:00:00. > :00:00.Good evening and welcome to a special Look North.

:00:07. > :00:07.On the programme tonight, remembering Ann Maguire,

:00:08. > :00:20.an inspirational teacher st`bbed to death in her classroom.

:00:21. > :00:21.Students, friends, colleagues and family celebrate

:00:22. > :00:28.Ann's life in a moving memorial service at Leeds Town Hall.

:00:29. > :00:35.We are here today to say we miss you. We are here to say we love you.

:00:36. > :00:38.But we really, really would like to say thank you. Good night, God

:00:39. > :00:43.bless. APPLAUSE And crowds too outside the

:00:44. > :00:44.Town Hall. Hundreds of people, many who didn't

:00:45. > :00:57.know her, watch on the big screens Just very upset about it. She seemed

:00:58. > :00:59.a very beautiful person and our heart goes out to the familx. Very

:01:00. > :01:02.much. Sorry. We'll hear more tributes

:01:03. > :01:05.and also talk about Ann's ldgacy, a fund which has been set up

:01:06. > :01:17.by her family to help young people And before the showers developed,

:01:18. > :01:21.most of us all some sunshind, as you can see from this picture in York

:01:22. > :01:22.this morning. I will be back later in the programme with the ddtails

:01:23. > :01:36.for the week ahead. Miss Maguire, like,

:01:37. > :01:38.sort of showed me the way, gave me a lot of time when,

:01:39. > :01:41.to be fair, she didn't have to. She wouldn't let you take no

:01:42. > :01:44.for an answer. If she believed in you,

:01:45. > :01:46.you believed in yourself, rdally. She always just taught you to get

:01:47. > :01:50.up and carry on, just keep going. Definitely, definitely made me

:01:51. > :01:57.the kind of person I am tod`y. Many said she was

:01:58. > :01:59.more than just a teacher. And whether it was Mrs Maguhre's

:02:00. > :02:02.choir, her Spanish lessons or her ski trips, she was simply

:02:03. > :02:08.inspirational to her students. The death of Ann Maguire

:02:09. > :02:10.in the classroom at Corpus Christi Catholic College

:02:11. > :02:12.in Leeds in April was devastating. A boy who was 15

:02:13. > :02:15.at the time is due to go on trial Few events in all

:02:16. > :02:20.my many years here at Look North But today it was all about

:02:21. > :02:24.celebrating her life and he`ring the Her family were among

:02:25. > :02:29.the hundreds of people at a memorial For those inside Leeds Town Hall, it

:02:30. > :02:40.was an emotional, personal journey. Outside, for hundreds of others

:02:41. > :02:42.many of whom probably didn't even know

:02:43. > :02:45.her, it was simply a chance to pay Today, though,

:02:46. > :02:48.was all about celebration. It was a service that captured

:02:49. > :02:58.the spirit of Ann. One of the things that has struck me

:02:59. > :03:03.in the last few months is how many people who work for the council who

:03:04. > :03:11.represent the council, knew Ann And not only did she teach them

:03:12. > :03:15.she actually inspired them to have One of the features

:03:16. > :03:25.of this service was the heart and Uplifting?

:03:26. > :03:34.Just a lot. This guitar`wielding,

:03:35. > :03:55.choir`conducting, Spanish`speaking, prayer`encouraging,

:03:56. > :04:02.vivacious presence in our lhves and in school is who we remdmber

:04:03. > :04:04.today with the most profound Ann had her own views

:04:05. > :04:25.about children. Every child is different and you

:04:26. > :04:38.have to adapt your approach to each one, tuning in with their ndeds

:04:39. > :04:48.and encouraging them to asphre. Whether she was chasing homdwork,

:04:49. > :04:52.singing in Spanish or soothhng teenage anxieties,

:04:53. > :04:56.Ann rightly lived up to her accolade Ann would have loved this,

:04:57. > :05:10.Potter's Hand sung by the choir Then this moving tribute from one

:05:11. > :05:16.of her colleagues. Ann never believed she was

:05:17. > :05:19.in any way special or different But,

:05:20. > :05:27.to colleagues and to generations of Corpus Christi pupils, she will

:05:28. > :05:34.remain very special indeed. She acted justly, she loved tenderly

:05:35. > :05:39.and she worked humbly with her God. Right at the very end, one of Ann's

:05:40. > :05:48.nephews, who she raised as her own, We are here today to say we miss

:05:49. > :05:56.you, we are here to say we love you, but we really,

:05:57. > :06:00.really would like to say th`nk you. Two young people

:06:01. > :06:14.in the service just said to me before I came out, towards

:06:15. > :06:17.the end of it, that they felt she was with them today, she always was,

:06:18. > :06:20.she always supported them. I think they are absolutely right,

:06:21. > :06:25.it was that kind of day. Well for those who couldn't get

:06:26. > :06:39.inside the town hall, there was thd chance

:06:40. > :06:42.to watch the whole service outside. Spencer Stokes joined the htndreds

:06:43. > :06:45.of people ` many of whom didn't know her ` but wanted to pay

:06:46. > :06:57.their last respects to Ann Laguire. They queued around the town Hall

:06:58. > :07:01.this morning waiting for thd doors to open, pupils, colleagues,

:07:02. > :07:07.friends, here to remember a woman known to four generations. @ former

:07:08. > :07:11.teacher taught at Corpus Christi. He left 18 years ago but felt he had to

:07:12. > :07:15.be here today at the servicd. I miss her greatly. I just feel it is

:07:16. > :07:19.hugely unjust that somebody who made such a massive commitment to the

:07:20. > :07:23.teaching profession and to live at large was denied that opportunity to

:07:24. > :07:31.have a very well earned rethrement with her family. Students who had

:07:32. > :07:37.been taught by Ann stood in groups or with parents. Kirsty Kennedy and

:07:38. > :07:42.her friends took their GCSEs just weeks after Ann died. It is never

:07:43. > :07:47.going to go away, really, is it But we are here to celebrate her life

:07:48. > :07:50.today. For some a celebration, for others a commemoration. 1200 inside

:07:51. > :07:55.the town Hall and hundreds lore watching the service relayed to

:07:56. > :07:58.those outside. Many of thosd in the town Hall today new Ann Magtire

:07:59. > :08:03.they had worked with her all been taught by her. And others who had

:08:04. > :08:07.never met her have come to the town Hall today to stand outside and see

:08:08. > :08:15.the memorial service. She sdems like such a good person, nobody deserves

:08:16. > :08:20.that. And you didn't know hdr? No, but you don't have to know somebody.

:08:21. > :08:25.I can't put it into words. She seemed a very beautiful person. Our

:08:26. > :08:34.heart goes out to the familx, very much. Sorry. As the service ended,

:08:35. > :08:36.Ann's daughter Kerry thanked those who had attended. But the

:08:37. > :08:42.overwhelming feeling here today was a city coming together to thank Ann

:08:43. > :08:48.Maguire. Wonderful, absolutdly wonderful tribute. Very emotional,

:08:49. > :08:53.but the service was just so fitting and a wonderful tribute to `

:08:54. > :08:56.wonderful woman. And the singing of the children was astonishing.

:08:57. > :08:59.For Ann's family, the incredible support for them has been a great

:09:00. > :09:01.comfort and they've thanked everyone involved in today's service.

:09:02. > :09:03.Mrs Maguire had two daughters of her own.

:09:04. > :09:06.She also brought up her two nephews after the death of their mother

:09:07. > :09:09.They all spoke to Danny Sav`ge before the service.

:09:10. > :09:19.Danny, not only the family still coming to terms with her de`th but

:09:20. > :09:24.they are also having to deal with the media attention around ht. This

:09:25. > :09:29.was a very difficult decision for them to speak out. It was. We heard

:09:30. > :09:32.in the service today that she was described as the mother of the

:09:33. > :09:38.school but she was the mothdr at home as well. Shoe was also an aunt,

:09:39. > :09:42.a grandma, so much to so many of her relatives. `` she was. Her family

:09:43. > :09:45.had not spoken before in thd last few months but they decided to do so

:09:46. > :09:49.now because of the manorial service. It was not easy for them, they

:09:50. > :09:53.thought long and hard about what they wanted to say and how they

:09:54. > :09:57.wanted to do it. On Friday dvening I went round to the house, thdy wanted

:09:58. > :10:02.to sit in the dining room to talk to me, I spoke to her daughters, and

:10:03. > :10:05.also her nephews, who were brought up by an and Don when their mother

:10:06. > :10:07.died about the gap that she had left in their lives. `` brought tp by Ann

:10:08. > :10:14.and one. She did the everyday things

:10:15. > :10:18.in a very special way. So it made her extraordinarx

:10:19. > :10:23.to people who got to know hdr. A beautiful, dedicated,

:10:24. > :10:31.hard`working individual. She had a very strong faith and that

:10:32. > :10:35.influenced her life profoundly and Many people would have seen you

:10:36. > :10:43.outside the school in the d`ys after what happened to Ann,

:10:44. > :10:46.reading the messages that h`d been left on the railings, on thd

:10:47. > :10:49.flowers, written on pupils' ties. How much of

:10:50. > :10:53.a support were all those messages? I do remember reading the mdssages

:10:54. > :11:00.and thinking how accurate they were. For young people to actuallx assess

:11:01. > :11:03.her work and her worth in the way they did, I did find

:11:04. > :11:12.that extraordinary on the d`y, yes. As one message came through it was

:11:13. > :11:15.always about Ann's dedication to her students

:11:16. > :11:17.and her willingness to go that extra Be it 20 years ago or in thd last

:11:18. > :11:28.week that she was at the school We have so many of our own little

:11:29. > :11:31.stories and memories of Mumly and we are so grateful that people shared

:11:32. > :11:34.theirs because that has allowed us to see her through their eyds and

:11:35. > :11:37.also add those memories to our own banks, so we have even

:11:38. > :11:40.more to remember her for. I still read them on occasion

:11:41. > :11:42.and receive a great deal So they are important and they

:11:43. > :11:54.are treasured by us now, yes. She was a special teacher to

:11:55. > :11:57.so many pupils over the years and she was obviously speci`l in

:11:58. > :12:01.her home life as well, wasn't she? Mum was always there for us,

:12:02. > :12:04.she stood by us, she was our rock, she provided support and kindness

:12:05. > :12:11.and love in whatever we did. Ann was truly the foundation

:12:12. > :12:20.of the house. The life lessons that she h`s taught

:12:21. > :12:22.us, the education and morals that she has givdn us

:12:23. > :12:26.all, that's all things that we will continue to draw from in dax`to`day

:12:27. > :12:36.life and going forward. Ann was a very loving, dedicated

:12:37. > :12:45.wife and a natural mother. It was her natural mothering

:12:46. > :13:11.qualities that I think made Ann Bher family speaking very

:13:12. > :13:19.passionately there about Ann Maguire. `` her family. Fivd months

:13:20. > :13:22.on, do you think they are moving on? Five months seems like a long time

:13:23. > :13:26.to you and me but in that home it isn't, every day is very difficult

:13:27. > :13:29.and I think they are finding it very hard to move on. Because evdry day

:13:30. > :13:32.they wake up and remember and realise the reality of what has

:13:33. > :13:36.happened. I was talking to Dmma and she said it boils down to this,

:13:37. > :13:41.money doesn't come home any more. Andrew, the nephew, who livds in New

:13:42. > :13:46.Zealand, says that Ann was `lways on the doorstep to meet him whdn he

:13:47. > :13:50.came home, journey. `` Mummx doesn't come home any more. There is a

:13:51. > :13:55.longer version of that interview and you can see an extended version on

:13:56. > :14:02.BBC1 here in Yorkshire at 7:30pm this evening.

:14:03. > :14:05.Now the memorial service is over, her family are keen to keep

:14:06. > :14:08.Ann's passion alive for helping young people realise their talents.

:14:09. > :14:11.Today we heard about the Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund

:14:12. > :14:17.which has already raised more than ?25,000 and that's without `ny major

:14:18. > :14:23.Joining us now to tell us more about it

:14:24. > :14:32.?25,000 already has been rahsed and it was only officially launched

:14:33. > :14:38.today, this fund. A real testament of how many lives Ann Maguire really

:14:39. > :14:47.did touch. It is incredible. And what I think is happening is people

:14:48. > :14:51.now tap into this wonderful... Thing that Ann has created, which is that

:14:52. > :14:54.to teach and to share in a selfless way has made everybody refldct on

:14:55. > :14:58.what that means to themselvds. And I think what the girls want to do

:14:59. > :15:05.particularly Kerry and Emma, is to provide a legacy and a kind of

:15:06. > :15:09.battle and to pass on so th`t the funds and the work that thex enjoyed

:15:10. > :15:13.from their parents, to find funds to help them do what they want to do,

:15:14. > :15:18.that that could be made avahlable to a wider audience. `` kind of baton

:15:19. > :15:23.to pass on. 12 and 13`year`old children in education, focusing on

:15:24. > :15:29.performing arts and languagds. That is the main purpose of the charity.

:15:30. > :15:33.Kerry said that one of Ann's life principles as a teacher was that you

:15:34. > :15:38.can never put a limit on a child's potential. This legacy will be so

:15:39. > :15:41.important in that respect. H think so and the more I listen to the

:15:42. > :15:45.girls speaking about this charity, the more I am beginning to

:15:46. > :15:50.understand that it is not jtst about promoting something to people that

:15:51. > :15:53.already are in performing arts, languages, but thinking mord about

:15:54. > :15:58.how to make that available to people who have not even thought about it.

:15:59. > :16:00.So to awaken that motivation in the parents and the children and then

:16:01. > :16:07.make that bursary or fund available and then do what... One viddo clip

:16:08. > :16:13.that I saw today had a woman who said, I didn't know I even had that

:16:14. > :16:16.potential. And I think that is the idea of this charity, to release

:16:17. > :16:19.that potential. Very quicklx, we heard that the family are still

:16:20. > :18:07.finding it very hard to comd to terms with Ann's

:18:08. > :18:10.of a number of women on their way to a hen party

:18:11. > :18:13.in Liverpool for the bride`to`be, 24`year`old Stephanie Firth.

:18:14. > :18:16.They had just set out from their village, South Elmsall,

:18:17. > :18:22.She and the minibus driver were badly injured.

:18:23. > :18:25.A date of October 21st has been set aside for the sentencing of

:18:26. > :18:36.James Johnson after the tri`l of the lorry driver, Kevin Olldrhead.

:18:37. > :18:42.A man from Leeds who was wanted in connection with an allegdd plot

:18:43. > :18:45.to smuggle a hundred million pounds' worth of cocaine into the country

:18:46. > :18:50.The 29`year`old is the third person to be arrested in West Yorkshire

:18:51. > :18:53.following the seizure of a xacht off the coast of Ireland last week.

:18:54. > :18:55.It was carrying around a tonne of cocaine.

:18:56. > :18:58.On Saturday a man from Guisdley faced magistrates in Leeds charged

:18:59. > :19:05.Two other men from West Yorkshire and a man from Grimsby also

:19:06. > :19:11.Volunteer groups are taking over the running of around half of

:19:12. > :19:18.The idea led to protests after it was announced 18 months ago.

:19:19. > :19:20.It's because the City Counchl had to reduce its libraries budget

:19:21. > :19:25.by more than one and a half million pounds after government cuts.

:19:26. > :19:27.The Council will continue to run the Central Lending Library and 11

:19:28. > :19:34.Picturehouse Cinemas are taking over the running of the three screens at

:19:35. > :19:41.The new partnership will st`rt at the end of October

:19:42. > :19:44.and the Media Museum's director says it will ensure that cinema remains

:19:45. > :19:51.It's also hoped that the resulting investment in technology

:19:52. > :19:55.and facilities will deliver a wider programme of films to visitors.

:19:56. > :19:58.Let's turn to the weekend's football and the Huddersfield Town m`nager,

:19:59. > :20:00.Chris Powell, said it was a fantastic feeling to register his

:20:01. > :20:06.Leeds United's new head coach saw his side lose out to Brentford.

:20:07. > :20:13.Home wins for Huddersfield Town have become something of a rarity.

:20:14. > :20:17.You have to go back to the 0st of March for the last one.

:20:18. > :20:19.But Nahki Wells' stunning opener seemed to give them confidence.

:20:20. > :20:22.Though Millwall equalised, Town kept pressing, and when Harry Bunn was

:20:23. > :20:25.brought down in the box, Wells stepped up and it finished 2`1.

:20:26. > :20:27.I thought it was a very good display today from

:20:28. > :20:32.My first win as manager, my fourth match, so, yeah,

:20:33. > :20:42.Milanic took charge of Leeds United for the first time

:20:43. > :20:45.With owner Massimo Cellino watching the game with the fans,

:20:46. > :20:49.Milanic admitted he needed time to get to know his players

:20:50. > :20:53.A win at home on Wednesday night would certainly help him out.

:20:54. > :20:56.Into League 1 and the Sheffheld United fans got to congratulate one

:20:57. > :21:00.of their own when Kell Brook paraded his world title belt at half`time.

:21:01. > :21:03.Had this match been a boxing contest it might have been stopped.

:21:04. > :21:05.The Blades were dominant without landing that critical blow.

:21:06. > :21:09.Then in the 83rd minute, Gillingham scored.

:21:10. > :21:15.Michael Higdon levelled it, and then in the 97th minute, Jamie

:21:16. > :21:21.We've scored some very important late goals in the last couple

:21:22. > :21:25.And I think it is going to be a feature,

:21:26. > :21:28.if we are going to succeed then we will have to sometimes do that.

:21:29. > :21:31.It would be nice to play a bit better in the first h`lf so

:21:32. > :21:36.These are tough times for B`rnsley, who have won just twice

:21:37. > :21:39.Three second`half goals for Swindon saw them lose again.

:21:40. > :21:42.Early days but with them sitting in the relegation places,

:21:43. > :21:44.the league table doesn't make for comfortable viewing.

:21:45. > :21:47.You can see the action from your team's match on the Football League

:21:48. > :21:56.World famous violinist Nigel Kennedy has been in Scarborough

:21:57. > :21:58.at the weekend headlining the town's 12th annual jazz festival.

:21:59. > :22:02.The star of British classic`l music caused controversy when he crossed

:22:03. > :22:06.over into jazz and pop music but his visit to Scarborough saw thhs year's

:22:07. > :22:09.It's well known he doesn't do interviews often but

:22:10. > :22:20.Look North's Carla Fowler spoke exclusively to the man himsdlf.

:22:21. > :22:28.A virtuoso violinist who has sold millions of records. This wdekend,

:22:29. > :22:32.Nigel Kennedy was the headlhne act at the Scarborough Jazz Festival.

:22:33. > :22:39.The Val di's four seasons m`de him famous but he was playing j`zz when

:22:40. > :22:45.he was just 16. `` Vivaldi's four seasons. He brought his own spin to

:22:46. > :22:50.Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix in Scarborough. Fantastic therdof still

:22:51. > :22:54.live music events like this one there is a live music event

:22:55. > :23:02.promoting live artists and not this manufactured, I can't even say it on

:23:03. > :23:04.TV,... To hear and see the interaction between live audiences

:23:05. > :23:11.and live musicians in the w`y that it has been nurtured and fostered by

:23:12. > :23:15.the organisation here, fant`stic. For the home`grown Scarborotgh Jazz

:23:16. > :23:21.Festival, attracting some ddlight Nigel Kennedy is a coup. I haven't

:23:22. > :23:27.got the latest but we certahnly sold 620 weekend tickets and we have been

:23:28. > :23:31.way over 1000 tonight, which is wonderful. The man himself told us

:23:32. > :23:34.he had fallen in love with Scarborough. Waking up and just

:23:35. > :23:40.seeing what beautiful old architecture and the way th`t the

:23:41. > :23:44.natural beauty of the landscape phenomenal. And being here `t this

:23:45. > :23:48.point is lucky, because I w`s running, going for a job like I do

:23:49. > :23:52.every day, and seeing these music lovers. `` going for a run. People

:23:53. > :23:57.listening to a big band plaxing in the outdoor venue. It is just

:23:58. > :23:59.especial atmosphere. He has travelled the globe but Nigdl

:24:00. > :24:05.Kennedy has promised he will play here again.
