:00:00. > :00:00.so it's goodbye from me, and on BBC One we

:00:00. > :00:00.Good evening and welcome to Monday's Look North.

:00:00. > :00:00.Paying the price of developing Leeds.

:00:07. > :00:10.Our investigation finds trade has fallen 40% at the city's market

:00:11. > :00:21.since building work started on a new shopping centre.

:00:22. > :00:25.It is very, very bleak. I won't be able to continue after Christmas in

:00:26. > :00:30.trade level stay like this. We'll also hear from one le`ding

:00:31. > :00:34.councillor who tells Look North Relatives pay tribute to

:00:35. > :00:40.the traders "kind and peace`loving" And the disabled teenager from York

:00:41. > :00:55.scaling new heights rock clhmbing Variable amounts of Cloud today in

:00:56. > :01:03.York. But all of the details coming up shortly.

:01:04. > :01:09.Good evening and welcome to Look North.

:01:10. > :01:12.Trade at Leeds Market has f`llen by 40% in just two months with nine out

:01:13. > :01:15.of ten traders saying it is because of the closure of the car p`rk to

:01:16. > :01:18.make way for the new Victorha Gate development. That's the finding of

:01:19. > :01:26.an exclusive BBC survey which spoke to 160 stall holders.

:01:27. > :01:38.Mid day and this man is waiting for customers. He waits dot`macro and

:01:39. > :01:45.waits. He has been in Leeds market for decades and has seen thd ups and

:01:46. > :01:49.downs. Until a few months b`ck when trade dropped off a cliff. Trade at

:01:50. > :01:56.the moment is rock bottom. Last Saturday we were 50% down across the

:01:57. > :02:02.board. Friday about 40%, mid week, 20%. On average about 20% across the

:02:03. > :02:11.board. Where once there werd healthy profits, now huge losses. ?2500 in

:02:12. > :02:15.just one week. It is a storx told across Leeds market. A BBC survey

:02:16. > :02:22.asked every stall if there had been a significant change in the past two

:02:23. > :02:29.months. Out of 160 responses, 1 3 said yes. The average drop, 39% down

:02:30. > :02:36.in just two months. The cause? 0% gave just one answer. The c`r park.

:02:37. > :02:44.The closing of the market c`r pass. The car park. It is the car park.

:02:45. > :02:48.The car park closed and trade halved overnight. The car park closed down

:02:49. > :02:55.and the business started to go down and down. We are offering an online

:02:56. > :02:59.service, home delivery. We want to keep the customers happy but nobody

:03:00. > :03:05.wants to walk half a mile whth six carrier bags full of meat. The car

:03:06. > :03:08.park closed because of the new multi`million pound Victori` gate

:03:09. > :03:14.development. It will bring John Lewis and more trade sits on the

:03:15. > :03:19.former market car park and ht won't be ready for two more years. Nobody

:03:20. > :03:21.from the council would come on camera to do an interview btt they

:03:22. > :03:25.sent a statement saying thex are working with the developer to make

:03:26. > :03:30.parking available for the m`rket and promote other places to park and

:03:31. > :03:34.alternative ways of getting here. They said they are working with

:03:35. > :03:42.traders with a range of prolotions, offers and events. ?2 for your

:03:43. > :03:48.strawberries. Many traders say they have seen little sign of th`t help

:03:49. > :03:53.and this man fears for his future. Very, very bleak. I will not be able

:03:54. > :03:58.to continue after Christmas if trade stays like this and I know ` lot of

:03:59. > :04:02.other traders will be the s`me. Either they will have to drop the

:04:03. > :04:09.wrens, helpers with the ratds or expect a house of cards scenario

:04:10. > :04:11.were so many shops will shut down. With a ?30 million refurbishment,

:04:12. > :04:16.the next few years should bd a new dawn for Leeds market will stop the

:04:17. > :04:20.question is, how many old traders will be here to see it?

:04:21. > :04:24.Well, we did ask to speak to someone from the ruling Labour partx

:04:25. > :04:27.Stewart Golton is the leader of the Liberal Democrats on

:04:28. > :04:34.I think Look North did the city of Leeds a good service.

:04:35. > :04:37.They highlighted the plight some of our traders feel like they `re in.

:04:38. > :04:42.Having a new development, Vhctoria Gate with a new John Lewis hs a

:04:43. > :04:47.It is meant to be the goose that lays the golden egg.

:04:48. > :04:50.We don't want to make sure the market ends up eight de`d duck

:04:51. > :04:56.So we need to make sure that our traders are able to trade whilst

:04:57. > :05:00.The problems seems to be th`t the council are saying this is

:05:01. > :05:06.It isn't because this is gohng to take a couple of years to btild

:05:07. > :05:10.Is that two years of torment for the traders, who might not even

:05:11. > :05:15.Our job as a council was to make sure that isn't to years

:05:16. > :05:20.I understand the council ard looking at seeing whether they can get

:05:21. > :05:22.reduced parking fees in negotiation with some private operators.

:05:23. > :05:26.That needs to happen sooner rather than later.

:05:27. > :05:33.It is a very well loved institution, the market and we need to m`ke sure

:05:34. > :05:38.The second thing is making sure we promote the market as much

:05:39. > :05:43.Especially those that work within the centre of Leeds, that they

:05:44. > :05:48.Just using it once a week and spending ?5,

:05:49. > :05:51.maybe just buying your lunch there would make a huge differencd to

:05:52. > :05:56.I know you are singing the songs on behalf of the traders re`lly

:05:57. > :06:00.but shouldn't the ruling Labour group on the council realisdd this

:06:01. > :06:03.was going to happen before the Victoria Gate development started?

:06:04. > :06:06.It was obvious part parking closing down would cause problems?

:06:07. > :06:09.They were given assurances there were alternatives in place.

:06:10. > :06:13.Your investigation has obviously highlighted that is not the case.

:06:14. > :06:18.I don't think it is a party political issue,

:06:19. > :06:23.it is a working partnership with the council, all the party groupings

:06:24. > :06:25.and the traders to get this stabilised as soon as possible.

:06:26. > :06:30.And in the long`term will mhllions on this new retail sector?

:06:31. > :06:34.Hopefully the new retail operation at the

:06:35. > :06:36.shopping centre will bring hn even more people to this end of town

:06:37. > :06:39.But when they come down to this end of town

:06:40. > :06:43.and are attracted by John Ldwis they need to have some traddrs

:06:44. > :06:46.offering them something to bite at the market and obviously we need

:06:47. > :06:50.to make sure they stay in btsiness throughout this sensitive pdriod.

:06:51. > :07:03.If you would like to get in touch with those on this or any other

:07:04. > :07:12.story, we are on Facebook. Next tonight,

:07:13. > :07:31.the cousins of a student murdered in Sheffield have paid tribtte to

:07:32. > :07:34.their relative, describing him Anowar Tagabo was killed on

:07:35. > :07:40.a night out after a family wedding. His family now want

:07:41. > :07:55.his killer brought to justice. Anowar Tagabo came to Britahn to

:07:56. > :07:57.dedicate his life to peace. He had witnessed shocking bloodshed and

:07:58. > :08:02.cruelty in Sudan and fled the violence to study for a degree in

:08:03. > :08:06.these studies at Bradford University. It is a terribld irony

:08:07. > :08:12.that our night out in Sheffheld should end in his murder. E been at

:08:13. > :08:14.a family wedding on May the 25th when he encountered a large crowd

:08:15. > :08:19.outside the Viper rooms nightclub will stop he was attacked and fell

:08:20. > :08:26.and died nine days later. Hhs cousins are devastated, describing

:08:27. > :08:29.him as kind and peace`loving. They cannot believe he survived the war

:08:30. > :08:33.zone to end up dying in what they still regard as one of the safest

:08:34. > :08:41.countries in the world. It hs tragic. This experience is `wful

:08:42. > :08:53.when your cousin dies in a circumstance. The family cannot

:08:54. > :09:01.express our sorrow. The reaction of his mother in the refugee c`mp was

:09:02. > :09:09.tremendous. It was very sad. This is very tragic for the family. Those

:09:10. > :09:21.people who are responsible for the crime we need to be caught. The

:09:22. > :09:25.police investigation is continuing. One man was arrested over the

:09:26. > :09:27.weekend and released on bail. The Saturn in a second man was `rrested

:09:28. > :09:31.and is being questioned by police. Miners unions have been in London to

:09:32. > :09:34.ask for the government's help to keep a North Yorkshire coal mine

:09:35. > :09:37.open beyond next Autumn. They've been meeting the

:09:38. > :09:40.Energy Minister to ask for around ?70 million to keep

:09:41. > :09:42.Kellingley colliery going. It's currently planned to close

:09:43. > :09:45.in 2015 with the loss of 700 jobs. Our business correspondent,

:09:46. > :09:47.Danni Hewson, is at Westminster So Danni, do the unions

:09:48. > :10:03.like what they've heard? What they have been told if they can

:10:04. > :10:06.come up with a plan that represents value for money for the UK taxpayer,

:10:07. > :10:14.then the government will look at it. I must stress state aid, although it

:10:15. > :10:20.is signed off by Europe it does come out of UK taxpayers money. So the

:10:21. > :10:26.government have a fine line to walk between saving jobs and not wasting

:10:27. > :10:31.cash. I am joined by the NUL and Nigel Adams, the MP for the area.

:10:32. > :10:36.Chris, value for money, can this represent value for money? We can

:10:37. > :10:40.demonstrate it is value for money for the taxpayer to keep 1300 men

:10:41. > :10:48.and people in the supply industries in work, as up poster giving them a

:10:49. > :10:56.ten thousand download to put them out of work. You have been trying to

:10:57. > :11:07.attract private investor. You would think a private investor wotld have

:11:08. > :11:15.been found by now? You would have thought so, but with mining their is

:11:16. > :11:17.lots of uncertainties and hhgh capital expenditure at the start.

:11:18. > :11:25.You have to wait until it is developed to produce the cold. There

:11:26. > :11:28.is uncertainty the moment as to where the electricity will be

:11:29. > :11:32.generated from and the environmental issues. Nigel, we know this has been

:11:33. > :11:36.done elsewhere, Germany and Spain. Why wouldn't the UK do it? The

:11:37. > :11:45.government can only look at what has been the government for help. They

:11:46. > :11:53.have offered cash to do that, ? 0 million and that is still on the

:11:54. > :11:55.table despite one of the parties walking away last week. But that

:11:56. > :11:57.money is still there. I would like to see this plan. We all want to CB

:11:58. > :11:59.'s minds stay open, we need this coal and these are highly skilled

:12:00. > :12:05.jobs in our region which we must keep. The government can only deal

:12:06. > :12:09.with what is put to them for hope. The money is still on the t`ble If

:12:10. > :12:13.this plan comes forward, I `m pleased the Minister has sahd they

:12:14. > :12:21.will look at it. But it does have two represent value for mondy by the

:12:22. > :12:29.taxpayer. The mountain needdd could be up to around ?80 million. Unions

:12:30. > :12:32.will go away, talks with thd company over the next couple of days and

:12:33. > :12:36.come up to the plan and then it is back to the drawing board.

:12:37. > :12:40.In other news, the former partner of a wom`n from

:12:41. > :12:43.Leeds who died after being `ttacked by two pit bull dogs has pldaded

:12:44. > :12:45.guilty to owning a banned animal under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

:12:46. > :12:47.He was appearing at Leeds Magistrates Court.

:12:48. > :12:50.27`year`old Emma Bennett was attacked by the dogs at her home

:12:51. > :12:52.Police were alerted after ndighbours heard screams coming

:12:53. > :12:55.Lee Horner, who's 34 and from Helston Green

:12:56. > :12:59.in Middleton, admitted two charges of possession of a banned dog.

:13:00. > :13:10.A man has absconded from HMP Hatfield in Doncaster. Darrdll Roy

:13:11. > :13:15.Burbeary was last seen at 7.20pm yesterday. The 43`year`old was

:13:16. > :13:18.sentenced to 30 months imprhsonment for burglary last year. Burbeary is

:13:19. > :13:24.originally from the Heeley `rea of Sheffield and officers belidve he

:13:25. > :13:28.may be making his way back to the city. Although he could be `nywhere

:13:29. > :13:30.in the UK. Anyone who sees him is asked to call South Yorkshire

:13:31. > :13:37.It's been announced that thd Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and

:13:38. > :13:40.Prince Harry will be in Yorkshire for the Grand Depart.

:13:41. > :13:43.William, Kate and Harry will be in Yorkshire

:13:44. > :13:46.for stage one of the Tour dd France on Saturday the 5th of July.

:13:47. > :13:49.That day's racing starts in Leeds and finishes in Harrogate,

:13:50. > :13:57.Roy Rowbotham, one of the D`Day veterans wd

:13:58. > :14:00.featured earlier this month on Look North has died at the age of 93 Roy

:14:01. > :14:04.had been able to travel from York to join fellow veterans

:14:05. > :14:06.for the Normandy ceremony m`rking the 70th anniversary of the

:14:07. > :14:11.He died this weekend, days after returning home.

:14:12. > :14:16.His family have said he livdd a very full life.

:14:17. > :14:19.A Sheffield`based therapy unit for patients with life`thre`tening

:14:20. > :14:23.blood disorders has been expanded to help patients across Yorkshhre.

:14:24. > :14:25.It's one of only six units in England to treat people with

:14:26. > :14:31.Mark Ritson who has a severe aplastic anaemia s`ys

:14:32. > :14:40.without the centre he would have been forced to travel to London

:14:41. > :14:47.I have had to get here very quickly on a number of occasions. If I would

:14:48. > :14:48.have had to have gone to Ledds Manchester, it would have h`d to

:14:49. > :14:54.have been more of a problem. Plans for the re`interment of King

:14:55. > :14:57.Richard III have been revealed. Last Last month descendants of the

:14:58. > :15:01.Yorkist King lost their leg`l battle A new tomb will be built

:15:02. > :15:05.at Leicester Cathedral at a cost a cabinet maker who is a known

:15:06. > :15:08.direct descendent of Richard III?s The coffin will be built

:15:09. > :15:10.by a cabinet maker who is a known direct descendent of

:15:11. > :15:18.Richard III?s sister, Anne. The Chief Executive of

:15:19. > :15:21.Sheffield Wednesday, Graham Mackrell, who was responsible

:15:22. > :15:24.for the stadium's safety at the time of the Hillsborough tragedy

:15:25. > :15:28.25 years ago was accused of relying He said he had trusted safety

:15:29. > :15:33.engineers to do their job. Mr Mackrell was questioned

:15:34. > :15:51.throughout today This man had the ultimate

:15:52. > :15:58.responsibility for the stadhum at the time of the disaster. 96

:15:59. > :16:01.Liverpool fans were killed hn the 1989 FA Cup semifinal against

:16:02. > :16:08.Nottingham Forest. At this hearing, he was accused of pointing fingers

:16:09. > :16:12.at others on safety issues. He told the jury he had inherited an

:16:13. > :16:18.inadequate safety system whdn he joined the club in 1986. He had

:16:19. > :16:20.trust and confidence up grotnd safety engineers told him and had no

:16:21. > :16:27.to believe there were any s`fety issues. The inquest was told the

:16:28. > :16:33.stadium had been without an updated safety certificate in 1987. Nick

:16:34. > :16:37.Brown, counsel for seven bereaved Liverpool families accused him of

:16:38. > :16:44.being completely asleep concerning ground safety issues. No, hd said he

:16:45. > :16:49.had always been proactive. He was questioned about overcrowding in the

:16:50. > :16:56.pens on the terraces in the late 1980s. Christina Lambert QC asked,

:16:57. > :17:01.had there been wholly illeg`l capacity on the lapping 's Lane

:17:02. > :17:07.terraces at 10,200 when changes had left fewer spaces. It was shmply

:17:08. > :17:11.common sense. He replied, I don t necessarily agree with you but I

:17:12. > :17:14.acknowledge what you are saxing The new inquests into the deaths of the

:17:15. > :17:20.96 fans are expected to continue into next year.

:17:21. > :17:24.Meet the Yorkshire teenager getting ready to represent Team GB `t the

:17:25. > :17:39.It's a bad time to be a Bradford Bulls supporter.

:17:40. > :17:41.avoiding relegation from thd Super League were dealt another blow at

:17:42. > :17:44.the Super League were dealt another blow at the weekend when thdy were

:17:45. > :18:12.Frist has done a sterling job, but it was down to recent results. Every

:18:13. > :18:17.game that goes by and every loss we gather in, the window of opportunity

:18:18. > :18:20.becomes smaller. We just fedl may be bringing in some new blood `nd

:18:21. > :18:27.moving in another direction will reinvigorate a team. Time whll tell.

:18:28. > :18:43.A teenage climber from York has been selected to represent Great Britain

:18:44. > :18:49.Decent fightback by Yorkshire. A reasonable day. The Test match

:18:50. > :18:53.starts at Headingley on Friday and a good forecasts will get a lot of

:18:54. > :19:00.people down there. A teenage climber from York has been

:19:01. > :19:05.selected to represent Great Britain in this year's Para`climbing World

:19:06. > :19:06.Championships. 17`year`old Sharna Gallagher manages to fit

:19:07. > :19:08.five`days`a week of training And what makes her achievemdnts

:19:09. > :19:25.even more impressive is that Every beginner climate is t`ught the

:19:26. > :19:30.three points of contact ruld. Keep three limbs in contact with the wall

:19:31. > :19:36.at all times. But she breaks the rules every time she climbs. When I

:19:37. > :19:41.first started people were trying to help me climb. I just kind of

:19:42. > :19:47.moulded into my own way of climbing. I had to find for myself.

:19:48. > :19:57.It was hard for able`bodied people to teach me how to climb. It is

:19:58. > :20:03.amazing to watch the speed `nd skill with which she climbs this wall She

:20:04. > :20:14.is now in the top two in thd country and last week found out she had been

:20:15. > :20:16.select good for Team GB. Shd is very special. She is exceptionally

:20:17. > :20:22.determined. She never knows when to give up. She can train and just keep

:20:23. > :20:33.training. She does fatigue, but mentally she can keep wishing

:20:34. > :20:41.herself. It is great to watch and a pleasure to coach her. She hopes her

:20:42. > :20:42.success will inspire a new generation of disabled climbers to

:20:43. > :20:46.take up the sport. It is always hard for able`bodied people to coach kids

:20:47. > :20:48.with a disability. So if thdy can be taught by somebody with a dhsability

:20:49. > :20:55.it can be a massive motivator for them. Let them know they can achieve

:20:56. > :20:59.anything. They might not want to stick a climbing, but it cotld open

:21:00. > :21:06.their eyes to a lot more thhngs I do believe everyone can clilb. She

:21:07. > :21:12.will represent great Britain in the World Championships in Septdmber.

:21:13. > :21:17.It was the store that put B`rnsley on the fashion map.

:21:18. > :21:18.Pollyanna opened its doors in the 1960s.

:21:19. > :21:22.It was owned by Yorkshire style guru Rita Britton.

:21:23. > :21:25.Over Easter Rita suffered a stroke and now after almost 50 years in

:21:26. > :21:29.business she's made the difficult decision to close the shop.

:21:30. > :21:55.London, Paris, Milan and Barnsley. It is not about fashion, it is about

:21:56. > :21:59.style. That is what Rita Brhtton has been telling her customers. She

:22:00. > :22:03.brought designer to Barnslex when she opened a Pollyanna in the

:22:04. > :22:21.1960s. It became an institution here, but now the iconic store has

:22:22. > :22:30.closed it doors. I to do it as a new era. I had a wonderful mess`ge on my

:22:31. > :22:35.phone last night from a deshgner who said, you have got to bring in a new

:22:36. > :22:39.era. But obviously, it is ndarly 50 years and has been a massivd part of

:22:40. > :22:46.my life. In November I becale 7 and I always maintained age is not the

:22:47. > :22:55.problem. The deciding factor was a few weeks ago when I had a stroke.

:22:56. > :22:57.That was the deciding factor. You might not think of Barnsley as a

:22:58. > :22:59.fashion centre but for more than 45 years people came to Pollyanna to

:23:00. > :23:03.get these unique designer pheces they struggle to get anywhere else.

:23:04. > :23:11.It is so sad. It is an insthtution we are losing. It was the one place

:23:12. > :23:14.to get a designer label. It is hard to imagine what Barnsley is going to

:23:15. > :23:21.be like with out it because it has played such an important part. It
