:00:00. > 3:59:59Tonight the verdict on the Prime Minister's exit Strang. Join me now
:00:00. > :00:00.on BBC Two. Good evening and welcome
:00:00. > :00:07.to the late Look North. Tonight: Yorkshire Bank announces
:00:08. > :00:09.its biggest closure plan ever - with 18 branches due to
:00:10. > :00:11.shut in our region. Yorkshire is a hot spot
:00:12. > :00:14.for dog fighting in the UK, the illegal practice
:00:15. > :00:28.leaves its victims horribly maimed. The quiet and cloudy conditions look
:00:29. > :00:32.set to continue but of hope through the weekend. Join me live for the
:00:33. > :00:34.updated forecast. A glimmer of hope. Yorkshire Bank has announced
:00:35. > :00:38.its biggest closure plan ever - which will see the number
:00:39. > :00:40.of branches reduced by a third. The company says it's in response
:00:41. > :00:43.to a rise in online banking. 18 of the branches
:00:44. > :00:48.are in our region. It means that a total
:00:49. > :00:53.of 200 jobs are at risk. Our business correspondent
:00:54. > :00:54.Danni Hewson joins us live from the former
:00:55. > :01:04.headquarters in Leeds. As you say this is the biggest
:01:05. > :01:09.branch closure plan the bank has ever carried out and will seek the
:01:10. > :01:15.number of branches cut by one third, taking them to under 100. It is the
:01:16. > :01:23.latest in a series of changes for the bank first established in
:01:24. > :01:27.Halifax in 1859. Two years ago it demerged from their parent company
:01:28. > :01:30.when a buyer could not be found the Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank group
:01:31. > :01:35.was floated on the stock market and just last year a smaller series of
:01:36. > :01:40.branch closures was implemented. Bring us up to date. What is the
:01:41. > :01:45.reason behind it? It is down to the fact more of us are doing internet
:01:46. > :01:49.banking and in a statement tonight Yorkshire Bank said the changes will
:01:50. > :01:54.help customers to interact with them whenever and however they want. Many
:01:55. > :02:03.other banks have done some of restructuring but that is of no
:02:04. > :02:05.comfort to the 200 staff now faced with redundancy and Unite said not
:02:06. > :02:07.all customers want digital. There is a significant proportion
:02:08. > :02:10.of society who do not want internet banking, do not want to do banking
:02:11. > :02:13.on the telephone and who actually need and value face-to-face customer
:02:14. > :02:15.service and we believe the industry, an industry that, let's not forget,
:02:16. > :02:18.was bailed out by the British taxpayer to the tune of tens
:02:19. > :02:21.of billions of pounds less than a decade ago, has a responsibility to
:02:22. > :02:40.ensure people have retail banking in What will it mean to the customers?
:02:41. > :02:44.It will leave some places without a bag altogether, the particular issue
:02:45. > :02:50.for rural areas and in some cases it is 20 miles to the needed branch.
:02:51. > :02:54.The closures are right across the region and all will be gone by the
:02:55. > :02:59.end of the year. The bank says customers will be given 12 weeks
:03:00. > :03:00.notice of branch closures and they will help them find alternate ways
:03:01. > :03:03.of managing their money. Next tonight - it's a barbaric
:03:04. > :03:06.and illegal sport which leaves its victims horrifically injured,
:03:07. > :03:08.but according to the RSCPA dog fighting is still
:03:09. > :03:11.rife here in Yorkshire. Rescue centres say the dogs'
:03:12. > :03:14.injuries are heartbreaking - some have been used in fights,
:03:15. > :03:17.others have been stolen Human entertainment
:03:18. > :03:29.at the expense of animals. The underground world of dog
:03:30. > :03:31.fighting is vicious and bloody, but believe it or not scenes
:03:32. > :03:34.like these are heartbreakingly Meet Brian, a dog lover who knows
:03:35. > :03:41.all too well the devastating effects He has actually got injuries,
:03:42. > :03:49.as you can see, to his face, around his neck, this is the place
:03:50. > :03:52.where the dog had attacked another Benji is not aggressive
:03:53. > :03:58.and that is why he would have been used as bait, to test other dog's
:03:59. > :04:01.fighting instincts without being We have seen several cases over
:04:02. > :04:07.the years and with dogfighting quite often it is done by individuals that
:04:08. > :04:11.are fighting them It makes me very sad to think people
:04:12. > :04:20.can treat any dog bad, but a dog that is as beautiful
:04:21. > :04:26.in temperaments as Benji it just... You cannot believe
:04:27. > :04:30.a person would do that. In North Yorkshire the RSPCA
:04:31. > :04:39.received 77 calls about fights In South Yorkshire
:04:40. > :04:47.the figure is much higher, In west Yorkshire there were over
:04:48. > :04:51.300 calls in ten years. Both West and South Yorkshire
:04:52. > :04:53.are in the top five areas for the number of calls in the whole
:04:54. > :04:55.England. But it's not just dogs,
:04:56. > :04:58.it is thought these kittens found in Bradford last year were also
:04:59. > :05:00.used as bait. They are coloured in so people can
:05:01. > :05:03.bet on which one will die first. It was horrendous and
:05:04. > :05:05.it was thinking, like, those cats were probably minutes
:05:06. > :05:08.away from being ripped to shreds. Dogfights are illegal and you can
:05:09. > :05:13.get up to six months in jail for being involved in one,
:05:14. > :05:16.but the RSPCA says that is not enough to help animals
:05:17. > :05:19.like these from being harmed. Luckily, Smurf and Trek have
:05:20. > :05:30.now found a happy home. The Department for Rural Affairs say
:05:31. > :05:34.they share the public's regard for animal welfare,
:05:35. > :05:37.but at the moment this is a sport that's popularity is plain to see,
:05:38. > :05:39.its presence in Yorkshire's In other news, a murder
:05:40. > :05:49.investigation's underway in Halifax after a man died
:05:50. > :05:51.following an attack. He was found fatally injured
:05:52. > :05:53.at a house in Athol Close Two men, aged 33 and
:05:54. > :06:01.25, are in custody. A post-mortem examination has
:06:02. > :06:03.concluded that the teenager whose body was found in an alleyway
:06:04. > :06:06.in Dinnington on Monday died Leonne Weeks' family have
:06:07. > :06:09.released a statement saying they are devastated at the loss
:06:10. > :06:11.of a beautiful daughter and sister. An 18-year-old man has been arrested
:06:12. > :06:14.on suspicion of murder Pupils at Leonne's school have
:06:15. > :06:22.been getting special support. Leonne was a lovely,
:06:23. > :06:26.lively girl, some people who knew her knew the other side
:06:27. > :06:31.to her, that she had an effervescent one of the things that is probably
:06:32. > :06:36.most significant about her is she was a truly loyal friend and truly
:06:37. > :06:39.loyal to her family. A man from Wetherby has won
:06:40. > :06:48.a victory for disabled travellers Five years ago Doug Paulley couldn't
:06:49. > :06:53.get on a bus because a woman wouldn't move her pushchair out
:06:54. > :06:56.of the way of the wheelchair space. He took the fight all the way
:06:57. > :07:01.through the courts, and now bus drivers will have to do
:07:02. > :07:06.more to prevent people blocking The bus drivers union,
:07:07. > :07:09.Unite, has asked for more If Doug tomorrow gets on a bus
:07:10. > :07:13.and is refused access because the driver does not require
:07:14. > :07:18.someone to fold their buggy, then Doug is entitled to damages,
:07:19. > :07:22.and so is every other disabled service user trying
:07:23. > :07:24.to access that service. It is a matter for First
:07:25. > :07:28.whether they change that policy, or any other bus company
:07:29. > :07:30.across the country, but if they do not they find it
:07:31. > :07:34.will be a very expensive problem In North Yorkshire, firefighters
:07:35. > :07:37.have been sent home without pay because of a dispute over
:07:38. > :07:39.new style fire appliances. The vehicles are called TRVs
:07:40. > :07:42.and some firefighters in Scarborough This is the new tactical
:07:43. > :07:51.response vehicle now Scarborough is the first place
:07:52. > :07:56.in the country to have one and it is already
:07:57. > :08:02.at the centre of controversy. The Fire Brigade Union
:08:03. > :08:04.says it should be manned by four firefighters,
:08:05. > :08:06.North Yorkshire Fire Service said it only wants three
:08:07. > :08:08.firefighters crewing it. When union members refused to staff
:08:09. > :08:11.it on Monday bosses sent the men One of the firefighters who refused
:08:12. > :08:15.to crew this tactical response vehicle was actually the only
:08:16. > :08:17.firefighter on shift qualified to operate this
:08:18. > :08:18.aerial ladder platform. That meant this vehicle was then put
:08:19. > :08:22.out of action and the nearest aerial ladder platform was 25 minutes away
:08:23. > :08:24.and would have to come The union claims the new vehicles
:08:25. > :08:28.are not adequately staffed On Monday in Scarborough
:08:29. > :08:35.we had a situation created by the Chief Fire Officer
:08:36. > :08:39.which meant that people and the public of Scarborough
:08:40. > :08:42.were down to one fire engine and did not have any high-rise
:08:43. > :08:46.rescue capability when our members were at work prepared to ride them
:08:47. > :08:50.with sufficient numbers. We are at the point now
:08:51. > :08:53.where if staff are unwilling to ride them they are unfortunately
:08:54. > :08:56.in breach of contract and we will continue to send
:08:57. > :09:01.them home without pay If they refuse to ride
:09:02. > :09:08.in the tactical response vehicles then there is no other word
:09:09. > :09:12.for them to do. The other fire engine
:09:13. > :09:18.at Scarborough was fully crewed, so it is not like we have another
:09:19. > :09:21.response vehicle for them to crew, so until they are able to fulfil
:09:22. > :09:24.the contract that will continue The new vehicles and crewing
:09:25. > :09:27.arrangements are to be introduced Meanwhile, the dispute shows no
:09:28. > :09:33.sign of being resolved And now trying to catch up with the
:09:34. > :09:45.weather. Very grey And now trying to catch up with the
:09:46. > :09:51.weather. Very grey and very boring. There will be some brightness later
:09:52. > :09:55.on. Tomorrow is mostly dry and cloudy with high-pressure dominating
:09:56. > :10:00.our weather and subtle changes through the weekend. Hopefully we
:10:01. > :10:06.will see some breaks materialising late on Saturday and especially on
:10:07. > :10:11.Sunday. The main story is a lot of fine weather. Some drizzle showing
:10:12. > :10:19.up on the picture and some mess over the hills. But it is frost free will
:10:20. > :10:24.stop so for Thursday it is cloudy and a bit damp at first, otherwise
:10:25. > :10:30.in other dry and nondescript day with a lot of cloud and perhaps a
:10:31. > :10:37.bit of brightness. The light and variable breeze and top temperatures
:10:38. > :10:43.of eight Celsius. Thursday evening, and Thursday night, cloudy, mostly
:10:44. > :10:50.dry, some drizzle in places, light and variable breeze and frost free.
:10:51. > :10:55.Further ahead, Friday is again cloudy but mostly dry, so this
:10:56. > :11:00.Saturday but subtle changes in the wind direction might encourage some
:11:01. > :11:04.breaks. Early next week it is settled and eventually by the end of
:11:05. > :11:05.next week we get more wet and windy weather back.
:11:06. > :11:08.next few days, no great changes over the next few days, more sunshine on
:11:09. > :11:19.the way. Despite high-pressure sitting across
:11:20. > :11:23.the country so only slow changes in the weather, we have had a variety
:11:24. > :11:30.of different weathers, for example this beautiful sunset in Southampton
:11:31. > :11:34.which was shared by a Weather Watcher, but grey and misty in Derby
:11:35. > :11:37.thanks to an awful lot of cloud around and very little deviation by
:11:38. > :11:40.day or night from the rather grey routine.
:11:41. > :11:42.That is because we have a weather front, albeit very weak and very
:11:43. > :11:44.little
