:00:00. > :00:00.Good evening, you're watching Monday's Look North.

:00:07. > :00:08.On the programme tonight - breaking news...

:00:09. > :00:11.The body of a teenage girl is found on a path near Rotherham -

:00:12. > :00:13.police believe her death is suspicious.

:00:14. > :00:16.Operations cancelled and long waiting times -

:00:17. > :00:17.now claims Yorkshire's hospitals are so overcrowded

:00:18. > :00:25.United in grief - hundreds join Katie Rough's family in York

:00:26. > :00:29.to mark what would've been her eighth birthday.

:00:30. > :00:35.And does body image put people off exercise?

:00:36. > :00:39.We'll meet the woman speaking out after being mocked at her local gym.

:00:40. > :00:48.Blue skies like leaves in Kettlewell over the weekend are certainly a

:00:49. > :00:56.distant memory. A lot of clout and gloom. Join me for that week ahead

:00:57. > :01:00.forecast. -- a lot of cloud. Good evening, and we start tonight

:01:01. > :01:03.with some breaking news. Police are investigating

:01:04. > :01:05.after the death of a teenage Police say they are treating

:01:06. > :01:08.the death as suspicious because of the nature

:01:09. > :01:10.of the injuries on her body. The girl's body was

:01:11. > :01:12.discovered by members of the public on a pathway off

:01:13. > :01:15.Lordens Hill in the Dinnington area at just before 11

:01:16. > :01:20.o'clock this morning. Police are deploying extra patrols

:01:21. > :01:23.in the area to reassure the public. The police say that

:01:24. > :01:25.the investigation Tom Ingall joins us live

:01:26. > :01:38.now from the scene. Good evening. This is the alleyway

:01:39. > :01:42.just as Lordens Hill, quite a busy thoroughfare, over there there is a

:01:43. > :01:47.supermarket, lots of cars coming and going and lots of police activity.

:01:48. > :01:53.Further down the Alloway there is a lot of lights and a white forensic

:01:54. > :01:58.tent. -- down the alleyway. A lot of work going on. I have just come from

:01:59. > :02:00.the police briefing in Sheffield where we asked the leading detective

:02:01. > :02:04.for some more details. There was a report of a missing

:02:05. > :02:08.episode but only 20 minutes prior to the finding of the body, so, yes,

:02:09. > :02:11.somebody had been reported missing but we have not been able

:02:12. > :02:14.to formally identify the body and therefore I can't give any details

:02:15. > :02:17.as to who the person is at this stage, and obviously we implore

:02:18. > :02:20.and urge anybody who knows anything about this event and anybody who saw

:02:21. > :02:23.any suspicious behaviour in the area to please come forward

:02:24. > :02:25.and report it to the police, quoting incident 256

:02:26. > :02:35.of the 16th of January. Tom, police are keen to reassure the

:02:36. > :02:40.public tonight? That's right. As you said, there

:02:41. > :02:45.will be extra police patrols in the area but they also clearly want

:02:46. > :02:48.information. This is the early stages of the investigation, no

:02:49. > :02:54.confirmation of the identity of the girl has been released yet but there

:02:55. > :02:58.are conflicting reports of her age, she maybe 15 or 16. As I arrived

:02:59. > :03:03.this evening some young girls came to try to lay flowers. Other people

:03:04. > :03:09.have been driving in the car saying they think they know the person who

:03:10. > :03:12.has unfortunately died, so news is circulating around Dinnington, which

:03:13. > :03:20.is not the largest village after all. 20 more details to come and we

:03:21. > :03:25.will pass them on as they are given to us by South Yorkshire Police. --

:03:26. > :03:27.plenty more details. Next tonight, there are fears that

:03:28. > :03:29.high bed-occupancy rates at hospitals across Yorkshire

:03:30. > :03:31.could be putting Latest figures from NHS England show

:03:32. > :03:34.that some trusts have been operating at near full

:03:35. > :03:37.capacity, which has led to many Our health correspondent,

:03:38. > :03:40.Jamie Coulson, reports. Anna is deaf, registered blind

:03:41. > :03:43.and struggles with her mobility. The 41-year-old was born with a rare

:03:44. > :03:46.genetic disorder which means benign Six weeks ago she was due

:03:47. > :03:50.to have a long-awaited operation at Leeds General Infirmary

:03:51. > :03:54.on her lower lip to help with her eating and speech

:03:55. > :03:57.but it was cancelled on the day due While Anna's operation

:03:58. > :04:16.is important to her, she admits it's not life and death

:04:17. > :04:21.and, while frustrating, cancelling non-urgent operations

:04:22. > :04:23.is one of the ways hospitals can The trust has apologised but says

:04:24. > :04:27.like elsewhere in the NHS they are dealing with unprecedented

:04:28. > :04:32.levels of demand. Hospitals try not to have bed

:04:33. > :04:37.occupancy rates above 85%, otherwise research suggests

:04:38. > :04:39.they can have frequent bed shortages, occasional bed

:04:40. > :04:41.crises and an increase During the first week

:04:42. > :04:48.of January hospital trusts in Yorkshire have an annual bed

:04:49. > :04:53.occupancy rate of more than 94%. At the Teaching Hospital

:04:54. > :04:58.in Leeds it was over 97%. In Sheffield it was more

:04:59. > :05:01.than 96% and in York We already know that there

:05:02. > :05:10.is a huge shortage of many We know that there is around 26,000

:05:11. > :05:17.vacancies for nurses throughout the UK, therefore we are absolutely

:05:18. > :05:20.clear that safe patient care cannot be delivered with those kind

:05:21. > :05:22.of occupancy levels. Many hospitals say an influx

:05:23. > :05:24.of frail elderly patients, combined with problems discharging

:05:25. > :05:29.those who are medically fit to leave, is behind the bed

:05:30. > :05:31.shortages and in turn Hospitals say bed shortages mean

:05:32. > :05:48.they have to prioritise those patients whose needs

:05:49. > :05:51.are most urgent. But that means those like Anna

:05:52. > :06:07.must continue to wait. In a statement, NHS England have

:06:08. > :06:16.told us it is not uncommon for there to be pressures at this time of year

:06:17. > :06:18.but it is highly unlikely that bed occupancy levels would remain at

:06:19. > :06:20.those levels along. Well, joining us now is Mark Dayan

:06:21. > :06:35.from the health think-tank Is there a crisis in the NHS in

:06:36. > :06:40.Yorkshire at the moment? Whether or not you call it a crisis it is true

:06:41. > :06:45.that the NHS is having its usual winter pressures last extra

:06:46. > :06:50.intensity building up over the last few years. Looking back at NHS

:06:51. > :06:56.England's statistics, getting on for a third of the trusts in England are

:06:57. > :07:07.saying that the pressures are impacting on patient flow. Bed

:07:08. > :07:10.occupancy levels are very high and the performance statistics are not

:07:11. > :07:15.looking good. Yet this has been a fairly mild winter so far. Heaven

:07:16. > :07:20.knows what the situation would have been with a heavy one. These things

:07:21. > :07:26.are affected by different variables, norovirus and blue have been

:07:27. > :07:37.relatively high this year but nowhere near the all-time highs. --

:07:38. > :07:41.and blue. -- and influenza. We have an ageing and growing population

:07:42. > :07:45.meaning that each winter the several years more and more patients are

:07:46. > :07:53.coming through the door. We heard from Anna, a vulnerable

:07:54. > :07:59.lady, her operation has been cancelled. At what point do the NHS

:08:00. > :08:03.say, we have to shelve an operation because we can't cope? That would

:08:04. > :08:08.usually reflect a serious bed shortage. Nobody would want to make

:08:09. > :08:11.that decision but winters do see an increase in cancelled operations.

:08:12. > :08:16.That is often because the bed for the patient to recover in might be

:08:17. > :08:22.needed for emergency patients coming into A Is this just about finding

:08:23. > :08:30.a reshuffling things in social care as well? -- funding. It is all of

:08:31. > :08:36.those things, increasing funding, having enough doctors and keys

:08:37. > :08:42.specialities, having the funding so that people who leave hospital --

:08:43. > :08:47.who need to leave hospital can do so and also we need better community

:08:48. > :08:57.services to keep people out of hospital. It is a knotty problem but

:08:58. > :08:59.much can be traced back to the NHS having relatively low funding by

:09:00. > :09:04.European standards in recent years. And there's more on the pressures

:09:05. > :09:07.facing the NHS in the new series of Inside Out, which starts tonight

:09:08. > :09:10.on BBC One at 7.30. Next tonight, hundreds of people

:09:11. > :09:12.gathered to release balloons near the school that Katie Rough

:09:13. > :09:16.went to in York on what would have Katie died after being

:09:17. > :09:18.found with serious A 15-year-old girl's been

:09:19. > :09:22.charged with her murder. Her family wanted every colour

:09:23. > :09:26.of the rainbow to represent the exuberance of their little Katie

:09:27. > :09:29.and balloons to mark what would have An invitation on Facebook

:09:30. > :09:37.for anyone to attend touched hundreds of people,

:09:38. > :09:43.who waited quietly in Westfield Park to write a balloon message for Katie

:09:44. > :09:55.with thoughts and prayers or sign a book, not for condolences

:09:56. > :09:57.but to celebrate her life. I was asked if I would consider

:09:58. > :10:00.supplying and filling 200 balloons and I immediately said,

:10:01. > :10:02.yes, I will. I have never stopped

:10:03. > :10:04.thinking about the family and their situation and,

:10:05. > :10:06.yes, I was moved by it I think it's nice how

:10:07. > :10:12.the community have come together. I think we need to...everybody show

:10:13. > :10:15.support in circumstances like this and just celebrate

:10:16. > :10:18.Katie's life, really. Especially being a young lass

:10:19. > :10:30.from our area, you don't expect stuff like that to happen

:10:31. > :10:32.in your own area. And I've got a son who's a year

:10:33. > :10:36.older and it just makes you think. Katie was found with knife wounds

:10:37. > :10:38.near a playing field Just two days later her family had

:10:39. > :10:45.the terrible ordeal of seeing a 15-year-old girl charged

:10:46. > :10:51.with Katie's murder. At the spot where she died hundreds

:10:52. > :10:53.of flowers have been laid in an expression of the empathy

:10:54. > :10:56.and concern of the wider York community, who supported

:10:57. > :10:59.the family again today. Katie's parents Alison

:11:00. > :11:02.and Paul Rough were comforted by the Archbishop of York,

:11:03. > :11:04.who accompanied them. As hundreds of balloons were let

:11:05. > :11:27.go it made a spectacle of extreme poignancy,

:11:28. > :11:28.expressing so much more An inquest has heard that a gunman

:11:29. > :11:42.who killed 38 tourists on a beach in Tunisia, including

:11:43. > :11:45.a couple from Yorkshire, could have Sharon and Christopher Bell

:11:46. > :11:51.from Killingbeck in Leeds were among 30 British holidaymakers who died

:11:52. > :11:56.in the attack in Sousse in 2015. The inquest, which began in London

:11:57. > :11:58.today, was told that local security units "deliberately

:11:59. > :12:00.and unjustifiably" delayed A 78-year-old man has been jailed

:12:01. > :12:09.for 26 years for historic sex abuse Terence O'Reilly from

:12:10. > :12:15.South Elmsall pleaded guilty to 17 sexual offences against two

:12:16. > :12:19.girls, including six of rape. His crimes took place from the late

:12:20. > :12:23.'60s to the late '90s but it wasn't until 2015 that one

:12:24. > :12:31.of his victims told police. For many of us a New Year means

:12:32. > :12:35.a new start, a chance to get fitter, healthier and feel

:12:36. > :12:36.good about ourselves. But when Sarah Stanley

:12:37. > :12:39.from Harrogate tried to do just that she got laughed at by two young

:12:40. > :12:42.men at her local gym. The gym's owner was so shocked

:12:43. > :12:45.by their reaction he said he would ban them, and he's taken it

:12:46. > :12:48.upon himself to oversee Well, we'll speak to Sarah

:12:49. > :12:52.and her gym instructor, But first, do you

:12:53. > :13:41.remember this advert? trainers and This Girl Can took the

:13:42. > :13:51.nation by storm. Why haven't attitudes changed? Sarah, what

:13:52. > :13:55.happened? I went on the Monday, determined but really nervous. I

:13:56. > :14:04.went in my black jogging bottoms and lack T-shirt, not very bright, and I

:14:05. > :14:11.had my induction and two guys nudged each other and pointed and laughed

:14:12. > :14:15.at me. How did that make you feel? After the induction I went out and

:14:16. > :14:21.nearly started crying, I was mortified. I felt really belittled,

:14:22. > :14:26.because I am actually going to the gym to do something about my health

:14:27. > :14:34.and vigour. James, why did it annoy you so much? -- my health and

:14:35. > :14:38.figure. First of all, this is a very isolated incident.

:14:39. > :14:39.Sarah's not alone - according to England Athletics

:14:40. > :14:45.a third of British women have been harassed while out running alone.

:14:46. > :14:52.I just got talking to Sarah through normal interaction. I was horrified

:14:53. > :14:56.by what happened, but to see the physical effects of that, the way

:14:57. > :15:02.she was trembling in her voice, it is something you don't want to see.

:15:03. > :15:08.If she had never come back I would have been devastated. You have both

:15:09. > :15:16.put this experience on Facebook and you had quite a response, didn't

:15:17. > :15:21.you? Huge. What were people saying? It is all positive, we have had no

:15:22. > :15:29.negative comments at all. James posted something on Facebook and it

:15:30. > :15:39.got shared over 500 times. 700 times. What have you got lined up

:15:40. > :15:45.for Sarah? The post got over 2000 likes. We got reaction up and down

:15:46. > :15:50.the country, from Spain, Australia, comments coming in, but the common

:15:51. > :15:55.do nominate was that people have a fear of the gym. This is something

:15:56. > :15:59.we didn't think about, but if you have a fear of intimidation about

:16:00. > :16:05.your fitness, we train people with all kinds of things, diabetes,

:16:06. > :16:10.depression and lymphoedema, sciatica, all of these different

:16:11. > :16:15.things we can treat for. If people are intimidated we need to do

:16:16. > :16:23.something. You speak very well. Good luck and keep us posted.

:16:24. > :16:25.Now, a school in Sheffield is setting the pace

:16:26. > :16:31.Phillimore Primary School has just won a national award after getting

:16:32. > :16:34.90% of its Year Four children to swim a length.

:16:35. > :16:35.That's well above the national average -

:16:36. > :16:38.the school says it's down to getting the whole community involved.

:16:39. > :16:45.With a lot of encouragement and enthusiastic coaching, these

:16:46. > :16:48.children from Phillimore Primary School really get the most out of

:16:49. > :16:53.The teachers constantly praise their pupils and

:16:54. > :17:03.To start with, specially for these guys, it's

:17:04. > :17:07.about getting them in, getting them used to having

:17:08. > :17:12.A lot of children don't even like to put their face in the water.

:17:13. > :17:14.What makes Phillimore stand out is their progress.

:17:15. > :17:19.They've received a national award from the Amateur

:17:20. > :17:22.Swimming Association after ensuring the majority of their year four

:17:23. > :17:25.On the whole probably 90% of the time

:17:26. > :17:27.everybody is well up for it but any new children,

:17:28. > :17:30.we have a lot of Roman Slovak children who have arrived

:17:31. > :17:32.recently in this country, there is a bit of fear

:17:33. > :17:35.and reluctance, and what we do then is invite parents onto

:17:36. > :17:38.the bus to the swimming pool so they can see what is going on.

:17:39. > :17:43.I have learned how to swim better and better and then I got better and

:17:44. > :17:49.better. When I started I was scared and I didn't like it but once I have

:17:50. > :17:58.been doing it is nice. Today's lesson might be over but the skills

:17:59. > :18:00.they have learnt will keep them safe around water for the rest of their

:18:01. > :18:01.lives. Tanya's here now with all

:18:02. > :18:03.the weekend's sport and we've been hearing from the new co-owner

:18:04. > :18:14.of Leeds United. Yes, very much a sense of calm at

:18:15. > :18:20.Leeds United, a surprise after recent times. He spoke on Saturday

:18:21. > :18:27.morning and sat alongside Massimo Cellino as he saw his side beat

:18:28. > :18:32.Derby County 1-0. A really good performance and they are now third

:18:33. > :18:36.in the chap macro. He talked about supporting Garry Monk, not upsetting

:18:37. > :18:45.things, about wanting perhaps to buy back Elland Road that no promises.

:18:46. > :18:51.-- they are now third in the championship. He talked about

:18:52. > :18:56.stability and sustainability. His key aim is to make the club stable

:18:57. > :19:01.and move forward. The goal is to be sustainable and

:19:02. > :19:08.stay in the Championship. It is not an easy league to belong, so my job

:19:09. > :19:17.is to find a good balance between making the club progressing and

:19:18. > :19:22.improving infrastructure but at the same time don't sacrifice too much

:19:23. > :19:26.competitiveness on the pitch. In the Yorkshire derby,

:19:27. > :19:28.Sheffield Wednesday beat Huddersfield Town

:19:29. > :19:30.2-0 at Hillsborough. Both are still in the playoffs

:19:31. > :19:33.in the Championship. Elsewhere, Rotherham

:19:34. > :19:34.and Chesterfield both got much-needed wins in their efforts

:19:35. > :19:37.to beat the drop in the Championship And Doncaster stay top of League

:19:38. > :19:40.2 after another win. Little to get too excited

:19:41. > :19:43.about at Hillsborough between Sheffield Wednesday and

:19:44. > :19:44.Huddersfield. Chris Lowe's free kick

:19:45. > :19:47.for the Terriers the highlight. That was until Ross Wallace produced

:19:48. > :19:50.this screamer from 30 yards. The Terriers tried to bite

:19:51. > :19:55.back but weren't helped Into added time, Fernando Forestieri

:19:56. > :20:02.made the game safe for Wednesday. Against one of in my opinion

:20:03. > :20:08.the strongest sides in this competition, because really

:20:09. > :20:11.they are a good team. I think we've seen a good football

:20:12. > :20:16.match from two strong sides. At the New York Stadium,

:20:17. > :20:30.Jerry Yates tapped home to make it Norwich did equalise but the Millers

:20:31. > :20:36.won it through Tom Adeyemi's header. Rotherham now nine points off safety

:20:37. > :20:39.and in with a small chance Barnsley went down

:20:40. > :20:46.2-0 away at Fulham. In League 1, Dan Gardner

:20:47. > :20:49.scored this belter to give Chesterfield a much-needed win

:20:50. > :20:54.against fellow strugglers Coventry. In the shock result of the day

:20:55. > :21:03.the Blades were cut to pieces away at Walsall - Sheffield United's

:21:04. > :21:06.six-game winning streak ended Bradford went down 1-0

:21:07. > :21:10.away at Shrewsbury. And in League 2 Doncaster beat

:21:11. > :21:13.Barnet 3-1, James Coppinger Rovers stay four points clear

:21:14. > :21:23.at the top of the table. It's a been one of the most

:21:24. > :21:26.remarkable losing streaks in sport, Pontefract's James Willstrop has

:21:27. > :21:34.lost 19 times over that period to his big Yorkshire rival,

:21:35. > :21:36.Sheffield's Nick Matthew, but yesterday in New

:21:37. > :21:40.York he finally won. It took him 73 minutes,

:21:41. > :21:43.and he had to come from two games to one down to do it,

:21:44. > :21:46.but he is through to the third round There was no punching

:21:47. > :21:51.the air or anything, but he did say afterwards

:21:52. > :22:01.he was pleased. A fantastic achievement.

:22:02. > :22:07.Obviously they are both from our patch so I am very neutral but I am

:22:08. > :22:08.very pleased for James. Fingers crossed he goes on to win the

:22:09. > :22:11.tournament. Now, in case you didn't realise

:22:12. > :22:14.today is supposed to be the most Well, we decided we wouldn't

:22:15. > :22:21.let this get us down, so we sent our happiness reporter,

:22:22. > :22:42.Phil Bodmer, to find out how people They were banging out the big tunes

:22:43. > :22:48.at the bus station in Huddersfield today. No Blue Monday here. We have

:22:49. > :22:53.had loads of people dancing and happy, we have given people free CDs

:22:54. > :23:02.and they have smiled a lot and that is all we wanted, make the world are

:23:03. > :23:09.happier place. Doctor Cliff Arnold calculated the equation by a formula

:23:10. > :23:13.of six factors, weather, debt, times since -- time since Christmas, time

:23:14. > :23:20.since failing our New Year resolutions and are in need to take

:23:21. > :23:27.action. I think it is hype. It is a PR company which asked the doctor to

:23:28. > :23:32.create an equation, which day is the gloomiest in January, so that

:23:33. > :23:37.holiday companies can sell us holidays. You are in debt anyway,

:23:38. > :23:42.why would you want to buy a holiday? On the subject of travel, what did

:23:43. > :23:46.our bemused commuters think of the attempts to cheer them up. I am

:23:47. > :23:54.probably in a better mood than I was. I imagine it cheered up some

:23:55. > :23:58.people, not all. If they woke up cheerful they will be cheerful for

:23:59. > :24:05.the rest of the day and vice versa. I think it is quite jolly. It is

:24:06. > :24:10.nice to see. Heaven knows, if you are still miserable now, here is a

:24:11. > :24:15.suggestion to clear the mind. Yun Yoga helps in a lot of ways, we

:24:16. > :24:21.connect through the breath and we clear the mind. At the end of a good

:24:22. > :24:27.Yoga practice the mind state has shifted and the things that were

:24:28. > :24:37.agitating at the beginning of the practice have shifted and

:24:38. > :24:46.diminished. From banishing the winter blues at least some of us

:24:47. > :24:54.managed to shift this grey miserable day.

:24:55. > :25:05.Me and Amy are on lates tonight, I am always happy when that happens.

:25:06. > :25:10.This picture shows the intensity of the sea. That is from one of our

:25:11. > :25:18.former weathermen. This one was taken on Saturday when

:25:19. > :25:28.there was still snow across the Pennines.

:25:29. > :25:36.A lot of cloud this week despite the high pressure in charge. Becoming

:25:37. > :25:40.dry by mid week and a lot of cloud Thursday and Friday, a few breaks

:25:41. > :25:44.and mist and patchy fog and places. High pressure very dominant across

:25:45. > :25:50.Yorkshire this week and it looks like next week, the end of January

:25:51. > :25:54.into early February, we get the Atlantic back so it will be milder

:25:55. > :25:58.but rain at times. We have a slow-moving weather front bringing

:25:59. > :26:03.rain and drizzle across Yorkshire today and that continues to bring

:26:04. > :26:06.dreary weather across Yorkshire this evening and overnight, mist and fog

:26:07. > :26:10.will be shrouding the top of the Pennines. With all of this cloud

:26:11. > :26:22.around there is no chance of a frost, lows of four Celsius. The sun

:26:23. > :26:29.rises at 8:40am, -- at 8:14am. It is a damp and dreary start, light rain

:26:30. > :26:37.and drizzle all day, fog continuing to affect high-level routes. Another

:26:38. > :26:43.whether the brunt will introduced -- weather front will introduce rain

:26:44. > :26:47.and South Yorkshire. Temperatures will not really recover from the

:26:48. > :26:53.overnight values, we are looking at something like six, perhaps seven in

:26:54. > :26:57.Leeds and Sheffield. The boring weather continues, Wednesday looks

:26:58. > :27:00.dry, perhaps a bit of brightness Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and

:27:01. > :27:04.Friday, where the cloud breaks there will be some mist and fog which we

:27:05. > :27:11.will struggle to ship and we keep that fine weather through next

:27:12. > :27:20.weekend. That is it from us.

:27:21. > :27:25.We will of course keep you up-to-date with that story from

:27:26. > :27:48.Dinnington. Paul and Amy will be back with the late news.

:27:49. > :27:53.Let me see them hands up. Let's do this.

:27:54. > :27:58.Glastonbury! Make some noise!

:27:59. > :28:00.How you doing, Big Weekend? Get ready.

:28:01. > :28:11.Go solo, Hyde Park. Don't believe you.
