:00:07. > :00:08.Good evening - you're watching Thursday's Look North.
:00:09. > :00:10.Thousands more shoppers in Leeds -
:00:11. > :00:13.but business isn't booming for all stores in the city's
:00:14. > :00:23.Can exercise benefit our mental health?
:00:24. > :00:25.We'll meet the West Yorkshire runner taking on a marathon challenge,
:00:26. > :00:30.Harrogate flower show gets under way, with visitors asked
:00:31. > :00:52.Joined me for the latest weather forecast.
:00:53. > :00:57.It's six months since Leeds' new shopping centre,
:00:58. > :00:59.Victoria Gate, opened - bringing thousands more shoppers
:01:00. > :01:04.But though footfall has increased by 3%, there are signs that trade
:01:05. > :01:06.for some shops has not been as brisk as hoped.
:01:07. > :01:08.The centre was dubbed the Knightsbridge of the North
:01:09. > :01:12.But with rising inflation and political uncertainty,
:01:13. > :01:16.the retail sector as a whole is facing a difficult time.
:01:17. > :01:18.Our business correspondent, Danni Hewson, joins us
:01:19. > :01:36.Last month the centre was named to the number one centre in the world.
:01:37. > :01:41.The arrival of Victoria Gate has helped propel us up the retail
:01:42. > :01:47.ranking, leapfrogging Manchester and Birmingham to make as number three
:01:48. > :01:51.in the country behind on the Leeds and Glasgow. Lots of new names
:01:52. > :01:56.coming here but it is not all good news. We can only spend a pound once
:01:57. > :02:01.and post-Christmas the inflationary pressures are certainly affecting
:02:02. > :02:07.some of the shops here. Thursday morning and things are
:02:08. > :02:10.pretty quiet. But Victoria Gate has always been about quality not
:02:11. > :02:15.quantity and management insist they are happy with fruitful. We are
:02:16. > :02:20.comfortable with the customer numbers we are experiencing,
:02:21. > :02:24.particularly with higher spend and more volume. That is to be expected
:02:25. > :02:29.given the mix of retail that we have. Probe also more and it's clear
:02:30. > :02:34.not all shops are making the kind of profits they would like. Even high
:02:35. > :02:38.and retailers are facing High Street problems. We have changed the way
:02:39. > :02:43.that the shop sold 95% of us no shop online, that is one way of
:02:44. > :02:47.controlling your finances. What is challenging us, how do people get
:02:48. > :02:51.back in here and start spending money at a time as we go into a
:02:52. > :02:57.period of general election when we are focused on the concerns the
:02:58. > :03:00.economy? There's not much retailers can do
:03:01. > :03:04.about the cash in your ward but shoppers can be tempted from the
:03:05. > :03:15.coaches with bars and restaurants. Riders are some of the rooftops of
:03:16. > :03:19.Victoria Gate will be home to a Japanese restaurant and a New York
:03:20. > :03:24.bar. I do not know anybody who sits and 87 meals at home. Most of my
:03:25. > :03:30.friends and people I work with are out once or twice a week and Leeds
:03:31. > :03:34.gives them that flexibility of what they would choose to eat at all
:03:35. > :03:39.different price points as well. As for online shopping most brands have
:03:40. > :03:44.a digital presence. Shops have become primarily a window to be
:03:45. > :03:47.dressed to impress. Bricks and mortar retailers, the key
:03:48. > :03:50.focus they have got to look at is making sure that customers get
:03:51. > :03:54.something extra when they come into the store. You cannot just have
:03:55. > :03:57.transactional retail anymore predators picked this and pop it
:03:58. > :04:01.through the till. Every sector from luxury to High Street D2 focus on
:04:02. > :04:04.what they are doing installed to make that customer connect with the
:04:05. > :04:10.brand and make them keep wanting to come back to the High Street. New
:04:11. > :04:14.names, saying challenges. It is not just new names that are
:04:15. > :04:17.struggling. We have heard the news from high-street department store
:04:18. > :04:23.Debenhams today that they are looking to cause about ten of their
:04:24. > :04:26.stores, and some of the warehouses and distribution centres. They have
:04:27. > :04:31.not said precisely where but they say they want to focus, as Victoria
:04:32. > :04:35.Gate is doing, on experience went shopping. It is all about tempting
:04:36. > :04:40.people of their sofas onto the High Street. Come and have a drink, spend
:04:41. > :04:45.your money, and experience as well as shop.
:04:46. > :04:47.Police investigating the mysterious disappearance of a woman
:04:48. > :04:49.who lived in Micklefield, East of Leeds, have been carrying
:04:50. > :04:53.40-year-old Svitlana Krasnoselska, known
:04:54. > :04:57.to her friends as Lana, has not been seen for two and a half
:04:58. > :04:59.weeks and detectives say they're extremely worried about her as it's
:05:00. > :05:02.totally out of character for her to go missing.
:05:03. > :05:05.Police officers were back in Micklefield this
:05:06. > :05:12.They were searching a half mile radius
:05:13. > :05:15.around her home checking bushes, shrubs and water.
:05:16. > :05:16.The 40-year-old Ukrainian has not been seen since
:05:17. > :05:21.5.30 in the morning on Monday April the 3rd.
:05:22. > :05:25.She is known to have links to York and the Halton area of Leeds.
:05:26. > :05:26.Police hope someone somewhere knows where
:05:27. > :05:31.She leaves behind a husband and a daughter
:05:32. > :05:34.and they have no idea of
:05:35. > :05:39.where she may have gone and why she might have gone.
:05:40. > :05:51.It is all this that really raises our concern about where
:05:52. > :05:55.We deal with missing people on a daily
:05:56. > :06:04.And there is always something to go on.
:06:05. > :06:08.It is completely out of character for Lana.
:06:09. > :06:11.We just do not know where she has gone to.
:06:12. > :06:13.Detectives are working to build a picture of Lana's life style
:06:14. > :06:15.across Yorkshire and the people she knew.
:06:16. > :06:17.She's been in this country about 12 years.
:06:18. > :06:19.I would appeal to any Ukrainian communities within
:06:20. > :06:21.Leeds or even further afield that may know Lana,
:06:22. > :06:24.that may know anywhere that she might go to, to give us a
:06:25. > :06:26.ring, just speak to us, just give us any bit
:06:27. > :06:28.of information that might
:06:29. > :06:31.Despite extensive searches the police remain baffled by this
:06:32. > :06:35.Detectives say it is as though Lana has disappeared off the face of
:06:36. > :06:37.Her bank accounts have not been touched.
:06:38. > :06:40.There's no sign yet of foul play but what happened to
:06:41. > :06:43.Later on Look North: Keeping Yorkshire talent in the north.

:06:47. > :06:48.The leader of Leeds City Council is calling for clarity
:06:49. > :06:52.from the Government over the future of transport funding.
:06:53. > :07:00.The city was promised ?170 million
:07:01. > :07:03.following the cancellation of the Trolleybus scheme.
:07:04. > :07:05.This week's announcement of a general election
:07:06. > :07:06.has potentially called that into question.
:07:07. > :07:18.Phil - Leeds is desperately in need of a solution to its travel chaos?
:07:19. > :07:23.Yes, and people of Leeds could be forgiven for thinking they have
:07:24. > :07:28.heard this before. We have been talking about a solution to the
:07:29. > :07:32.traffic problem for 30 years. At the turn-of-the-century edit that things
:07:33. > :07:40.were on track with a super tram scheme and then potentially
:07:41. > :07:43.Trolleybus. I know we're on the brink of more uncertainty.
:07:44. > :07:47.Sheffield, Newcastle, Manchester and Liverpool.
:07:48. > :07:59.Then there's Leeds, the largest city in Europe without one.

:08:46. > :08:48.We are waiting for the Treasury to sign off the final
:08:49. > :08:55.And the general election came from nowhere for all of us so
:08:56. > :08:58.we've been asking everyone to have conversations with the Department
:08:59. > :09:03.for Transport to see if we could get the letter to us before the weekend.
:09:04. > :09:06.But we're just waiting to have a response back to see

:09:34. > :09:43.The Department for Transport told us ?173.5 million is being retained
:09:44. > :09:49.But when asked if that money was being ring fenced

:14:50. > :14:57.Let's hear a bit about of the programme.
:14:58. > :15:03.It is estimated one in four adults will need professional help for
:15:04. > :15:07.mental health problems at some stage in their life. Chances are we all
:15:08. > :15:13.know someone who is suffering. I don't want sympathy or empathy. Just
:15:14. > :15:16.a bit of understanding. That is all. No, ten volunteers have agreed to
:15:17. > :15:24.try something different, a running programme. Exercise can help with
:15:25. > :15:28.mental health issues. Most definitely. From personal
:15:29. > :15:32.experience. Talking about mental health issues on national TV, and
:15:33. > :15:38.running a marathon, two massive challenges. What did you decide to
:15:39. > :15:42.take part? One of my friends was a producer on the programme and he put
:15:43. > :15:50.something about it on social media. Running and mental health are two
:15:51. > :15:54.things that, running has been a part of my recovery from mental health
:15:55. > :15:58.conditions, know I am in a state where I am happy with my mental
:15:59. > :16:03.health, it felt like time to give back, and the next thing I was at
:16:04. > :16:07.the boot camp and starting the training. It's all kind of spoils.
:16:08. > :16:12.It is marvellous the entire process. One in four people suffers from
:16:13. > :16:19.mental health issues. How did you know you had depression? If you look
:16:20. > :16:22.back to my childhood there were certain moments where I felt
:16:23. > :16:28.different or did not quite connect with others, as I saw other people
:16:29. > :16:36.doing. Daydreaming at school, all those kind of things. Following on
:16:37. > :16:44.from my dad was like I had a breakdown about three years ago. --
:16:45. > :16:51.following on from the death of my father. At the time it was scary. I
:16:52. > :16:54.did not know what was going on. I did not have a BBC programme with
:16:55. > :17:00.young people taking part two I could relate to. These conversations were
:17:01. > :17:05.not happening at the time. I had to find my own way. It has taken a
:17:06. > :17:10.while and I have tried failures different things. Ultimately it has
:17:11. > :17:17.been the most rewarding experience of my life. I wonder by running? How
:17:18. > :17:24.is it helping you? I was running before I came into the programme. I
:17:25. > :17:31.was a step ahead. Sharing the experiences with ten other people.
:17:32. > :17:35.We have got this common thread of mental health. We all came to the
:17:36. > :17:39.first boot camp. We instantly were able to connect with each other and
:17:40. > :17:47.support each other. And you met with royalty. Yes. How was that? That was
:17:48. > :17:51.a crazy day. We met with him a couple of times. They came down to
:17:52. > :17:55.St Mary 's University in London. They did some training with us. Then
:17:56. > :18:00.we broke up and had chats, we had a couple of the boys with the
:18:01. > :18:04.programme, we sat down with Harry, he shares his experiences. It was
:18:05. > :18:08.amazed to see how engaged they are the subject. They have all got
:18:09. > :18:11.personal experiences. We have seen a lot of that in the press recently.
:18:12. > :18:16.You could tell they were genuinely affected by it and they wanted to
:18:17. > :18:18.help our cause. Quickly, what will your time be? Hopefully under four
:18:19. > :18:20.hours. That is a cracking time. And Mind over Marathon is on BBC One
:18:21. > :18:23.tonight at nine o'clock. Thousands of people have been
:18:24. > :18:25.heading to North Yorkshire for the first day of

:18:31. > :18:35.you fancy, chances are Cathy Killick is there
:18:36. > :18:50.for us tonight. Look who has just arrived? All part
:18:51. > :18:55.of the magic. It has been a busy first day of the show. The
:18:56. > :18:59.stallholders are busy restocking their stance because this is one of
:19:00. > :19:02.the busiest selling shows in Yorkshire. If few arrived early
:19:03. > :19:07.enough you did get something for free, a flower to wear for the day.
:19:08. > :19:15.More on that the moment, but first here are some of the highlights of
:19:16. > :19:22.show. There is only one phrase for it.
:19:23. > :19:29.Blooming marvellous. The havoc it Spring flower show has a gorgeous
:19:30. > :19:34.celebration of what is to come. Florals are in fashion. What about
:19:35. > :19:37.these leafy waistcoats? And these amazing floral costumes all the way
:19:38. > :19:44.from New Zealand, especially for this show. Some of them take three
:19:45. > :19:52.months to me. I had to do this one and a hurry. This is meant to be the
:19:53. > :19:59.York rose. I was still working on it at four o'clock the night before we
:20:00. > :20:04.left. In the end, put it in the suitcase, and go. But edible what's
:20:05. > :20:07.months of work can achieve, but how about eight days? This was one of
:20:08. > :20:19.the show garden plots last week. Look at it now.
:20:20. > :20:34.# Some say love it as a river. It is to be a memorial garden. The
:20:35. > :20:40.military wives choir was on hand. Seeing it come to life has been
:20:41. > :20:43.fantastic. We will have two deconstruct and reconstructed in
:20:44. > :20:46.camp for the soldiers and their families for years to come. It has
:20:47. > :20:55.been a great collaborative effort and I am pleased with the result.
:20:56. > :21:05.It's one gold and Best in show. It is remarkable what you can do with
:21:06. > :21:08.plants. The floral street displays are inspiring. Thousands have
:21:09. > :21:18.enjoyed them today and will until the show closes on Sunday.
:21:19. > :21:21.If you thought having small children meant your clubbing days were over,

:21:34. > :21:41.He's made a name for himself with his parenting blog.
