:00:46. > :00:48.are left with this handful of birds, should have hundreds of them.
:00:49. > :00:52.We need to find a new strategy and that is what we hope to do.
:00:53. > :00:55.The first thing we want to do is send out a very clear message to
:00:56. > :00:58.the shooting fraternity that among the large number
:00:59. > :01:01.of responsible shooters, there are a few bad apples in that barrel.
:01:02. > :01:06.We would like them to sort them out, to stop killing these birds so that
:01:07. > :01:09.we can talk about their future in our landscape and find compromises
:01:10. > :01:15.Hen harriers are attracted to our moorland because of the way it
:01:16. > :01:20.They nurture the heather to encourage grouse to live and breed.
:01:21. > :01:25.This creates the perfect habitat for a large number of wild birds.
:01:26. > :01:29.Heather moorland is beautiful and it would almost have been lost
:01:30. > :01:33.if it wasn't for grouse moor management over the last 200 years.
:01:34. > :01:36.The harriers are attracted to them because the heather is there
:01:37. > :01:40.Because there is a wonderful abundance of wader birds like curlew
:01:41. > :01:45.And also, the gamekeepers control the number of predators giving
:01:46. > :01:48.everything that nests on the ground, including the harrier,
:01:49. > :01:55.Gamekeepers argue the numbers of hen harriers need to be
:01:56. > :01:57.controlled otherwise a grouse shoot becomes uneconomic, threatening
:01:58. > :02:02.rural jobs and the carefully managed habitat hen harriers rely on.
:02:03. > :02:05.The government is currently working on a plan to increase the number of
:02:06. > :02:15.this endangered bird of prey while allowing our moorland to flourish.
:02:16. > :02:18.A West Yorkshire MP has accused Lady Warsi,
:02:19. > :02:21.who resigned from government last week, of "embarassing herself" by
:02:22. > :02:27.Lady Warsi resigned from government because she disagreed with
:02:28. > :02:31.In newspaper articles today she predicted the Tories will be unable
:02:32. > :02:35.to win an outright majority because they haven't done enough to
:02:36. > :02:42.It's a claim dismissed by Elmet and Rothwell MP Alec Shelbrooke.
