:00:08. > :00:09.Good evening and welcome to Wednesday's Look North.

:00:10. > :00:11.Rotherham's missing child sex abuse documents.

:00:12. > :00:14.Two senior officials at the council tell MPs that key reports h`ve

:00:15. > :00:20.Ready to leave but still on full alert.

:00:21. > :00:22.I've been given exclusive access to the biggest army base in Afghanistan

:00:23. > :00:26.as Yorkshire soldiers help to close it down.

:00:27. > :00:30.Beryl Burton gets the Freedom of Leeds nearly two decades

:00:31. > :00:45.Another lovely day. 21 degrdes was the highest temperature in our

:00:46. > :00:53.region. How long will it last? Join me for the latest forecast.

:00:54. > :00:55.Tonight, the missing reports into child sexual abuse in Rotherham

:00:56. > :01:01.It has emerged that two filds from two separate years have dis`ppeared

:01:02. > :01:06.The information came out in a second day of questionhng at

:01:07. > :01:08.Westminster as MPs grilled two of the council's most senior officers.

:01:09. > :01:10.The chief executive couldn't say if they'd been destroyed

:01:11. > :01:13.and the head of children's services said she didn't know

:01:14. > :01:15.whether it had been a delibdrate attempt to suppress information

:01:16. > :01:30.The question of the day. Had hundreds of young girl is bding put

:01:31. > :01:37.at risk in Rotherham becausd there had been shockingly few prosecutions

:01:38. > :01:44.of the criminal gangs groomhng and abusing them? Is that right? They

:01:45. > :01:53.carried on raping children? Answer the question. Did the perpetrators

:01:54. > :01:58.carry on? That is right, isn't it? Please, and so the question. The

:01:59. > :02:17.question. They didn't. The rapists seem to have carried on. Yesterday,

:02:18. > :02:22.there were concerns issued by MPs. Today, the revelations that copies

:02:23. > :02:26.of a series of reports which many say prove the authorities knew the

:02:27. > :02:32.extent of the problem for more than ten years could not be found in the

:02:33. > :02:46.council's files. They are not within the archives. I have asked to see

:02:47. > :02:50.please `` previous informathon. Is there a suggestion that these have

:02:51. > :02:59.been actively destroyed? I do not know. They don't appear to be there.

:03:00. > :03:08.A senior elected councillor she reported to did not pass on the

:03:09. > :03:13.information. Until 2010, th`t councillor was Shaun Wright,

:03:14. > :03:20.Yorkshire's police and I colmission. Do you feel let down by Shatn

:03:21. > :03:21.Wright? In hindsight, yes I am. The committee will report to Parliament

:03:22. > :03:23.in the next few weeks. Yesterday,

:03:24. > :03:24.South Yorkshire's beleaguerdd Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright

:03:25. > :03:27.said he had had support frol MPs and other colleagues for his decision to

:03:28. > :03:30.stay in the job, despite thd He is now facing the threat

:03:31. > :03:34.of emergency laws being considered Our reporter has been

:03:35. > :03:48.following the story in Rothdrham. What else can you tell us?

:03:49. > :03:55.Well, just before we get onto Shaun Wright, some more details from

:03:56. > :03:58.Rotherham council meeting today Plenty of noisy interjections from

:03:59. > :04:04.the public gallery. The new leader of the council, Paul Lakin,

:04:05. > :04:13.announced several measures which he thought would make a distinction

:04:14. > :04:19.from the past. There will bd a ban on all international travel. He

:04:20. > :04:24.hopes to save ?120,000 which you can invest in to victim support

:04:25. > :04:27.services. The local governmdnt Association is coming in to help

:04:28. > :04:34.oversee improvements. That `side, the latest group of people have

:04:35. > :04:38.called for Shaun Wright to resign. If a week is a long time in

:04:39. > :04:48.politics, a fortnight in thhs man's shoes masts feel like forevdr. We do

:04:49. > :04:58.not accept that. Let me ask my question. We don't accept any of

:04:59. > :05:07.that. The home affairs select committee stated his evidence was

:05:08. > :05:12.unconvincing. From the Primd Minister down, there are calls for

:05:13. > :05:17.his resignation. He spent fhve years as the councillor overseen xoung

:05:18. > :05:22.people services in Rotherhal. He has made things worse by hanging on and

:05:23. > :05:29.hanging on. I can't underst`nd why he is still there. He should go It

:05:30. > :05:41.is disgusting. I don't understand this. This has really upset this

:05:42. > :05:53.town. Yesterday, Shaun Wright said he had received support frol MPs. 12

:05:54. > :06:04.MPs said they did not support them and another two have not replied. It

:06:05. > :06:11.would be difficult to force people to resign without compensathon.

:06:12. > :06:18.Resigning would probably be the easy option. Deserted by former `llies, a

:06:19. > :06:23.pariah to his political party, his next file could perhaps be his

:06:24. > :06:29.toughest yet, at the hands of the public. Tomorrow, he will appear in

:06:30. > :06:34.front of the police and the panel, the body who scrutinise his work.

:06:35. > :06:40.They have said it will be open to the public and they will be able to

:06:41. > :06:44.ask him direct questions. Shaun Wright said he would not be

:06:45. > :06:46.available for an interview today, but said he would hope to speak to

:06:47. > :06:48.us tomorrow after the meeting. Joining me now

:06:49. > :06:50.from Westminster is the chahrman of today's local government hearing

:06:51. > :07:00.Sheffield MP Clive Betts. Thank you for joining us. Shaun

:07:01. > :07:04.Wright is still in his job today. Two lead councillors are sthll in

:07:05. > :07:09.their jobs. What would you like to see happen? I have been writing a

:07:10. > :07:15.letter to all those concerndd today. The new leader, Paul Lakin,

:07:16. > :07:20.has announced that Rotherhal need some outside help and urgently.

:07:21. > :07:22.Probably from the Local Govdrnment Association, so there can bd an

:07:23. > :07:27.independent look over the responsibility of all officdrs

:07:28. > :07:32.involved in the failure of the protection of children in Rotherham

:07:33. > :07:37.over the years. That includds those currently working there and those

:07:38. > :07:40.who have left. All must be investigated and held to account.

:07:41. > :07:53.That has to be done by independent experts coming in. Is the blame does

:07:54. > :07:57.being passed on? She said rdports were not sent to Cabinet.

:07:58. > :08:03.Therefore, councillors as a whole were not aware of the probldm. She

:08:04. > :08:09.said that Shaun Wright had stopped the reports from being passdd on.

:08:10. > :08:13.There are no hundreds of yotng people in Rotherham who havd been

:08:14. > :08:17.exploited and abused. They desperately need help. The council

:08:18. > :08:22.admitted they don't know who all the people are and there are no files on

:08:23. > :08:25.them. There is a massive amount of work to be done to identify these

:08:26. > :08:29.young people and help them. Rotherham needs help. It nedds

:08:30. > :08:35.resources. The council needs to put in place a plan of action and then

:08:36. > :08:41.say to the government how mtch help they need to help those young people

:08:42. > :08:46.are being abused, exploited and ignored for too long. We had that

:08:47. > :08:52.reports have gone missing from the cancel. What will you do with that

:08:53. > :08:58.information? That is somethhng which the Local Government Secret`ry will

:08:59. > :09:05.be sending people in to invdstigate. This should be a separate enquiry

:09:06. > :09:08.which I have called for. Th`t clearly needs to investigatd

:09:09. > :09:12.properly and independently what happened to these reports, where

:09:13. > :09:16.they are, and then look at what was done about the information `nd

:09:17. > :09:28.whether it was available at the time. Should Joyce Thacker be

:09:29. > :09:36.stepping down? There should be a proper evaluation of all actions to

:09:37. > :09:37.see who is involved and who is accountable. Thank you for joining

:09:38. > :09:39.us. Near misses on the motorway `

:09:40. > :09:42.the new campaign warning drhvers to Next tonight, within the next few

:09:43. > :09:46.weeks the huge army base in Afghanistan will close, signalling

:09:47. > :09:49.the end of British and Yorkshire Look North has been given exclusive

:09:50. > :09:53.access to Camp Bastion to sde one of the most complicated withdrawals

:09:54. > :09:55.from a war zone in history. Harry has been to meet the Xorkshire

:09:56. > :09:59.soldiers who are playing a key role Operation Herrick,

:10:00. > :10:10.as the campaign in Afghanistan is 453 servicemen

:10:11. > :10:15.and women have lost their lhves fighting the Taliban, many of those

:10:16. > :10:19.were Yorkshire born and bred. But now the battle is being taken

:10:20. > :10:24.over by the Afghan National Army and the main task

:10:25. > :10:27.for British forces is to kedp Camp The figures involved

:10:28. > :10:33.in this operation are incredible. Already the number of peopld

:10:34. > :10:35.on the camp has fallen Of 1,800 vehicles, just 600 are

:10:36. > :10:46.yet to be returned home to the UK. And of a whopping 12,000 containers

:10:47. > :10:49.which carried equipment and stores, 400 will go home,

:10:50. > :10:55.the rest will be sold, In the first of our special reports,

:10:56. > :11:17.we take a look at life at Camp Bastion may be in drawdown but

:11:18. > :11:23.these men are far from that. Ready for action right up until the end of

:11:24. > :11:26.their tour. There will be no decrease in the level of protection

:11:27. > :11:31.afforded by the Squadron here at Camp Bastion. There are those here

:11:32. > :11:36.who are focused on logistic`l effort to send kit and equipment b`ck to

:11:37. > :11:44.the United Kingdom. But, for us we are one had percent `` 100%

:11:45. > :11:51.committed to the defence of Afghanistan and will be no reduction

:11:52. > :12:03.in that until we leave. The Desert is returned to the Afghans. 400`600

:12:04. > :12:12.people were here. There was an infrastructure. Now there is nothing

:12:13. > :12:23.there at all. It is safe and tidy. All vehicles get a fool valdt. Not

:12:24. > :12:28.just cleaned, but a fool decontamination. They are

:12:29. > :12:34.disinfecting everything before it moves to the compound and then

:12:35. > :12:46.eventually it will go on a plane and head back to Great Britain. This is

:12:47. > :12:53.a device that saves countless lives. It will be used again. It is like

:12:54. > :13:03.picking up the Hall of Readhng and moving it back to the UK. There are

:13:04. > :13:14.lots of vehicles. We are knocking them back about 100 a month. Then I

:13:15. > :13:21.got a tour of the accommodation This has been my home for the last

:13:22. > :13:27.five months. What do you do in the evening? There are six of us in

:13:28. > :13:35.your. We will perhaps play ` game or do something. For the most part

:13:36. > :13:44.people will watch a film or talk to relatives back home over Skxpe. It

:13:45. > :13:57.is a routine that you get used to. You have been here for 11 months.

:13:58. > :14:03.What is it like? There used to be ten choices for food. It is less

:14:04. > :14:13.now. But we are in the middle of the desert. There is entertainmdnt. We

:14:14. > :14:23.get a live feed of the BBC. We can keep in touch. You say therd is a

:14:24. > :14:33.live feed of BBC London. And you are from Sheffield? ! Yes, we mhss you,

:14:34. > :14:39.Harry. Thank you. How has this changed since you have been here?

:14:40. > :14:47.Dramatically. Two years ago, each of these compounds was thriving. Now we

:14:48. > :14:51.are down to the minimum. Evdry week, another camp causes and we get

:14:52. > :15:00.smaller and smaller as we come towards the end. Do you worry about

:15:01. > :15:07.what might happen here? Yes, we talk about it. You hope that it will not

:15:08. > :15:13.go to waste and be used productively once we have gone. We have been here

:15:14. > :15:20.so long, we have done so much, that for it to just go to waste would be

:15:21. > :15:26.bad. Camp Bastion is about to close. But let's not forget this. 453

:15:27. > :15:31.service men and women never got the chance to go home. But their

:15:32. > :15:35.memorial will live on. The 03 brass plaques behind me will go to the

:15:36. > :15:43.National Arboretum in Staffordshire. I am sure you will agree, the words

:15:44. > :15:49.they are some it all up. Incredible. That is the first time

:15:50. > :15:52.we have been out to see what happens there.

:15:53. > :15:55.We will have more from Camp Bastion over the next few days.

:15:56. > :15:57.Tomorrow, we meet the staff at 34 Field Hospital.

:15:58. > :16:00.During operations in Afghanistan the York`basdd unit

:16:01. > :16:03.has become the world leader in the treatment of traumatic injuries

:16:04. > :16:20.And on Friday we will be finding out more about the protection of the

:16:21. > :16:24.base and the role of the men from Squadron 34 of the RAF regilent

:16:25. > :16:32.The safety of the base is in their hands on the ground and in the air.

:16:33. > :16:33.An unannounced inspection of Bradford Royal Infirmary found

:16:34. > :16:36.there are not enough staff to ensure patients are safe and their

:16:37. > :16:40.The Care Quality Commission published a report

:16:41. > :16:43.They found morale was low, nursing leadership was weak and

:16:44. > :16:46.The Trust acknowledged that the extent of

:16:47. > :16:49.the staffing shortages had not been fully recognised and recruitment had

:16:50. > :16:53.Drugs and suspected fake money have been seized during a crackdown

:16:54. > :16:58.214 vehicles were checked as part of a major cross`border polhce

:16:59. > :17:00.operation involving seven police forces.

:17:01. > :17:02.The multi`force initiative hs designed to gather shared

:17:03. > :17:03.intelligence about travelling criminals, and to

:17:04. > :17:10.stop them carrying out opportunistic crimes in the countryside.

:17:11. > :17:16.Don't forget, there are just a few days ldft to

:17:17. > :17:19.nominate your community hero for this year's Yorkshire Awards.

:17:20. > :17:22.To nominate someone you need to tell us in under a hundred words why you

:17:23. > :17:25.think they deserve to be Yorkshire's Community Hero of 2 14.

:17:26. > :17:26.You can email us at look.north@bbc.co.uk.

:17:27. > :17:30.Write to 2 St Peter's Squard, Leeds, LS9 8AH.

:17:31. > :17:33.Or you can post on our Facebook page at BBC Look North Yorkshire.

:17:34. > :17:37.All nominations must be recdived by midnight on Monday and entrhes must

:17:38. > :17:46.I have to drive through roadworks every day on the M1 to work,

:17:47. > :17:49.and they can be annoying as most motorists will probably agrde.

:17:50. > :17:52.But have you ever thought about those who are carrying out

:17:53. > :17:58.10 road workers suffered serious injuries last year and with more

:17:59. > :18:00.than 32 separate road schemds across our motorways the Highways

:18:01. > :18:03.Agency is now launching a c`mpaign to keep their workers safe.

:18:04. > :18:08.Our reporter has been to medt some of the workers involved

:18:09. > :18:16.in serious incidents on the roadside.

:18:17. > :18:22.Reckless driving through ro`dworks. A lorry driver ignores warnhng signs

:18:23. > :18:27.and doesn't slow down. Workdrs were lucky not to get hurt. At this job

:18:28. > :18:37.is high risk. Last year, ten workers were seriously heart on the

:18:38. > :18:43.roadside. Although traffic jams can be frustrating, people are being

:18:44. > :18:48.urged to take care. Here, they have set up some scenarios to show was

:18:49. > :18:54.the dangers that would workdrs face and what is being done to hdlp

:18:55. > :18:58.protect them. Steve was in ` collision recently and was off work

:18:59. > :19:06.for weeks when his back was injured. 18 months ago, Van driver slashed

:19:07. > :19:24.into the back of a vehicle like this. . This crass the Mac crash

:19:25. > :19:33.cushion probably saved his life Drivers can also become verbally

:19:34. > :19:41.abusive. We challenge someone and asked them to go back. He started

:19:42. > :19:49.getting aggressive. He said he would get his friends round and

:19:50. > :19:57.everything. Cameras strapped to the chest of workers is a new invention.

:19:58. > :20:03.That means they can capture incidents on camera and use it as

:20:04. > :20:05.evidence. The Highways Agency say it could be much safer if somewhat

:20:06. > :20:20.wrists just slowed down. Nearly there ` after a great day

:20:21. > :20:23.with bat and ball, Yorkshird's cricketers are on the verge of their

:20:24. > :20:26.first championship win sincd 20 1. And cyclist Beryl Burton gets

:20:27. > :20:29.the ultimate honour from thd City One of the most important mdetings

:20:30. > :20:38.in the British horse racing calendar There were blue skies for the

:20:39. > :20:50.opening of the St Leger Festival. It offers over ?2 million

:20:51. > :20:53.in prize money and features the St Leger itself ` the oldest

:20:54. > :20:56.of Britain's five Classic r`ces We will be there tomorrow for

:20:57. > :20:59.Ladies Day and big crowds are Cricket now and tonight it certainly

:21:00. > :21:03.feels as if Yorkshire are on the brink of becoming Cotnty

:21:04. > :21:07.Champions, just two days into their Yes, more big hitting from the

:21:08. > :21:13.batters. And late in the day, crucial catches

:21:14. > :21:16.have been held to put Yorkshire Here is our reporter with

:21:17. > :21:33.the action. Another day dominated by Yorkshire

:21:34. > :21:38.and if, as appears likely, they clinched the County Championship,

:21:39. > :21:42.this is the way to do it. The stubborn opening innings lasted

:21:43. > :21:51.nearly two days. Gary Ballance was sent through an early lunch one run

:21:52. > :22:13.short of his century. But others picked up where he left off. 16

:22:14. > :22:17.boundaries from Bresnan. Already, four Nottinghamshire batsmen are

:22:18. > :22:29.back in the pavilion followhng a devastating Brian Lara. Notts are

:22:30. > :22:38.58`4 at close of play. Well played to Brooks.

:22:39. > :22:40.There were emotional scenes at Leeds Civic Hall today

:22:41. > :22:43.as the family of one of Yorkshire's greatest sportswomen saw her given

:22:44. > :22:47.Beryl Burton lived in Morlex and was an amateur cyclist who

:22:48. > :22:50.Today the place that hosted Le Grand Depart posthumouslx granted

:22:51. > :23:09.She died 18 years ago, but today, Beryl Burton was finally honoured

:23:10. > :23:18.back in her home city. Her daughter and husband were delighted to

:23:19. > :23:22.receive the honour. She is the first sports person to be given the

:23:23. > :23:31.freedom of the city. I am joined by her daughter and husband. What you

:23:32. > :23:44.think when you see that? I `m lost for words, quite honestly. To see

:23:45. > :23:53.her name there, it is just wonderful. And amateur rider, Beryl

:23:54. > :24:03.Burton became 13 time national champion and held the best British

:24:04. > :24:08.record for 26 consecutive ydars I even broke the men's record. Was one

:24:09. > :24:14.of the biggest achievements. She is a Yorkshire sporting hero, `nd

:24:15. > :24:25.national sporting hero, but to use years just mum. That's corrdct. ``

:24:26. > :24:29.to you, she is just mum. Her sporting career is tremendots. I

:24:30. > :24:33.appreciate that more now th`n I did when I was a teenager. I don't

:24:34. > :24:40.believe there will ever be `nother Beryl Burton. She was so good. Beryl

:24:41. > :24:44.Burton is gone, but with thhs posthumous honour, she will never be

:24:45. > :24:54.forgotten by the people of the city of Leeds.

:24:55. > :25:07.I interviewed her in 1982. She was an incredible lady.

:25:08. > :25:12.Credit where credit is due. I got that forecast for Afghanist`n spot

:25:13. > :25:18.on! Let's look at some picttres from 7am this morning. One looking

:25:19. > :25:27.south`east. The other looking West in Scarborough. You can see the last

:25:28. > :25:36.of the Superman from last nhght `` sober million.

:25:37. > :25:43.Another very pleasant day tomorrow. High`pressure dominate into the

:25:44. > :25:47.weekend. A little bit more of an easterly breeze. It is workhng fine

:25:48. > :25:56.and will be further sunny spells. 21 degrees this afternoon. A bdautiful

:25:57. > :26:02.evening right across Yorkshhre. Then another very quiet night to follow.

:26:03. > :26:12.It will turn this day, therd will be some fog just like this morning Low

:26:13. > :26:22.cloud in places. Temperaturds will be lower in rural parts. I grey

:26:23. > :26:33.start in places. There will be some mist and fog. It is a bright day,

:26:34. > :26:39.and sunny spells will come through. It should feel pleasantly w`rm.

:26:40. > :26:44.Temperatures a couple of degrees down. And onshore breeze along the

:26:45. > :26:52.coast means are high in Scarborough of 15 degrees. Today in the awk 21
