:00:00. > :00:22.some of the policemen told the ambulance to get down as quickly as

:00:23. > :00:23.possible to the incident took place. It looked like somebody needed

:00:24. > :00:24.urgent help. He's been named as 27-year-old

:00:25. > :00:26.Yasser Yaqub, who came from the Crossland Moor

:00:27. > :00:29.area of Huddersfield. Police say the incident was linked

:00:30. > :00:32.to possession of an illegal firearm. We look at the gun crime figures

:00:33. > :00:38.and ask, how dangerous is Yorkshire? And in other news: The Government

:00:39. > :00:44.says South Yorkshire's delayed tram train project is taking too long

:00:45. > :00:47.to deliver - it won't be And all the sports news

:00:48. > :00:53.on the day the Bradford Bulls Plus we'll hear from the man who

:00:54. > :00:59.guided the Leeds Diving Olympians to victory as he heads off

:01:00. > :01:10.to a new challenge down under. After an overcast day, hopefully

:01:11. > :01:11.some sunshine on offer tomorrow and Thursday. I'll be back with the

:01:12. > :01:21.weather forecast. Tonight, we're live

:01:22. > :01:26.from Huddersfield where a man has been shot dead by police

:01:27. > :01:28.in what they called It was just behind me

:01:29. > :01:50.here on the M62. Both sides of the roads have

:01:51. > :01:52.j been closed all day The shooting happened yesterday

:01:53. > :02:02.evening when police stopped a car Around the same time,

:02:03. > :02:09.two further arrests were made when a vehicle was stopped

:02:10. > :02:13.in the Chain Bar area near Bradford, Police say the operations followed

:02:14. > :02:16.information relating to criminal Witnesses described the sight

:02:17. > :02:20.of officers "swarming" around a group of vehicles,

:02:21. > :02:31.as Phil Bodmer reports. The slip road weary weight Audi was

:02:32. > :02:39.forced to stop by police last night -- were a white Audi. You can see

:02:40. > :02:46.bullet holes on the windscreen. Today, forensics teams and

:02:47. > :02:53.investigators were working behind screens on the carriageway which was

:02:54. > :02:58.shut for 24 hours. When I looked over, everything had stood still, it

:02:59. > :03:03.was like surreal. I didn't hear the shooting and didn't see the

:03:04. > :03:10.shooting, but I did the car boxed in and then I saw some big policemen

:03:11. > :03:17.and some police with black outfits. The man who died is 28-year-old

:03:18. > :03:20.Yassar Yaqub, a father of two from Huddersfield. This afternoon,

:03:21. > :03:24.flowers were taken to the family home by relatives and friends who

:03:25. > :03:28.asked for their privacy to be respected. One witness caught up in

:03:29. > :03:35.the drama last night described what he saw. There were rapid response

:03:36. > :03:37.vehicles pulling up then a couple of ambulances. As soon as the

:03:38. > :03:42.ambulances turned up, some of the policemen told them to get down as

:03:43. > :03:46.quickly to the incident had taken place. It looked like somebody

:03:47. > :03:51.needed urgent medical help. Three people were arrested at the scene of

:03:52. > :03:55.the incident. Two more were detained at chain bar near Bradford.

:03:56. > :04:01.Information received about a criminal possession of a firearm has

:04:02. > :04:09.been updated to the Chief Constable. Well fatal shootings are rear, there

:04:10. > :04:13.have been 22 in England and Wales over the last decade and this is the

:04:14. > :04:20.first involving West Yorkshire Police since 2010. With the

:04:21. > :04:21.investigation in the hands of the Independent Police Complaints

:04:22. > :04:23.Commission, West Yorkshire Police say it would be inappropriate to

:04:24. > :04:25.make any further comment at this time.

:04:26. > :04:44.Yassar Yaqub is a 28-day-old father from Huddersfield. Friends have been

:04:45. > :04:49.paying tribute on social media, describing him as a diamond, the

:04:50. > :04:52.life and soul of the party. One people wrote comedy were no angel,

:04:53. > :04:58.but you still of the good guys. But we also know that yesterday Yassar

:04:59. > :05:06.Yaqub appeared in court in 2010 on two charges of attempted murder and

:05:07. > :05:10.one of possessing a fireman -- firearm with intent to endanger

:05:11. > :05:21.life. He was found not guilty on all counts. A statement through the

:05:22. > :05:24.family lawyer, they say they are in shock and ask the media to respect

:05:25. > :05:31.their privacy at what they describe as the very difficult time. Whenever

:05:32. > :05:34.a firearm is discharged by the police, there is an automatic

:05:35. > :05:39.investigation but there has been one important development this

:05:40. > :05:48.afternoon. In the last hour, the Independent police completes

:05:49. > :05:51.commission have said, a nonpolice issue firearm was discovered in a

:05:52. > :05:57.vehicle in which Yassar Yaqub was travelling and that is now being

:05:58. > :06:00.examined, subject to further investigation, and we know that a

:06:01. > :06:03.postmortem is due to take place tomorrow. you mentioned in your

:06:04. > :06:05.report the use of firearms by police.

:06:06. > :06:07.Well, in the last eight years there have been 40 incidents

:06:08. > :06:11.where police have fired weapons at people.

:06:12. > :06:14.The police maintain it's always a last resort and they only shoot

:06:15. > :06:16.when they believe they or other members of the public

:06:17. > :06:20.Our reporter Spencer Stokes has been speaking to a former firearms

:06:21. > :06:26.Police firing at and killing members of the public is something that

:06:27. > :06:37.The armed officers involved in last night's events will have attended

:06:38. > :06:39.many such incidents that have ended peacefully.

:06:40. > :06:42.Their job is to protect the detectives and the general public.

:06:43. > :06:44.The decision to fire last night would have been made

:06:45. > :06:54.Nick Rothwell is a former firearms commander with West Yorkshire Police

:06:55. > :06:59.and knows the pressures the highly trained officers are under.

:07:00. > :07:02.How quickly do decisions have to be made?

:07:03. > :07:08.A set of circumstances will present themselves,

:07:09. > :07:15.where and when to stop a vehicle, and something will then can

:07:16. > :07:19.-- occur and the officers probably have about half a second to make

:07:20. > :07:25.a decision as to whether to fire a weapon or not.

:07:26. > :07:28.It's the first time since 2010 that West Yorkshire Police have shot

:07:29. > :07:36.Come to the door and speak to the officers,

:07:37. > :07:40.Alistair Bell was fatally injured after he fired at police

:07:41. > :07:44.from his home in Kirkheaton in December 2010, and in 2009,

:07:45. > :07:49.Bartholomew Buckley was shot by the force in Brickhouse.

:07:50. > :07:53.Across England and Wales in the last eight years,

:07:54. > :07:56.police forces have used firearms on 40 separate occasions,

:07:57. > :08:01.that's five shootings every year on average.

:08:02. > :08:04.At its most extreme, it is possibly who pulls the trigger

:08:05. > :08:17.Quick decisions have to be made and these are reflected over a long

:08:18. > :08:21.period of time but the officers have probably less than a second to make

:08:22. > :08:25.to make these life-changing and perhaps career-changing decisions.

:08:26. > :08:29.Last night's incident was related to desertion of a firearm and gun

:08:30. > :08:31.crime across West Yorkshire is the fourth highest

:08:32. > :08:40.In 2014 and 15, there were 221 gun related offences.

:08:41. > :08:46.That's a 12% fall over the previous five years.

:08:47. > :08:49.Yasser Yaqoub now joins a list of 22 other fatal police shooting is over

:08:50. > :08:53.the last decade in England and Wales, a shooting that

:08:54. > :09:04.for the officers involved is always a last resort.

:09:05. > :09:12.More information will be revealed over the next few hours. Behind me,

:09:13. > :09:20.feel -- vehicle recovery vehicles have arrived. There is speculation

:09:21. > :09:23.as to when this junction will open by the investigation will continue

:09:24. > :09:25.and we will let you know that as soon as we possibly can. For the

:09:26. > :09:29.moment, back to the studio. Well, in other news,

:09:30. > :09:36.the pioneering Tram Train project in South Yorkshire won't be up

:09:37. > :09:39.and running until the summer of 2018 They say they're having to create

:09:40. > :09:44.new ways of powering the vehicles. Last year we revealed how

:09:45. > :09:47.a series of hold-ups meant the service wouldn't begin this

:09:48. > :09:48.month as planned. And now the transport minister

:09:49. > :09:52.Andrew Jones says the pilot has Tom Ingall has this

:09:53. > :10:00.exclusive report. By the light of the winter sun,

:10:01. > :10:03.a transport revolution is taking shape, albeit much

:10:04. > :10:08.slower than expected. At the terminus, just like elsewhere

:10:09. > :10:11.along this new line, The platform is half-built,

:10:12. > :10:21.the rails have been laid but by now I should be able to step off a tram

:10:22. > :10:25.train and head to the shopping centre over there but I can't

:10:26. > :10:27.because there have been delays. They've been caused by problems

:10:28. > :10:30.with how to build the overhead line These masts will carry

:10:31. > :10:33.the power lines. The trams work at one voltage

:10:34. > :10:36.but if one day mainline electric trains need to run here,

:10:37. > :10:38.their power requirements To avoid spending money on something

:10:39. > :10:43.that could become redundant, new ideas are being tried out

:10:44. > :10:50.and that's what's taking time. There's a pilot and solutions that

:10:51. > :10:54.are needed for this project. That's why we've got a view to come

:10:55. > :10:57.up with new solutions and we have a plan to implement it

:10:58. > :11:01.over the next few months and years. The new vehicles for the project

:11:02. > :11:04.were built in Spain and have now There are seven in total

:11:05. > :11:11.and they will supplement the existing tram fleet but the tram

:11:12. > :11:15.trains will mean, for the many first time, this service can

:11:16. > :11:17.break out of Sheffield. They will run on conventional tram

:11:18. > :11:23.tracks and switch to train mode It promises what is called

:11:24. > :11:28.the seamless commute with other It has taken far too long to deliver

:11:29. > :11:35.and I'm extremely frustrated by it. We have seen a lot of new vehicles

:11:36. > :11:41.arrive and are being tested now and Network Rail are busy building

:11:42. > :11:44.the infrastructure but we have been talking about this project

:11:45. > :11:47.in Yorkshire for a long time and I'm looking forward for when it finally

:11:48. > :11:50.opens and we get people Proving the concept of trams

:11:51. > :11:53.and trains sharing tracks It will only be a short extension

:11:54. > :12:00.but the possibilities are clear - first, though, Network Rail need

:12:01. > :12:25.to overcome repeated The good Samaritan who abandoned his

:12:26. > :12:31.Everest attempt to save another climber's life gets another go.

:12:32. > :12:34.Police have named the man whose body was found in the River Ouse

:12:35. > :12:39.He's been identified as 42-year-old Craig Batters, who was from York.

:12:40. > :12:43.Detectives are now trying to piece together his last movements before

:12:44. > :12:46.he was found by a member of the public in the river

:12:47. > :12:54.A help line for people affected by domestic abuse in South Yorkshire

:12:55. > :13:01.More than 2,000 people called Sheffield Domestic Abuse last year.

:13:02. > :13:03.It's funded by Sheffield City Council.

:13:04. > :13:05.It'll now be open from eight in the morning until eight

:13:06. > :13:10.We don't know yet whether or not we need to go to 24 hours,

:13:11. > :13:13.that's why we're doing it a bit at a time, so hopefully

:13:14. > :13:14.by making the service, extending the hours,

:13:15. > :13:21.it will mean that more people feel able to contact us.

:13:22. > :13:24.An aristocrat has denied dangerous driving following a crash at a busy

:13:25. > :13:33.76-year-old Lady Susan Zetland, of Aske Hall near Richmond,

:13:34. > :13:35.appeared at Teesside Crown Court for a brief hearing.

:13:36. > :13:38.She was charged after her 4x4 was involved in a collision

:13:39. > :13:40.on the A66 at the Melsonby crossroads in July.

:13:41. > :13:48.Well, onto sport, and the Bradford Bulls have been put into liquidation

:13:49. > :13:51.after administrators failed to find a new buyer.

:13:52. > :13:53.All the staff and players have been made redundant.

:13:54. > :13:56.However, the four-time Super League champions can still compete

:13:57. > :13:58.in the championship if a new owner can be found.

:13:59. > :14:12.The club has been an administration for 50 days and there have been a

:14:13. > :14:15.number of interested parties and a couple of deals that we thought

:14:16. > :14:20.could get over the line. A real shock shock to everybody involved

:14:21. > :14:23.that the deal didn't go through and players were called in and told that

:14:24. > :14:28.the club was folding and ceased to exist. One of the problem is not

:14:29. > :14:33.just the debts but the debts they think will be coming. It is a huge

:14:34. > :14:37.shortfall in the projected profits in terms of spending too much money

:14:38. > :14:42.already saw one of the things they can do is cut back on staff but also

:14:43. > :14:50.trimmed the playing squad. In a lot of players have already joined new

:14:51. > :14:51.clubs. The general manager says they haven't been living within their

:14:52. > :14:59.means. It's very disappointing. We thought

:15:00. > :15:03.after last time it was going to take the club forward and we could choose

:15:04. > :15:12.the deemed to promotion. Another previous owner didn't invest enough

:15:13. > :15:15.and the club has suffered and not winning the million pound game a

:15:16. > :15:26.couple of years ago was probably the last nail in the coffin.

:15:27. > :15:32.That is very little money coming in to funds but most people in rugby

:15:33. > :15:36.league want to see funding coming in.

:15:37. > :15:39.Better news for Yorkshire's football clubs, though -

:15:40. > :15:41.could 2017 be a very big year for them?

:15:42. > :15:43.After yesterday's games, both Sheffield United

:15:44. > :15:45.and Doncaster Rovers are top of their respective divisions,

:15:46. > :15:47.while four of our other teams are in the playoff places.

:15:48. > :15:51.We haven't had a Premier League side in the region for ten years now,

:15:52. > :15:54.but fans are daring to dream that might be about to change.

:15:55. > :15:57.The gloom of going down - this was Sheffield United's

:15:58. > :15:59.delegation from the Premier League in 2007.

:16:00. > :16:03.Now though, almost all of Yorkshire's football clubs find

:16:04. > :16:09.themselves at the right end of the table.

:16:10. > :16:12.Huddersfield are the highest, fourth in the championship

:16:13. > :16:15.after Nakhi Wells scored the only goal of the game at Wigan yesterday.

:16:16. > :16:17.In sixth, Sheffield Wednesday who escaped Wolves'

:16:18. > :16:26.Mounting an unlikely play-off challenge for Barnsley,

:16:27. > :16:34.In the Yorkshire derby, Leeds had a 3-0 win over Rotherham.

:16:35. > :16:41.One coach in bullish mood about the transfer window,

:16:42. > :16:45.the other still watching the car park.

:16:46. > :16:48.We're here to keep all our players and to build something,

:16:49. > :16:54.It will only be incoming as no one will be leaving in this window.

:16:55. > :16:57.The chairman has asked me to keep going, and that could be ten

:16:58. > :17:00.years or ten minutes, but there's no exciting news that

:17:01. > :17:02.Ron Atkinson is pulling into the car park or anything.

:17:03. > :17:05.I always check for cars on my way to work every day.

:17:06. > :17:13.That leaves Leeds fifth, in the middle of a Yorkshire

:17:14. > :17:16.Wembley looks a good place to be in May.

:17:17. > :17:18.Hoping to avoid the play-offs is Sheffield United,

:17:19. > :17:22.top of league one after a 3-1 win at Bury.

:17:23. > :17:28.There was an own goal and a late tap in.

:17:29. > :17:30.Bradford grabbed a first win in five.

:17:31. > :17:38.His cross was finished off as the Bantams beat

:17:39. > :17:50.It's looking good at the top, the Blades now ten to one to go up,

:17:51. > :17:51.less so at the bottom after Chesterfield's

:17:52. > :17:56.And Doncaster dominated against Stevenage and a late

:17:57. > :17:58.own goal was enough for the three points.

:17:59. > :18:05.It could well be a very happy New Year.

:18:06. > :18:08.Adrian Hinchliffe is the coach who guided Jack Laugher

:18:09. > :18:10.and Chris Mears to win Great Britain's first

:18:11. > :18:16.Working for the council, he's been key to making

:18:17. > :18:20.performance centre in the country, but after 24 years he's leaving.

:18:21. > :18:23.Despite what he's achieved he's only been employed

:18:24. > :18:26.as a consultant by British Diving, so he's heading to Australia's

:18:27. > :18:30.We'll hear from him shortly, but first here's some of those

:18:31. > :18:48.He has taken me from a boy with a lot of teams to a man able to

:18:49. > :18:51.achieve his dreams with his dedication, his organisation and

:18:52. > :19:02.professionalism. Easy Macbeth" and a great person to have in my career.

:19:03. > :19:13.We've got the Olympic medallists in Great Britain, Junior champions,

:19:14. > :19:19.World Cup champions, the success is just unbelievable and that all

:19:20. > :19:22.started from his vision. It is a massive shame from the bottom of my

:19:23. > :19:33.heart to say he is leaving us. He has his reasons and to be honest,

:19:34. > :19:37.he's been forced to leave. The hard work he's put in and what he has

:19:38. > :19:39.sacrificed to create a brilliant training environment with amazing

:19:40. > :19:50.divers who have achieved more than anyone has ever achieved in

:19:51. > :20:00.Britain, it feels like an insult to his legacy. I think the performance

:20:01. > :20:08.director have overlooked how much of a key role he plays. I wish his

:20:09. > :20:12.family the best but it's just a fact that he's going... I can't get used

:20:13. > :20:21.to it. What's it like listening to that?

:20:22. > :20:25.That's pretty heartbreaking. That's the side of it that has made the

:20:26. > :20:31.decision very difficult for me. I've made some great friends in those

:20:32. > :20:36.athletes and coaches and it's hard to look at. It has been quite

:20:37. > :20:42.sudden. It has taken new 24 years to get there and they talk about your

:20:43. > :20:47.legacy. We're working very hard at the moment behind the scenes to make

:20:48. > :20:58.sure that divers like Jack and those guys use our training, Tucker. It's

:20:59. > :21:05.important to me. -- those guys are looked after. there were strong

:21:06. > :21:08.words from them about why you're leaving, that he had been forced

:21:09. > :21:13.out. It's not necessarily what you want to do. I don't think anyone

:21:14. > :21:19.wants to leave anything that they do, especially something I've been

:21:20. > :21:22.so proud of. I loved -- I've loved being heard in Leeds. I came to

:21:23. > :21:29.university here years ago and it's always been good to me -- here in

:21:30. > :21:36.Leeds. There are personalities in the division at the moment that

:21:37. > :21:40.didn't match and a very passing -- I'm very passionate about my sport

:21:41. > :21:43.and I want to go to the next place. I've got a family and looking after

:21:44. > :21:52.them is very important so it's been a big decision but isn't -- there is

:21:53. > :22:07.another opportunity on the table and I have to take it. British diving

:22:08. > :22:14.and giving you -- they are begging you to stay. It is something I have

:22:15. > :22:19.always been passionate about. I'm a little confused but I'm not one of

:22:20. > :22:26.those people that is going to hang on. People make decisions and they

:22:27. > :22:32.have to make those decisions and that is why they are paid. I would

:22:33. > :22:37.love to stay here but unfortunately this time it's not going to happen.

:22:38. > :22:45.We're going to miss you! Well done for everything.

:22:46. > :22:47.A former soldier from Rotherham who abandoned climbing to the very

:22:48. > :22:50.top of Everest to help save the life of a stranger says he's

:22:51. > :22:58.Leslie Binns was only 500 metres from the summit

:22:59. > :23:00.when he helped Sunita Hazra, an Indian woman who'd

:23:01. > :23:04.Now Leslie says he plans to return to Nepal in April

:23:05. > :23:21.He said he wouldn't attempted again but 42-year-old Leslie is preparing

:23:22. > :23:27.to climb Everest for a second time. He had to abandon the challenge last
