:00:00. > :00:00.going away. Facing ?60 million cutbacks `

:00:00. > :00:13.a thousand jobs, free buses, leisure spending and markets all

:00:14. > :00:16.at risk as Kirklees Council tries We've been here as a business since

:00:17. > :00:28.1954. It is our bread and butter. We'll find out just how

:00:29. > :00:30.realistic the cuts could be. A warning that rail passengers

:00:31. > :00:35.could face higher fares and fewer It's his story day on the railway.

:00:36. > :00:52.Find out why. And we had a mix of sunny spells and

:00:53. > :01:02.scattered showers. I'll be back with your forecast.

:01:03. > :01:06.First tonight, to the biggest cuts Kirklees Council has ever faced.

:01:07. > :01:12.1000 jobs are under threat as the local authority looks to save ?60

:01:13. > :01:16.Even the council leader said today that services run by the council for

:01:17. > :01:23.People living in the area can now have their say on

:01:24. > :01:29.Batley and Birstall markets could close.

:01:30. > :01:33.The council describes them as 'loss`making'.

:01:34. > :01:37.Free town buses in Dewsbury and Huddersfield could also be axed.

:01:38. > :01:40.And all but two museums would be closed, with funding also being cut

:01:41. > :01:45.A pretty grim picture, as our political editor Len Tingle

:01:46. > :01:57.Brian Bailey knows a thing or two about cuts and not just from the

:01:58. > :02:02.decade he spent slicing ham. His store here has been in the threat of

:02:03. > :02:09.closure several times since the public spending cuts started and

:02:10. > :02:17.it's now in the firing line again. We've been here as a business since

:02:18. > :02:22.1954. It's a busy market for us. Bradley in West Yorkshire has had a

:02:23. > :02:29.market in its square since before the Victorian buildings. Birstall

:02:30. > :02:35.has its twin. Both are run by Kirklees Council. They say that rent

:02:36. > :02:42.for the markets don't meet costs. There are now on a list of potential

:02:43. > :02:49.closures to help find savings. Local stallholders don't see it that way.

:02:50. > :02:53.It's a bit of a shock. It's my livelihood. Nobody has had the

:02:54. > :03:03.decency to let us know what is going on. Potential savings will start

:03:04. > :03:06.months of meetings before budget decisions are made. It has never

:03:07. > :03:12.been done this way before but other councils are likely to follow its

:03:13. > :03:20.lead. The council's conservative opposition has a different view. You

:03:21. > :03:27.don't have to close all our markets and children's centres. New

:03:28. > :03:30.affecting the way we run services. We should be working with our

:03:31. > :03:36.community to make sure that we get proper decision`making. There is a

:03:37. > :03:40.long way to go before decisions are made. The only thing that is clear

:03:41. > :03:48.is that, unless these cuts are made, councils like this will finish up

:03:49. > :03:55.being technically brown cropped `` bankrupt.

:03:56. > :03:58.Well, earlier we spoke to Councillor Keith Wakefield, who's the leader of

:03:59. > :04:01.neighbouring Leeds City Council, and I began by asking for his reaction

:04:02. > :04:14.It's not usually my remit to talk about enabling authorities. I think

:04:15. > :04:19.Kirklees Council are one of the first of many who will do so over

:04:20. > :04:25.the next few months, mentioning the scale of the challenge they have. We

:04:26. > :04:30.have all faced tough decisions. Some may be tougher than Kirklees

:04:31. > :04:33.Council, some maybe not as tough, so you really feel for colleagues in

:04:34. > :04:39.the public sector who are making difficult decisions like that. How

:04:40. > :04:43.do you feel about what you're going to have to do? There are big

:04:44. > :04:48.challenges and we have to stay determined and do everything we can

:04:49. > :04:52.to protect the vulnerable people like we have done your last few

:04:53. > :05:00.years. But it is not an easy challenge and I can't guarantee

:05:01. > :05:07.that. Tour de France started in Leeds. Is the city reaping the

:05:08. > :05:11.benefits? There's no doubt that the response we have had from the people

:05:12. > :05:21.of Leeds and Yorkshire has given us a tremendous boost. What we had was

:05:22. > :05:24.the best marketing exercise, advertising that money can't buy.

:05:25. > :05:30.Millions on the streets, people immensely proud and emotional about

:05:31. > :05:34.what we achieved together. And you've got ambitious plans. You're

:05:35. > :05:43.talking about the Commonwealth Games. You mad? No. It's the result

:05:44. > :05:47.of this being a huge success and people feel a sense of pride. When

:05:48. > :05:53.you go through austerity, people like to come out and happy day

:05:54. > :06:03.forgetting all the challenges and problems `` have A.D. , and

:06:04. > :06:08.celebrate success. People think we should bet for the Commonwealth

:06:09. > :06:14.Games. We had a call this morning for someone who thinks we want to

:06:15. > :06:17.bid for the Ryder Cup. We've had people say, keep going, be

:06:18. > :06:22.ambitious, because that's what we really need in times of austerity.

:06:23. > :06:27.There's the money there to do all this? We have to go to the

:06:28. > :06:32.Government and partners, but the determination is there. We want to

:06:33. > :06:34.make sure that Leeds and Yorkshire can look forward to big, world`class

:06:35. > :06:38.events. Now, there have been more

:06:39. > :06:40.developments this afternoon in the investigation into

:06:41. > :06:42.Sir Cliff Richard, which is being The veteran pop star has denied any

:06:43. > :06:45.involvement in a historical child sex allegation

:06:46. > :06:48.that led to officers searching his Police have reacted to criticism

:06:49. > :06:52.of the way their search Dan Johnson is outside police

:06:53. > :07:07.headquarters in Sheffield Officers emphasising that this

:07:08. > :07:13.investigation is still in its early stages. It was a surge that lasted

:07:14. > :07:20.about five hours at Cliff Richard's penthouse apartment in the secluded

:07:21. > :07:26.development in Berkshire yesterday. Officers recovered a number of items

:07:27. > :07:30.that they have been examining today. After that search was publicised to

:07:31. > :07:33.media, a number of people have come forward to provide information. We

:07:34. > :07:37.don't know any more about who those people are what the nature of the

:07:38. > :07:43.information is, whether it relates to the allegation or not.

:07:44. > :07:54.It's not exactly clear. We've heard nothing more from Cliff Richard

:07:55. > :08:00.since yesterday. The event relates to an event in Sheffield in 1985. It

:08:01. > :08:08.was the preacher from the United States holding an event here. It's

:08:09. > :08:13.about sexual assault on a boy who was under 16 at the time. But

:08:14. > :08:19.Richard said yesterday the allegation was completely false. We

:08:20. > :08:23.understand he is still in Portugal, there has been activity there today

:08:24. > :08:30.at his villa but he said he would cooperate fully and officers want to

:08:31. > :08:33.speak to him, he is willing to do that.

:08:34. > :08:37.The children whose lives have been changed thanks to a special burns

:08:38. > :08:45.The RMT rail union is warning that rail passengers across Yorkshire

:08:46. > :08:49.could be facing higher fares, fewer train services and cuts to

:08:50. > :08:58.They say those are some of the ideas outlined in a consultation

:08:59. > :09:00.document about the future of the rail network in Yorkshire.

:09:01. > :09:12.For a decade, two companies have operated the bulk of train services

:09:13. > :09:21.in Yorkshire. Next year, both will be readvertised for a new ten year

:09:22. > :09:41.period. The Government wants to get a cut price railway.

:09:42. > :09:47.The whole thing starts off by saying we have to learn to do a lot more

:09:48. > :09:51.with a lot less. We already have some of the lowest investment in

:09:52. > :09:59.real ways in the North. We had to have fears that are affordable for

:10:00. > :10:05.local people. I don't believe that this particular document does any of

:10:06. > :10:10.that, it feels on every point. As the Government says, Northern Rail

:10:11. > :10:15.receives large amounts of public money, the most subsidised in the

:10:16. > :10:28.country, with just 66% of revenue coming from passengers. They point

:10:29. > :10:37.to a station Lakes last week `` like this. It attracts 200,000 passengers

:10:38. > :10:42.every year. It is very much the responsibility of Government in the

:10:43. > :10:48.first place to say, we are going to invest so that over time, the actual

:10:49. > :10:52.running costs of franchises like Northern Rail will come down.

:10:53. > :11:00.Otherwise, you will end up having to pay at the same levels of subsidy,

:11:01. > :11:05.so you do need to make a change. The tone of this controversial document

:11:06. > :11:09.is that the North can't have everything. Passengers can get new

:11:10. > :11:13.trains and stations, but fares will rise significantly under may be less

:11:14. > :11:16.staff employed. No decisions have been made yet. The consultation on

:11:17. > :11:21.the future closes on Monday. So the railways

:11:22. > :11:40.in Yorkshire are already costing There are some interesting figures.

:11:41. > :11:52.Every passenger goes ten kilometres, the government is putting in 70p. If

:11:53. > :11:57.you can pay to the big operators, it goes through some of the richest

:11:58. > :12:00.areas and there is no subsidy. People are paying a lot more for

:12:01. > :12:20.their real fears in the south of England. `` rail fares. They say

:12:21. > :12:23.there are rail electrification is a good investment. Over 20 or 30

:12:24. > :12:29.years, you reap the rewards of that. That gets to the heart of what

:12:30. > :12:31.this consultation is about, investment, subsidy, and who should

:12:32. > :12:37.foot the bill. A man charged with the murder

:12:38. > :12:40.of a woman in Sheffield has appeared The body of 39`year`old Anayat Bibi

:12:41. > :12:45.was found at a house on Firth Park 42`year`old Mazhar Nawab appeared

:12:46. > :12:49.in Sheffield Magistrates' Court He was remanded in custody

:12:50. > :12:53.and is due in Sheffield Crown Court Two other men,

:12:54. > :13:00.aged 83 and 20 remain on police bail Barnsley College could be hit

:13:01. > :13:07.by a strike. The University and College Union

:13:08. > :13:11.says some staff have been forced out, others have had to take jobs on

:13:12. > :13:14.lower pay grades, while others still It says the move is

:13:15. > :13:18.a botched money`saving measure. Now they're balloting union

:13:19. > :13:33.members on strike action. Timbers and masonry from York

:13:34. > :13:37.Minster were sold today. The 14th century oak was damaged in a fire 30

:13:38. > :13:44.years ago. The auction has become an annual event as old pieces of the

:13:45. > :13:49.Minster are sold off to pay for a ?20 million restoration project.

:13:50. > :13:52.Children whose lives have never been the same again due to severe burn

:13:53. > :13:54.injuries are benefiting from a voluntary service, set up to

:13:55. > :13:57.The Burns Club is based at Pindersfields Hospital

:13:58. > :14:00.in Wakefield, but is helping young people from across our region.

:14:01. > :14:02.It's a chance to make new friends, discuss their problems,

:14:03. > :14:06.But a warning that you may find some of the images in Kate Bradbrook's

:14:07. > :14:17.13`year`old Khalid is one of many young patients being treated

:14:18. > :14:23.here at Pinderfields Hospital for burn injuries.

:14:24. > :14:27.The main focus for him is physio and rehabilitation but,

:14:28. > :14:31.while the physical wounds will eventually improve with treatment,

:14:32. > :14:37.for children, the emotional scars can take longer to heal.

:14:38. > :14:42.Aidan, also 13, suffered 60% burns in a house fire which claimed

:14:43. > :14:51.He's been left with brain damage and attends a special school.

:14:52. > :14:59.He also comes here to the hospital for the Burns Club, an opportunity

:15:00. > :15:03.He sees other people with injuries the same as his

:15:04. > :15:08.He joins in with everybody, he loves it.

:15:09. > :15:10.The club is run entirely by volunteers and,

:15:11. > :15:16.as well as regular meetings, it also organises residential camps.

:15:17. > :15:20.It all costs money, which is raised through donations.

:15:21. > :15:24.It takes up to ?30,000 per year to run the Burns Club.

:15:25. > :15:28.It does help them because they just talk about their burn injuries,

:15:29. > :15:33.how they had the accident, how they are managing with the treatment

:15:34. > :15:40.For families like Aidan's, the service has been a lifeline.

:15:41. > :15:42.They'll never forget the trauma they have suffered, but

:15:43. > :15:57.Ringside seat ` we're with Sheffield boxer

:15:58. > :16:07.Kell Brooks as he prepares for his world title fight in Los Angeles.

:16:08. > :16:19.And find out why I have been having a very good today.

:16:20. > :16:21.Onto cricket and it's day one of Yorkshire's County Championship

:16:22. > :16:31.Yorkshire won the toss and put the visitors in to bat.

:16:32. > :16:41.Boxing now and it's nearly crunch time, or should that be punch time,

:16:42. > :16:44.for Sheffield boxer Kell Brook who fights for the world title in

:16:45. > :16:48.The welterweight is up against American Shawn Porter

:16:49. > :16:52.for the IBF title and Shamir Masri has been given exclusive access to

:16:53. > :17:00.Boxing in the US is a very popular sport.

:17:01. > :17:04.As soon as Sheffield's Kell Brook arrived at this media workout,

:17:05. > :17:11.The press were taking a close look at him.

:17:12. > :17:18.He's been joined by his dad Terry, mum Julie, and partner Lindsay.

:17:19. > :17:20.It's like being at home, all familiar faces.

:17:21. > :17:23.We are a few days away now, so it's about keeping chilled, relaxing

:17:24. > :17:35.His opponent for Saturday is IBF world titleholder, Shawn Porter.

:17:36. > :17:37.He had an interesting warm`up routine, a form of head...

:17:38. > :17:45.At Thursday's press conference, three world title fights took

:17:46. > :17:47.centre stage, with Porter versus Brook topping

:17:48. > :18:00.You can tell from the press conference, the pressure is building

:18:01. > :18:05.Shawn Porter is a character of the sport but will there be plenty of

:18:06. > :18:08.action to keep UK fight fans a week into the early hours of Sunday?

:18:09. > :18:14.If you ain't out of your seat and clapping,

:18:15. > :18:19.I plan to do everything right to the best of my abilities on Saturday

:18:20. > :18:23.night and I hope the fans in the UK will be rooting for me or Kell.

:18:24. > :18:32.I hope they stay up and tune in, because it's going to be a treat.

:18:33. > :18:36.Both men are unbeaten but Kell is adamant that it's not him who will

:18:37. > :18:44.He's going to bring it and someone has always got to go,

:18:45. > :18:49.It's going to be 33 and the new IBF champion of the world,

:18:50. > :18:54.Even Kell's grandmother will be watching.

:18:55. > :18:57.But one person who can't watch is his mum.

:18:58. > :19:00.I don't feel that I could bear to watch him,

:19:01. > :19:06.She gets in a really bad way when I'm fighting.

:19:07. > :19:08.Especially this fight, the magnitude of this fight, I can't

:19:09. > :19:13.All that's left now is an official weigh`in and pre`fight

:19:14. > :19:19.Here we are at MG's, this is where I've come

:19:20. > :19:42.It's been a grand old day of huffing and puffing on the North

:19:43. > :19:45.The volunteers that run the line have realised

:19:46. > :19:48.a long cherished dream to open a new platform at Whitby station.

:19:49. > :19:51.It means more frequent trains and, as Cathy Killick reports,

:19:52. > :19:56.What could be better than a beautiful day in Whitby?

:19:57. > :20:07.Arriving by steam train, that's what!

:20:08. > :20:10.It's a historic day on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

:20:11. > :20:16.The second platform is opening at Whitby so passengers were treated

:20:17. > :20:18.to not one locomotive but two, pulling their carriages then

:20:19. > :20:30.``posing. Train spotters, this is your money shot.

:20:31. > :20:35.We've been planning it for three years,

:20:36. > :20:38.working on it now for the best part of a year, as in building it.

:20:39. > :20:42.Very exciting, the first time we've had these two

:20:43. > :20:44.steam engines together in Whitby station, probably for 50 years.

:20:45. > :20:46.To have brought this back when, at one time,

:20:47. > :20:50.people might have thought this station had closed, is fantastic.

:20:51. > :20:52.The project marks a high point in the co`operation

:20:53. > :20:54.between the volunteer`run Heritage Line and Network Rail,

:20:55. > :20:59.and means two extra trains a day can run between Pickering and Whitby.

:21:00. > :21:01.Network Rail have provided the mechanical expertise.

:21:02. > :21:03.As you can see, it's historic signalling is a brilliant idea.

:21:04. > :21:19.It will bring more business and to the railway industry and tourism.

:21:20. > :21:22.I just love the sound and smell of the smoke.

:21:23. > :21:29.I know it probably sounds horrible, but I just love it.

:21:30. > :21:31.I just really enjoy going on steam trains.

:21:32. > :21:33.It's everything that I wanted in a steam train.

:21:34. > :21:36.As a young boy, I really wanted to be steam engine

:21:37. > :21:42.Looking at the new timetable, it just makes it so much easier to

:21:43. > :21:45.explore both Whitby and the whole of the North York Moors,

:21:46. > :22:11.Now there will be thousands of beetles at Harewood House this

:22:12. > :22:14.weekend, but not necessarily of the insect variety!

:22:15. > :22:16.No, we're talking cars and lots of enthusiasts.

:22:17. > :22:29.Joe Inwood can hopefully tell us more.

:22:30. > :22:38.Enthusiastic, yes. But I don't know that much about cars. There are

:22:39. > :22:42.literally thousands of people here who are not all enthusiastic about

:22:43. > :22:49.them, but spending a lot of time polishing them. Let's meet some of

:22:50. > :23:12.the characters who are here this weekend.

:23:13. > :23:33.I've been into VWs about 15 years. My camper van is where I fit with my

:23:34. > :23:41.sister! `` fight. The atmosphere is great. Everybody has a good time and

:23:42. > :24:00.enjoys it. There are people of all ages, it's a good laugh.

:24:01. > :24:07.As you can see, some real characters here this weekend. Some interesting

:24:08. > :24:17.stories behind the cars. A man who can tell us one is this organiser

:24:18. > :24:23.here. This is a special VWs year. An old lady whose husband had died had

:24:24. > :24:27.this car in the garage. She gave us it as long as it went to a good

:24:28. > :24:33.cause. She knew that the festival was a good cause. It isn't just

:24:34. > :24:39.about charity, it's about fun as well. It's all about families.

:24:40. > :24:47.Everything from cans and fairground rides to dog shows. This isn't only

:24:48. > :24:59.for shiny cars, but rusty cars. There is live music, to. We're

:25:00. > :25:05.hoping for 15,000 people if the weather holds up. 100,000 people

:25:06. > :25:10.have come over nine years. Paul, there, saving thousands of people

:25:11. > :25:20.are expected. Let's hope the weather holds!

:25:21. > :25:35.The theme of the weather is not a good one for the second half of

:25:36. > :25:52.August. This was sent in by Sandy. She is

:25:53. > :25:56.receiving an award because of all the 40 graphs that promote the area

:25:57. > :26:17.`` photograph. Keep your pictures coming in. Across

:26:18. > :26:22.the weekend, a lot of dry weather but it will be blustery and will

:26:23. > :26:28.feel cool. Tomorrow, the ruble amount of cloud and lacking in

:26:29. > :26:33.sunshine. The best part of the sun is going to be on Sunday, but the

:26:34. > :26:40.breeze will increase. We have a yellow alert from The Met Office. We

:26:41. > :26:46.had a few showers today. You can see the clouds on the satellite. Some

:26:47. > :26:52.have been heavy, not as much as yesterday, and they will ease over

:26:53. > :26:57.the next hour. We will have a dry night with long, clear spells.

:26:58. > :27:06.Temperatures will get to around 12 or 13 Celsius. The sun will rise in

:27:07. > :27:13.the morning at 5:46pm. The next high water in Scarborough will be in an

:27:14. > :27:21.hour at 8:37pm. Tomorrow doesn't look too bad, sunny spells the

:27:22. > :27:29.further south and east you are. Overall, a lot of cloud, with
