:00:00. > :00:00.Our top story tonight: for news where you are.

:00:00. > :00:07.Out of business - after 80 years, Yorkshire's Ritz is forced

:00:08. > :00:10.to close its doors after a row with its London namesake.

:00:11. > :00:26.I can't believe anybody has ever mistaken a ballroom in west

:00:27. > :00:28.Yorkshire for one of the most famous hotels in the world in London.

:00:29. > :00:30.We'll find out if there's a legal case to answer.

:00:31. > :00:32.Also on the programme, a family fighting for justice.

:00:33. > :00:35.Ten years after he was knocked down in a hit-and-run accident,

:00:36. > :00:38.police make a fresh appeal to find Bill Hendry's killer.

:00:39. > :00:41.In sport, kick-off at a Challenge Cup match.

:00:42. > :00:47.Footage emerges of a fight at a Keighley Cougars game.

:00:48. > :00:52.And the Harrogate girl providing a re-homing service

:00:53. > :00:55.An unsettled, cold and often changeable week as we head

:00:56. > :01:09.Don't forget to join me for that week ahead forecast.

:01:10. > :01:14.After 80 years, the Ritz Ballroom in Brighouse

:01:15. > :01:16.has closed its door, as a result of a legal row

:01:17. > :01:18.with the world famous Ritz Hotel in London.

:01:19. > :01:21.The Yorkshire landmark was told it had to change its name,

:01:22. > :01:26.even though it had traded under this name for eight decades.

:01:27. > :01:29.Now a band from Harrogate, which was due to play at the venue,

:01:30. > :01:31.has waded into the legal row, as our business correspondent

:01:32. > :01:49.hope that someone gets my message in a bottle #.

:01:50. > :01:53.The lyrics to say one thing but this band used an envelope to send their

:01:54. > :02:03.message to the hotel in London, a tongue in cheek invoice.

:02:04. > :02:09.Failure to comply will result in us having to slum it at the Savoy

:02:10. > :02:14.Hotel, not the cabbage but the hotel.

:02:15. > :02:18.They were due to perform at the Brighouse Ritz but a breath of legal

:02:19. > :02:23.action by the London hotel forced the venue to close.

:02:24. > :02:28.It is farcical. There are 300 miles between the two venues and I cannot

:02:29. > :02:31.believe anybody has ever mistaken a ballroom in west Yorkshire for one

:02:32. > :02:38.of the most famous hotels in the world in London. But that was what

:02:39. > :02:43.prompted us to write the letter, the absurdity.

:02:44. > :02:49.It has been the Ritz for 80 years, so the new owners never expected a

:02:50. > :02:53.row over the names, and could potentially call time. From the

:02:54. > :02:57.roadside it looks like it is all over, since the sign is down and the

:02:58. > :03:00.venue has stopped trading, but behind the scenes the owners say

:03:01. > :03:03.they are seeking legal advice. Although they would not speak on

:03:04. > :03:09.camera today, they call me they have not given up the fight just yet. The

:03:10. > :03:13.other Ritz has so far declined to comment but one local and he is

:03:14. > :03:20.hopeful he can intervene. As we know, there are many with the

:03:21. > :03:25.name Ritz across the UK, ballrooms and cafes, as with the one in

:03:26. > :03:30.Brighouse, so I cannot quite understand why they would want to

:03:31. > :03:36.attack the Ritz in Brighouse. But we have asked the owner to supply us

:03:37. > :03:40.with the documents, and I am happy to look into it.

:03:41. > :03:44.Thousands of people who have already signed the petition to save the name

:03:45. > :03:48.Hobbit is not already too late for the Brighouse Ritz. -- they hope it

:03:49. > :03:50.is not too late. So where can the Ritz in Brighouse

:03:51. > :03:53.take the legal battle now? We're joined by Liz Ward

:03:54. > :03:54.from Virtuoso Legal, which specialises in

:03:55. > :04:04.intellectual property law. Do you think that the Ritz in

:04:05. > :04:06.Brighouse is right to take this step?

:04:07. > :04:11.They should start training again because they are being bullied. They

:04:12. > :04:15.have used it for 80 years, the name, and I think they should carry on

:04:16. > :04:18.using it because they have prior rights.

:04:19. > :04:21.Do you have advised by them? This period of time, how long should it

:04:22. > :04:24.be? It is difficult to know because we

:04:25. > :04:28.do not know the back story, and it maybe they are in negotiations to

:04:29. > :04:33.differentiate themselves from the Ritz in London, although I would not

:04:34. > :04:37.have got that would be to do. They have obviously taken that choice and

:04:38. > :04:41.they are perhaps doing some negotiations with the Ritz in

:04:42. > :04:44.London. It seems ridiculous. Surely the Ritz

:04:45. > :04:49.in London is big enough to realise that there are hotels and other

:04:50. > :04:53.things named the Ritz all over the place.

:04:54. > :04:59.Ritz has been a popular name for venues and dance venues, and there

:05:00. > :05:03.is one in Manchester. The Ritz in London on the recently dead their

:05:04. > :05:07.trademark so I do not not understand. -- they recently updated

:05:08. > :05:11.their trademark. That bank made a nice joke about the

:05:12. > :05:18.Savoy cabbage but they are asking for compensation from the Ritz in

:05:19. > :05:24.London. -- that band. It is a funny letter and I agree

:05:25. > :05:28.that it has interfered with their performances.

:05:29. > :05:32.There are rumours that Brighouse Ritz will reopen soon, so can they

:05:33. > :05:37.recover from this? Has been a setback or quite good for them?

:05:38. > :05:41.No publicity is bad publicity, and that's what I would say. I hope they

:05:42. > :05:44.do reopen because I would like to see venues like this continue and it

:05:45. > :05:45.would be a shame if they were pushed out by the big boys.

:05:46. > :05:47.Thank you. Next tonight, the family

:05:48. > :05:49.of a North Yorkshire man killed in a hit-and-run crash ten years ago

:05:50. > :05:52.is appealing for help 75-year-old Bill Hendry was knocked

:05:53. > :05:55.down while walking his The person responsible still hasn't

:05:56. > :06:00.come forward and hasn't been found. They could never have imagined

:06:01. > :06:07.they would still be trying to get justice ten years on,

:06:08. > :06:10.but today the family of Bill Hendry returned to the spot

:06:11. > :06:13.where he was knocked down and killed The driver did not stop

:06:14. > :06:22.and left in the road. We are not seeking revenge

:06:23. > :06:27.or anything like that, we just want a bit of justice,

:06:28. > :06:31.and somebody do have the courage to either say, I know who's done it,

:06:32. > :06:36.or the person who's done it. I have lived in Knaresborough

:06:37. > :06:38.since 1968, and I walk around knowing that

:06:39. > :06:41.somebody has done it. Bill's beloved dog Abby ran home

:06:42. > :06:49.after he was hit and was found waiting on the doorstep

:06:50. > :06:51.of their house. Bill died in hospital

:06:52. > :06:55.a short time later. Can I just give you one

:06:56. > :06:57.of these, please? Police admit there are no new lines

:06:58. > :07:04.of investigation, so this morning officers were stopping motorists

:07:05. > :07:08.to try to get fresh information. Bill Hendry had just

:07:09. > :07:11.been to the post office. He was crossing Stockwell Lane here

:07:12. > :07:16.with his dog Abby when he was hit. Now, it was just after

:07:17. > :07:18.9:30am in the morning. But, although people nearby

:07:19. > :07:23.told police they heard the collision, no one saw

:07:24. > :07:27.the vehicle involved. Does the family have

:07:28. > :07:29.confidence that you will get If they hadn't had the courage then,

:07:30. > :07:39.will they have the courage now? knows who's done it

:07:40. > :07:48.to do the decent thing. Police say the person

:07:49. > :07:51.who hit Bill Hendry was driving a car or small van,

:07:52. > :07:55.and was travelling at speed. They will have known exactly

:07:56. > :07:58.what happened and the vehicle Detectives believe this

:07:59. > :08:03.is their last chance to catch them. Emma Glasbey,

:08:04. > :08:10.BBC Look North, Knaresborough. I wish the family all the best with

:08:11. > :08:15.that latest campaign. Still on the way before 7.00:

:08:16. > :08:17.Remembering the King of Clubs. We'll meet the author of a new book,

:08:18. > :08:21.which celebrates the man who brought There are warnings that hill farmers

:08:22. > :08:28.in Yorkshire are facing tough times Some farmers say the financial

:08:29. > :08:33.uncertainty of the industry has been made worse with Brexit

:08:34. > :08:37.and the future of EU agricultural For tonight's Inside Out,

:08:38. > :08:42.Paul Hudson's been to meet a farmer The Yorkshire Dales,

:08:43. > :08:47.a land of breathtaking beauty, If you had to eke out

:08:48. > :08:53.a living from this terrain, you may take a less romantic view

:08:54. > :08:58.of its charms. To add to his income

:08:59. > :09:11.as a sheep farmer, The hours are long and the work

:09:12. > :09:16.is hard but the economics of the business has

:09:17. > :09:18.never been tougher. It is very dependent on the food

:09:19. > :09:21.policy that needs to be developed by our Government for post-Brexit

:09:22. > :09:24.times, because if they do go down the road of cutting subsidies

:09:25. > :09:30.to farmers across the country, that drives farmers to food

:09:31. > :09:32.production on a mass Then we will lose the environmental

:09:33. > :09:40.benefits that have been created over the last 40 years through subsidies

:09:41. > :09:43.and we will lose their cheap food, because people will

:09:44. > :09:48.go out of business. Gary and his wife have had to look

:09:49. > :09:51.at ways of making the land pay They hope this field will be open

:09:52. > :09:55.as a campsite this year. The need for an

:09:56. > :09:58.alternative was huge. We have two children,

:09:59. > :10:00.one that we are trying It was a necessity because we were

:10:01. > :10:05.looking at such a dramatic On top of running a farm full-time

:10:06. > :10:13.and Gillian working as a nurse, they are having to ponder pricing,

:10:14. > :10:17.promotion and how to operate at Farmers are not alone in facing

:10:18. > :10:23.post-Brexit uncertainty but without EU subsidies to make

:10:24. > :10:27.food production viable, there Farming in the Dales

:10:28. > :10:32.is not just a business, And you can see Paul's

:10:33. > :10:37.report on Inside Out Tributes are being paid

:10:38. > :10:43.to the Leeds-born MP Sir Gerald Kaufman, who's died

:10:44. > :10:46.at the age of 86 He was educated at Leeds Grammar

:10:47. > :10:51.School and worked as a journalist, before he was elected

:10:52. > :10:54.to parliament in 1970. He became Britain's

:10:55. > :10:58.longest-serving Labour MP. Jeremy Corbyn said he was

:10:59. > :11:00.an "iconic and irascible figure" within the party, while Tony Blair

:11:01. > :11:02.described him as passionate Two further arrests have

:11:03. > :11:10.been made after a man 23-year-old Aseel Al-Essaie

:11:11. > :11:16.was attacked in the Upperthorpe area Two people were arrested earlier

:11:17. > :11:21.today after armed police stopped Five people who were previously

:11:22. > :11:25.arrested in connection with the murder investigation have

:11:26. > :11:29.been released on bail. The first-ever Leeds International

:11:30. > :11:32.Festival has been launched today. The eight-day event will see stars

:11:33. > :11:37.from film, fashion and music putting on shows in the city in the last

:11:38. > :11:40.week of April. Highlights will include

:11:41. > :11:42.one of music's hottest stars of the moment,

:11:43. > :11:45.Rag'N'Bone Man, as part An international festival can really

:11:46. > :11:51.put a place on the map, and what we are doing,

:11:52. > :11:53.we have brought together people from the music,

:11:54. > :11:56.people from the moving image, and people from tech,

:11:57. > :11:59.to really collaborate and really put a great festival on for the city

:12:00. > :12:01.that really showcases Independent traders in Rotherham

:12:02. > :12:12.are warning of consequences if a town centre branch of Tesco's

:12:13. > :12:15.starts charging for parking. The store wants people who shop

:12:16. > :12:18.with them to pay at least ?5 to qualify for a stay

:12:19. > :12:22.in their car park. Stallholders at the market next door

:12:23. > :12:24.say the change in policy could drive shoppers away

:12:25. > :12:26.from Rotherham altogether. A brisk Monday morning's trade

:12:27. > :12:32.at Tesco Extra in Rotherham. If the store get their way,

:12:33. > :12:35.in future, you will have to shop But it takes more than one shop

:12:36. > :12:45.to make a high street, and news of the proposed charges has

:12:46. > :12:48.not gone down well amongst traders and shoppers

:12:49. > :12:53.and the market next door. According to a lot of customers that

:12:54. > :12:56.have been, they have been telling us that once they put charges

:12:57. > :12:59.on they are not coming We're going to have to look

:13:00. > :13:03.for somewhere else, but we have got a disabled child in a wheelchair

:13:04. > :13:05.as well, so that's ideal I do shopping in there, but I know

:13:06. > :13:10.there's quite a people that say Small traders feed off the footfall

:13:11. > :13:14.and towns like Rotherham That's what brings

:13:15. > :13:17.the diversity to the town. They are not all led by the hook

:13:18. > :13:25.in the nose by Tesco. Retail consultant Mary Portas

:13:26. > :13:31.was part of a coalition Government project to revitalise

:13:32. > :13:34.Rotherham's shopping offer. The town has won plaudits

:13:35. > :13:37.for its unique mix of Tesco have asked the council

:13:38. > :13:42.for a change to their planning consent, which will in turn allow

:13:43. > :13:46.them to introduce parking charges. Tesco have told us in a statement

:13:47. > :13:50.that they are planning to make these changes as a direct result

:13:51. > :13:52.of customer demand, and pressure The council say any decision

:13:53. > :13:58.on changes to the planning consent can only take place after a period

:13:59. > :14:02.of public consultation, which will They've warned Tesco

:14:03. > :14:06.that if they make any changes before then,

:14:07. > :14:08.they will be in breach The store have removed signs saying

:14:09. > :14:24.that charges weren't due to be -- the Saints had said that the

:14:25. > :14:27.charges were in place but they have been removed.

:14:28. > :14:28.Tanya's here with the weekend's sport,

:14:29. > :14:31.starting with a bit of a punch-up at the rugby league.

:14:32. > :14:33.The RFL says it's looking into what happened during

:14:34. > :14:35.a Challenge Cup match on Saturday between Fryston Warriors

:14:36. > :14:39.Footage has emerged on social media which appears to show a Keighley

:14:40. > :14:41.player being surrounded and attacked on the touchline by

:14:42. > :14:45.several Fryston players - you can see punches being thrown.

:14:46. > :14:47.Keighley have released a statement, saying their player Emmerson Whittle

:14:48. > :14:50.sustained a broken jaw and Josh Lynam had his ear

:14:51. > :14:56.Whittle says it'll be six to eight weeks before

:14:57. > :15:01.Fryston though say this has been blown out of proportion,

:15:02. > :15:04.and one of their players suffered a broken jaw as well.

:15:05. > :15:09.For the record, Keighley won the match by 50-32.

:15:10. > :15:11.Rugby League's new transatlantic side, the Toronto Wolfpack,

:15:12. > :15:17.The Wolfpack beat West Yorkshire amateur side Siddal 14-6

:15:18. > :15:21.in the third round of the Challenge Cup.

:15:22. > :15:23.The victory was thanks to tries by Ryan Burroughs,

:15:24. > :15:27.Greg Worthington and this score by Adam Sidlow.

:15:28. > :15:30.The draw for the fourth round is on the website

:15:31. > :15:33.And you can see all the weekend's Super League action tonight

:15:34. > :15:43.after Match of the Day two at 11.30 here on BBC One.

:15:44. > :15:46.Leeds United head coach Garry Monk says his team deserved a 1-0 victory

:15:47. > :15:49.against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, despite their opponents

:15:50. > :15:52.missing a penalty which would have levelled the score.

:15:53. > :15:56.Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal says he's to blame for the defeat,

:15:57. > :16:03.Two clubs locked together on 58 points -

:16:04. > :16:07.two sets of fans hoping they will be applauding promotion in May.

:16:08. > :16:11.Leeds struck early as Vincent Sasso seemed to duck under the ball.

:16:12. > :16:17.Chris Wood left him acres of space and the finish was simple.

:16:18. > :16:19.Then it was a story of two penalty appeals.

:16:20. > :16:24.Nothing given for this, but Souleymane Doukara's push on

:16:25. > :16:28.Jordan Rhodes found his route to the goal blocked, though,

:16:29. > :16:31.and it's Leeds who march on to fourth in the table.

:16:32. > :16:34.You can see clearly today how committed the players

:16:35. > :16:36.are to delivering a performance that our fans can enjoy,

:16:37. > :16:40.We were the most creative team on the pitch, and I think, overall,

:16:41. > :16:42.the way we defended and the way we attacked,

:16:43. > :16:46.In the day's other Yorkshire derby, Michael Hefele headed Huddersfield

:16:47. > :16:50.Marley Watkins equalised on the volley.

:16:51. > :16:53.Perhaps keeper Danny Ward would have done better.

:16:54. > :16:55.Town pushed forward, but some brilliant Barnsley defending

:16:56. > :17:01.Sheffield United extended their lead at the top of League 1,

:17:02. > :17:06.Mark Beevers' defending needed more teeth as he let the ball slipped

:17:07. > :17:13.And when David Wheater had a nibble at Carruthers,

:17:14. > :17:17.up stepped Sharp again to blunt Bolton's resistance.

:17:18. > :17:24.Bradford delivered after beating Port Vale 2-1.

:17:25. > :17:28.The opener was headed by Romain Vancelot,

:17:29. > :17:30.and Alex Jones, who played for Port Vale until January,

:17:31. > :17:33.came back to haunt his old crowd with the winner.

:17:34. > :17:35.And in League 2 Doncaster took on Accrington Stanley.

:17:36. > :17:38.Well, they are fighting relegation but they left

:17:39. > :17:41.Tommy Rowe and John Marquis got the home side's goals.

:17:42. > :17:43.Rovers still three points clear at the top.

:17:44. > :17:48.Elsewhere, Rotherham and Chesterfield both lost and find

:17:49. > :17:50.themselves well adrift in the relegation zone.

:17:51. > :17:53.Meanwhile Huddersfield head coach David Wagner has been given

:17:54. > :17:55.a two-match touchline ban after an altercation with Leeds boss

:17:56. > :18:05.Monk has been banned for one game, and both clubs have been fined.

:18:06. > :18:08.In boxing, it wasn't to be for Doncaster's Gavin McDonnell,

:18:09. > :18:10.who lost his world title chance on a points decision

:18:11. > :18:16.He gave a good showing but lost out on the WBC belt to Mexican

:18:17. > :18:21.McDonnell had hoped to emulate his twin brother Jamie,

:18:22. > :18:26.He battled over 12 rounds, but lost in what was only his 19th

:18:27. > :18:32.He was just slightly better in just about every department,

:18:33. > :18:38.He wouldn't let me pin him, and when I did pin him,

:18:39. > :18:42.But, at the end of the day, I did everything I could.

:18:43. > :18:46.I put it all in there, and I know I got beaten,

:18:47. > :18:50.and I am disappointed by that, but I can hold my head high.

:18:51. > :19:00.Yorkshire triple Olympic rowing champion Andrew Triggs-Hodge has

:19:01. > :19:04.The 37-year-old from Hebden was part of the Great Britain crews that won

:19:05. > :19:06.gold in the coxless fours at the Beijing and London Olympics,

:19:07. > :19:09.before helping the men's eight to victory in Rio last summer.

:19:10. > :19:20.Triggs-Hodge also won one European and four world titles.

:19:21. > :19:24.He has done very well. Thank you.

:19:25. > :19:27.It's nearly 50 years since James and Betty Corrigan brought the world

:19:28. > :19:31.At one time the Batley Variety Club was the biggest nightclub

:19:32. > :19:35.The venue only closed down last year, but in its heyday it attracted

:19:36. > :19:38.huge names like Eartha Kitt, Louis Armstrong and Dame Shirley

:19:39. > :19:44.Bassey, and it put the town well and truly on the map.

:19:45. > :19:46.Maureen Prest worked at the Varieties, and has also

:19:47. > :19:49.written a book called The King Of Clubs about James' role
