:00:00. > :00:00.Good evening and welcome to the late Look North.

:00:00. > :00:00.Tonight, the shockingly easy trade in illegal drugs in Yorkshire -

:00:00. > :00:09.we go undercover to see how easy it is to buy laughing gas

:00:10. > :00:14.And the owner of Castle Howard tells us about his fears over fracking

:00:15. > :00:20.as protesters set up camp in Ryedale.

:00:21. > :00:23.The quiet weather looks set to continue over the next few days.

:00:24. > :00:33.I'll be back later with all the details.

:00:34. > :00:36.An undercover investigation by Look North has found that one

:00:37. > :00:39.of the country's most popular illegal drugs is available to buy

:00:40. > :00:46.Students at Leeds University say getting hold of nitrous oxide -

:00:47. > :00:49.known as laughing gas - is as easy as ordering a taxi.

:00:50. > :00:52.It's led to 17 deaths over a six year period and was made

:00:53. > :00:59.Ali Fortescue has this exclusive report.

:01:00. > :01:06.A dangerous and popular craze, inhaling nitrous oxide

:01:07. > :01:09.through balloons for a 20-second high, said by some to be as intense

:01:10. > :01:19.This is a drug more common here in the UK than anywhere else.

:01:20. > :01:23.We've set out to find out how dealers are illegally selling

:01:24. > :01:31.in Leeds and targeting young people on social media.

:01:32. > :01:50.Cool, do you think in about an hour would be all right?

:01:51. > :02:02.What interests me is that they said they were going to send one

:02:03. > :02:05.of their drivers to me so clearly they've got more than one driver,

:02:06. > :02:09.It'll be interesting to see if they actually turn up now.

:02:10. > :02:11.And here's what we're responding to - Facebook adverts plainly

:02:12. > :02:13.selling laughing gas and offering special deals.

:02:14. > :02:15.We arrange to meet the dealer in Woodhouse,

:02:16. > :02:21.Eventually a car pulls up with two men inside it.

:02:22. > :02:36.I've never actually done it before, what does it do?

:02:37. > :03:02.If we want some more later, mate, can we get some more?

:03:03. > :03:07.What amazes me most about this is just how easy it is to find.

:03:08. > :03:09.I mean, they have really gone to no effort to disguise

:03:10. > :03:14.All I have to do is type a couple of keywords into Google...

:03:15. > :03:17.And there you go, one click and I'm into their Facebook page and one

:03:18. > :03:20.phone call and I can order illegal drugs to my doorstep.

:03:21. > :03:22.So we found one site selling laughing gas but is it

:03:23. > :03:26.Well, according to Leeds University students, yes, it is.

:03:27. > :03:28.Every time you go out, if you go to a house

:03:29. > :03:33.It's a lot harder now to get it but definitely at house

:03:34. > :03:34.parties it's everywhere, after parties, everywhere.

:03:35. > :03:39.If I'm going to be honest, I see it on every street,

:03:40. > :03:45.on the pavements, in hedges, in gardens, you know.

:03:46. > :03:47.Laughing gas? Yeah, laughing gas.

:03:48. > :03:53.It's true that nitrous oxide isn't the most dangerous drug around.

:03:54. > :03:55.It's still used by dentists and by doctors to help women

:03:56. > :03:58.in labour and it's also the gas in whipped cream canisters.

:03:59. > :04:02.But in an uncontrolled environment it can kill.

:04:03. > :04:05.When you breathe in nitrous oxide, it's absorbed really quickly

:04:06. > :04:08.into the body and it goes straight to the brain and it can

:04:09. > :04:11.cause unconsciousness within 30 to 45 seconds.

:04:12. > :04:15.The unconscious human being is at risk and if there

:04:16. > :04:17.are not people around to support their airways,

:04:18. > :04:22.support their breathing, you can die as a result of unconsciousness.

:04:23. > :04:25.The risks are clear but illegal or not, this is a drug that's easy

:04:26. > :04:30.to find and a trend that doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

:04:31. > :04:41.And it was very easy for you to get hold of this but what has happened

:04:42. > :04:48.since filming? Since our investigation, police searched and

:04:49. > :04:53.address and found what was a huge amount of laughing gas, nearly 5000

:04:54. > :04:59.canisters and 7200 balloons and they arrested two men in their 20s and

:05:00. > :05:03.suspicion of possessing nitrous oxide with intent to supply. That

:05:04. > :05:08.Facebook page has also been taken down and Facebook are investigating.

:05:09. > :05:12.It's a hugely significant, these arrests, and it is the first time

:05:13. > :05:17.anyone and Leeds has been arrested under this new law and West

:05:18. > :05:24.Yorkshire police told us today that they have the dealing with his into

:05:25. > :05:28.place in May. We have dedicated police officers working closely with

:05:29. > :05:33.the University 's to try and disrupt anyone trying to get this supply to

:05:34. > :05:40.them. We're trying to educate people died to know what harm is coming to

:05:41. > :05:46.them by taking these things. This is still a very controversial law.

:05:47. > :05:48.People say the risks aren't as bad as many other drugs as you saw in my

:05:49. > :05:51.piece, when I asked if I could have piece, when I asked if I could have

:05:52. > :05:56.harder class a drugs, the dealer said yesterday tipped me with that

:05:57. > :05:57.and it is perfectly safe finding really concerning that this drug is

:05:58. > :06:00.leading people to harder drugs. The latest crime statistics

:06:01. > :06:01.have been released. They show North Yorkshire

:06:02. > :06:03.has the lowest levels Between September 2015 and 2016

:06:04. > :06:09.there were 96 recorded crimes That's a 22% increase -

:06:10. > :06:15.compared to an average 9% rise West Yorkshire Police say improved

:06:16. > :06:22.crime recording practises make their figures look

:06:23. > :06:25.disproportionally high, and that the real crime

:06:26. > :06:27.rise within the county A man has pleaded guilty

:06:28. > :06:34.to injuring a petrol station attendant in a hit-and-run

:06:35. > :06:36.incident in Barnsley. Scott Dearing drove

:06:37. > :06:38.into Michelle Carr as he tried She was bruised but

:06:39. > :06:42.not seriously hurt. Dearing will be

:06:43. > :06:46.sentenced next month. The owner of one of Yorkshire's

:06:47. > :06:49.largest tourist attractions has spoken exclusively to Look North

:06:50. > :06:52.saying he's worried about the negative impact fracking

:06:53. > :06:58.could have on tourism. Nicholas Howard from Castle Howard

:06:59. > :07:01.near Malton says it's taken a long time to change perceptions

:07:02. > :07:03.about the county and fears people could now think

:07:04. > :07:06.twice about visiting. Our business correspondent

:07:07. > :07:09.Danni Hewson reports. Very nice to meet you.

:07:10. > :07:15.We're actually from the Isle Of Man. Places like Castle Howard are

:07:16. > :07:19.the reason people come to Yorkshire. Last summer record numbers

:07:20. > :07:22.flocked to the region but here there is a growing concern

:07:23. > :07:25.that plans to frack for gas could have a detrimental impact

:07:26. > :07:29.on the tourist economy. There is the traffic movement,

:07:30. > :07:33.there is the water quality, there is the whole business

:07:34. > :07:36.of the air quality and the perceived effect, even if it's not as great

:07:37. > :07:39.as we expect it might be, While Ryedale is known as one

:07:40. > :07:45.of the most beautiful places in the country,

:07:46. > :07:47.people will flock to it, but if it's known as a place

:07:48. > :07:50.with endless with endless gas fields, that is hardly a choice

:07:51. > :07:52.for a holiday. At the moment, only one site

:07:53. > :07:55.in the region has planning permission to carry out

:07:56. > :07:57.the controversial drilling technique but it is thought shale gas

:07:58. > :08:01.is located under much of Yorkshire. The industry insists existing

:08:02. > :08:04.conventional gas sites have had little impact on tourism,

:08:05. > :08:07.and going forward disruption There has been a lot of protester

:08:08. > :08:13.activity and a lot of noise made around our industry but I think that

:08:14. > :08:16.gives us a responsibility to show to people that we can produce this

:08:17. > :08:20.in a sensitive way that doesn't have too much of an impact on local

:08:21. > :08:23.people and it is up to us At the moment much of the noise

:08:24. > :08:30.referred to is coming This one is directly on the route

:08:31. > :08:34.of this year's Tour de Yorkshire. But protesters say they wouldn't be

:08:35. > :08:38.here if the industry wasn't. For the organisation responsible

:08:39. > :08:41.for selling the region's image, Every day, regionally,

:08:42. > :08:48.nationally, internationally, we face major challenges,

:08:49. > :08:51.but Welcome To Yorkshire, we are the brand guardians

:08:52. > :08:55.for the Yorkshire brand and we will work hard or even harder

:08:56. > :08:58.to make sure that that Tourism has always been a massive

:08:59. > :09:04.part of Yorkshire's economy but since the Tour de France,

:09:05. > :09:07.things have really picked up and no one wants to see

:09:08. > :09:23.that progress back-pedal. Earlier on Paul Davies a detailed

:09:24. > :09:32.weather forecast for Barnsley sites were one for the rest of Yorkshire.

:09:33. > :09:38.A lot of cloud for the next few days but it will be mostly dry and some

:09:39. > :09:44.parts of Yorkshire will brighten up through tomorrow afternoon. Annesley

:09:45. > :09:48.is one of the places that mate later on. High pressure dominates and a

:09:49. > :09:51.lot of settled weather to come but this weather front which is very

:09:52. > :09:55.weak is underneath the high producing a lot of cloud and a

:09:56. > :10:00.little dampness but high-pressure visit to continue to dominate the

:10:01. > :10:05.weather through much of next week. Things will cool down over the

:10:06. > :10:10.weekend so the increased risk of frost at frost free tonight because

:10:11. > :10:15.of the cloud using a little drizzle and hill fog and maybe some fog and

:10:16. > :10:22.mist of rule lying areas and temperatures dropping back to around

:10:23. > :10:25.four or 5 degrees. Tomorrow a great start to the day and a lot of cloud

:10:26. > :10:30.with a little bit of dampness through the morning from the week

:10:31. > :10:33.front but a slight improvement through the day across parts of

:10:34. > :10:38.South Yorkshire where some sunshine could spread up and some broken

:10:39. > :10:42.cloud across South Yorkshire through the afternoon and the rest will have

:10:43. > :10:48.to wait until the evening to see the cloud breaks with temperatures

:10:49. > :10:51.getting up to around 7 degrees. Enter Saturday there will be some

:10:52. > :10:57.bricks and the cloud allowing Apache mist and fog and some patchy frost

:10:58. > :10:58.and starting off a defender at the cloud thickening from the east and

:10:59. > :11:04.for Sunday. looks as though we can, a bit more

:11:05. > :11:05.cloud on Sunday. Now the national
