information about something that's happdned

:07:45. > :07:50.John Hindmarch is one of five locals who joined tonight's

:07:51. > :07:57.He's lived in the countryside all his life and is one of

:07:58. > :08:01.a growing number beginning to take a stance against the criminal gangs.

:08:02. > :08:04.You can either sit at home and let these people commit

:08:05. > :08:14.their crimes or you can try and do something about it.

:08:15. > :08:17.I think there's a lot of criminals in the area who are

:08:18. > :08:21.repeat offenders and they know who we are, but we know who thex are.

:08:22. > :08:23.I think that makes a huge difference.

:08:24. > :08:26.Around a third of those who commit rural crime in

:08:27. > :08:28.North Yorkshire will have travelled here from surrounding counthes.

:08:29. > :08:30.Tonight, though, police are on the lookout for any

:08:31. > :08:32.unusual cross`border activity, with automatic number plate

:08:33. > :08:35.recognition being used to alert them to any suspicious vehicles.

:08:36. > :08:38.And the partnership between police and locals is proving effective

:08:39. > :08:55.The countryside is no longer seen here as an easy target.

:08:56. > :09:00.Look North later, the Yorkshire company looking to beat the French

:09:01. > :09:04.at their own game. Plans to transform shopping

:09:05. > :09:06.in Sheffield will happen, The city has been waiting

:09:07. > :09:10.for a new shopping area for over a decade ` but now funding hs being

:09:11. > :09:15.put in place to make it happen. Plans to transform parts

:09:16. > :09:30.of Sheffield city centre They took shape when developer

:09:31. > :09:34.Hammerson came on board and named the ?400 million scheme

:09:35. > :09:37.Sevenstone in 2007. But delays and the economic

:09:38. > :09:40.downturn put the project on hold. With no firm date for it to be

:09:41. > :09:43.built, the council parted company Today, the council has reve`led that

:09:44. > :09:47.the development of this area is now firmly back

:09:48. > :09:49.on the agenda. James Vincent joins

:09:50. > :09:52.us from Sheffield city centre now. James,

:09:53. > :10:02.tell us what's been said today. We have had three world cups since

:10:03. > :10:07.this was introduced. They w`nted to demolish large swathes of the City

:10:08. > :10:11.centre, creating a new shopping centre and it could never gdt off

:10:12. > :10:14.the ground. You can see the derelict buildings are still here wahting to

:10:15. > :10:17.be demolished, including thd old grows and it could never get off the

:10:18. > :10:19.ground. You can see the derdlict buildings are still here wahting to

:10:20. > :10:24.be demolished, including thd old grows in of the credit crunch,

:10:25. > :10:29.parting company with the orhginal developers, going it alone, telling

:10:30. > :10:31.us they are going to take a ?60 million loan to make sure these

:10:32. > :10:34.compulsory purchase orders happen and they can demolish these

:10:35. > :10:39.buildings and effectively start again in Sheffield City centre. What

:10:40. > :10:43.they have been saying today is it will happen. People in Sheffield

:10:44. > :10:47.probably don't think it will after 13 years. They say it well `nd it's

:10:48. > :10:49.the biggest projects they h`ve got going on in the City. It sotnds

:10:50. > :10:51.promising. We're trying to recreate a vibrant,

:10:52. > :10:55.dynamic city centre with, you know, not just shops and bars but also the

:10:56. > :10:58.office developments and so on and everything that comes with that

:10:59. > :11:02.from a lower base than other cities. And to allow us to compete on

:11:03. > :11:06.a level laying field with the other cities, this scheme is crithcal to

:11:07. > :11:08.helping us achieve that. So I think it is probably

:11:09. > :11:24.the most important project It sounds promising, when whll it

:11:25. > :11:27.all happen? They want to get a developer on board by the end of the

:11:28. > :11:33.year, a tight timescale and they wanted the demolishing to start next

:11:34. > :11:36.year. They also wanted finished by 2019. Someone said to be thd people

:11:37. > :11:40.Sheffield to not think it whll happen until they start construction

:11:41. > :11:44.and demolition of these buildings. But after 13 years, I don't think

:11:45. > :11:46.they will think it has happdned until they are at the shops putting

:11:47. > :11:48.their pin number in the till. Firefighters have spent

:11:49. > :11:51.the day dealing with a largd blaze which started at Thirsk Indtstrial

:11:52. > :11:54.Estate early this morning. They were called to Todd Waste

:11:55. > :11:56.management just after five o'clock. Around 150,000 tonnes

:11:57. > :11:59.of household waste went up, but none of it is thought

:12:00. > :12:01.to be toxic. About half of the 40 firefighters

:12:02. > :12:04.have now been called away, but the blaze is expected to

:12:05. > :12:07.smoulder for the next few d`ys. There was a major fire

:12:08. > :12:16.at the same plant three years ago. Support staff at a school

:12:17. > :12:18.in Rotherham for children with special ndeds have

:12:19. > :12:21.been on strike today over concerns surrounding the staff recruhtment

:12:22. > :12:24.process, and health and safdty. Members of the GMB union sax student

:12:25. > :12:27.behaviour at Abbey School, near Rotherham, has been very poor since

:12:28. > :12:30.a restructuring earlier this year. They say this along with

:12:31. > :12:33.the current recruitment process The school says it's continting

:12:34. > :12:37.negotiations, and that it's committed to providing outstanding

:12:38. > :12:41.provision for Abbey's students. Malaysian police have denied reports

:12:42. > :12:43.that Yorkshire backpacker Gareth Huntley was involved

:12:44. > :12:46.in a fight before he went mhssing Mr Huntley's body was found last

:12:47. > :12:50.week, eight days after he sdt off It was reported that he may be have

:12:51. > :12:56.been murdered, and there were claims Police say they now believe

:12:57. > :13:06.those reports were incorrect. Police are investigating after

:13:07. > :13:08.vandals broke into a childrdn's farm attraction in Esholt near Shipley,

:13:09. > :13:11.setting free some of the anhmals Animal pens were damaged at

:13:12. > :13:15.St Leanord's Farm Park, and some rare breeds are sthll

:13:16. > :13:17.missing. The farm's owner thinks it was

:13:18. > :13:19.all part They have gone into a field,

:13:20. > :13:28.they have ripped down the fdnces and then they have got into

:13:29. > :13:32.a field and chased the deer around. I don't know

:13:33. > :13:35.if the deer has escaped or they have taken the deer away, there have

:13:36. > :13:56.been reports of a muntjac dder The first batch of toolmakers picked

:13:57. > :14:00.up their clothes today near Leeds, based on the success of those in the

:14:01. > :14:04.London Olympics. Their jobs will range from pointing out the route to

:14:05. > :14:08.where the toilets, but mostly, they will smile be happy.

:14:09. > :14:12.I really wanted to get involved with the London Olympics,

:14:13. > :14:16.but didn't have the opportunity so when this came up, I looked at

:14:17. > :14:20.the chance and I'm so excitdd that I'd chosen to be part of it all

:14:21. > :14:23.I volunteered in the past the London 2012 and I that.

:14:24. > :14:26.Obviously, I am from Harrog`te, so it is on my doorstep,

:14:27. > :14:30.I volunteered in the past for London 2012 and I enjoyed that.

:14:31. > :14:33.Obviously, I am from Harrog`te, so it is on my doorstep,

:14:34. > :14:37.It is the first time I have done this sort

:14:38. > :14:41.of thing and the main thing is, 2,000 people, all doing simhlar

:14:42. > :14:47.And keeping on that theme, xou have heard about calls to Newcastle but

:14:48. > :14:52.what about cheese to French? Just days after this man's Wes w`s

:14:53. > :14:55.sampled by royalty at the D`Day celebrations in Paris, Samudl

:14:56. > :14:59.Valentines from Allerton Bywater have got their first order from

:15:00. > :15:07.across the Channel. He is otr business correspondent.

:15:08. > :15:14.This year's French Eurovision entry asks "what is missing"? Chedse may

:15:15. > :15:17.not be an obvious answer but what about a nice Wensleydale fl`voured

:15:18. > :15:22.with `` flavoured with Wakefield rhubarb. It is one of the cheese is

:15:23. > :15:26.taking Paris by storm. Todax, we have come in and look at thd

:15:27. > :15:32.computer and the first female is in order to send cheese to Parhs in

:15:33. > :15:36.France. `` the first e`mail. It may be Colston Newcastle but we are

:15:37. > :15:41.having a go. The order comes just days after the cheeses were served

:15:42. > :15:45.at the D`Day celebrations in Paris, attended by the Queen. This is the

:15:46. > :15:50.Duke of Wellington cheese that we created, would you like your taste?

:15:51. > :15:57.This is the point where the reporter would usually tasted, but I don t

:15:58. > :16:05.like cheese, so, Brian? There we go. Thank you. The big push for French

:16:06. > :16:09.buyers was triggered when Yorkshire won the grand apart and even though

:16:10. > :16:12.they are almost 12 miles off the race route, they have made the most

:16:13. > :16:19.of the possibilities. We were thinking, what have can we lake of

:16:20. > :16:24.this, but we thought we would do a cheese tour, we have toured the

:16:25. > :16:29.train towns and cities that have roots: Red Yorkshire and it

:16:30. > :16:33.snowballed from there, we h`ve heard a lot of opportunity but it has been

:16:34. > :16:39.hard work. You only get that what you put into it. We wanted to

:16:40. > :16:43.springboard and sell more abroad and exporter and we see this as a market

:16:44. > :16:47.for Yorkshire produce and particularly Yorkshire cheese and,

:16:48. > :16:52.who knows, we might even be selling pork pies over there. Would this

:16:53. > :16:57.business have sold cheese to the French without the Tour de France?

:16:58. > :17:02.We don't know but what we do know without the cycle race is they would

:17:03. > :17:07.never have attempted it. This would have been a great idea to

:17:08. > :17:12.try the cheese but she didn't think to bring us any.

:17:13. > :17:15.Mind you, I think the camer`man ate it all.

:17:16. > :17:19.If you want more information about the Tour de France and you tse

:17:20. > :17:23.Twitter, we have a brand`new service. You can find all of the

:17:24. > :17:26.latest links about the Tour de France in Yorkshire.

:17:27. > :17:31.Coming up, have you noticed anything odd going on in a field near you? We

:17:32. > :17:32.reveal why some rather strange shapes are appearing high in the

:17:33. > :17:43.Pennines. Let's get the sport now, thd

:17:44. > :17:49.greatest catchable time on Friday night. It was on the boundary, he

:17:50. > :17:54.dived up and caught it just as it was about to go over and it would

:17:55. > :18:00.have been six and he threw ht back. Nearly as good as Gary Ball`nce a

:18:01. > :18:06.year ago. That is what they do in the rugby

:18:07. > :18:09.league, which is where I st`rt. Leeds will play Warrington `nd

:18:10. > :18:13.Castleford will play witness in the Challenge Cup semifinals. The rhinos

:18:14. > :18:17.huffed and puffed but eventtally got through. It was the Tigers who stole

:18:18. > :18:18.the headlines, they were magnificent in knocking out the holders Wigan at

:18:19. > :18:23.Wigan. Cas have got their class back,

:18:24. > :18:27.this should be good. But there is

:18:28. > :18:43.a question mark hanging over. And into the corner goes

:18:44. > :18:57.James Clapper. A bit of controversy

:18:58. > :18:59.leading up to the try. And into the corner goes

:19:00. > :19:01.James Clare. A bit of controversy

:19:02. > :19:04.leading up to the try. Driving it over,

:19:05. > :19:09.but I don't think he's got ht down. Bell finally finds a weakness

:19:10. > :19:19.in the Castleford line. What a pass,

:19:20. > :19:30.and what about that try? What an unbelievable effort

:19:31. > :19:41.in the second half. I thought we were by far

:19:42. > :19:44.and away the better team in the first half, but second half,

:19:45. > :19:48.to have to defend arrow in line like in the first half, but second half,

:19:49. > :19:52.to have to defend our own lhne like we did was unbelievable and to then

:19:53. > :19:56.hold and finish in the end, it was We knew it was going to be tough,

:19:57. > :20:03.as all cup games are, but here against Wigan,

:20:04. > :20:06.the champions, it was outst`nding. You have surprised people all

:20:07. > :20:09.season, how much you think this I don't know about rock the world,

:20:10. > :20:12.but We have competed pretty well
