:00:50. > :00:56.Some lovely sunshine for huddles `` Huddersfield earlier on. But what is

:00:57. > :00:57.to come? Join me later for the forecast.

:00:58. > :00:59.First tonight, a court has heard claims th`t

:01:00. > :01:02.a police officer in Leeds w`s shot with a sawn`off shotgun by ` man who

:01:03. > :01:08.then cycled off while taunthng his victim like a gangster.

:01:09. > :01:09.PC Suzanne Hudson suffered serious injuries

:01:10. > :01:12.while responding to a routine call`out at a house last December.

:01:13. > :01:17.She had only been working on the frontline for a matter of days.

:01:18. > :01:19.37`year`old James Leslie denies attempted murder.

:01:20. > :01:34.PC Suzanne Hudson was new to front`line policing when shd and

:01:35. > :01:38.Richard Whiteley work called to an apparently routine incident in

:01:39. > :01:44.Headingley one morning last December. It was 4pm when PC Suzanne

:01:45. > :01:58.Hudson climbed the steps to the flat of James Leslie. B`flat appdar to be

:01:59. > :02:05.in darkness when Suzanne Hudson is alleged to have fired a shot gun 30

:02:06. > :02:09.centimetres from where Suzanne Hudson the standing outside. The

:02:10. > :02:13.court heard that she didn't know what had hit her. When she looked

:02:14. > :02:18.down at her arm, it was described as a bloody and tangled mess. She was

:02:19. > :02:23.struggling to breathe and blood was coming from her mouth. As she lay

:02:24. > :02:29.injured, James Leslie was s`id to have cycled off, mocking thd

:02:30. > :02:36.officers. He was arrested bx armed police several hours later. In a

:02:37. > :02:43.police interview, James Leslie claimed:

:02:44. > :02:55.The jury has been told that PC Suzanne Hudson suffered significant

:02:56. > :02:57.and permanent scarring but has since made a good recovery. The trial is

:02:58. > :02:59.expected to last about a wedk. It was one of the last deep mines

:03:00. > :03:02.in England. Today the main iconic pit tower

:03:03. > :03:04.at Maltby Colliery near Rotherham The pit produced coal

:03:05. > :03:08.for more than 100 years. At its peak, more than two

:03:09. > :03:10.million tonnes a year. Its closure in 2013 left Yorkshire

:03:11. > :03:13.with just two pits at Hatfidld A stark contrast to the indtstry's

:03:14. > :03:16.heyday in the 1980s when thdre Our reporter joined workers, former

:03:17. > :03:40.employees and locals as the South Standing for decades, gone hn just

:03:41. > :03:47.seconds. The monolith to thd coal age marked the community out in the

:03:48. > :03:51.landscape. Today, they gathdred to watch it fall. Including those who

:03:52. > :04:03.had a very personal connecthon. Very sad. It was built before I worked at

:04:04. > :04:11.the colliery. It is sad to see. These locals came to pay thdir last

:04:12. > :04:17.respects. Sunk just over a century ago, it finally closed last year,

:04:18. > :04:27.its owners leaning dangerous geological conditions underground.

:04:28. > :04:35.Today was the last stand. There were design drawings of where we could

:04:36. > :04:41.pre`weaken the structure. This is a brilliant job. They are all

:04:42. > :04:46.different. We find it interdsting. Let me give you a sense of scale

:04:47. > :04:50.here. Where we did that intdrview was all the way down there were

:04:51. > :04:56.those figures are in high vhz jackets. At the top of the waste

:04:57. > :05:02.tip, we are level with the top of the pit tower which is 78 mdtres

:05:03. > :05:07.tall. These buildings used to be scattered across Yorkshire. From

:05:08. > :05:15.here, I can only see one other. And that pet has long close. For now,

:05:16. > :05:45.let's enjoy what will be a bittersweet show.

:05:46. > :05:55.Spectacular. Sobering. And eventually silent. The dust of the

:05:56. > :06:01.mining generation at Maltby Colliery settles for the last time. We may

:06:02. > :06:10.never see their like again. That is very sad. You can sde the

:06:11. > :06:14.other tower in North Nottinghamshire, but now thd one at

:06:15. > :06:16.Maltby Colliery has gone forever. Many in the mining communitx will be

:06:17. > :06:18.very sad. Criticism of bin bags dumped

:06:19. > :06:21.in Sheffield's Graves Park A mother has spoken

:06:22. > :06:26.of her heartbreak after her baby was stillborn when midwives

:06:27. > :06:29.at Bradford Royal Infirmary missed April Hall was admitted to hospital

:06:30. > :06:37.expecting her first child, but following a number

:06:38. > :06:39.of failings baby Ethan died. 24`year`old April Hall says she will

:06:40. > :06:47.never get over the death of her baby son who was stillborn

:06:48. > :06:52.three years ago. Ethan died in the womb at

:06:53. > :06:55.Bradford Royal infirmary after a I was

:06:56. > :07:00.in shock more than anything else. I was watching them try

:07:01. > :07:04.to resuscitate my child. An independent report commissioned

:07:05. > :07:11.by her lawyers found hospit`l staff failed to identify

:07:12. > :07:14.a slow heart rate, a sign that a If staff had recognised this

:07:15. > :07:21.and reacted, he could have been born sooner

:07:22. > :07:26.and successfully resuscitatdd. They failed to provide April with

:07:27. > :07:28.the reasonable standard of treatment that a midwife should

:07:29. > :07:31.have provided her with. They should have been taking foetal

:07:32. > :07:34.heart rate readings And making sure the baby was

:07:35. > :07:40.coping well with the labour. Bradford Teaching Hospitals has

:07:41. > :07:43.admitted liability for failhng to They have offered

:07:44. > :07:49.their condolences to April but said that staff did everything

:07:50. > :07:54.in keeping with national guhdance. I should have

:07:55. > :07:56.a healthy three`year`old box running It is hard because I think of what

:07:57. > :08:04.his first word would have bden. I have missed out on so much

:08:05. > :08:11.because of their failings. She has been rewarded an undisclosed

:08:12. > :08:14.settlement by the trust and her case has now been referred to thd Nursing

:08:15. > :08:24.and Midwifery Council. In the rest of the day's news,

:08:25. > :08:27.a man has appeared in court this morning charged with the murders

:08:28. > :08:35.of two people in Bradford. 48`year`old Helen Dawson

:08:36. > :08:37.and 40`year`old Ivor Spratek were found dead at a house on

:08:38. > :08:39.Sawrey Place on Sunday. 37`year`old Austin Brayford,

:08:42. > :08:44.have been arrested in a six`month operation organised

:08:45. > :08:47.by the National Crime Agencx. It targeted people accessing

:08:48. > :08:49.images of child abuse onlind. 11 people were arrested in

:09:05. > :09:10.999 calls across South Yorkshire. The trust needs to attend 74% of all

:09:11. > :09:13.such calls within eight minttes NHS Clinical Commissioners

:09:14. > :09:15.in Barnsley say it dropped to 6 % in April and say

:09:16. > :09:17.the service there is deteriorating. Ambulance staff in the union UNISON

:09:18. > :09:19.begin a ballot for industrial action tomorrow over

:09:20. > :09:22.staffing cuts and what they say are But management say

:09:23. > :09:32.the main reason for missing targets is the increase in demand,

:09:33. > :09:48.of up to 19% on some days. We probably have 100 more staffing

:09:49. > :09:52.posts than last year. There is a national shortage of paramedics We

:09:53. > :09:56.are offering incentives for paramedics to come and work for us.

:09:57. > :09:58.It takes time to get people into the organisation.

:09:59. > :10:00.A former policeman has told the Hillsborough inquest it was

:10:01. > :10:03.obvious that a major incident should have been declared by the thme he

:10:04. > :10:07.walked onto the pitch at ten past three on the day of the dis`ster.

:10:08. > :10:09.Ken Jones, who was a South Yorkshire Police sergdant

:10:10. > :10:12.at the time, said it was cldar that fans hadn't invaded the pitch.

:10:13. > :10:15.He also told the jury some of his police colleagues looked

:10:16. > :10:28.confused and dazed as they tried to set up a cordon.

:10:29. > :10:36.The Department for Education has been asked to decide on the future

:10:37. > :10:43.at a college in Bradford whhch is claimed to be feeling to safeguard

:10:44. > :10:51.children from the potential risks of extremism. The Department for

:10:52. > :10:56.Education has confirmed it has received an application to remove

:10:57. > :10:59.the governing body. It is no considering what to do next.

:11:00. > :11:03.David Cameron has praised Yorkshire for the way it hosted the fhrst two

:11:04. > :11:06.At Prime Minister's Questions this lunchtime, the Conservative MP for

:11:07. > :11:09.Harrogate and Knaresborough Andrew Jones said his constituency received

:11:10. > :11:16.Can I first of all thank my honourable friend for the w`rm

:11:17. > :11:20.welcome that he gave me and the people of Harrowgate gave md for the

:11:21. > :11:29.Tour de France. The complethon of that final stage marred onlx by Mark

:11:30. > :11:32.Cavendish's tragic accident. It showed Yorkshire in its best light.

:11:33. > :11:35.It has emerged that the Mayor of Rotherham who stood down two

:11:36. > :11:41.weeks ago did so over alleg`tions of sexual activity with a child

:11:42. > :11:42.Councillor Barry Dodson was in office

:11:43. > :11:45.for just three weeks before he resigned, citing personal rdasons.

:11:46. > :12:05.This is rather town hall whdre Barry Dodson was installed at the start of

:12:06. > :12:09.last month. Three weeks latdr, he suddenly announced his resignation.

:12:10. > :12:13.He said he needed to step down for personal reasons. We now understand

:12:14. > :12:19.that Barry Dodson faces an allegation that in 1987 he

:12:20. > :12:23.indecently assaulted a 13`ydar`old girl. South Yorkshire Policd have

:12:24. > :12:27.confirmed to us that on Friday the arrested 66`year`old man from

:12:28. > :12:32.Rotherham area and say he h`s been released on bail last investigations

:12:33. > :12:35.continue. People will be asking, what is his

:12:36. > :12:42.future? Well, Barry Dodson has been on

:12:43. > :12:46.Rotherham Council for 14 ye`rs. Although he has stepped down as me

:12:47. > :12:51.and resign from the Labour Party, he is still a counsellor and wd

:12:52. > :12:55.understand will still receive his council allowances. He has not made

:12:56. > :13:00.any comment to ours. Rotherham council says it cannot commdnt on

:13:01. > :13:07.what is now a police matter. In his register of interests, Barrx Dodson

:13:08. > :13:17.lists that he is a life member and instructor of a local karatd, Bob ``

:13:18. > :13:22.karate club. A representative of the karate club has said that B`rry

:13:23. > :13:30.Dodson has not had any involvement with them for ten years. We have

:13:31. > :13:33.tried to contact Barry Dodson for comment but he has not responded.

:13:34. > :13:35.The number of people who ard unemployed in Yorkshire has fallen

:13:36. > :13:40.Figures for the period betwden March and May show there were 222,000

:13:41. > :13:43.That is 16,000 fewer than the previous quarter.

:13:44. > :13:45.The regional unemployment r`te is now 7.9%, which is

:13:46. > :13:49.But how difficult is it for young migrants here in Xorkshire

:13:50. > :13:51.to find work, especially if English isn't their first language?

:13:52. > :13:53.More than 4,000 Roma people have come to Rotherham

:13:54. > :13:58.Our reporter has been to thd first event of its kind there, ailed at

:13:59. > :14:15.Traditional Roma music being enjoyed by traditional Roma people.

:14:16. > :14:18.But this is not Slovakia or the Czech Republic.

:14:19. > :14:21.Teenagers here have been invited to a special event,

:14:22. > :14:23.encouraging them to aim high when it comes to employment.

:14:24. > :14:26.Where our students have comd from, they have been discriminated

:14:27. > :14:28.against, so they have never known anything other than digging up

:14:29. > :14:31.the roads or becoming a bricklayer, which are good professions, but this

:14:32. > :14:34.has given them the opportunity to look at what they

:14:35. > :14:41.This has all been funded by Roma Matrix,

:14:42. > :14:45.a European project working to combat racism and encourage integr`tion.

:14:46. > :14:48.15 and 16`year`olds here have just completed special

:15:05. > :15:06.I was going into schools to teach for two hours.

:15:07. > :15:09.I have been teaching childrdn reading and helping them.

:15:10. > :15:13.We jumped at the chance to promote opportunities and for our children

:15:14. > :15:36.Dominica will go on to train as a teaching assistant.

:15:37. > :15:38.The hope is that by raising aspirations, mord Roma

:15:39. > :15:41.teenagers in South Yorkshird can go on to have successful careers.

:15:42. > :15:43.An argument has broken out hn one of Sheffield's prettiest pl`ces

:15:44. > :15:49.with criticism over the council storing waste at Graves Park.

:15:50. > :15:52.Hundreds of bin bags were pictured there earlier this week.

:15:53. > :15:55.The Council says it is sorthng the problem out, but the Frhends

:15:56. > :16:07.In a city that celebrates its greenery, this is

:16:29. > :16:32.Volunteers have worked hard to restore this area over 15 ydars

:16:33. > :16:35.The council say they are working hard to clear the depot.

:16:36. > :16:43.But the group say they should not be using this land for rubbish at all.

:16:44. > :16:45.Another wagon load is arrivhng and that should not happen.

:16:46. > :16:59.Sheffield Council sent us a statement.

:17:00. > :17:03.The land here, all of it including that, is part of the park.

:17:04. > :17:05.Just because someone has put a fence around it and startdd

:17:06. > :17:08.filling up with rubbish doesn't stop it from being part of the p`rk.

:17:09. > :17:12.It is only full of rubbish because someone has put that their.

:17:13. > :17:15.It is only full of rubbish because someone has put that there.

:17:16. > :17:18.The backlog should be clear by the end of the week.

:17:19. > :17:20.The council says they are h`ppy to meet with the group

:17:21. > :17:33.The national boxing champ h`nding out food on the streets before

:17:41. > :17:43.A new exhibition featuring the techniques used

:17:44. > :17:56.Our top golfers have been doing their final preparations today for

:17:57. > :18:03.Sheffield's Danny Willett h`d to battle with some heavy showdrs

:18:04. > :18:08.on the course at Royal Liverpool this afternoon.

:18:09. > :18:14.But it didn't seem to affect his mood.

:18:15. > :18:16.He and fellow qualifier from Huddersfield, Chris Hanson

:18:17. > :18:18.will be sharing the fairways with Tiger Woods,

:18:19. > :18:28.Willett and Westwood both start in the afternoon.

:18:29. > :18:37.It is unbelievable. Quite h`rd to put into words what it is lhke to

:18:38. > :18:48.participate in this and not just watch. If there is rain, it will be

:18:49. > :18:53.soft and it is quite easy to score. But if it is for, it is mord tricky.

:18:54. > :18:59.It will be interesting to sde how the week will play out. We wish them

:19:00. > :19:08.well. We don't know anything about golf!

:19:09. > :19:10.Following on from a triumphant London Olympics,

:19:11. > :19:14.Commonwealth Games. Around 60 athletes from this part of the world

:19:15. > :19:18.Amongst them will be a boxer from Leeds who's already

:19:19. > :19:21.But for Kez Ashfaq, life isn't just about what happens

:19:22. > :19:34.It is Friday evening in Leeds. Kez Ashfaq has joined other young

:19:35. > :19:40.Muslims from the region to share food and compositions with people

:19:41. > :19:44.who spend their nights the street. I thought the idea was brilli`nt.

:19:45. > :19:55.These people have been throtgh hard times. Some of them are starving for

:19:56. > :20:01.this is not the work of an official charity, the group simply chooses to

:20:02. > :20:07.get together every last Friday of the month to give food to others

:20:08. > :20:20.Ramadan. This is good for us. We Ramadan. This is good for us. We

:20:21. > :20:28.know we are doing good. On ` wet night, their commitment is warmly

:20:29. > :20:36.appreciated. It is supportive. It helps. Happy to be here. Yot catch

:20:37. > :20:44.up with old friends that yot don't usually see. You don't know if they

:20:45. > :20:52.are alive and kicking basic`lly The day job for Kez Ashfaq is boxing. He

:20:53. > :20:57.is already a junior Commonwdalth gold medallist and national

:20:58. > :21:01.champion. He spends the week with the British squad in Sheffidld. It

:21:02. > :21:07.is a tough regime that is even more exhausting through Ramadan. We

:21:08. > :21:11.believe that the way that the fast makes us stronger. Hopefullx that

:21:12. > :21:18.will help me in the Commonwdalth Games. Training hard now. I am

:21:19. > :21:33.showing the Commonwealth Gales that I am ready. Like every tournament,

:21:34. > :21:38.you go there to win. In the gym is someone who knows all about winning

:21:39. > :21:46.gold medals. He is really skilled. It is nice to have someone to work

:21:47. > :21:52.with who is at my level. We are there to teach each other. He wants

:21:53. > :21:59.successful stock if he loses, he will come back. He will be training

:22:00. > :22:04.twice as hard. For now, shadow boxing. But when the panties are

:22:05. > :22:09.being thrown for real, Kez @shfaq will be ready. And whatever happens

:22:10. > :22:15.in Glasgow, he says he will continue to be a force in and out of the

:22:16. > :22:20.boxing ring. He is a great inspiration for a lot

:22:21. > :22:25.of young people. And the Commonwealth Games get underway next

:22:26. > :22:34.week. Tomorrow, we will havd a preview with Jessica Ennis`Hill s

:22:35. > :22:45.coach. Sadly she will not bd there as she is slightly busy!

:22:46. > :22:51.A new exhibition is celebrating the link between water and medicine

:22:52. > :22:56.which has opened in west Yorkshire. It has been designed with the help

:22:57. > :23:00.from injured veterans. During the First World War, battles

:23:01. > :23:04.were not just being fought on the Western Front. There were d`ily

:23:05. > :23:08.fights, losses and victories for medical teams on the front line A

:23:09. > :23:19.new exhibition in Leeds aims to celebrate the progress made over the

:23:20. > :23:24.past 100 years. Both of these soldiers were injured in

:23:25. > :23:26.Afghanistan. I probably would have died in the First World War. A

:23:27. > :23:44.double amputation. The first guests were sever`l

:23:45. > :23:56.injured soldiers. This man was awarded The Victoria Cross for

:23:57. > :24:02.heroism in Iraq. My treatment from the battlefield to rehabilitation

:24:03. > :24:09.was amazing. You have to de`l with whatever life throws at you every

:24:10. > :24:15.day. 100 years after the war to end all wars, conflict continues. But

:24:16. > :24:20.scientists and doctors from around the world have made huge

:24:21. > :24:45.discoveries. And hopefully, a time`lapse video has been shot at

:24:46. > :24:49.one of our stately homes, showing a painting featuring the Queen Mother

:24:50. > :24:57.and Prince William being installed. The exhibition also features the

:24:58. > :25:03.first public display of the official christening portrait of Prince

:25:04. > :25:12.George. You are a culture vulture? H

:25:13. > :25:17.certainly am! Let me show you some beautiful

:25:18. > :25:29.pictures. This was Castle Hhll at sunset. This reservoir look

:25:30. > :25:38.beautiful. Keep sending in xour pictures. Let's look at the rooftop

:25:39. > :25:48.camera. We have had a fairlx lively cold front moving into the

:25:49. > :25:52.Northwest. There has been some rain, sharp showers from thd
