:00:27. > :00:29.Exactly 40 years ago when this BBC documentary was made,

:00:30. > :00:32.one thousand people were behng killed every year in the workplace.

:00:33. > :00:35.That is when health and safdty regulations were brought in, making

:00:36. > :00:42.it a legal obligation for companies to protect their workforce.

:00:43. > :00:45.We are obliged to give them what we call PPE, which is protection, which

:00:46. > :00:48.is the footwear, high visibhlity vests, helmets and so forth.

:00:49. > :00:50.We have to take risk and hazard assessments as wdll

:00:51. > :00:56.So there is quite a bit involved in health and safety on the whole.

:00:57. > :00:59.But the building trade unions in Yorkshire say they are concerned

:01:00. > :01:01.that the government is trying to relax some of the rules,

:01:02. > :01:07.They have done away with the unannounced visits of the Health

:01:08. > :01:09.and Safety Executive to the sites, making it much more dangerots.

:01:10. > :01:13.The Health and Safety Executive has also had 35% of its budget cut,

:01:14. > :01:18.One Yorkshire Labour MP clahmed self`employed construction

:01:19. > :01:24.If a significant proportion of them have their protection

:01:25. > :01:27.removed, then we turn around the successes of the last

:01:28. > :01:33.decades since the introducthon of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

:01:34. > :01:35.On today's Sunday Politics, Conservative Alex Shelbrookd said

:01:36. > :01:39.there had to be a common sense approach.

:01:40. > :01:42.What we do have to be careftl about is looking at that

:01:43. > :01:45.legislation, to make sure that, let's say, some unscrupulous

:01:46. > :01:48.companies may make everybodx a contractor as self`employdd

:01:49. > :01:53.So I do agree that there needs to be some things that

:01:54. > :01:57.Back in 1974, health and safety laws were fiercely debated.

:01:58. > :02:06.Any changes 40 years later `re likely to provoke the same reaction.

:02:07. > :02:07.In other news, police say they believe

:02:08. > :02:10.the murder of a 23`year`old man in Sheffield was a targeted attack.

:02:11. > :02:12.Extra officers are patrolling the Manor area of the city.

:02:13. > :02:16.The man was found with gunshot wounds on Queen Mary Road in the

:02:17. > :02:22.He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

:02:23. > :02:24.He hasn't yet been formally identified but he's been naled

:02:25. > :02:33.The online fashion retailer ASOS says it hopes to be taking orders

:02:34. > :02:36.again in the next day or so following a serious fire

:02:37. > :02:38.at its distribution centre in Grimethorpe, near Barnsldy.

:02:39. > :02:40.The blaze, on Friday night, is being treated as arson.

:02:41. > :02:42.ASOS says it's relieved no`one was hurt and it's temporarily

:02:43. > :02:52.stopped taking orders to ensure customers aren't disappointdd.

:05:58. > :06:02.much of England and Wales. Maybe the odd shower drifting of the Nazi into

:06:03. > :06:10.East Anglia. Down towards the south coast and widespread blue skies are

:06:11. > :06:13.likely to be yours. Scotland should improve as the hours go by.

:06:14. > :06:17.Something you do need to bear in mind is the risk of some showers

:06:18. > :06:22.developing, heavy across eastern Scotland, southern and eastern

:06:23. > :06:30.England in the afternoon. They could be isolated but sharp if you're

:06:31. > :06:31.caught in them. Highs up to 25 or 26. Tuesday looks like there will
