:00:00. > :00:00.On the programme tonight: so it's goodbye from me
:00:00. > :00:08.Young Muslims in West Yorkshire are urged by their religious le`ders not
:00:09. > :00:14.We'll be talking to an imam about the conversation parents
:00:15. > :00:26.The heart`breaking video messages recorded by the father from Barnsley
:00:27. > :00:29.who won't live to see his daughter grow up.
:00:30. > :00:31.It's something I wanted to do for George,
:00:32. > :00:34.just so that she's got some memories of who I was and just have some of
:00:35. > :00:37.those conversations that a normal dad would have with their d`ughter.
:00:38. > :00:41.A new exhibition in Leeds features photos
:00:42. > :00:56.You can see the rain clouds building across Yorkshire. What is it looking
:00:57. > :01:03.like for tomorrow? Join me later in the programme.
:01:04. > :01:05.Good evening and welcome to Friday's Look North.
:01:06. > :01:08.Young Muslims in Yorkshire `re being urged by their religious le`ders not
:01:09. > :01:15.The holy month of Ramadan begins this weekdnd, and
:01:16. > :01:18.there are fears that it could spark an increase in young men tr`velling
:01:19. > :01:33.The BBC Asian Network's Shabnam Mahmood has more.
:01:34. > :01:38.It is a message that is being put out in mosques are crossed
:01:39. > :01:46.Yorkshire: Don't be tempted to join the fighting in Syria. What we are
:01:47. > :01:52.saying, is that if you want to help please do not go out there. Don t
:01:53. > :01:57.expose yourself. Don't put xour lives at risk. This is the reason
:01:58. > :02:02.why they are so worried. So`called recruitment videos on the Internet
:02:03. > :02:05.and TV channels, in which British Muslims are allegedly fighthng in
:02:06. > :02:12.Syria and urging others to join them. It comes at a particularly
:02:13. > :02:18.sensitive time. This weekend sees the start of Ramadan, the holiest
:02:19. > :02:29.month of the Muslim calendar when leaders observe fasting. Many fear
:02:30. > :02:38.it could spark people listening to these videos. Just what do they
:02:39. > :02:46.think about British fighting in Syria? I think instead of going out
:02:47. > :02:51.to fight, it is better for ts to celebrate peace instead of fighting
:02:52. > :02:56.violence with violence. I al a mother of a teenage son mysdlf, and
:02:57. > :03:01.it is not a worry for me whdn he is going to be poached as one of the
:03:02. > :03:07.candidates, my worry is mord about his education or whether he will be
:03:08. > :03:10.joining groups. There is a lot that Muslims could do here in England to
:03:11. > :03:16.help the people in Syria and there are so many other ways of doing it
:03:17. > :03:20.than going over there and fhghting. Muslims who want to help people in
:03:21. > :03:26.Syria are being encouraged to donate agencies working in the reghon.
:03:27. > :03:30.Security experts say that 500 Britons may be fighting in Syria.
:03:31. > :03:34.Police say those who do risk being arrested when they return.
:03:35. > :03:41.Well, Carry Asim is from thd Leeds Makkah Mosque and he joins ts now.
:03:42. > :03:47.We know about the issues th`t are happening in Cardiff at the moment
:03:48. > :03:52.with young men going out to Syria. How concerned are you that xoung men
:03:53. > :03:57.from Yorkshire are going to join the conflict? I think there is generally
:03:58. > :04:03.be concerned that in the month of Ramadan, the month of sympathy and
:04:04. > :04:06.empathy of suffering. As a result, some might be thinking about going
:04:07. > :04:13.to Syria to take part in thd fight. Our message is very simple. Please
:04:14. > :04:19.do not do it. Don't expose xourself, don't put your lives at risk. Do you
:04:20. > :04:23.know of any young men who h`ve gone out from Yorkshire? I don't. We find
:04:24. > :04:28.mostly that radicalisation takes place underground. It's rard that a
:04:29. > :04:40.message club like that comes from a mosque. Can you what can yot say to
:04:41. > :04:48.parents whose sons might be thinking about going out? Obviously this is a
:04:49. > :04:53.very hard thing to discern. We are not saying that there should be a
:04:54. > :04:58.suspect in culture amongst parents and children, it's more abott making
:04:59. > :05:05.sure that no one puts his or her life at risk. Is there a message
:05:06. > :05:11.there to be careful what yot are actually giving to as well, like you
:05:12. > :05:17.might be giving to a charitx or a cause in Syria? We are saying
:05:18. > :05:23.humanitarian aid is very important and fun rating should carry on but
:05:24. > :05:30.please use established charhties `` fund raising. Would it be wrong for
:05:31. > :05:34.parents to sit down with thdir children now and have that
:05:35. > :05:38.conversation with them? No, absolutely. I think that
:05:39. > :05:42.conversation should take pl`ce. On breakfast tables, on dinner tables,
:05:43. > :05:48.we should be open about it. How can we reach a in amicable political
:05:49. > :05:51.solution to this crisis. Th`nk you for joining us.
:05:52. > :05:54.Every parent dreads the thotght of not seeing their child grow up

:06:08. > :06:11.He finds everyday jobs, more difficult to do.
:06:12. > :06:15.Despite this, he says it is important to remain
:06:16. > :06:17.positive and campaign for awareness and research into the disease.
:06:18. > :06:26.For any parent time spent whth their child is precious.
:06:27. > :06:29.But when time is in short supply it really has to count.
:06:30. > :06:32.Ian Pratt is slowly dying from Motor Neuron Disease.
:06:33. > :06:35.So his young daughter can one day remember him he has started
:06:36. > :06:41.It was something I just wanted to do for George so she had
:06:42. > :06:46.Just some of those conversations that a normal
:06:47. > :06:51.What sorts of things have you chosen to include in those messages?
:06:52. > :06:54.We had a talk about boys, about what she needs to do
:06:55. > :07:00.I want her to be able to cole and talk to her mum if she dver
:07:01. > :07:04.wants to and not feel that we are here to judge her, that we `re here
:07:05. > :07:11.I guess if she ever wanted to one day she could put the play button
:07:12. > :07:20.It's not the same but it's the best I can offdr.
:07:21. > :07:23.Ian was only diagnosed in Sdptember 2012 and has been told his disease
:07:24. > :07:26.is progressing slowly, but `lready he can't walk a great distance and
:07:27. > :07:37.They claim it to be rare, there are about 5000 people in the UK with it.
:07:38. > :07:41.I guess on a population bashs it is rare, but when you look at the
:07:42. > :07:46.number of people who die evdry day, five people die from this dhsease
:07:47. > :07:50.You are looking at one out of 275 people.
:07:51. > :07:57.When I'm slurring I'm not drunk or when I fall I'm not drunk, it's
:07:58. > :08:03.Yes they are making lots of inroads and yes they havd found
:08:04. > :08:05.lots of things, but we are still no closer to having
:08:06. > :08:14.a drug that slows it or stops it or even reverses the condition.
:08:15. > :08:18.Ian knows that his reliance on others will gradually increase,
:08:19. > :08:22.until the day even those closest to him can do no more.
:08:23. > :08:26.While he can it's time to m`ke and leave memories.
:08:27. > :08:28.It's not going anywhere so H've always been positive.
:08:29. > :08:32.As I said, I need to make stre I've got two options, I can sit

:20:58. > :21:03.Unbelievably excited. I'm a bit sick of seeing him, let's get hil out the
:21:04. > :21:10.way. This man has Uni cycled his way here. How was that? It was hard It
:21:11. > :21:18.was enjoyable even in this weather. It's great to see so many pdople out
:21:19. > :21:25.cycling. Even people on tandems and weird contraptions. It's bedn really
:21:26. > :21:30.fun. Congratulations, you dhd it quicker on a unicycle than H did on
:21:31. > :21:36.my proper bike. How successful has this been? It has been absolutely

:22:04. > :22:07.is serious about his cycling. Let's keep on with bikes because we have
:22:08. > :22:10.been talking about it. You can probably remember learning to write

:22:44. > :22:51.send in photos from their cycling past and a selection
:22:52. > :22:56.was made by photographer Casey Orr. So this was taken in the 1940s and
:22:57. > :23:02.this is a Yorkshire cycling club. I feel a real responsibilitx to
:23:03. > :23:04.the people of Leeds. You know,
:23:05. > :23:08.through the old photographs, Casey also embarked on a series
:23:09. > :23:16.of modern portraits The result is diverse
:23:17. > :23:26.but also joyously unifying. The exhibition is enhanced
:23:27. > :23:37.by a soundtrack and films. The bicycle is this wonderftlly
:23:38. > :23:43.democratic, perfect machine. It's just this lovely cheap thing
