:00:00. > :00:00.high pressure is Sunday's weather. Scattered showers, with the wind

:00:00. > :01:16.gradually Tonight we're live in Rotherham`

:01:17. > :01:45.a town that in the last 24 hours has been rocked by a shocking

:01:46. > :01:48.report that has exposed the true scale of child sexual exploitation

:01:49. > :01:51.here over a 16 year period. More than 1400 children suffered

:01:52. > :01:55.at the hands of criminal gangs. Yesterday the leader of Rotherham

:01:56. > :01:58.council, Roger Stone, stepped down after the report

:01:59. > :02:01.exposed the serious failings by the Tonight pressure is mounting

:02:02. > :02:08.on Shaun Wright, South Yorkshire's Police and

:02:09. > :02:16.Crime Commissioner to do the same. Theresa May is the latest person to

:02:17. > :02:22.call for his resignation. We cross over to James Vincent who's

:02:23. > :02:37.live in Barnsley with the latest. The reason the calls for him to

:02:38. > :02:44.resign have got louder this evening is because he had a role with both.

:02:45. > :02:48.Between 2005 and 2010 commie was the politician in charge of children's

:02:49. > :02:49.services at the council and he has been a politician in charge the

:02:50. > :02:55.police. He was chosen by 7%

:02:56. > :02:58.of the electorate and on ?85,000 a year and no one can force him

:02:59. > :03:04.to go until the next election. Police commissioners were always

:03:05. > :03:07.a controversial subject but Shaun Wright's determination to stay

:03:08. > :03:11.on the job when his party wants him to go exposes what some would call

:03:12. > :03:16.flaws the system. One minute he was saying he was

:03:17. > :03:20.going nowhere, the right man for the job, the next, his own

:03:21. > :03:24.party was calling for him to quit. As a parent,

:03:25. > :03:31.to imagine that any young person is going through this ordeal, any right

:03:32. > :03:33.minded thinking person, any decent I don't think any

:03:34. > :03:40.of this was my direct fault. When you are a member of a 63 member

:03:41. > :03:46.council, you take collective responsibility for the actions

:03:47. > :03:48.of that organisation and I took my responsibility as part of that

:03:49. > :03:52.organisation and I have moved on and taken lessons from that experience

:03:53. > :03:56.and transferred them into another I can stand proudly on my record,

:03:57. > :04:02.being a Police and Crime The clamour to step down came

:04:03. > :04:14.from the panel tasked to scrutinise his job and it initially

:04:15. > :04:19.came from his political opponents. I am calling

:04:20. > :04:23.for his immediate resignation and He should never have put up

:04:24. > :04:29.for the job. The government cannot sack him

:04:30. > :04:32.but this afternoon it made I believe

:04:33. > :04:37.the Labour Party have called for him to resign and he has questions to

:04:38. > :04:42.answer and in the circumstances come His opponents, his own party

:04:43. > :04:48.and the government want Shaun Wright to consider his position that they,

:04:49. > :05:07.nor his constituents can make him The Police and Crime Panel cannot

:05:08. > :05:10.sack him, they can only suspend a Police Commissioner if they are

:05:11. > :05:15.accused of a crime that has a jail term of over two years. The idea of

:05:16. > :05:19.police commissioners was to break `` make the ball more accountable. No

:05:20. > :05:24.one can sack him apart from voters in the next election in 2016.

:05:25. > :05:27.Well earlier Harry spoke to the local MP Sarah Champion,

:05:28. > :05:35.who's also called for Shaun Wright to stand down.

:05:36. > :05:42.I began though by asking her how she's reacted to the report.

:05:43. > :05:48.I feel sorry for the abuse they have gone through and the abuse they have

:05:49. > :05:53.had to endure and how incredibly let down may have been. There is a

:05:54. > :05:57.growing momentum for the Police Commissioner to review his

:05:58. > :06:04.permission `` position at the moment. How do you stand on that? He

:06:05. > :06:09.has done some great work around Child exploitation and has put a lot

:06:10. > :06:13.of money into it. That is great but from my perspective, it is about the

:06:14. > :06:17.victims and we are talking about 1400 victims that have been let down

:06:18. > :06:23.under his watch and so morally I think he needs to step down in

:06:24. > :06:27.recognition of that. Rogerstone has fallen on his sword. Should others

:06:28. > :06:37.do the same because there are other people involved. `` Roger Stone.

:06:38. > :06:41.What was very clear to me was that while the front`line staff were

:06:42. > :06:46.recognising the problem, the senior managers come I don't know if they

:06:47. > :06:50.were turning a blind eye, I don't know. Child abuse is child abuse and

:06:51. > :06:56.I cannot understand why a senior manager would not act on that. Why

:06:57. > :07:02.are they saying they will not be any disciplinary action? It makes no

:07:03. > :07:07.sense. It is the image of Rotherham that is affected by this, not so

:07:08. > :07:13.much what people think of it here, what people think of Rotherham

:07:14. > :07:18.outside. That is the saddest thing because it is a great town, a great

:07:19. > :07:25.community but if you Google Rotherham now, all you get is child

:07:26. > :07:30.abuse. What about a bigger enquiry to the bottom of this or will that

:07:31. > :07:36.just bring up more dirt that Rotherham can't handle? I can see

:07:37. > :07:41.why people are calling for that. I want to focus on the victims who

:07:42. > :07:45.haven't received any justice and any support to rebuild their lives. It

:07:46. > :07:49.is also about going forward with the focus being on those victims and how

:07:50. > :07:54.best to protect them. With the best will in the world, doing a

:07:55. > :07:59.retrospective enquiry, it will find failings but what are we going to do

:08:00. > :08:06.now to protect our children? This isn't just a Rotherham issue and I

:08:07. > :08:08.have been in Parliament and it is national and most areas are not

:08:09. > :08:12.recognising it. There will be thousands if not tens of thousands

:08:13. > :08:15.of people out there who are not getting support who are being abused

:08:16. > :08:19.as they have been in Rotherham. Now the failure of police and social

:08:20. > :08:22.services to tackle grooming is something Margaret Wilson has been

:08:23. > :08:25.campaigning about for some time. Her daughter Laura was murdered

:08:26. > :08:29.in Rotherham. She was stabbed to death

:08:30. > :08:34.and thrown into a canal. Her mother says her daughter would

:08:35. > :08:54.still be alive if police Laura Wilson died a brutal death and

:08:55. > :08:57.was stabbed and drowned at knife`point because she had fallen

:08:58. > :09:09.pregnant and threatened to tell the man's family. He was convicted of

:09:10. > :09:13.her murder. For her mother, who says she first contacted the authorities

:09:14. > :09:19.about grooming a decade ago, she says responsibility goes beyond the

:09:20. > :09:23.killer. Social services and the police, they kept things quiet for

:09:24. > :09:28.so many years and were getting away with things. If they had acted all

:09:29. > :09:32.those years ago, my daughter may have been alive. She once

:09:33. > :09:37.vindication for what she has been saying has been going on for years

:09:38. > :09:43.but the staggering numbers, 1400 victims, it doesn't go far enough.

:09:44. > :09:50.It is the tip of the iceberg. There will be a hell of a lot more girls.

:09:51. > :09:53.What do you `` why do you think that? It has been going on for so

:09:54. > :09:58.long and some of these girls may have families of their own. They

:09:59. > :10:03.will never ever be able to forget. Margaret thinks apologies are not

:10:04. > :10:07.enough. What would you want to see happen to the people who are still

:10:08. > :10:15.at the council and South Yorkshire Police? They should step down if

:10:16. > :10:21.they are in the council and police that were there all those years ago.

:10:22. > :10:25.Laura's daughter was 13 weeks old when her mum was killed and it is

:10:26. > :10:33.that thought that has kept Margaret fighting. I have a young child that

:10:34. > :10:40.hasn't got a mother. I want to get justice for these girls. Not all of

:10:41. > :11:16.them were groomed. They should have done things years ago and she would

:11:17. > :11:20.still be alive today. These exploitation cases involve some very

:11:21. > :11:25.dangerous perpetrators and if agencies don't respond, there is a

:11:26. > :11:32.risk to children beyond abuse even risk of. We're hearing from 1400

:11:33. > :11:37.children. Is it not their job to remove children from a dangerous

:11:38. > :11:40.situation and protect them? The report isn't as balanced as it

:11:41. > :11:47.should have been and there is a danger also of a hysterical reaction

:11:48. > :11:51.to this report. Obviously it is very serious but I would question whether

:11:52. > :12:00.that number of children were exploited. They have not made up

:12:01. > :12:04.that member. It is a guess at the very best. They are in danger of

:12:05. > :12:10.losing sight of the fact that many front`line workers did raise

:12:11. > :12:14.concerns. Residential social workers, voluntary youth workers and

:12:15. > :12:20.a range of other workers in education, health, police and social

:12:21. > :12:25.work. At the front`line level, where there may have been failings, is in

:12:26. > :12:29.middle management and senior management but it is important to

:12:30. > :12:34.make that distinction. This is a fact that will have to be addressed

:12:35. > :12:38.that long`term support has got to be given to the victims. That could be

:12:39. > :12:44.over one year, over ten years, it could be of a lifetime. How many

:12:45. > :12:49.staff do you need to do that? A lot of stuff will be needed. It has been

:12:50. > :12:52.known for decades that there aren't enough support services for the

:12:53. > :12:59.victims of child abuse. It is all well and good getting hot under the

:13:00. > :13:03.collar but once a media has moved on, these children are left

:13:04. > :13:11.unsupported and we need to invest far more resources in helping them.

:13:12. > :13:18.At a time of austerity cuts, are you saying they awe at the bottom of the

:13:19. > :13:22.ladder? They are and the report does warn that many of these services in

:13:23. > :13:27.Rotherham and elsewhere have far too much demand on their services and

:13:28. > :13:33.they haven't got the resources. That situation is likely to get worse. It

:13:34. > :13:39.says that they are acutely overstaffed and under stretched. It

:13:40. > :13:44.is a big factor. Services in Rotherham and across the country are

:13:45. > :13:48.inundated with parents who have mental health problems, drug abuse

:13:49. > :13:51.problems, domestic violence and bringing up many children and

:13:52. > :14:02.children are suffering as a result of that will stop what therapy is

:14:03. > :14:19.available to the victims? They will be there to meet a number

:14:20. > :14:22.of their needs. The impact of abuse suffered by hundreds of victims in

:14:23. > :14:32.one of the room could last for years if not a lifetime.

:14:33. > :14:35.Emma was raped and abused weekly from the age of 13

:14:36. > :14:39.Emma says the police really let her down, even losing evidence

:14:40. > :14:46.That happened weekly by the same man but not only that, I had to

:14:47. > :14:51.start sleeping with people whoever they wanted me to sleep with.

:14:52. > :14:58.As things went on, that pressure got more and more and

:14:59. > :15:02.they got more violent and aggressive and more angry towards you.

:15:03. > :15:07.I went to the police, I went on two occasions.

:15:08. > :15:11.The first time they lost my evidence and lost my clothes that

:15:12. > :15:17.On the second occasion, they brought the men in for questioning.

:15:18. > :15:23.Two of them backed up in their statements what I had said

:15:24. > :15:27.and they released them without charge and said that there wasn't

:15:28. > :15:32.They make you feel like what you're doing isn't a crime and it

:15:33. > :15:39.The police with their response backed that up.

:15:40. > :15:42.I was treated worse than a criminal and I was a victim

:15:43. > :15:46.They are perverting the course of justice.

:15:47. > :15:50.They have known children have been seriously sexually assaulted

:15:51. > :15:54.and abused and they have turned a blind eye and let it continue.

:15:55. > :15:59.I have depression, I will always have it.

:16:00. > :16:06.I've got a bad eating disorder and was very depressed.

:16:07. > :16:11.I couldn't even function day to day and do normal day to day

:16:12. > :16:16.tasks because of the mental health issues I had from my abuse.

:16:17. > :16:24.The horrific reality for one Victim who's life has been torn apart

:16:25. > :16:32.So what help is on hand for teenagers like Emma?

:16:33. > :16:36.Who is there to pick up the pieces when their lives fall apart?

:16:37. > :16:38.We're joined by Tracy Haycox from Safe at Last,

:16:39. > :16:40.a charity which supports young people who leave home.

:16:41. > :16:51.Depression` what impact on rest of lives?

:16:52. > :17:00.The impact on their lives is horrific. They have suffered such

:17:01. > :17:06.traumatic experiences that will probably last well into their adult

:17:07. > :17:10.it. There was an exemplar of a victim who took her clothes to the

:17:11. > :17:21.police and they lost that evidence. `` example. We have seen an

:17:22. > :17:25.improvement in this over the years. The police and crime commission has

:17:26. > :17:35.dedicated funds to a project which works with young people. `` Police

:17:36. > :17:43.and Crime Commissioner. They also support us when children go and run

:17:44. > :17:49.away from home. You have seen an improvement. How shocked were you by

:17:50. > :17:54.what was exposed yesterday, 1400 children? We were shocked and

:17:55. > :18:00.saddened to see the extent of such abuse in Rotherham. How much support

:18:01. > :18:07.is available for victims? What is provided by the state? In terms of

:18:08. > :18:12.the state, it is up to the young person to tell us what support they

:18:13. > :18:18.need. It should be an menu of services that they given person can

:18:19. > :18:22.choose to what suits them the best, whether it is from statutory

:18:23. > :18:26.services to social services, their GP health services or charities like

:18:27. > :18:32.us know and we have a history of working with children and people.

:18:33. > :18:38.Have you seen an influx of people coming through your doors? It has

:18:39. > :18:43.been quite says `` stable in terms of the number that referred to that

:18:44. > :18:45.have issues around child exploitation. Thank you.

:18:46. > :18:47.The failings by the authorities has been described

:18:48. > :18:52.by Children's charity the NSPCC as a sort of collective blindness.

:18:53. > :18:55.One of the explanations for that in the review is that some council

:18:56. > :18:58.workers were afraid to tell the truth.

:18:59. > :19:01.Most of the perpetrators were of Pakistani heritage and staff were

:19:02. > :19:08.Joining us now are Muhbeen Husain and Parveen Qureshi who both work

:19:09. > :19:23.Parveen, was there a sense of denial that there was a problem? It is a

:19:24. > :19:32.shambles for the council and police authorities. Was there a denial by

:19:33. > :20:13.the Pakistani community? I don't think the community was aware to the

:20:14. > :20:16.people and bring the communities together. How do you get over

:20:17. > :21:29.something like this, something that does rock a community? It

:21:30. > :21:32.chance to speak out. How do you break the Tabuk? `` taboo. It cannot

:21:33. > :21:36.be swept under the carpet. Everybody knows it is wrong and they have to

:21:37. > :21:41.be told it is wrong and it has to be addressed. Thank you for joining us.

:21:42. > :21:46.That is all we have from Rotherham at the moment. Back to the studio.

:21:47. > :21:51.A man's been charged over the death of a man in Leeds at the weekend.

:21:52. > :21:52.37`year`old Gerard Adeshida died after being assaulted in Beeston

:21:53. > :21:55.on Saturday evening. David Powell,

:21:56. > :21:59.who's 27 and also from Beeston, has been charged with manslaughter.

:22:00. > :22:01.He's due at Leeds Magistrates Court later this morning.

:22:02. > :22:03.Police are investigating after a man was served beer contaminated with

:22:04. > :22:08.Solicitors for David Caminal say the taster sample he was offered

:22:09. > :22:11.at New Conservatory Bar was laced with caustic soda.

:22:12. > :22:15.It's thought the chemical was being used to clean the bar systems.

:22:16. > :22:18.The 47`year`old, who's from Barcelona, suffered

:22:19. > :22:21.internal injuries and spent three weeks in Leeds General Infirmary.

:22:22. > :22:26.The bar's owners have yet to comment.

:22:27. > :22:29.A decision is due later on whether or not drivers fined for crossing

:22:30. > :22:32.Lendal Bridge in York will have to apply to get their money back.

:22:33. > :22:35.Tens of thousands of fines were issued during a

:22:36. > :22:38.controversial trial closure of the bridge, which has since re`opened.

:22:39. > :22:40.City of York councillors will meet this evening to discuss the refunds.

:22:41. > :22:44.They want people to ask for their money back, but critics say everyone

:22:45. > :22:53.Tonight it's the West Yorkshire League Cup derby

:22:54. > :22:56.at Valley Parade between Bradford City and Leeds United.

:22:57. > :22:59.And if they create anything like the headlines our South

:23:00. > :23:03.Yorkshire teams made last night, we should be in for quite a treat!

:23:04. > :23:05.Sheffield United managed to bring another Premier League side

:23:06. > :23:15.And as Paul Ogden reports, they weren't the only ones.Last

:23:16. > :23:18.Last season they swept away Aston Villa and Fulham en route to an

:23:19. > :23:22.FA Cup semi, last night it was West Ham United's turn for the knockout

:23:23. > :23:26.West Ham led through this one and Sheffield United worked hard to

:23:27. > :23:35.No more goals in extra time and so to a penalty shoot out.

:23:36. > :23:38.The turning point of which Mark Howard's save from Valencia's

:23:39. > :23:48.Sheffield Wednesday can be just as proud after scalping a newer member

:23:49. > :23:51.of the Premier League, Burnley, by a single goal to nil at Turf Moor.

:23:52. > :23:59.Delivering with confidence as Sheffield Wednesday have done

:24:00. > :24:02.during their unbeaten start to the season so far.

:24:03. > :24:06.A third South Yorkshire victory on the road came for Doncaster Rovers.

:24:07. > :24:13.Nathan Tyson's penalty put Doncaster Rovers ahead.

:24:14. > :24:16.An equaliser for Watford and Rovers continued to play with their own

:24:17. > :24:21.flair and made sure their name goes into the draw thanks to Liam

:24:22. > :24:30.At Huddersfield, a rare collector's item in an otherwise drab tie

:24:31. > :24:36.James Vaughan looking as surprised as anybody

:24:37. > :24:40.at his own goal accidentally helping Forest to a 2`0 win.

:24:41. > :24:43.Rotherham United are out of the League Cup for another year as

:24:44. > :25:13.They are scraping the barrel with you sat there. Let us have a look at

:25:14. > :25:21.some photos. Look at Scarborough here. The second picture is an

:25:22. > :25:23.iconic scene from Yorkshire. We have a beautiful sunny picture from

:25:24. > :25:36.Chatsworth house. Keep the weather pictures coming in.

:25:37. > :25:44.It is brightening up and there will be some showers in the West later

:25:45. > :25:49.on. Low pressure will dominate our weather for the rest of the week.

:25:50. > :25:55.Sunday looks fine but next week looks very promising indeed. That is

:25:56. > :25:59.great news for the one`day international at Headingley next

:26:00. > :26:03.week. Cloud is pushing up from the south`west. It will stay dry through

:26:04. > :26:07.this evening but overnight, that cloud will continue to thicken and

:26:08. > :26:12.there will be some patchy outbreaks of rain spreading north`east will

:26:13. > :26:16.stop not amounting to a great deal but a couple of millimetres in

:26:17. > :26:24.places. Temperatures down to 12 Celsius.

:26:25. > :26:34.It is a damp starts with rain and drizzle in places and it will soon

:26:35. > :26:39.move into the North Sea and the skies will brighten with some

:26:40. > :26:41.sunshine. Just a hint of some heavy showers in western parts towards the

:26:42. > :26:48.end of tomorrow afternoon but further east, it becomes bright. Let

:26:49. > :26:53.us have look at those top temperatures of 21 Celsius. It is

:26:54. > :27:00.the average for the second half of August. Looking further ahead,

:27:01. > :27:04.Friday, sunny spells and scattered showers. Sunday looks the best day

:27:05. > :27:05.of the weekend and then something very nice and prospect hopefully

:27:06. > :27:13.next week. That's it from me now back to Harry

:27:14. > :27:26.and Amy with the latest from It is 24 hours since we looked at

:27:27. > :27:29.the scale of failings by police and the council in Rotherham in

:27:30. > :27:37.protecting hundreds of vulnerable children. By the police station,

:27:38. > :27:41.there is a gathering of protesters calling for his resignation this
