:00:00. > :00:00.That is all from the BBC News at 6.00. Now on

:00:07. > :00:19.I didn't know what we were going to do or anything, and it was worrying

:00:20. > :00:22.that the pair of us could have been out on the street and all

:00:23. > :00:31.We speak to a representative from the insurance industry.

:00:32. > :00:40.The charity helping the hungry by picking up surplus stock.

:00:41. > :00:44.The blind man trying to beat his own landspeed record

:00:45. > :00:58.It has been a day of wind and showers. I will be back with the

:00:59. > :01:08.details for tomorrow. So have you had your summer holiday

:01:09. > :01:12.or are you busy packing for it? More importantly,

:01:13. > :01:14.will you have holiday insurance? Figures show one

:01:15. > :01:17.in five holiday`makers go abroad Over 4,000 people a week make

:01:18. > :01:23.a claim on their travel insurance for medical treatment while abroad,

:01:24. > :01:27.meaning insurance companies pay out But tonight we talk to a pensioner

:01:28. > :01:34.who nearly lost his home after he got a bill for more than ?40,000

:01:35. > :01:38.after becoming ill on holiday, In a moment, we'll be talking to

:01:39. > :01:46.the Association of British Insurers, but first, here's our health

:01:47. > :01:55.correspondent, Jamie Coulson. When John McKenny went to Benidorm

:01:56. > :01:59.in January with his wife, their holiday turned into a nightmare. The

:02:00. > :02:03.81`year`old was taken ill with suspected pneumonia and then needed

:02:04. > :02:08.an emergency operation on a stomach ulcer. But despite having travel

:02:09. > :02:13.insurance, the company he bought it from refuse to cover the Spanish

:02:14. > :02:18.hospital bills of more than ?40,000. `` refused. I did not know

:02:19. > :02:21.what we were going to do anything. And it was worrying. The pair of us

:02:22. > :02:28.could have been out on the street with all our savings gone and

:02:29. > :02:34.everything. The policy offers holiday`makers peace of mind! The

:02:35. > :02:38.group refused to pay out, claiming he had misrepresented his medical

:02:39. > :02:43.history and saying the claim related to pre`existing conditions,

:02:44. > :02:48.something John's family disputed. It was pretty frustrating but then that

:02:49. > :02:52.turned to anger, because John and Edna, they had paid their premium

:02:53. > :03:00.and they were entitled to a service. And the insurance company, Ace,

:03:01. > :03:04.flatly refuse to do anything for them. Faced with the prospect of

:03:05. > :03:09.losing his home and locked in a dispute with the insurance company,

:03:10. > :03:12.John and his wife turned to the financial ombudsman, who launched

:03:13. > :03:16.their own investigation. The ombudsman found that the company had

:03:17. > :03:19.been unreasonable and had handled John's claim unreasonably, and this

:03:20. > :03:24.would have caused distress and inconvenience. We don't often see

:03:25. > :03:30.cases where the insurance company has got these things this badly

:03:31. > :03:34.wrong, but it causes great distress and at a very difficult time, and

:03:35. > :03:37.this could easily have been resolved if the insurance company had

:03:38. > :03:42.bothered to do the basic checks we would expect them to do as part of

:03:43. > :03:48.any claim. For the past 20 years, we have always had a holiday. The

:03:49. > :03:53.company has admitted the service did not meet the high standards it

:03:54. > :03:54.normally expect of itself. John and his family should now have their

:03:55. > :03:57.bills paid. Earlier I spoke with Malcolm Tarling

:03:58. > :04:01.from the Association of I asked him how common it is for an

:04:02. > :04:06.insurance company not to pay out. I can't comment on individual cases,

:04:07. > :04:09.but what I can say is that it's extremely rare that problems

:04:10. > :04:11.like this arise. Insurers are there to pay out

:04:12. > :04:14.on treatment that people need They're paying out over ?4 million

:04:15. > :04:18.every week to help holiday`makers In John McKenny's case,

:04:19. > :04:24.he paid his premium, he was entitled to cover and peace of mind, yet when

:04:25. > :04:28.it came to paying out, the insurance Are they just looking

:04:29. > :04:33.for loopholes to trip people up? Travel insurers are

:04:34. > :04:35.there to pay claims. They're not there to look

:04:36. > :04:38.for loopholes to trip people up. They pay out over 4,000 claims every

:04:39. > :04:43.single week in medical expenses That's what they're there to do

:04:44. > :04:49.and that's what people expect. How can you be sure you are fully

:04:50. > :04:52.covered if you take out insurance? The most important thing to do is

:04:53. > :04:55.check what you are covered If you have

:04:56. > :05:00.a pre`existing condition, check to see if that's covered, if you have

:05:01. > :05:03.a serious medical condition that may not be covered by a standard

:05:04. > :05:07.policy, shop around, go to a local The vast majority of people,

:05:08. > :05:11.regardless of their medical conditions, should be able to get

:05:12. > :05:14.affordable travel insurance. And if you're told a company

:05:15. > :05:17.won't pay up, should you do what If you run into problems claiming,

:05:18. > :05:23.go back to the insurance company and they'll do everything they can

:05:24. > :05:25.to resolve the problem. If you're still unhappy,

:05:26. > :05:36.you may wish to contact If you have any horror holiday

:05:37. > :05:40.stories you'd like us to share with us, here's how you get in touch.

:05:41. > :05:44.We're on Facebook. Search for BBC Look North Yorkshire.

:05:45. > :05:47.You can email us at look.north@bbc.co.uk.

:05:48. > :05:48.And you can tweet us at BBC Look North,

:05:49. > :05:52.where you can follow us as well. Next tonight, a privately`run prison

:05:53. > :05:55.has been heavily criticised for locking up inmates in cells

:05:56. > :05:58.without electricity or running water Doncaster Jail, which is run by

:05:59. > :06:03.security firm Serco, was found to have levels of violence up to four

:06:04. > :06:23.times higher than in similar jails Since it opened two decades ago, HMP

:06:24. > :06:27.Doncaster has been run by a private company. The involvement of

:06:28. > :06:32.organisations like Serco has always been controversial with campaigners

:06:33. > :06:35.and unions. Today's report, following a snap inspection, will

:06:36. > :06:40.doodle to change that. It talks of a prison in decline where staff did

:06:41. > :06:47.not appear fully in control of some wings. `` will do little. Inmates

:06:48. > :06:52.were locked in cells with no running water or electricity for more than

:06:53. > :06:55.two days. We have made a number of recommendations in our report and

:06:56. > :07:01.the urgent one is that they address the level of violence. We also have

:07:02. > :07:05.concerns around drug treatment and we feel that approach was quite

:07:06. > :07:12.dangerous and needs to be addressed urgently. Those requests, it seems,

:07:13. > :07:13.are no surprise to the company who runs the jail. This is what they

:07:14. > :07:26.said. According to campaigners, if those

:07:27. > :07:31.improvements are not made, it will have an impact on all of us. People

:07:32. > :07:34.are not going to go out well`prepared for a responsible

:07:35. > :07:38.life, which is what prison is meant to be doing. Instead they will be

:07:39. > :07:44.out. They are inside one day and out the next. Far too often, they are

:07:45. > :07:48.back the next. But Serco and the Ministry of Justice point to success

:07:49. > :07:50.in cutting reoffending rates. But this will mean little to those who

:07:51. > :07:54.say profit and prisons do not mix. Later on Look North,

:07:55. > :07:57.the Yorkshire vet saving the lives In other news, 60,000 people have

:07:58. > :08:07.signed an online petition urging Sheffield United not to reinstate

:08:08. > :08:10.convicted rapist Ched Evans once Evans, seen here in the black suit,

:08:11. > :08:17.was jailed for five years in 2012 He's due to be released

:08:18. > :08:21.later this year. Sheffield United's official

:08:22. > :08:24.supporters' group says it's been The club has said previously that

:08:25. > :08:30.it's been in touch with Evans since his conviction but today it

:08:31. > :08:36.wouldn't comment further. The number of people who are

:08:37. > :08:39.unemployed in Yorkshire has fallen Figures for the period between April

:08:40. > :08:44.and June show there were 218,000 That's 12,000 fewer than

:08:45. > :08:49.the previous quarter. The regional unemployment rate is

:08:50. > :08:52.now 7.8%, which is The parents of a four`year`old boy

:08:53. > :08:59.killed in a house fire in Keighley Nathan Harrison died

:09:00. > :09:03.in hospital after the fire In a statement,

:09:04. > :09:08.his mother Jodie Collins described him as a loving, happy,

:09:09. > :09:13.sweet child who loved everybody. His father Chris said

:09:14. > :09:15.the family were distraught at The cause of the fire is

:09:16. > :09:30.still under investigation. A Yorkshire charity has told

:09:31. > :09:33.Look North that demand is soaring Fareshare gives wasted food

:09:34. > :09:36.from supermarkets to other charities In 2011 they were serving

:09:37. > :09:40.around 650,000 meals a year. Last year it reached 800,000

:09:41. > :09:43.and this year is expected to top But this isn't food that has gone

:09:44. > :09:48.off or is being thrown out It's food that has been over`ordered

:09:49. > :09:51.and won't even get to the shops. Tucked away

:09:52. > :09:58.on an industrial estate in Barnsley Not food thrown away

:09:59. > :10:03.by supermarkets but stuff that is It hasn't been anywhere

:10:04. > :10:11.near a shelf or a pricing`gun. Right, so what we've got in here is

:10:12. > :10:15.mincemeat supplied to us each week. So we have a palette

:10:16. > :10:18.of mincemeat supplied to us from a manufacturer called ABP,

:10:19. > :10:21.and that will go into a hot meal Most people wouldn't believe

:10:22. > :10:29.the leftovers. I think they'd be shocked that

:10:30. > :10:34.this food is potentially waste. If it wasn't in our warehouse here

:10:35. > :10:37.and being distributed this week, it So I think it is

:10:38. > :10:42.a shocking statistic. But actually, there's a lot more

:10:43. > :10:45.food out there that Fareshare Over the last three years,

:10:46. > :10:52.the number of meals they've provided has gone

:10:53. > :10:55.up, and Fareshare Yorkshire thinks Once the van is packed up,

:10:56. > :11:03.it's off to one of the charities they help, this time to Avalunch,

:11:04. > :11:07.which has been here for 14 years. In fact,

:11:08. > :11:17.we're at the point where we wouldn't survive if Fareshare didn't bring us

:11:18. > :11:19.their products, so we can still They can have up to 50 people

:11:20. > :11:25.in here for their cheap meals made And this is where it ends up being

:11:26. > :11:37.delivered to 84`year`old Doreen I mean,

:11:38. > :11:46.half of it is done without pay. As people queue up at the end

:11:47. > :11:53.of the foodchain, Fareshare says it would be better if their services

:11:54. > :11:56.weren't needed at all. But for now,

:11:57. > :11:59.they're helping thousands of people What an incredible story. And those

:12:00. > :12:16.Yorkshire puddings didn't look bad! Still to come, a full round`up of

:12:17. > :12:19.all last night's football action. Plus, up for a title, as Kell Brooks

:12:20. > :12:23.arrives in America to face IBF world And 11 years

:12:24. > :12:28.after his first successful world landspeed record attempt, can blind

:12:29. > :12:40.driver Mike Newman do it again? Next tonight, the vet

:12:41. > :12:41.from Hipperholme near Halifax who's making a massive difference saving

:12:42. > :12:46.the lives of birds of prey in India. Johanna Storm runs

:12:47. > :12:49.an exotic bird and reptile clinic in West Yorkshire and has been filmed

:12:50. > :12:53.doing her work overseas for a new She's part of a team working for the

:12:54. > :12:59.charity Wildlife Vets International, and I'm pleased to say she's with

:13:00. > :13:02.us in the studio now. First let's have a quick look

:13:03. > :13:18.at the programme. Every single one of these tables has

:13:19. > :13:22.a bird being operated on. These baskets are the patients waiting for

:13:23. > :13:25.surgery. I've never seen the scale of this sort of operation before.

:13:26. > :13:29.It's amazing what they are doing with all of these volunteers, and

:13:30. > :13:35.yet they are still not keeping up with the number of birds coming in.

:13:36. > :13:40.There we see a bit of the programme. Thank you for joining us. You can

:13:41. > :13:44.see how busy the surgery was, and this will coincide with the kite

:13:45. > :13:50.festival in India. Tell us about the festival and why it is bad for

:13:51. > :13:54.birds. It falls around the 14th of January and it is one of the most

:13:55. > :14:00.important festivals in the Hindu calendar. And it signals the end of

:14:01. > :14:04.winter and the coming of spring, so the winds come up and people fly

:14:05. > :14:19.traditional kites in a competitive way. And they cover it with a glass

:14:20. > :14:23.and it is like cheese wire. So that is really bad for the birds? Their

:14:24. > :14:28.mortality rate has been really bad. But you have done something about

:14:29. > :14:39.it. What have you done? I basically go and prepare the birds who broken.

:14:40. > :14:43.The charity organises with other NGOs the transport of injured birds

:14:44. > :14:48.to their camps, and there they go and get weighed, registered and a

:14:49. > :14:53.clean sock over their heads so they are not stressed. They have a tag

:14:54. > :14:57.with a number and get put into a basket and we try to assess which

:14:58. > :15:04.one is worse injured and operate on those first. We can see some of the

:15:05. > :15:09.operations taking place. That is the reception. Is some of your work in

:15:10. > :15:18.educating locals as well is helping the birds? Yes, a lot of it. Last

:15:19. > :15:21.year, I instituted that we give sale I'm solution under the skin of the

:15:22. > :15:30.birds and we experience fewer losses. `` say line solution. Is

:15:31. > :15:37.there much call for your work in West Yorkshire? Yes, people come

:15:38. > :15:47.from four, five, six hours away. What is the most exotic animal you

:15:48. > :15:56.have treated? Probably... A McCall. Not many of those. An endangered

:15:57. > :16:00.birds. I work for an international veterinary group and we have created

:16:01. > :16:06.Wildlife Vets International, which is a charity which basically tries

:16:07. > :16:13.to get the experienced, exotic vets and conservation experience into our

:16:14. > :16:17.projects. We do not employ vets but we get the really good effects and

:16:18. > :16:19.send them where they are needed. Thank you so much for telling us

:16:20. > :16:22.your story. And you can see Operation Wild

:16:23. > :16:27.tonight on BBC Two at 9pm. I will be watching that before the

:16:28. > :16:31.late shift! Onto sport,

:16:32. > :16:33.and Billy Sharp is returning to The 28`year`old striker,

:16:34. > :16:36.who was born in Sheffield, scored 45 goals for Doncaster

:16:37. > :16:39.in three spells at the club. He played in this game just days

:16:40. > :16:42.after the death of his son. Sharp has joined Leeds

:16:43. > :16:44.from Southampton for an undisclosed 45 goals, you scored! Pretty

:16:45. > :16:54.amazing! Now, if ever a football team

:16:55. > :16:57.needed a win to lift spirits it On Saturday, they were booed

:16:58. > :17:01.off the pitch after taking Later the same day they parted

:17:02. > :17:04.company with manager Mark Robins, on Well, last night,

:17:05. > :17:09.fortune turned in their favour. With that and the best

:17:10. > :17:25.of the Capital One Cup action, When Ollie Banks scored a

:17:26. > :17:27.spectacular goal to put Chesterfield 2`0 in front, more storm clouds

:17:28. > :17:33.seemed to gather around Huddersfield. This header gave hope

:17:34. > :17:37.but that was soon cancelled out when Gary Robson 's tour open his former

:17:38. > :17:43.team and Owen Doyle restored their advantage. Then a change of

:17:44. > :17:48.fortune. Wells scored from the spot before a tame`looking shocked in

:17:49. > :17:54.injury time somehow found its way through the keeper. They didn't let

:17:55. > :18:03.go of the bone they had been thrown. In extra time, Wells completed his

:18:04. > :18:07.hat`trick, as Huddersfield won 5`3. They went on and played some great

:18:08. > :18:12.football. Fantastic result for us and we needed that as a club.

:18:13. > :18:18.Doncaster Rovers also made progress in the Capital One Cup. It took

:18:19. > :18:22.until injury time to get past York City but this was worth the wait.

:18:23. > :18:29.Sheffield Wednesday's promising start to the season continued. This

:18:30. > :18:32.sweet finish was soon followed by the first Wednesday goal since

:18:33. > :18:42.coming out of prison for assault for this player. The 3`0 win was

:18:43. > :18:47.completed over Notts County. Leeds edged past Accrington 2`1. But

:18:48. > :18:59.this one the only new signing to leave his mark. This kicks could

:19:00. > :19:05.lead to a lengthy ban. The prize for City last time was a Wembley final.

:19:06. > :19:08.So far, so good this season. This got them past Morecambe and into the

:19:09. > :19:13.second round. Rotherham did it the hard way with

:19:14. > :19:18.an extra time penalty. New man Matt Derbyshire with a finish. And

:19:19. > :19:20.finally, Barnsley wasted what few chances they had as they went down

:19:21. > :19:26.2`0 at home to Crewe. In cricket, Yorkshire made

:19:27. > :19:28.short work of their latest Ritchie Pyrah took three wickets

:19:29. > :19:32.as the home side skittled Openers Alex Lees and Adam Lyth

:19:33. > :19:38.knocked off the runs in quick time as Yorkshire stay top

:19:39. > :19:43.of their one`day table. Boxing now, and the undefeated Kell

:19:44. > :19:47.Brook is gearing up for his chance at winning a world title this

:19:48. > :19:52.weekend in the city of Los Angeles. Not a bad place to be going

:19:53. > :19:55.for a title. Previous opportunities slipped away

:19:56. > :19:58.due to injuries suffered by him and his opponents,

:19:59. > :20:01.but this weekend the Sheffield fighter will enter the ring to face

:20:02. > :20:05.IBF world champion Shawn Porter. Our man Shamir Masri is also out

:20:06. > :20:09.there in California for BBC Look North and caught up with

:20:10. > :20:22.him as he arrived in LA. Kell Brooks arrived in LA this week

:20:23. > :20:27.after a two`week training camp in Las Vegas. The undefeated boxer from

:20:28. > :20:31.Sheffield says he is in the shape of his life for the biggest night of

:20:32. > :20:37.his career. This weekend, key has the chance to own the respect of the

:20:38. > :20:42.boxing world by winning the IBF title. `` he house. I've got a job

:20:43. > :20:48.to do Saturday night. I'm going to do what I'm contracting to do. When

:20:49. > :20:55.it comes to finite, it is me and Shawn Porter. That is all that will

:20:56. > :21:00.count. `` fight night. Nothing has been left to chance. With Kell

:21:01. > :21:08.Brooks in LA is scientist and sport performance physiologist Adam from

:21:09. > :21:11.Sheffield Hallam University. He is overseeing his final preparations.

:21:12. > :21:15.This is a very confident training camp but the trainer has been here

:21:16. > :21:23.before with other boxers from the gym. So what does he think of his

:21:24. > :21:26.chances? Really the only one since he did we get the impression he was

:21:27. > :21:35.going to make it all the way through to the top was Kell Brooks. You just

:21:36. > :21:39.knew he had what it took. Here in sun`drenched California, life for

:21:40. > :21:46.some has a relaxed pace. But that won't be the case for Kell Brooks

:21:47. > :21:52.come fight night. I am a few days away, injury`free. Healthy in body

:21:53. > :21:57.and mind, everything. I have itchy knuckles and I am raring to go! A

:21:58. > :22:00.final press conference takes place tomorrow with a weigh in on Friday

:22:01. > :22:06.ahead of the Saturday night showdown.

:22:07. > :22:11.Ooh! Doesn't that look nice! I thought we were going to see the

:22:12. > :22:18.beach for a second! We will have more later in the week.

:22:19. > :22:24.But we must move on. 11 years ago, Mike Newman set a new land speed

:22:25. > :22:31.record of 144 miles an hour. Today, he is back with the aim of reaching

:22:32. > :22:36.200 mph. Charlotte was there for this new world record attempt.

:22:37. > :22:39.Mike Newman has a tasteful speed. Blind from birth, you could not

:22:40. > :22:45.fulfil his dream of being a racing driver, so he went for the next best

:22:46. > :22:50.thing ` breaking world records. `` we could not fulfil. He broke the

:22:51. > :22:54.record books previously by reaching 144 miles an hour. Today, he has a

:22:55. > :23:02.new ambition. To smash through the 200 mile an hour barrier. Very

:23:03. > :23:07.exciting. A real sense of anticipation. He has a navigator,

:23:08. > :23:11.who just happens to be his dad Michael. It is my job to tell him

:23:12. > :23:16.which way to go. Left, right, keep it straight. The important moment is

:23:17. > :23:23.when to stop! It is nerve wracking for you? Yes, but we must stay

:23:24. > :23:29.focused. Focusing on the job we have to do. It is since 2003 Mike has

:23:30. > :23:34.wanted to break the barrier. Can he do it? He finally has the car which

:23:35. > :23:46.is capable. It is just a few minutes to he sets off. Let's find out.

:23:47. > :24:14.So, after the exhilaration and excitement, it is time for the

:24:15. > :24:19.horrible part. Waiting to see if he has done it. Then the results came

:24:20. > :24:20.in. Mike had averaged 200.9 miles an hour.

:24:21. > :24:33.APPLAUSE I am feeling absolutely ecstatic. It

:24:34. > :24:38.has still not sunk in. I have been chasing this dream for 11 years. And

:24:39. > :24:43.it was on this day 11 years ago I got my first car, of course, so it

:24:44. > :24:49.is a great anniversary present! Not bad for a former bank manager! His

:24:50. > :24:54.next challenge is to break the blind open water speed record. With his

:24:55. > :24:59.record, there is no doubt he will make history again.

:25:00. > :25:08.200 miles an hour! That is terrifying! Brilliant! Wheel so want

:25:09. > :25:12.to say congratulations to one of our local breweries. `` we also want to

:25:13. > :25:19.say. I just want to point out that the cameraman gave it to me like

:25:20. > :25:24.this. Somebody has been drinking! I bet you are more of a gin and tonic

:25:25. > :25:30.girl. I do like a beer with a curry! That is nice! That can be described

:25:31. > :25:36.as a full flavoured classic. I would agree with that. It won a

:25:37. > :25:44.competition above a lot of other ales to be named Best Ale. Over to

:25:45. > :25:53.another girl who likes to prop up the bar with her hand! Classy, isn't

:25:54. > :25:59.she thank you! I have a few photographs

:26:00. > :26:15.to show you. You can keep your pictures coming

:26:16. > :26:19.in. This is the address. Tomorrow will be another mixture of sunshine

:26:20. > :26:23.and showers, some of them later in the day being heavy. Some thundery

:26:24. > :26:27.showers late in the day tomorrow. Still the risk of them in the East

:26:28. > :26:32.on Friday and then as we move into Saturday, it is not looking too bad,

:26:33. > :26:36.but Sunday becomes cooler and more unsettled once again. So far today,

:26:37. > :26:39.there has been a scattering of showers will stop they have

:26:40. > :26:44.gradually died away through the afternoon. Sunshine and showers is

:26:45. > :26:49.the forecast today. I cannot concentrate because there is so much

:26:50. > :26:53.drinking beer going on! Sunshine and showers to end the day and then

:26:54. > :27:00.overnight tonight, dry with clear spells. Temperatures back to 11 or

:27:01. > :27:10.12. That is 54 Fahrenheit. The sunrise in the morning is at 5:42am.

:27:11. > :27:14.These are the high water times. Plenty of sunshine and broken cloud

:27:15. > :27:17.tomorrow morning but as we go through the day, more cloud was up

:27:18. > :27:27.and then come the afternoon, the risk of showers. `` more cloud

:27:28. > :27:30.bubbles up. Those showers could be thundery in the afternoon.

:27:31. > :27:36.Temperatures getting up to 18 or 19, so cooler than we have been used

:27:37. > :27:45.to. Quite breezy and heavy showers to come on Friday. Look at you! You
