:01:07. > :01:10.South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wrhght has
:01:11. > :01:16.resigned over the scandal of sexual abuse in Rotherhal.
:01:17. > :01:18.It's three weeks since a report showed 1400 hundred
:01:19. > :01:21.children had been exploited by gangs of men in the town over manx years.
:01:22. > :01:25.Mr Wright was the councillor responsible
:01:26. > :01:30.for Children's Services between 2005 and 2010 and was coming unddr
:01:31. > :01:33.increasing pressure to step down, including from the Prime Minister.
:01:34. > :01:36.In a moment we'll be asking who will take over, but first
:01:37. > :01:49.Shaun Wright is duly elected as Police and Crime Commission for the
:01:50. > :01:53.South Yorkshire Police area. When he came to power, only if you beyond
:01:54. > :02:01.rather run would have had Shaun Wright. His victory was by local
:02:02. > :02:04.MPs. Today as he resigns, hd is a national name, keep RIF to his party

:02:54. > :02:55.collective responsibility. He remained defiant when the Prime
:02:56. > :02:59.Minister called on him to stand down. The rates decision wotld be
:03:00. > :03:08.for him to stand down and t`ke on responsibility. He faced a committee
:03:09. > :03:14.last week. On oath, he said he had received messages of support from
:03:15. > :03:19.MPs. Not one external report raised it as a significant issue. He was
:03:20. > :03:23.told he was the least convincing witness ever to appear before them.
:03:24. > :03:30.I've had to live with us for 12 years! He faced a police and crime
:03:31. > :03:36.panel meeting last week including victims of abuse. Maggie Wilson says
:03:37. > :03:41.the police's failure to tackle grooming led to the death of her
:03:42. > :03:45.daughter Laura. I'm glad he has resigned but it shouldn't h`ve come
:03:46. > :03:54.to that. He should have actdd on everything that he knew. He gets a

:05:58. > :05:59.There was a ?750,000 bill for a demonstration in Rotherham that was
:06:00. > :06:07.directly against him which lust be extremely embarrassing. We heard
:06:08. > :06:11.today from the select committee that has been investigating and heard his
:06:12. > :06:16.evidence under oath. They are suggesting that maybe there are more
:06:17. > :06:21.investigations to come as a result of what he has said to them. This is
:06:22. > :06:27.what Keith Vaz, the chairman of the select committee, said. There are
:06:28. > :06:29.There are concerns about the fact that information that
:06:30. > :06:31.we received from Mr Wright was not necessarily reflected in thd
:06:32. > :06:37.We will need to look into that and that is one of the reasons why we
:06:38. > :06:44.It is essential that we takd steps to ensure that effective action is
:06:45. > :07:08.the wader reaction has been relief. He was elected as a Labour
:07:09. > :07:12.councillor `` wider. The re`ction from the Shadow Home Secret`ry and
:07:13. > :07:15.local NPR now they can get on with the real job, stopping crimhnal

:07:55. > :08:00.waiting in the wings are parties like UKIP who clearly are going to
:08:01. > :08:06.push this as hard as they c`n. They see Labour has had its eyes closed
:08:07. > :08:12.and its time there was a new party. What we could be seeing as the
:08:13. > :08:13.chance of, and South Yorkshhre, the Police and Crime Commissiondr that
:08:14. > :08:15.isn't from Labour. Well, joining us now is the Labour
:08:16. > :08:35.MP for Rotherham, Sarah Chalpion. A by`election is probably the last
:08:36. > :08:38.thing you need, Sarah. The thing for me is that Shaun Wright was under
:08:39. > :08:43.the Labour banner but he didn't represent a labour that I'm aware
:08:44. > :08:47.of. Labour is about equalitx and protecting the vulnerable and
:08:48. > :08:50.creating a just society. Gohng forward, I think the best mdasure be
:08:51. > :08:54.representing Labour is the person who's going serve the community
:08:55. > :08:59.representing those values as best as possible. I don't just want another
:09:00. > :09:01.MP or retired police officer, I want someone with a track record of
:09:02. > :09:10.serving South Yorkshire's communities. The Labour council and
:09:11. > :09:16.Rotherham `` in Rotherham h`sn't serve the community well. You can't
:09:17. > :09:18.have gained momentum and I don't think the electorate are gohng to
:09:19. > :09:25.look fairly on what Labour have done in Rotherham. I can completdly
:09:26. > :09:28.understand people's frustrations and that is why the party quickly
:09:29. > :09:33.suspended for councillors that we think we'll involved at the time. We
:09:34. > :09:45.need to take responsibility, we are still investigating. What I think is
:09:46. > :09:48.it was staff, they had governance responsibilities and I think it is
:09:49. > :09:51.right we should come down h`rd on them because clearly they h`ve
:09:52. > :09:54.neglected their duties. Shatn Wright with a cabinet member for children
:09:55. > :09:59.and young people at the timd so that is why we started calling for him to
:10:00. > :10:04.resign because he, to be quhte honest, was representing hilself,

:10:29. > :10:35.politician in that post will mean a political debate rather than who
:10:36. > :10:47.looks after us both. Who wotld you like to see go for the Labotr seat?
