:00:00. > :00:00.Oood evening and welcome to Thursday's Look North.
:00:00. > :00:07.On the programme tonight, a double helping of good news
:00:08. > :00:12.1700 jobs at Tata Steel factories are saved as an Indian company does
:00:13. > :00:20.We'll hear the details of the agreement and what it means
:00:21. > :00:25.Racing car manufacturers McLaren choose Rotherham
:00:26. > :00:31.for a new ?50 million factory creating 200 jobs.
:00:32. > :00:34.Hundreds of mourners pay their respects as a teenage girl
:00:35. > :00:43.stabbed to death in Rotherham is laid to rest.
:00:44. > :00:50.Sing the song of Yorkshire from the Humber to the tease. Of horses,
:00:51. > :00:53.terriers, pudding and a cheese. Well, the cold weather
:00:54. > :00:58.looks set to continue. The risk of some snow for the hills
:00:59. > :01:00.into Saturday morning. Good evening - and it's not often
:01:01. > :01:15.that we can start the programme The luxury super car manufacturer
:01:16. > :01:20.McLaren is creating a ?50 million Meanwhile Tata Steel
:01:21. > :01:27.is selling its speciality steel business for ?100 million
:01:28. > :01:30.to Liberty House, which will safeguard
:01:31. > :01:32.the sites in Rotherham, Let's cross first to our political
:01:33. > :01:37.editor, Len Tingle, who's in Rotherham with the latest on this
:01:38. > :01:52.Tata Steel announcement. Well, this is the old plant here in
:01:53. > :01:55.Rotherham. You can see the Tata sign behind me. That will change to
:01:56. > :01:59.Liberty House in the next couple of months. The same will happen just
:02:00. > :02:04.down the road at rings worth and at Stockbridge eight about 50 miles
:02:05. > :02:08.away. There was so much concern for the future of these plants that the
:02:09. > :02:11.local community and trade unions held protest marches through the
:02:12. > :02:14.summer because they wanted these plants to be sold. Tata said they
:02:15. > :02:19.did not want to continue but there was concern that no buyer would be
:02:20. > :02:26.found. The concern was that they were unprofitable because of
:02:27. > :02:29.international competition, unfair international competition,
:02:30. > :02:33.particularly dumping from China. Today's sale has certainly lifted
:02:34. > :02:39.the clouds over these plants. That was certainly the reaction that I
:02:40. > :02:42.got from Chris Williamson, the senior convenor for the trade unions
:02:43. > :02:43.here. I spoke to him a couple of hours ago.
:02:44. > :02:46.Given the right investment and given our product that we make
:02:47. > :02:49.we should be able to be fit for the future and
:02:50. > :02:52.move on and be great for this area because without this steel industry,
:02:53. > :03:07.So, the unions seem positive. What is the future for the plants? Well,
:03:08. > :03:14.these are specialist steels, high steels. They are in the market of
:03:15. > :03:18.automotive, aerospace, the offshore oil and gas industry. High-quality
:03:19. > :03:22.steels that have a market. There is an international competition for
:03:23. > :03:30.them but the understanding is that Liberty House, which now becomes the
:03:31. > :03:33.biggest steel-maker in the UK, will find markets for these, put more
:03:34. > :03:39.investment in hand hopefully increase the output. Reaction from
:03:40. > :03:44.Tata was that because the workforce and the management at these three
:03:45. > :03:47.plants have worked very well over the past few months and last couple
:03:48. > :03:52.of years to be able to turn these businesses around, that is what has
:03:53. > :04:00.attracted the new buyer and the new investment and certainly when I
:04:01. > :04:02.spoke to Leanne deeming from Tarter -- from Tata earlier today, her view
:04:03. > :04:05.was it was down to the workforce. I think what it is is about a credit
:04:06. > :04:08.to the employees and trade unions and the management here is being
:04:09. > :04:11.about pulling together and really finding something which will make us
:04:12. > :04:14.a fit for the future through that transformation plan and focusing
:04:15. > :04:17.on the value-added product such as aerospace and others, which take us
:04:18. > :04:29.forward for the future. Well, I understand there are still a
:04:30. > :04:32.few little things to sort out but it is thought that the final deal will
:04:33. > :04:36.he find within the next couple of months and that is when these signs
:04:37. > :04:38.will be shifted and the new ones will go up. Ron here in Rotherham,
:04:39. > :04:41.back to you in the studio. Next tonight, and the luxury super
:04:42. > :04:43.car manufacturer McLaren is going to build a ?50 million
:04:44. > :04:45.chassis factory, creating Well, the Liberty House group
:04:46. > :04:47.is buying the Speciality steel business from
:04:48. > :04:49.Tata for ?100 million. So what does that
:04:50. > :04:51.mean for its future? Jon Bolton, the Chief Executive
:04:52. > :04:54.Officer of Liberty Steel UK Plates, told us why he was optimistic
:04:55. > :04:56.for the future. I think it is a very positive
:04:57. > :04:59.reinforcement of the strength of the plants in South Yorkshire
:05:00. > :05:01.and indeed in the Midlands We strongly believe in the future
:05:02. > :05:06.for these businesses. They have got a very positive
:05:07. > :05:12.and strong product range and they are a technically competent
:05:13. > :05:16.and capable workforce so we think the money that pays for this
:05:17. > :05:19.business is very good value. There is always uncertainty
:05:20. > :05:25.when the business changes hands. Can you guarantee that jobs
:05:26. > :05:27.are going to be saved, I think a major positive
:05:28. > :05:32.of the announcement they made today is to remove that uncertainty over
:05:33. > :05:35.jobs and yes, we are saying that we will maintain the same
:05:36. > :05:38.jobs in this business as there are at the moment
:05:39. > :05:41.and indeed we will look for ways to actually build this business
:05:42. > :05:44.and grow this business And as I understand it,
:05:45. > :05:50.the pension fund has How have you managed
:05:51. > :05:57.to resolve that? I would not say that pensions
:05:58. > :05:59.has been a stumbling This is clearly an issue that Tata
:06:00. > :06:03.are dealing with at the moment We will look to honour whatever
:06:04. > :06:08.the employees decide they want to do through the ballot that is taking
:06:09. > :06:13.place at the moment. We look forward to engaging
:06:14. > :06:15.with them and consulting with them in the very near future
:06:16. > :06:18.about our plans for the business. And what about the future,
:06:19. > :06:21.are you in this for the long haul? This is a major strategic
:06:22. > :06:24.move for liberty. This is a major strategic
:06:25. > :06:26.move for Liberty. Liberty has a vision for steel
:06:27. > :06:28.manufacturing and manufacturing in general in the UK,
:06:29. > :06:31.which is our green steel vision where we take recycled steel
:06:32. > :06:33.that is arising in the UK, melt it in the electric furnaces
:06:34. > :06:36.at Rotherham and that steel is applied in the downstream
:06:37. > :06:38.processes where we are These are technically advanced
:06:39. > :06:46.engineered steels that, as I have said, support
:06:47. > :06:48.the automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, industrial
:06:49. > :06:49.engineering sectors. OK, John Bolton, thank you very much
:06:50. > :06:52.for your time tonight. Next tonight, and the luxury super
:06:53. > :06:58.car manufacturer McLaren is going to build a ?50 million
:06:59. > :07:02.chassis factory, creating The factory will build
:07:03. > :07:08.parts for the super cars at the University
:07:09. > :07:10.of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research
:07:11. > :07:11.Centre near Rotherham. Construction's due to start soon,
:07:12. > :07:13.with two years of research and development work
:07:14. > :07:25.ahead of production. If you like your toys, you are
:07:26. > :07:32.probably familiar with McLaren's supercars. The ultimate in precision
:07:33. > :07:37.engineering and pretty soon, made in Yorkshire. Well, this bit anyway. It
:07:38. > :07:41.is the chassis, which up until now has been manufactured outside the
:07:42. > :07:45.UK. But today a deal was signed which will bring production to the
:07:46. > :07:49.Sheffield city region. This is a big investment for us full stop to have
:07:50. > :07:53.very supportive partners makes it work. Actually because there has
:07:54. > :08:00.been is kind of work in the region for a time, growing, quite a bit of
:08:01. > :08:03.aerospace herewith air bus, Rolls-Royce, there are school people
:08:04. > :08:09.here already in the area, so we are not starting from scratch. -- there
:08:10. > :08:13.are skilled people here. The prototype will be made here at
:08:14. > :08:16.Sheffield University's factory, just up the road from the advanced
:08:17. > :08:20.manufacturing Park. It is that the kind of investment the region is
:08:21. > :08:23.pushing for. This is a fully commercial manufacturing
:08:24. > :08:26.environment. Stuff that is made in this place can do things, can fly
:08:27. > :08:33.the stop the University of Sheffield was hurling supplier of the year. We
:08:34. > :08:37.have eliminated the gap between ideas, research and products. We are
:08:38. > :08:40.the only place to have done it in that way. The price tag on these
:08:41. > :08:44.cars beans they are way outside the budget of most of us but the fact
:08:45. > :08:48.that at least part of them is going to be built in the region is a
:08:49. > :08:53.fantastic calling card. It is also a brilliant way to get more young
:08:54. > :08:56.people interested in engineering. 200 jobs will be created here,
:08:57. > :09:00.including a number of apprentice posts. The first of those has just
:09:01. > :09:05.been given the good news. It is exciting. And yes, it was pretty
:09:06. > :09:13.unexpected. I did not expect it to come along and iCal myself extremely
:09:14. > :09:17.lucky. -- I count myself extremely lucky. To be working on machines
:09:18. > :09:20.like that is ready quite something. The technical bit is the material
:09:21. > :09:25.the chassis will be made from, something that will help develop
:09:26. > :09:29.more electric cars going forward. Realistically, most people just like
:09:30. > :09:32.the way they look for stop a lot of manufacturing and engineering. It is
:09:33. > :09:36.a fascinating discipline but when this is the product that results
:09:37. > :09:38.from it, you can't help getting inspired, motivated and excited and
:09:39. > :09:44.it ready does work and all the people that work for us are really
:09:45. > :09:47.proud of the products that we make. The first Yorkshire bill chassis
:09:48. > :09:49.could be Parry off the line by summer next year. -- the first
:09:50. > :09:52.Yorkshire tilt chassis. Getting the new contract
:09:53. > :09:55.from Mclaren is a huge boost for the Sheffield City Region -
:09:56. > :09:58.not just in terms of jobs, but also in terms of its reputation
:09:59. > :10:00.for advanced manufacturing. Leigh Bramall is deputy leader
:10:01. > :10:11.of Sheffield City Council Just how much of a coup is this to
:10:12. > :10:17.get McLaren would you say? It is a massive coup and it tilts part of
:10:18. > :10:21.wider brands for an advanced Manufacturing innovation district
:10:22. > :10:24.between Sheffield and Rotherham. -- part of wider plans. We already have
:10:25. > :10:28.Rolls-Royce doing research and development, so there is a good
:10:29. > :10:31.track record of commitment that we can do this sort of thing but there
:10:32. > :10:33.is no doubt that getting a company like McLaren relocating from
:10:34. > :10:40.elsewhere in Europe back to the UK in the Sheffield on a more high-tech
:10:41. > :10:43.jobs, is a huge boost to our plans. There was concern after Brexit that
:10:44. > :10:48.investors would not want to invest in the UK. If that still a concern
:10:49. > :10:51.for you? It remains to be seen what happens with that. There is a lot of
:10:52. > :10:55.uncertainty around Brexit and it depends what kind of ultimate deal
:10:56. > :10:57.and exit we have but certainly speaking to McLaren, they have
:10:58. > :11:01.considered all the factors before making this investment and they
:11:02. > :11:06.still believe that the expertise that they will have access to in
:11:07. > :11:09.research and development that can undertake in Sheffield and Rotherham
:11:10. > :11:12.more than makes up for any negatives. They are happy to go
:11:13. > :11:17.forward with the investment. McLaren is good news but Tata is also great
:11:18. > :11:21.news. That news might have a knock-on effect for other businesses
:11:22. > :11:24.as well. Both announcements have a knock on effects were other
:11:25. > :11:28.businesses because they will both invest in the supply chain and keep
:11:29. > :11:36.complete in the area going and gain business for them. A confident these
:11:37. > :11:40.as well. A massive confidence boost. We debate the final outcome for the
:11:41. > :11:44.jobs because that is unclear looking at some of the announcements that
:11:45. > :11:47.have come through the day, so a cautious welcome my thing but
:11:48. > :11:51.overall a fantastic day for Sheffield, Rotherham, Sheffield city
:11:52. > :11:53.region, it shows what we can do when we work together. Not a bad day for
:11:54. > :11:56.the Council. Get, fantastic. Looking ahead to the
:11:57. > :11:59.start of Super League. Tanya rounds up what's in store
:12:00. > :12:02.for the region's teams this season and we've got Big Eorl Crabtree
:12:03. > :12:09.in the studio as well. Hundreds of mourners have attended
:12:10. > :12:12.the funeral of 16-year-old school girl Leonne Weeks,
:12:13. > :12:14.who was stabbed to death last Her family thanked the community
:12:15. > :12:20.for their support and say "their beautiful daughter is loved
:12:21. > :12:23.and sadly missed" as A horse-drawn hearse
:12:24. > :12:30.carried Leonne's Coffin. Hundreds followed in
:12:31. > :12:33.procession through the town Those unable to squeeze inside stood
:12:34. > :12:43.silent in the bitter cold outside, heads bowed in poignant reflection
:12:44. > :12:50.at a young life lived and lost. She was a lively 16-year-old but now
:12:51. > :12:56.it's grief and the sense on the one hand wanting to remember
:12:57. > :12:59.Leonne with thankfulness but also the terrible loss that
:13:00. > :13:05.so many people have suffered. Leonne's body was discovered on a
:13:06. > :13:08.pathway in Dinnington on January 15. An 18-year-old man has been
:13:09. > :13:12.charged with her murder. Leonne was such a good
:13:13. > :13:14.friend to us all. Words cannot describe how much
:13:15. > :13:21.we love and miss her. The congregation heard
:13:22. > :13:23.how Leonne was growing One of her school friends
:13:24. > :13:28.sang during the service. # Oh, I hope you're dancing
:13:29. > :13:36.in the sky # And I hope you're singing
:13:37. > :13:46.in the angel's choir There were so many flowers
:13:47. > :13:49.they had to be carried Among scores of messages,
:13:50. > :13:52.one from her brother Levi, which read "words cannot describe

:15:24. > :15:26.Now, on Monday we featured the story of Ann Bardsley who had been stuck

:16:00. > :16:10.Tanya here's to look ahead to the next 8 months!
:16:11. > :16:16.It's a big year for Rugby league with the World Cup at the end of it,
:16:17. > :16:19.but there are few domestic issues up for grabs before we get to that.
:16:20. > :16:22.Eorl Crabtee will give us his thoughts on the new season
:16:23. > :16:25.in a moment, but first let's hear from our four Super League coaches.
:16:26. > :16:28.12 teams are hitting the long and winding road to Old Trafford,
:16:29. > :16:30.with the hope of picking up the Super League trophy

:16:40. > :16:42.all the headlines but they have strengthened well to add to the
:16:43. > :16:48.Many are tipping them to pick up silverware this season.
:16:49. > :16:54.I think we are capable of challenging on all fronts this year.
:16:55. > :16:58.I have felt that way for a few years but for whatever reason it
:16:59. > :17:00.hasn't quite happened at the end of competitions.
:17:01. > :17:03.This year, I think we've got a great chance but you can talk
:17:04. > :17:05.as much as you want, pre-season has been fantastic,
:17:06. > :17:08.now it is about delivering on what we think we can do.
:17:09. > :17:09.COMMENTATOR: Here's Danny Brough with a 1-pointer!
:17:10. > :17:11.A Danny Brough dropped goal saved Huddersfield
:17:12. > :17:17.The message this season is simple, must do better.
:17:18. > :17:19.Hopefully a little bit more composure in attack.
:17:20. > :17:21.A little bit more resolved, defensively, you know,
:17:22. > :17:29.we let in far too many points last year and some soft points, really.
:17:30. > :17:31.We leaked 25 points a game on average I think

:17:44. > :17:45.The Rhinos have resisted wholesale changes.
:17:46. > :17:50.The year before we had a fantastic year.
:17:51. > :17:53.12 months later we find ourselves, you know, at a certain time
:17:54. > :17:56.where we were swimming around the bottom of the league.
:17:57. > :17:59.It wasn't because they became poor players overnight.
:18:00. > :18:02.You know, the answer is not always changing players.
:18:03. > :18:07.Under coach Chris Chester, Wakefield climbed into
:18:08. > :18:12.They have held onto their young talent and
:18:13. > :18:16.They are looking to keep climbing that ladder.
:18:17. > :18:19.We have spoken about improving on last year.
:18:20. > :18:27.We certainly feel the top six is achievable this year,
:18:28. > :18:31.that is a goal we have set and we weren't far away last year
:18:32. > :18:34.Will the trophy head back to West Yorkshire?
:18:35. > :18:42.If it does, who will be taking it home?
:18:43. > :18:50.Well, I have got my biggest shoes on to deal with my guest, Eorl
:18:51. > :18:52.Crabtree. Is it strange to be talking to me here rather than
:18:53. > :18:58.preparing this weekend to play with the Giants? You would think I would
:18:59. > :19:00.be used to it now but I know what you mean, that sensation of being
:19:01. > :19:04.able to walk out onto the field with the rest of the lads, that is going
:19:05. > :19:08.to hurt the little bit. That is the bit I worried about, all of this
:19:09. > :19:12.preseason I haven't missed it, but that is because I have seen the boys
:19:13. > :19:17.training, training really hard. How will they do without you this
:19:18. > :19:19.season? It is tough to say. Last season was really bad pass.

:25:05. > :25:14.Quite a bit of snow there as you can see in that photograph. The next
:25:15. > :25:18.one, if you have not done that walk, it is absolutely beautiful. And the
:25:19. > :25:29.third one, that is stunning. A beautiful sunrise. Keep the pictures
:25:30. > :25:33.coming in. Let us have a look at the headline for the next 24 hours. It
:25:34. > :25:37.is cloudy and grey. There will be a wintry flurry but an interesting
:25:38. > :25:43.feature coming in on Friday night into Saturday morning, the showers
:25:44. > :25:46.are going to become heavier and more frequent and I suspect there could
:25:47. > :25:50.be several centimetres of snow over the hills, the North Yorkshire moors
:25:51. > :25:57.and the Pennine drew the course of Saturday. Otherwise sleet and rain
:25:58. > :26:01.is more likely. I think the night it is cloudy, damp. There will be
:26:02. > :26:05.flurries in places that may cause a problem on untreated services with
:26:06. > :26:12.ice a hazard. The lowest temperatures tonight around or just
:26:13. > :26:23.below freezing in many areas. A moderate east north-east wind. The
:26:24. > :26:27.sun rises in the morning at 7:37am. So, it is another drab day. It is
:26:28. > :26:30.cloudy and there will be some brighter spells coming through but a
:26:31. > :26:34.fair few wintry showers from the word go that will continue to feed
:26:35. > :26:38.in from the North Sea. A slight covering on the North York moors but
:26:39. > :26:42.I think once you get to the west and south of Yorkshire, very little,
:26:43. > :26:46.just a few flurries here and there. The wind will eventually back off to
:26:47. > :26:53.the north-east and could freshen especially along the coast and over
:26:54. > :26:56.the hills. It will feel cold. Maximum temperatures, the average is
:26:57. > :27:01.seven Celsius for February but we are looking at higher temperatures
:27:02. > :27:09.of around three Celsius tomorrow. I think the era one or two over the
:27:10. > :27:13.high ground. -- I think one or two Celsius over high ground. Friday
:27:14. > :27:17.night into Saturday, that little feature comes in, so it will pack
:27:18. > :27:23.the showers up. Shall we outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow. Not
:27:24. > :27:27.exclusively over the hills. Sunday quietens town, slightly less cold. I
:27:28. > :27:32.think next week dominantly dry and a dozen less cold. If you have any
