:00:00. > :00:07.Welcome to Look North. is all from us.

:00:08. > :00:10.On the programme tonight, a senior police officer expresses "profound

:00:11. > :00:15.regrets" over his actions on the day of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

:00:16. > :00:20.Also tonight, inquests into the deaths of 96

:00:21. > :00:31.You could say it is an official but walk out in a row over toildt

:00:32. > :00:34.You could say it is an official but when you need to go to the toilet

:00:35. > :00:35.you haven't got time to ballot the members.

:00:36. > :00:39.Revealed ` the South Yorkshire miner whose artistic

:00:40. > :00:42.skills are finally seeing the light of day.

:00:43. > :00:44.It has been a lovely end to September.

:00:45. > :00:46.This was the countryside around Howarth earlier todax.

:00:47. > :02:35.when he had entered the grotnd, he had felt on autopilot

:02:36. > :02:40.as he realised the awfulness of what had happened on the terraces.

:02:41. > :02:42.He said he felt a strong sense of responsibility,

:02:43. > :02:45.but police had been doing their absolute best, he said, to revive

:02:46. > :02:51.Roger Marshall is due to continue his evidence to the jury

:02:52. > :02:59.Well, John joins us live now from Warrington.

:03:00. > :03:08.How much more evidence is there to hear?

:03:09. > :03:13.Well, already, Amy, we are six months into these new inquests and

:03:14. > :03:18.we are a very long way from completing them. The origin`l target

:03:19. > :03:22.was that they were going to be completed by about Christmas or the

:03:23. > :03:25.New Year. Now we are hearing that it could be the middle of next year

:03:26. > :03:29.before all of the evidence, the witnesses and impact statemdnts have

:03:30. > :03:34.been completed and the jury of an asked to return their verdict. And

:03:35. > :03:37.of course, over and beyond that there are two current reports going

:03:38. > :03:41.on into the preparation by South Yorkshire Police or the match that

:03:42. > :03:46.day and how they handled thd aftermath. Now, those are a long way

:03:47. > :03:49.off. So in a sense, the Hillsborough saga, not talking about a m`tter of

:03:50. > :03:53.months before this is all going to come to a complete conclusion, we

:03:54. > :03:57.are talking about a matter of years. It is going to be a long, long time

:03:58. > :04:01.still for the Liverpool famhlies to have to follow the whole story. And

:04:02. > :04:05.I'm sure you will be updated as as that happens. Thank you, John. ``

:04:06. > :04:08.you will be updating us. Construction workers at Ferrybridge

:04:09. > :04:13.power station staged an unofficial strike this morning

:04:14. > :04:15.over the state of the toilets. More than a hundred workers at the

:04:16. > :04:18.West Yorkshire power station walked out, claiming facilities on site

:04:19. > :04:21.were not fit for purpose and were And the protests seem to have paid

:04:22. > :04:29.off, as Kate Bradbrook reports. Breakfast time for construction

:04:30. > :04:35.workers here at Ferrybridge. They should be on site workhng

:04:36. > :04:38.on a brand`new power station. But this morning they withdrew

:04:39. > :04:39.their labour. They were really,

:04:40. > :04:49.really bad yesterday. There was a lot of flooding

:04:50. > :04:52.on the floor and as I say, There was a meeting called

:04:53. > :04:56.and it has led to this situ`tion The construction site itself is just

:04:57. > :05:02.beyond this gate but workers here have been telling

:05:03. > :05:06.me things are now far more serious A few lads have been going home sick

:05:07. > :05:17.with tummy upsets and bugs, Having to take time off

:05:18. > :05:21.and they think it is Workers say the problem is not new

:05:22. > :05:26.but things got particularly bad You know, when you need to go to

:05:27. > :05:31.the toilet, you haven't got time to You know,

:05:32. > :05:36.it is just an impossibility. By the time we'd have balloted

:05:37. > :05:38.members, you can imagine wh`t The contractor, Hitachi Zosdn Inova,

:05:39. > :05:42.told us it was aware of the concerns raised about a block of

:05:43. > :05:45.eight toilets but that 52 in total It said it had already carrhed

:05:46. > :05:54.out extra cleaning and was Shortly afterwards,

:05:55. > :05:57.an agreement was reached between the firm and the unions to open

:05:58. > :06:04.more toilets and improve hygiene. There are procedures that wd use to

:06:05. > :06:09.try and get things resolved but it has not worked and the lads have

:06:10. > :06:13.chosen to come out and take action For these workers it will bd

:06:14. > :06:18.business as usual in the morning and hopefully this time thex won't

:06:19. > :06:32.be caught short. I am glad they got to the bottom of

:06:33. > :06:36.it! Two years ago we met a young man

:06:37. > :06:40.who'd been paralysed after standing Today he's powering ahead

:06:41. > :06:44.in wheelchair racing after being talent`spotted by

:06:45. > :06:49.Tanni Grey`Thompson. Also tonight, it's been revdaled

:06:50. > :06:52.a new specialist college to train the workforce who will build

:06:53. > :06:55.the High Speed 2 Rail Link will be The first students will walk through

:06:56. > :07:02.the doors in September 2017 and the development is estilated to

:07:03. > :07:20.be worth ?30 million to Yes, it is a really big news and we

:07:21. > :07:26.have a great place to celebrate a night because in this very shared is

:07:27. > :07:29.where the Giants of the ste`m age, Mallard and flying Scotsman and

:07:30. > :07:31.thousands of locomotives were built that put Doncaster on the steam age,

:07:32. > :07:33.Mallard and flying Scotsman and thousands of locomotives were built

:07:34. > :07:36.that put Doncaster an international rail map. Nowadays it is hole to a

:07:37. > :07:40.company with 1000 people on site looking after refurbishing the

:07:41. > :07:43.carriages we run up and down the East Coast main line to King's

:07:44. > :07:45.Cross. That number could soon rise into the tens of thousands right

:07:46. > :07:56.away because students are going to come to this town and be tr`ined to

:07:57. > :07:57.be the new orange jacketed... We apologise, we have had some

:07:58. > :08:01.technical difficulties. In other news now, and South

:08:02. > :08:04.Yorkshire Police has been told to make immediate improvements to the

:08:05. > :08:06.way it deals with child protection. A report by Her Majesty's Inspector

:08:07. > :08:09.of Constabulary found significant It criticised the way

:08:10. > :08:11.the force dealt with childrdn in care homes who were at rhsk

:08:12. > :08:14.of sexual exploitation, There were also concerns about slow

:08:15. > :08:25.responses to allegations of abuse. We will be reviewing all those

:08:26. > :08:28.incidents to make sure not only that the victim is supported but that

:08:29. > :08:31.if there are any failings in relation to what we have done,

:08:32. > :08:34.that they are addressed as well Because every single officer

:08:35. > :08:36.in South Yorkshire is absolttely committed to getting this rhght

:08:37. > :08:39.and we need to make sure nothing and It takes incredible courage

:08:40. > :08:43.for a victim to come forward and we need to make sure th`t they

:08:44. > :08:46.have confidence in us. New plans for a one billion pound

:08:47. > :08:49.potash mine in the North York Moors The company behind the mine,

:08:50. > :08:56.Sirius Minerals, claims that The application was delayed

:08:57. > :09:00.by a year to address environmental The national park authority

:09:01. > :09:04.will decide whether to grant At a local level we can boost

:09:05. > :09:11.the economy of North Yorkshhre by about 10% and make

:09:12. > :09:13.a big contribution to the local economy with payments for royalties

:09:14. > :09:16.and rates and taxes as well. It all relies

:09:17. > :09:18.on obviously approval to get done but we feel very confident we will

:09:19. > :09:22.be underway and on our way hnto construction and then heading on

:09:23. > :09:28.our long way to production hn 2 18. Thousands of children

:09:29. > :09:30.across Yorkshire are sufferhng from tooth decay by the time thex're

:09:31. > :09:33.three, according to new figtres They show, on average,

:09:34. > :09:40.one in six three`year`olds hn West Yorkshire has visible tooth

:09:41. > :09:45.decay, with the number as hhgh as one in five in Leeds and

:09:46. > :09:47.Wakefield. Meanwhile, York falls

:09:48. > :09:51.below the national average with just under 7% of three year

:09:52. > :10:01.olds suffering decay. I have two say, Mabel is terrible

:10:02. > :10:08.for brushing her teeth. I hope she behaves herself in future!

:10:09. > :10:10.More than ?200,000 has been raised for a children's

:10:11. > :10:12.hospice after a fundraising appeal by

:10:13. > :10:17.The money will be used to provide respite care to families at

:10:18. > :10:19.The hospice cares for seriously ill children

:10:20. > :10:23.BBC Radio York launched the good night's sleep appe`l

:10:24. > :10:25.a year ago and has now excedded its fundraising target.

:10:26. > :10:28.Looking after a child is such hard work when they

:10:29. > :10:32.It is 24/7 and the reason it is so important is that

:10:33. > :10:35.when families come here, they know that we will take care of

:10:36. > :10:38.So they can sit back, they can relax,

:10:39. > :10:42.they can go and do something else, they can get a good night's sleep.

:10:43. > :10:44.We couldn't do any of that without the support that we

:10:45. > :10:46.have from the communities around the whole of Yorkshire.

:10:47. > :10:50.This money from the Good Night's Sleep appeal will help us to support

:10:51. > :10:53.at least 50 families who nedd a good night's sleep, and we will do that.

:10:54. > :10:56.Fantastic, a huge amount thdy have raised.

:10:57. > :11:00.In the next few weeks we'll find out who's going to be taking ovdr the

:11:01. > :11:03.Not for the first time the trains will

:11:04. > :11:06.be repainted and another colpany will pick up where government owned

:11:07. > :11:10.In Harrogate they see the change as an opportunity to get regular

:11:11. > :11:13.Businesses have met the thrde private bidders and there's growing

:11:14. > :11:16.confidence Harrogate will gdt a frequent service to the c`pital.

:11:17. > :11:26.The Harrogate Bridal Show is one of the wedding industry's bhggest

:11:27. > :11:30.Manufacturers display their latest designs at the

:11:31. > :11:34.Visitor numbers are good but there is a feeling they could be dven

:11:35. > :11:36.better if there were regular, direct trains to Harrogate from London

:11:37. > :11:39.It is about getting people tp here really early in the morning

:11:40. > :11:42.so that they are ready to w`lk round these exhibitions at 8:30,

:11:43. > :11:47.And then of course, to get them back later in the evening.

:11:48. > :11:51.It is all about day visitors, really, from the south.

:11:52. > :11:54.As it stands there is just one train to Harrogate from London.

:11:55. > :11:57.It arrives in the town at nhne o'clock at night and then ldaves

:11:58. > :12:01.Businesses are hoping they can persuade whoever wins the E`st Coast

:12:02. > :12:06.franchise to provide seven or eight London trains every day.

:12:07. > :12:09.The East Coast Mainline is currently run by the government, using the

:12:10. > :12:15.name East Coast, after the previous private operators both faildd.

:12:16. > :12:19.They were GNER and then National Express.

:12:20. > :12:22.The route is in the process of being sold off once again and thrde firms

:12:23. > :12:26.They are First Group, who already run Trans Pennine

:12:27. > :12:31.A bid from Virgin, who run the West Coast Mainline and also

:12:32. > :12:36.Eurostar, which operates thd London to Paris Channel Tunnel service

:12:37. > :12:40.So, what is the chance of H`rrogate getting more London trains?

:12:41. > :12:43.The government is encouraging bidders to serve a wider variety

:12:44. > :12:48.Huddersfield and Scarborough have also been suggested.

:12:49. > :12:53.But it is Harrogate that has mounted the most vocal camp`ign

:12:54. > :12:54.There is a serious bidding process going on.

:12:55. > :12:57.These are very clear guidelhnes as to what this service should provide.

:12:58. > :13:00.And I am pretty optimistic and hopeful that with that strict

:13:01. > :13:02.guidance coming from the government, that the government will factor

:13:03. > :13:13.After the high`profile failtre of National Express and GNER,

:13:14. > :13:15.all those involved are despdrate to avoid the embarrassment

:13:16. > :13:20.of another private train colpany quitting the franchise.

:13:21. > :13:22.And whoever wins, landlocked Harrogate, 70 miles

:13:23. > :13:29.from the sea, is hoping it can be wedded to the East Coast Mahnline.

:13:30. > :13:39.Spencer Stokes, BBC Look North, Harrogate.

:13:40. > :13:48.Let's go back to the story that a college to train the work f`st to

:13:49. > :13:57.build a high`speed rail link will be based in Yorkshire. Hopefully we can

:13:58. > :14:01.go back to Tom Hughes. We are going to blame leaves on the line, fingers

:14:02. > :14:05.crossed that time around. I got as far as introducing the mayoral

:14:06. > :14:08.Doncaster. We have been talking about Israel College for a while,

:14:09. > :14:16.what is it going to be? `` `bout this rail college. It is brhlliant

:14:17. > :14:20.for Doncaster, the region and wider afield. We have seen some artists

:14:21. > :14:23.impressions, a lot of money being spent on a grand building, but you

:14:24. > :14:26.have not got it quite all your own way because you wanted the whole

:14:27. > :14:30.thing here but the government says it will be split between Birmingham

:14:31. > :14:35.and Doncaster. One college, to sites, great for Britain, great for

:14:36. > :14:40.Doncaster and for the wider region. It is about inspiring young people,

:14:41. > :14:43.getting the engineers we nedd. We need 18,000 engineers in five`year

:14:44. > :14:50.is, a triptych amount of nulber and we are here to do that. `` ` huge

:14:51. > :14:54.number. How much money are we talking to build this and where is

:14:55. > :14:58.the money coming from? We are looking to put up to a third from

:14:59. > :15:01.different areas, Sheffield city region very much part of it but also

:15:02. > :15:08.it will be coming from the government. We are ready to go.

:15:09. > :15:13.Where is it going to be? Not here? On Lakeside, right next to the East

:15:14. > :15:18.Coast mainline. And when will we start to see it being built? Like

:15:19. > :15:22.the Phoenix out of the ashes, we will see it starting very soon and

:15:23. > :15:27.we are going for completion in 2017, delivering on time and within

:15:28. > :15:30.budget. A lot of students going through there, do you know what sort

:15:31. > :15:35.of things they will be taught and why is very need for those students?

:15:36. > :15:38.There is a massive growth in manufacturing and engineering.

:15:39. > :15:42.High`speed two will bring a lot of jobs and is about actually helping

:15:43. > :15:47.to reinvigorate the North as well. That is why Doncaster is kex to

:15:48. > :15:51.this. We have delivered high speed before, with Allard and the flying

:15:52. > :15:55.Scotsman and we are going to deliver it again. `` Mallard. We have

:15:56. > :16:02.finally completed the journdy after a few delays. HS2 is not expected to

:16:03. > :16:05.open until 2033, still some time to book your ticket.

:16:06. > :16:08.do you know a volunteer who makes a difference to

:16:09. > :16:12.It could be time for that pdrson to get the recognition they deserve

:16:13. > :16:16.at this year's Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

:16:17. > :16:21.And revealed, the artwork of a Yorkshire miner finallx sees

:16:22. > :16:31.Yorkshire's opening pair of Adam Lyth and

:16:32. > :16:34.Alex Lees have scooped this year's two main Cricket Writers aw`rds

:16:35. > :16:36.Lyth was named the County Championship player of the

:16:37. > :16:40.He scored nearly 1,500 runs, which included six centuries.

:16:41. > :16:46.21`year`old Lees was named young player of the year.

:16:47. > :16:53.Callum Hall was left paralysed after he stood on a sea urchin

:16:54. > :16:59.The chances of this happening was put at one in 500,000.

:17:00. > :17:01.And his life was looking really bleak.

:17:02. > :17:04.But nearly two years later and Callum has been talent spotted

:17:05. > :17:06.by one of the most famous Paralympians of all

:17:07. > :17:11.He only took up the sport of wheelchair racing

:17:12. > :17:15.a few months ago but is hophng to compete in Rio in 2016.

:17:16. > :17:22.Charlotte Leeming has been to see him in training.

:17:23. > :17:29.Pushing on the road, lifting weights in the gym.

:17:30. > :17:34.Callum Hall is working towards his goal.

:17:35. > :17:36.My dream would be winning a Paralympic gold medal,

:17:37. > :17:42.If you are going to do it, it properly.

:17:43. > :17:48.He had just got out of hosphtal following a life`saving operation.

:17:49. > :17:51.He was paralysed from the chest down after treading

:17:52. > :17:56.A barb was embedded in his toe, it caused an abscess to grow

:17:57. > :18:01.Doctors had never seen anything like it.

:18:02. > :18:04.As soon as you get out of hospital and you realise that everything is

:18:05. > :18:07.kind of accessible, yeah, there are places you can't get to but you have

:18:08. > :18:11.got mates who can carry you up the stairs or you can bum shuffle.

:18:12. > :18:16.You just kind of realise th`t you're not seen as a wheelchair, you are

:18:17. > :18:20.a person and you just need to get out there and get on with it.

:18:21. > :18:22.Callum only started wheelch`ir racing this summer but was spotted

:18:23. > :18:28.by Tanni Grey`Thompson's husband and former coach Ian at an dvent.

:18:29. > :18:30.During her career, Tanni won 16 Paralympic med`ls

:18:31. > :18:34.She is now supporting Callul to pursue his dream.

:18:35. > :18:38.She is just happy to help and you need to listen when you are

:18:39. > :18:40.getting advice from someone like that, from Ian and Tanni, bdcause

:18:41. > :18:44.they have been there from the start of Paralympic sport, really.

:18:45. > :18:48.They know the ins and outs `nd when they tell you to do solething,

:18:49. > :18:51.you do it, because it leads to success 99.9% of the time.

:18:52. > :18:55.Callum wants a medal at Rio and to make his family proud.

:18:56. > :18:59.He says life may not have gone to plan but he now has a new plan and

:19:00. > :19:14.We will certainly be followhng him. He has got some big biceps, almost

:19:15. > :19:18.as big as mine. You wish! BBC Yorkshire's search for `n

:19:19. > :19:21.unsung sporting hero starts today. We want you to tell us

:19:22. > :19:24.about a volunteer who makes sport Our winner will then get national

:19:25. > :19:28.recognition at the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the

:19:29. > :19:30.Year Awards, Is there someone

:19:31. > :19:40.in your community who goes `bove and beyond the call of duty to get

:19:41. > :19:46.people involved in sport? It could be a coach, kit person

:19:47. > :19:48.groundsman, fundraiser. It just needs to be someone who you

:19:49. > :19:51.think deserves praise for the part Previous winners include Arthur

:19:52. > :19:57.Peel, who coached football hn David Woodward was recognisdd

:19:58. > :20:05.for keeping hockey alive in And Rocky Whitehead got the little

:20:06. > :20:09.'uns involved in rugby leagte. Last year's winner, Ian Watson,

:20:10. > :20:11.has volunteered almost 30 ydars I'm not out to produce a ch`mpion,

:20:12. > :20:16.I just want to produce Irrespective of whether it hs

:20:17. > :20:22.somebody who doesn't get anxwhere but enjoys it, or whether they get

:20:23. > :20:25.an Olympic gold medal, If you know someone like Ian,

:20:26. > :20:45.get in touch. We look forward to hearing `ll of

:20:46. > :20:49.those stories. South Yorkshire's industrial

:20:50. > :20:51.heritage has always been well documented and today marks 20

:20:52. > :20:53.years since the last lump of coal was mined at Kiveton Park

:20:54. > :20:56.Colliery near Rotherham. Less known, though,

:20:57. > :20:58.is the fact that one of its former employees was a talented pahnter

:20:59. > :21:03.and pioneering photographer. Joe Bass was such a good artist

:21:04. > :21:06.he was given the chance to study But fate got in the way

:21:07. > :21:11.and he ended up making a living with Now for the first time his story

:21:12. > :21:17.can be told, as Phil reports. images on film back in 1914 is even

:21:18. > :22:57.more remarkable when you consider that in those days, photogr`phy was
