:00:00. > :00:09.On the programme tonight ` who knew what and when?

:00:10. > :00:12.Police and council chiefs f`ce awkward questions over Rothdrham's

:00:13. > :00:27.you should resign as a mattdr of conscience and in order to try and

:00:28. > :00:29.cleanse the council of the leadership it's had so far.

:00:30. > :00:31.Also tonight ` sorting out the rubbish.

:00:32. > :00:34.Councillors vote to press ahead with plans for a waste incinerator

:00:35. > :00:35.in North Yorkshire despite strong opposition.

:00:36. > :00:38.Revealed ` the forgotten paintings of a Yorkshire landscape

:00:39. > :00:50.Another beautiful day, 20 Cdlsius has been recorded. More sunshine

:00:51. > :00:58.tomorrow. Join me for the forecast. Good evening and welcome to

:00:59. > :01:02.Look North. We're live from College Gredn

:01:03. > :01:06.at Westminster in London. Five senior figures at

:01:07. > :01:10.Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Police have been

:01:11. > :01:14.questioned by MPs about how the authorities allowed the sexual

:01:15. > :01:33.exploitation of more than 1,400 Today we've heard that 25 ndw

:01:34. > :01:37.victims have come forward shnce the port two weeks ago uncovered the

:01:38. > :01:42.sheer scale of the abuse in the town. The former Chief Constable

:01:43. > :01:45.Phil South Yorkshire Police, Med Hughes, told the Home Affairs Select

:01:46. > :01:47.Committee he had failed the victims. Let's look at who else has been

:01:48. > :01:50.interviewed today. David Crompton, South Yorkshire

:01:51. > :01:52.Police's Chief Constable, took up He's already announced

:01:53. > :01:55.an independent investigation into how the force dealt with

:01:56. > :01:58.the grooming scandal. He was Chief Constable

:01:59. > :02:03.of the force between 2004 and 2 11, Shaun Wright,

:02:04. > :02:09.South Yorkshire's current Police He managed children's services

:02:10. > :02:17.in Rotherham between 2005 and 2 10. So far he's resisted calls to

:02:18. > :02:20.resign, but has stood down Martin Kimber,

:02:21. > :02:24.chief executive of Rotherhal Council, joined the authority

:02:25. > :02:30.in 2009 and resigned yesterday. And finally Joyce Thacker,

:02:31. > :02:35.the current executive director of Children and Young Peopld's

:02:36. > :02:40.Services at Rotherham Counchl. She says child protection sdrvices

:02:41. > :02:56.have been transformed As it stands at this moment, Shaun

:02:57. > :02:58.Wright is still being interviewed by that committee.

:02:59. > :03:00.Today, I travelled down with a mother whose daughter was mtrdered.

:03:01. > :03:03.She says Laura was a victim of the authorities' failure to

:03:04. > :03:06.We'll hear her story shortlx, but first Len Tingle has an overview

:03:07. > :03:20.Full severed and skip on to the committee under oath is subject to

:03:21. > :03:26.the penalties for perjury. LPs to tell them the truth. For thhs

:03:27. > :03:30.enquiry, they are demanding it. I swear by Almighty God that the

:03:31. > :03:35.evidence I shall I shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth and

:03:36. > :03:38.nothing but the truth, so hdlp me God. It's referencing the police and

:03:39. > :03:42.officials to be forced to ghve evidence under oath, but thd level

:03:43. > :03:49.of criticism that followed hs unheard of. You really let the

:03:50. > :03:53.people of Rotherham down. It was incompetence on your part to be in

:03:54. > :03:58.such a high paid position and not to know. You weren't aware of hts scale

:03:59. > :04:01.and scope, what were you aw`re of? The past and present chief

:04:02. > :04:07.constables of South Yorkshire were the first come under from the

:04:08. > :04:10.powerful Home Affairs Select Committee. David Crompton rdvealed

:04:11. > :04:15.that the position has worsened in the past week. 25 more young girls

:04:16. > :04:21.from Rotherham have now comd forward to say they had been groomed, salted

:04:22. > :04:26.and raped. I do accept things should have been done differently hn the

:04:27. > :04:32.past. Med Hughes stepped down in 2011 after seven years of Chief

:04:33. > :04:36.Constable. At the time I was both deputy and Chief Constable, I had no

:04:37. > :04:43.idea of the scale and scope of this type of organised crime. We find

:04:44. > :04:48.this impossible to believe. The most blistering criticism was reserved

:04:49. > :04:52.ahead of children's services at Rotherham Council, Joyce Th`cker.

:04:53. > :04:57.You should resign as a mattdr of conscience and in order to try and

:04:58. > :05:02.cleanse the council. Then Shaun Wright came under scrutiny.

:05:03. > :05:07.Resigning would have been the easy option given the last fortnhght with

:05:08. > :05:12.the various criticisms. He's the South Yorkshire Police and crime

:05:13. > :05:14.commissioner who refuses to resign despite previously being thd

:05:15. > :05:18.counsellor with special responsibility for children and

:05:19. > :05:25.young people. We aren't the experts in any of these areas. Shaun Wright

:05:26. > :05:26.is still being questioned rhght now. I'm joined now by Mark Sergdant

:05:27. > :05:40.the BBC's local government What questions is Shaun Wright

:05:41. > :05:44.facing? He's being asked whx he hasn't resigned. Everyone from the

:05:45. > :05:49.Prime Minister, Ed Miliband, his own crime panel, have called on him to

:05:50. > :05:53.step down but he says he won't. He said resigning would have bden the

:05:54. > :05:59.easy option given the criticism he's faced and he's happy to stand by his

:06:00. > :06:03.record. Tell us the purpose of today's hearing. For MPs to call

:06:04. > :06:06.these witnesses before the Home Affairs Select Committee to try to

:06:07. > :06:12.get to the bottom of what h`ppened in Rotherham. Some of these people,

:06:13. > :06:16.like Joyce Thacker, Med Hughes, haven't appeared in public since the

:06:17. > :06:21.report was published two wedks ago. The MPs have had the power to drag

:06:22. > :06:25.them to Westminster, reluct`ntly I suspect, to get answers out of them.

:06:26. > :06:30.Some of the exchanges have been extremely awkward for the whtnesses.

:06:31. > :06:35.How much influence does the panel have? Is there any legal relevance?

:06:36. > :06:39.All the witnesses have been asked to square on oath that they ard telling

:06:40. > :06:43.the truth and the significance of that is if anyone is found out not

:06:44. > :06:47.to have been telling the trtth, the perjury laws could come into play.

:06:48. > :06:55.That is to emphasise the seriousness of this inquest as MPs try to get to

:06:56. > :06:59.the bottom of what happened in Rotherham, why there were so many

:07:00. > :07:04.failures over so many years. Is it unusual for them to give evhdence

:07:05. > :07:08.under oath? It is unusual and the chairman said this was to ldave

:07:09. > :07:11.those witnesses in no doubt as to the seriousness of the questions

:07:12. > :07:16.they were going to be asked. MPs have been asking those questions

:07:17. > :07:19.again and again to establish exactly what these people knew about the

:07:20. > :07:26.problem in Rotherham. What happens next? MPs made, if they are not

:07:27. > :07:30.satisfied with the evidence, recalls some of these witnesses for another

:07:31. > :07:47.session. Keith Vaz, the chahr, has left those witnesses

:07:48. > :07:50.She says failure of police and social services in Rothdrham to

:07:51. > :08:00.The Serious Case Review into Laura's death found social care agencies

:08:01. > :08:02.missed numerous chances to support her.

:08:03. > :08:08.I travelled down to London with Maggie this morning.

:08:09. > :08:13.Sheffield station, another stop on a long journey for Maggie Whlson.

:08:14. > :08:16.It's over a decade since shd says she asked social services

:08:17. > :09:47.Today she's travelling to London to finally get answers

:09:48. > :09:51.It is not media driven that he asks these questions.

:09:52. > :09:54.After the hearing, I watched some of the key moments with Maggie. She

:09:55. > :09:57.told me she was angry with some of the things she heard.

:09:58. > :09:59.I'm angry because they aren't answering

:10:00. > :10:07.It's hard to sit and listen to everything,

:10:08. > :10:12.they've got to be accountable for the wrongdoings they've done.

:10:13. > :10:19.A lot of girls have been through hell and back, and their parents,

:10:20. > :10:35.Maggie joins me now. In the last hour, Keith Vaz mentioned L`ura s

:10:36. > :10:40.case. When asked why inform`tion had been blocked on the serious case

:10:41. > :10:44.review report into her death, Joyce Thacker said it was to protdct you

:10:45. > :10:50.and your family from the prdss, what do you make of that? That's what she

:10:51. > :10:55.told me. When I got the revhsed version, a lot was to do with

:10:56. > :11:00.undercover operations going on in Rotherham when Laura's name had been

:11:01. > :11:05.mentioned. Failings by the authorities were in that report and

:11:06. > :11:09.that was also blocked? Yeah. If they had concerns, why do they come to

:11:10. > :11:17.the parents and tell us? I only read it last year about this operation

:11:18. > :11:21.that was going on. Have you had any of your own questions answered

:11:22. > :11:25.today? Not really because they have suffered it around, they haven't

:11:26. > :11:35.answered the questions. What do you think should happen next? They

:11:36. > :11:42.should go. All of them? All of them. Do you have any confidence `t all in

:11:43. > :11:47.the authorities now? None at all. Do you feel they are now taking it

:11:48. > :11:50.seriously? They are, but thdy have to take it seriously now because

:11:51. > :11:56.it's a big thing. It's going to be a bigger thing. I know today has been

:11:57. > :12:04.really quite difficult for xou. Are you glad you came along and saw the

:12:05. > :12:07.questions? Yes. Thank you vdry much for coming with us and I hope you

:12:08. > :12:11.get some closure from what's happened today. Thank you.

:12:12. > :12:13.Meanwhile in Rotherham itself, prayers were said at the Minster

:12:14. > :12:16.Canon David Bliss led a service to remember not only

:12:17. > :12:19.the victims of the abuse, but also to ask forgiveness for the

:12:20. > :12:25.A candle in the corner of the Minster will be kept alight over the

:12:26. > :12:29.next few weeks, so people c`n come and reflect on what's happened.

:12:30. > :12:34.The Bishop of Sheffield Dr Steven Croft also took part in the prayers.

:12:35. > :12:38.Our hope is this will be helpful for some people in the weeks and months

:12:39. > :12:42.to come and will act as a vhsible sign in this community that what has

:12:43. > :12:45.happened is deep and serious and it's going to take many months,

:12:46. > :12:57.Well, the Rotherham MP Sarah Champion joins us live now.

:12:58. > :13:03.We just heard that there is a huge impact on the town of Rotherham and

:13:04. > :13:08.it's not just going to be hdre for weeks, but it's going to take years

:13:09. > :13:14.for the town to get over thhs. The town has been devastated by this.

:13:15. > :13:19.What we need to remember is Margaret has been incredibly, incredhbly

:13:20. > :13:24.brave coming forward, but there are 1400 children who still havdn't got

:13:25. > :13:27.any justice and their familhes still haven't got any recognition. Until

:13:28. > :13:32.we deal with that, we can't move forward. I've been pushing really

:13:33. > :13:36.hard to get resources to make that happen and also the people that are

:13:37. > :13:41.accountable need to be stepping up and protecting our families and our

:13:42. > :14:00.town. Do you have any confidence in the authorities to take the historic

:14:01. > :14:03.abuse and future abuse seriously? I have faith in the last year there's

:14:04. > :14:05.been a strong team put in place so I would say to victims, come forward

:14:06. > :14:08.and you will be taken seriotsly However, the volume of the historic

:14:09. > :14:10.cases is such that I worry we don't have the resources. I will `sk the

:14:11. > :14:13.Treasury for additional resources tomorrow. What do you make of what

:14:14. > :14:17.you heard today? It felt surreal. I could not believe, in this country,

:14:18. > :14:21.the level of neglect by people employed to look after children and

:14:22. > :14:24.the threats and intimidation of the front line staff and the victims

:14:25. > :14:29.trying to get justice. This should never ever have been allowed to go

:14:30. > :14:33.on and I think it's still going on across the country. Do you think

:14:34. > :14:38.they were answering the questions? No. We were getting very st`ged

:14:39. > :14:43.answers. Things were contradicting each other and all it's dond is

:14:44. > :14:55.opened up a lot more questions. Martin Kimber said if new evidence

:14:56. > :14:57.came forward he would look hnto disciplinary action and this

:14:58. > :14:59.committee has raised a lot of new information so I expect him to start

:15:00. > :15:03.disciplinary actions. It has raised lots more questions that nedd

:15:04. > :15:07.answering. Tonight the Home Affairs Select Committee is still

:15:08. > :15:11.continuing. Shaun Wright is still being interviewed. We'll brhng you

:15:12. > :15:13.more on our late bulletin at 10:25pm. Back to the studio. Thank

:15:14. > :15:16.you very much. In other news around the region

:17:19. > :17:21.incinerator near Knaresborotgh have The government pulled its ftnding

:17:22. > :17:26.from the ?1.4 billion development last year, but the council wants

:17:27. > :17:41.to go ahead with the plans `nyway. How to get rid of rubbish. Ht's

:17:42. > :17:45.something they've been trying to sort out in North Yorkshire for more

:17:46. > :17:50.than a decade and today, despite continuing opposition to thd scheme,

:17:51. > :17:53.councillors voted for a ?1 billion waste plant near Knaresborotgh to

:17:54. > :18:00.get the gal aired. This isn't just about an incinerator. This hs what

:18:01. > :18:05.people are saying, it's crude. This is a waste recovery centre `nd it

:18:06. > :18:09.will enhance recycling as wdll. But for many campaigners who protested

:18:10. > :18:13.against this plant, this issue is about the incinerator because 8 % of

:18:14. > :18:18.waste brought to the site whll be burnt here. But councillors say the

:18:19. > :18:21.plant, which is that a formdr quarry, is the option which offers

:18:22. > :18:25.the most value for money and it will mean they won't have to relx on

:18:26. > :18:34.landfill sites. This is where the incident rate is going to bd built.

:18:35. > :18:38.` incinerator. The council hnsists this plant will be a decent and good

:18:39. > :18:42.neighbour to the local commtnity, but four years down the lind and

:18:43. > :18:47.many people who live nearby still aren't convinced. Councillor John

:18:48. > :18:51.Sutton age represents the concerns of many residents who live hn nearby

:18:52. > :18:56.villages. He says health issues are number one. There are a lot of

:18:57. > :19:04.worries about what will comd out of the chimneys. I want all my people

:19:05. > :19:08.here to breathe fresh air. This think I can't guarantee to `nybody

:19:09. > :19:14.that we will breathe fresh `ir. This isn't yet a done deal, it h`s to go

:19:15. > :19:18.before a full council meeting this month, but even protesters today

:19:19. > :19:21.admit it's looking very likdly that in the near future, nestled in the

:19:22. > :19:25.countryside will sit a wastd incinerator.

:19:26. > :19:28.Onto the cricket and Yorkshhre have started well in their bid to clinch

:19:33. > :19:38.the opening session, putting on 118 before lunch.

:19:39. > :19:42.Lees was the first to go, though, for 86, but Lyth went on to get

:19:43. > :19:44.a century, his sixth of the campaign, and follows on from his

:20:08. > :20:11.Jane raised nearly ?2 million for charity,

:20:12. > :20:16.taking on huge physical challenges, before she died from cancer.

:20:17. > :20:19.This year's half marathon h`d to be cancelled at the last minutd because

:20:20. > :20:38.Two Jane Tomlinson. Jane Tollinson became a national icon, raising

:20:44. > :20:48.suffering with the disease, she took on huge challenges. Iron man,

:20:49. > :20:53.marathons and even cycled across America. Since her death, hdr legacy

:20:54. > :20:59.has been carried forward by husband Mike, who today confirmed the Jane

:21:00. > :21:04.Tomlinson Run for All charity as the new organiser for Sheffield's annual

:21:05. > :21:07.half marathon. When Jane was alive she got some of her best support

:21:08. > :21:12.from South Yorkshire and whdnever she cycled through the area, lots of

:21:13. > :21:16.people came out to see her. From our point of view, it's a great

:21:17. > :21:21.opportunity to raise as much money for local charities as we c`n. The

:21:22. > :21:25.race made headlines in April when organisers cancelled the run at the

:21:26. > :21:37.last minute after a mix`up with the water supplier. As a result the

:21:38. > :21:40.Tomlinson charity has offerdd those who entered this year a discounted

:21:41. > :21:42.entry for next year's event. Anybody who ran last year, we are offering

:21:43. > :21:43.discounted entry. To acknowledge some of the difficulties thdy faced

:21:44. > :21:48.last year. This is a fresh start. Paintings that lay forgotten

:21:49. > :21:50.for 70 years have been restored and put on display at the Clothworkers

:21:51. > :21:54.Hall in the University of Ldeds The watercolours

:21:55. > :21:55.by influential artist Walter Foster show typical Yorkshire beauty spots

:21:56. > :22:20.and landmarks, as Cathy Killick s Yorkshire at the turn of thd last

:22:21. > :22:26.century, caught in glowing watercolour by an artist so gifted

:22:27. > :22:31.he was made a teacher at thd age of 12. Walter Foster was the son of a

:22:32. > :22:35.printer from Bingley. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of

:22:36. > :22:40.Art at 16 and painted throughout his youth. But just as he was g`ining a

:22:41. > :22:45.reputation, disaster struck. Walter was sitting on a windowsill here at

:22:46. > :22:50.his home in Bingley painting the window frame when he heard his

:22:51. > :22:56.brother calling from below. He lent out, overbalanced and fell. He died

:22:57. > :23:00.ten years later ` ten days later. His widow, overcome with grhef,

:23:01. > :23:06.packed up all his paintings and put them in the attic, where thdy lay

:23:07. > :23:11.undisturbed for 70 years. They were found by his grandson Dave, covered

:23:12. > :23:17.in dust and soot, but their quality shone through. That moment when I

:23:18. > :23:22.went in and there was a portfolio by the side of the tank, a box of

:23:23. > :23:26.watercolours and various oil paintings. It was a life ch`nging

:23:27. > :23:34.moment. The colours were zinging right through. Very special moment.

:23:35. > :23:38.Some of the best loved spots in Yorkshire inspired him. Herd are the

:23:39. > :23:44.ruins of old and Abbey and the fishermen's cottages at Robhns who

:23:45. > :23:48.at bay. What a discovery. A wonderful, wonderful artist that

:23:49. > :23:54.captures the coastline. Absolutely wonderful colours and light. A real

:23:55. > :23:59.discovery. The artist's famhly hope the show will bring faster's work

:24:00. > :24:07.greater recognition, allowing his reputation to grow once mord.

:24:08. > :24:09.They are truly stunning. Thd chairman of the Home Affairs Select

:24:10. > :24:14.Committee says he will be writing to the Home Secretary to see if there

:24:15. > :24:18.is a possibility of emergency legislation to remove the South

:24:19. > :24:23.Yorkshire Police and crime commission Shaun Wright. Th`t's the

:24:24. > :24:27.breaking news tonight. Paul, a clear night?

:24:28. > :24:33.I think so, the super Moon will be out. A lovely day across Yorkshire,

:24:34. > :24:45.20 Celsius. Let me show you a couple of pictures you've sent in.

:24:46. > :24:51.Something Phil mentioned last night, this was part of the flyover, the

:24:52. > :25:01.Lancaster bombers. These ard Spitfires or hurricanes. Kedp the

:25:02. > :25:06.pictures coming. Another be`utiful September day to come tomorrow. Dry

:25:07. > :25:10.with some sunshine. High prdssure dominating the weather, as ht will

:25:11. > :25:15.do through the weekend and probably the first half of next week as well.

:25:16. > :25:23.We've had lots of sunshine, some cloud has come down from thd North

:25:24. > :25:27.West, but 20 Celsius. Very good for the middle of September. Fine and

:25:28. > :25:32.bright. Overnight, another puiet night across Yorkshire and the North

:25:33. > :25:40.Midlands. With light winds, you can expect mist and patchy fog. Five or

:25:41. > :25:46.six in rear roller areas, in towns and cities, close to double figures.

:25:47. > :25:55.` rural areas. The sun rises at 6:30am. Beautiful start for many, a

:25:56. > :26:00.bit of mist and fog to clear, then dry and bright with some good spells

:26:01. > :26:04.of sunshine. There will be some fairways are cloud bubbling up from

:26:05. > :26:08.time to time, but it won't spoil what will be another lovely

:26:09. > :26:13.September day. A gentle easterly breeze means temperatures are little

:26:14. > :26:23.lower along the coast. It whll be a large part of Yorkshire that reaches

:26:24. > :26:28.20 or 21 Celsius. Thursday should get off to a bright and sunny

:26:29. > :26:33.start. Eastern areas will sde more cloud gently pushing in frol the

:26:34. > :26:37.North Sea. Friday at the wedkend, more cloud across Yorkshire, but it

:26:38. > :26:41.will remain dry and bright `nd there should be some pleasant September

:26:42. > :26:49.sunshine. Lovely at the moment. I'll be back

:26:50. > :26:51.at 8pm and 10:25pm. From all of us, see you later, good evening.
