:00:00. > :00:00.weather. Not a wash-out but stay tuned for the details.

:00:00. > :00:24.It's made me reconsider whether there it is time to find another

:00:25. > :00:25.job. We hear from both sides

:00:26. > :00:28.in the debate over public sector pay The Queen is presented with

:00:29. > :00:33.a hamper of Derbyshire produce as crowds turn out to welcome

:00:34. > :00:45.Her Majesty to the county. This is something I'm told is called

:00:46. > :00:51.Peg agility and I'm told I will have to have a go at it before the end of

:00:52. > :00:55.the show. Join us later. It has been a glorious day but spare

:00:56. > :00:57.a thought for the course where it has been wet and windy. The forecast

:00:58. > :01:08.later. Good evening and welcome

:01:09. > :01:10.to Thursday's Look North. There's been disruption

:01:11. > :01:11.across Yorkshire today. According to unions,

:01:12. > :01:13.around 100,000 public sector workers walked out on strike in

:01:14. > :01:16.a dispute over pay and conditions. Dinner ladies, refuse collectors,

:01:17. > :01:19.librarians, firefighters The biggest disruption has been

:01:20. > :01:26.to schools as hundreds were In North Yorkshire 88 schools

:01:27. > :01:32.were closed or partially closed. And in West Yorkshire 390

:01:33. > :01:36.schools had to close. Well, in a moment we'll hear the

:01:37. > :01:40.views from a union representative and a Conservative MP, but first

:01:41. > :01:53.Cathy Killick has our top story. Marching outside the town hall in

:01:54. > :01:59.Sheffield, there was no messing this thousands strong rally. Around half

:02:00. > :02:02.a dozen public sector unions took part, there were similar scenes in

:02:03. > :02:06.Leeds. This is just one of the rallies

:02:07. > :02:10.taking place across the region, the message very clear. These employees

:02:11. > :02:16.have had enough of the cuts. Government remains committed to

:02:17. > :02:21.austerity and maintains that the strike is causing little disruption.

:02:22. > :02:25.The abandoned bin lorries told a different story. This depot would

:02:26. > :02:30.normally be empty with all the lorries on their rounds, not today.

:02:31. > :02:35.Firefighters were also on strike, angry at changes to pensions. Dozens

:02:36. > :02:40.of leisure centres were closed or offering limited services. Hundreds

:02:41. > :02:45.of schools closed their doors. Teachers and support staff refused

:02:46. > :02:52.to work. Typing struggling as it is. I work

:02:53. > :02:55.for 39 hours a week. I'm here to support everybody else and I think

:02:56. > :03:00.we deserved the pay rise. We are just keeping head above

:03:01. > :03:04.water, to be honest. With the cuts it will be very

:03:05. > :03:11.difficult. Everything is going up but wages are. It is plain to see by

:03:12. > :03:15.anybody that we need a pay rise. Do the strikers have the support of

:03:16. > :03:19.the Yorkshire public? That depends who you talk to.

:03:20. > :03:25.I got sympathy with them but I think when they are in a job like that

:03:26. > :03:30.they do have responsibility to the public so, I'm sorry, I'm not in

:03:31. > :03:34.full agreement with the strike. For me, it is the inconvenience of

:03:35. > :03:39.it because I got a child that is in school that has to take the day of

:03:40. > :03:43.today. Apart from that I am for it. People should get a decent wage.

:03:44. > :03:46.The government have missed the government have missed about enough

:03:47. > :03:50.with peoples pensions. We work all our lives for it. You will get there

:03:51. > :03:55.is, huge pensions, but not these people.

:03:56. > :03:59.This is the unions, let's be honest. Whenever you go they want more for

:04:00. > :04:06.the workers, understandably, but it disrupts everybody else.

:04:07. > :04:11.Once it notes to the day, despite their teacher's absence, these

:04:12. > :04:15.children from Seacroft who have 100% attendance records got their

:04:16. > :04:17.promised trip to a way of life Park, taken by the headteacher who

:04:18. > :04:29.couldn't let them down. Well,

:04:30. > :04:31.joining us now are Alec Shelbrooke, the Conservative MP for Rothwell and

:04:32. > :04:49.Elmet, and Chris Jenkinson, Unison's At 29% turnout, does that give a

:04:50. > :04:52.fair representation of what workers want?

:04:53. > :04:58.I don't recognise those figures. The turnout has been fantastic. We think

:04:59. > :06:26.150,000 public sector workers have been on strike today.

:06:27. > :06:31.in industrial action is why it is being done. This is a political

:06:32. > :06:35.strike, nothing more, nothing less. Even the fact that ?23 million has

:06:36. > :06:43.been donated to the Labour Party, even though that Ed Miliband has

:06:44. > :06:47.said these strikes were wrong. People in the private sector has

:06:48. > :06:50.seen not just pay freezes but pay cuts. I have had lots of

:06:51. > :06:55.correspondence today from people complaining about the strikes

:06:56. > :06:59.because even though it has a 1% pay rise which in real terms as a pay

:07:00. > :07:07.cut, that is the situation this country has found itself in after a

:07:08. > :07:12.disastrous time for the economy. You are still on a final salary

:07:13. > :07:18.scheme. You are not leading by example, are you?

:07:19. > :07:21.I completely understand that and pension scheme is changing in next

:07:22. > :07:28.Parliament. But why not lead on that.

:07:29. > :07:32.It is being done. It will be the same as the rest of the public

:07:33. > :07:36.sector pension scheme so that is happening. The fact of the matter is

:07:37. > :07:39.that we talk about pension schemes in the public sector. These are

:07:40. > :07:45.still excellent schemes when we put them into context. There are many

:07:46. > :07:50.people working in that area and 24 million people who are not. What

:07:51. > :07:58.particularly distresses me is the attitude of the NUT compared to the

:07:59. > :08:09.NUS you'd be other union 's. It is upsetting to see members of one

:08:10. > :08:15.union beating the others. `` goading the others. There are plenty of

:08:16. > :08:19.people out there who have lost a day's pay and they cannot dream of

:08:20. > :08:22.having pay and pensions of that nature.

:08:23. > :08:25.Briefly, are we likely to see a repeat of this action?

:08:26. > :08:30.We are going to think about that but what we're saying is that we want

:08:31. > :08:35.employers to come round the table and negotiate with us, with ACAS if

:08:36. > :08:36.necessary, and we do not want the public disrupted anymore than they

:08:37. > :08:42.have to be. Police have arrested a man

:08:43. > :08:45.on suspicion of the murder of a 23`year`old woman who went

:08:46. > :08:48.missing in Leeds 14 years ago. Gemma Simpson was catching a bus

:08:49. > :08:50.from Harehills when she disappeared. A man was arrested in Scarborough

:08:51. > :08:52.on Tuesday evening. Our Crime Correspondent John Cundy

:08:53. > :08:54.has the story. Gemma Simpson from the Harehills

:08:55. > :08:57.district of Leeds vanished on May 3, It's believed she told

:08:58. > :09:03.a friend she was catching a bus to Leeds city centre

:09:04. > :09:06.and was going on to Huddersfield. Two days ago,

:09:07. > :09:08.a man was arrested in Scarborough in It is understood the 44`year`old man

:09:09. > :09:13.had handed himself in at Scarborough Police have thoroughly searched

:09:14. > :09:19.the arrested man's home Here in St Leonard's Crescent in the

:09:20. > :09:23.Barrowcliff district of Scarborough. They have since boarded it up

:09:24. > :09:25.while the man him self has been taken back to Leeds

:09:26. > :09:29.for questioning by detectives. Next`door neighbour Michael says

:09:30. > :09:33.the man, a taxi driver, had lived You only saw him on a night`time

:09:34. > :09:41.when he went to work in his taxi. He used to start at nine

:09:42. > :09:44.at night and come in As news spread of the arrest,

:09:45. > :09:48.police say Gemma's family have been Further news is expected soon,

:09:49. > :09:56.meanwhile, the house that may provide vital clues to the

:09:57. > :10:00.disappearance of Gemma 14 years ago Hundreds gather in York to mark 70

:10:01. > :10:14.years since the battle in India The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh

:10:15. > :10:23.have been visiting Chatsworth House It was their first visit to the

:10:24. > :10:28.Stately Home for over ten years. They were greeted by the Duke

:10:29. > :10:31.and Duchess of Devonshire The Queen arrived at Chatsworth to

:10:32. > :10:41.be greeted by sunshine and crowds. Dressed in summary blue

:10:42. > :10:43.and carrying pink roses, she was accompanied by Prince Philip

:10:44. > :10:45.and the Duke of Devonshire. One of the first things to catch

:10:46. > :10:50.her eye was a hamper of food. It was fantastic and showcased

:10:51. > :10:55.what we do, our local produce. To be able to show

:10:56. > :10:57.the Queen that this was She asked the question if she could

:10:58. > :11:04.fit it in her helicopter to take There were private presentations

:11:05. > :11:09.including Ken Sloan, the dog handler with the

:11:10. > :11:13.Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team. It really does mean a lot

:11:14. > :11:18.because all the long, long years that most people do, they don't get

:11:19. > :11:25.to see anybody like the Queen. And, as ever, there were also

:11:26. > :11:29.plenty of well`wishers. I've never seen the Queen before so

:11:30. > :11:34.it has been a real life experience. She is smaller than I

:11:35. > :11:37.thought she would be. I live in Sheffield but last time I

:11:38. > :11:40.met the Queen was in I just went to catch a train

:11:41. > :11:47.and the Queen happened to be there that day and I didn't have any

:11:48. > :11:50.flowers to give her so I thought She left as she arrived,

:11:51. > :11:54.in glorious sunshine, No`one is telling

:11:55. > :12:00.whether she managed to sneak In other news now,

:12:01. > :12:14.and there's been a call in the House of Commons for the man responsible

:12:15. > :12:17.for the Grand Depart in Yorkshire to The Shipley MP said that the head

:12:18. > :12:21.of the county's tourist organisation, Welcome to Yorkshire,

:12:22. > :12:23.should be made a Sir. The Commons leader described

:12:24. > :12:38.the suggestion He should be recognised perhaps with

:12:39. > :12:42.a knighthood. The Prime Minister has came the coming to listen to my

:12:43. > :12:50.message and hopefully he will have that message ringing in his ears.

:12:51. > :12:52.Congratulations to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which has been

:12:53. > :12:56.The open`air gallery near Wakefield won the ?100,000 Art Fund Prize

:12:57. > :13:00.It was hailed by judges as a "truly outstanding museum with a

:13:01. > :13:06.Last year was the park's busiest ever, with 350,000 visitors.

:13:07. > :13:09.Hundreds have gathered in York today to mark 70 years since the Battle

:13:10. > :13:14.Many of the troops who fought and died were based in York and

:13:15. > :13:17.it's where a museum commemorating their sacrifice is housed.

:13:18. > :13:20.British and Indian forces won the battle against the Japanese

:13:21. > :13:26.But it was a turning point in Second World War in the Far East.

:13:27. > :13:37.Olivia Richwald reports now from today's moving ceremony.

:13:38. > :13:45.It was a battle on a remote mountain ridge in a far`flung corner of the

:13:46. > :13:52.world 70 years ago but the memories of the Battle of call him a ``

:13:53. > :13:59.Battle of Kohima our Tour offer made to describe. `` are too rugged for

:14:00. > :14:14.many to describe. The battle was a decisive Allied

:14:15. > :14:17.victory. The Japanese were prevented from invading India but the

:14:18. > :14:24.conditions for the soldiers were horrendous. Fought over maintenance,

:14:25. > :14:28.and jungles, through monsoons, heat, starvation and disease.

:14:29. > :14:38.11,000 people died. We got to the top of big Alice in hell and it was

:14:39. > :14:50.shelled to PCs. Dead bodies lying everywhere. It was terrible.

:14:51. > :14:54.70 years on, there are just a few veterans left who are able to come

:14:55. > :15:00.to the service and that makes their memories even more precious. Today,

:15:01. > :15:04.each of them led a region in memory of lost friends.

:15:05. > :15:12.I've been here many years before but today a special as the 70th year and

:15:13. > :15:21.it will probably be my last. One of the best services there have

:15:22. > :15:27.been. It's very emotional. A museum dedicated to the battle is

:15:28. > :15:33.raised at the barracks. In education trust is based in India and aims to

:15:34. > :15:37.repay the debt owed by Britain to the people of India who helped drive

:15:38. > :15:50.back the Japanese and when the Second World War.

:15:51. > :15:53.Making cycling safer ` the legacy of Le Grand Depart which should make

:15:54. > :15:58.And trying not to make a pig's ear of it ` the rather

:15:59. > :16:02.bizarre animal contest in the ring at the Great Yorkshire Show.

:16:03. > :16:04.A Leeds schoolgirl is today celebrating the 5th anniversary

:16:05. > :16:07.of the heart transplant that saved her life.

:16:08. > :16:10.Gabrysia Filarowski from Horsforth was born with a rare heart defect.

:16:11. > :16:15.As a baby she was put at the top of the UK transplant list.

:16:16. > :16:21.Now she's a happy and healthy six`year`old.

:16:22. > :16:34.Dancing and dressing up are her hobbies.

:16:35. > :16:36.She's like any other six`year`old girl.

:16:37. > :16:42.But Gabrysia Filarowski from Horsforth has a remarkable story.

:16:43. > :16:46.As a baby she went straight to the top of the UK transplant list.

:16:47. > :16:50.Born with a rare heart condition, doctors feared she had just months

:16:51. > :16:55.In 2009, I filmed Gabrysia and her family at

:16:56. > :17:02.the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle as they went through agonising tests.

:17:03. > :17:05.There always seems to be a setback somewhere.

:17:06. > :17:10.We've always encountered another brick wall.

:17:11. > :17:14.That may continue but that has been the most difficult thing.

:17:15. > :17:17.We have learned not to expect the best because the disappointment

:17:18. > :17:24.And then when she was just 16 months old, Gabrysia received

:17:25. > :17:30.Today, she is back at the Freeman Hospital as she celebrates

:17:31. > :17:35.the fifth anniversary of the operation that saved her life.

:17:36. > :17:39.Gabrysia is here for a checkup and her first television interview.

:17:40. > :17:47.I was born with half a heart and I spent a long time in hospital.

:17:48. > :17:55.Doctors had to take out my poorly heart and give me a new one.

:17:56. > :17:57.Five years further on, we've got a child that learns

:17:58. > :17:59.like every normal child and has wonderful relationships with

:18:00. > :18:05.other children in her class, does everything they can do.

:18:06. > :18:08.It just brings us so much joy, something we'd never thought we'd

:18:09. > :18:16.Hospital checkups are now a world away from the checkups

:18:17. > :18:30.We lived hour by hour, day by day, and we saw children that had been

:18:31. > :18:33.transplanted that were about the age Gabrysia is now and would never dare

:18:34. > :18:38.Some people comment, you have to go all the way to

:18:39. > :18:44.Newcastle, that's such a long way, but it doesn't feel like that to us

:18:45. > :18:54.There is always the risk of her body rejecting the new heart.

:18:55. > :19:00.Gabrysia will need medication for the rest of her life.

:19:01. > :19:23.But this girl doesn't let anything hold her back.

:19:24. > :19:26.Yorkshire's County Championship match at home to Durham has ended

:19:27. > :19:29.But Yorkshire stay on top of the table.

:19:30. > :19:31.The visitors dug in for most of the final day.

:19:32. > :19:34.They were following on in reply to Yorkshire's first

:19:35. > :19:37.Adam Lyth's two wickets early in Durham's second innings gave

:19:38. > :19:43.But Durham managed to hang on in the final session, with two

:19:44. > :19:52.The Grand Depart has been and gone, but building work on one

:19:53. > :19:54.of the Tour de France's biggest legacy projects should get underway

:19:55. > :20:02.A 14 mile cycle superhighway will be built between Seacroft in East Leeds

:20:03. > :20:06.and Bradford city centre at a cost of ?29 million.

:20:07. > :20:20.A cycle lane completely segregated from other vehicles. This one is in

:20:21. > :20:23.Amsterdam in the Netherlands but something very similar is coming to

:20:24. > :20:26.west Yorkshire. Potential users have been getting

:20:27. > :20:33.the chance to see detailed plans for what is known as the city connect

:20:34. > :20:38.cycle superhighway. Currently on this road, cyclists are

:20:39. > :20:42.on the main highway. Once the cycle superhighway is complete, they will

:20:43. > :20:46.be away from the traffic and have their own dedicated route which is

:20:47. > :20:49.far safer. The 14 mile long highway will

:20:50. > :20:55.replace narrow by claims like this one the A64 which are seen as

:20:56. > :20:58.potentially dangerous and confusing. It will run from Seacroft to

:20:59. > :21:04.Bradford. This will get the Dutch style

:21:05. > :21:09.treatment. Currently, cyclists have to share space with other motorists.

:21:10. > :21:14.When the highway is complete, cyclists will get their own lane

:21:15. > :21:19.that cars, lorries and buses cannot stray into. The aim is to get more

:21:20. > :21:24.people cycling by making cycling safer. The government is pitching in

:21:25. > :21:30.with the rest of the money coming from Leeds and Bradford Council 's.

:21:31. > :21:33.At the moment, it can feel threatening sharing with vehicles.

:21:34. > :21:38.If you are on a separate cycle path, you know you won't be passed to

:21:39. > :21:43.closely and it gives you confidence. You see all kinds of rubbish cycling

:21:44. > :21:49.infrastructure when there was no thought for mass cycling. Now we are

:21:50. > :21:57.thinking we want ten or 20% of journeys to be made by Blake and we

:21:58. > :22:00.have to plan for that. This is totally different to what

:22:01. > :22:06.came before. It is addressing needs of cyclists. This will make a

:22:07. > :22:11.difference because people will feel safer and it will be safer to cycle

:22:12. > :22:15.on the road. It is a springboard for major change.

:22:16. > :22:18.As part of the scheme, the canal towpath between Leeds and Shipley

:22:19. > :22:23.will also be upgraded to make it smoother for cyclists. The

:22:24. > :22:24.consultation runs until the end of July and building work should start

:22:25. > :22:29.in the autumn. Today was the third and final day

:22:30. > :22:33.of the Great Yorkshire Show and didn't the weather play ball

:22:34. > :22:36.for the thousands of visitors who Over in the pig ring there was

:22:37. > :22:40.a special event drawing We sent Ian White to put his pig

:22:41. > :22:59.handling skills to the test. Forget one man and his dog, this is

:23:00. > :23:08.one man and his peg and I am not telling you porkies. `` pig. I have

:23:09. > :23:15.been roped into this so what I'm letting myself in for?

:23:16. > :23:20.It is all about getting a pig to go and take yourself where you wanted

:23:21. > :23:24.to go. It is not about the pig, it is about handler using the bat and

:23:25. > :23:31.the board to steer it round the course in the prescribed manner,

:23:32. > :23:34.nice and gently, and we do it on a time trial.

:23:35. > :23:38.Why do I get the feeling this is not going to be easy? And hundreds of

:23:39. > :23:57.people are looking on as well. It is the epitome of his career at

:23:58. > :24:07.the end of it, one of the two. That'll do.

:24:08. > :24:24.Use it like a brother. `` rider

:24:25. > :24:27.very good. She should come back and do it every

:24:28. > :24:57.year. I would say that as a career`high.

:24:58. > :26:39.I think he has found his place in life, don't you?

:26:40. > :26:48.Dry and bright in the West, further eastwards patchy rain first thing.

:26:49. > :26:53.That might get into Sheffield but only a few spots. The afternoon is

:26:54. > :26:58.dry and bright everywhere with sunny spells coming through. Lots of cloud

:26:59. > :27:09.around but it should brighten through the course of the day. A

:27:10. > :27:15.better day in Scarborough. The weekend is not looking too bad. Warm

:27:16. > :27:21.sunshine on Saturday with the rest of 12 heavy showers late in the day.

:27:22. > :27:26.The rest of Sunday should be bright with sunshine and one or two

:27:27. > :27:32.showers. Monday should be a fine start with patchy rain later.

:27:33. > :27:38.That's not a bad forecast for you. That's not a bad forecast

:27:39. > :27:54.Let's hope it is right. I shall be back at 10:25pm. Goodbye.
