:00:09. > :00:10.Good evening and welcome to the late Look North.

:00:11. > :00:12.Tonight - Hundreds of former coking plant workers

:00:13. > :00:15.and their relatives sue British Steel, claiming they were

:00:16. > :00:17.Returning to the era of new council houses.

:00:18. > :00:19.The first in 30 years are built in Sheffield,

:00:20. > :00:30.The weather is set to get colder over the next few days. I will be

:00:31. > :00:37.back later with the details. A High Court action is to be taken

:00:38. > :00:42.by lawyers on behalf of hundreds of former steel workers

:00:43. > :00:44.including more than It's claimed their job exposed them

:00:45. > :00:48.to toxic substances in British Steel coking plants dating back

:00:49. > :00:54.to the Second World War. For years, Terry worked in the

:00:55. > :01:09.coking works. His family are adamant it was

:01:10. > :01:12.the exposure to dust and fumes which were responsible

:01:13. > :01:15.for Terry's death years later. You plan everything and then it

:01:16. > :01:27.stops dead instantly. These conditions they were exposed

:01:28. > :01:30.to four decades until more Lawyer David Johnson

:01:31. > :01:39.who is representing his widow and 325

:01:40. > :01:41.other coke workers. I've met a number of individuals

:01:42. > :01:51.that have passed away. One individual I met

:01:52. > :01:53.three days before These individuals go to work,

:01:54. > :02:03.they expect to be healthy. They go there to earn money and

:02:04. > :02:08.these individuals have conditions There is a lot of

:02:09. > :02:16.people out there and they need to know that

:02:17. > :02:20.they can put a claim in. You can get justice if you have

:02:21. > :02:22.lost your husband and they are ill and have not been able

:02:23. > :02:36.to work for how many years. Lives change through

:02:37. > :02:42.a job like that. He was on good money but look

:02:43. > :02:45.what happened at the British Steel told us

:02:46. > :02:49.they are aware of the claims made against them but say while legal

:02:50. > :02:51.action continues, they cannot This is a group action -

:02:52. > :03:04.how significant is that? It is the first step in the court

:03:05. > :03:07.process but an important one. It is a group litigation order which can

:03:08. > :03:12.be approved. Those steelworkers feel they have a case on behalf of heard

:03:13. > :03:15.as a group rather than individuals. In the long term it will be cheaper

:03:16. > :03:21.but will avoid the claimants having to go through the same process on

:03:22. > :03:26.their own. There are currently 325 people in that group but the

:03:27. > :03:28.register is not yet closed. Lawyers suspect there are hundreds more

:03:29. > :03:33.steelworkers out there who could still be added to that register. Is

:03:34. > :03:44.there any indication on how strong the case will be? Lung cancer was a

:03:45. > :03:52.serious disease back in 2012. They admitted that Coke fumes do cause

:03:53. > :03:57.lung cancer. They dispute whether they got lung cancer from working on

:03:58. > :04:01.these plants and got enough exposure to cause these diseases. The case

:04:02. > :04:05.could take two to three years to reach a conclusion and that it is

:04:06. > :04:09.time that some of these claimants may not have. Thank you.

:04:10. > :04:12.A Scarborough man has avoided jail after being convicted

:04:13. > :04:15.of using a speed camera jamming device on his car.

:04:16. > :04:16.Ben Kitto, seen here in the grey suit,

:04:17. > :04:18.had the laser blocker fitted beneath his number plate

:04:19. > :04:21.so he could travel at up to 90 miles per hour

:04:22. > :04:25.The devices which are sold legally as parking sensors,

:04:26. > :04:29.prevent police from taking an accurate reading.

:04:30. > :04:31.Campaigners feel the suspended jail sentence given

:04:32. > :04:44.The legal system is getting far too fond of giving out lenient sentences

:04:45. > :04:48.which mean families are being let down on criminals are let off the

:04:49. > :04:54.hook and this isn't acceptable. Norma members of the public do not

:04:55. > :05:00.have this device. -- normal. You must be aware of using it on the

:05:01. > :05:03.road and you may have to face higher penalties than a speeding matter.

:05:04. > :05:05.Sheffield City Council is to put up council tax

:05:06. > :05:07.by nearly 5%, an increase which includes a 3%

:05:08. > :05:09.rise specifically to pay for social care.

:05:10. > :05:11.This equates to an extra 87 pence per week

:05:12. > :05:14.The council said around 225 jobs will be lost

:05:15. > :05:19.as it tries to find extra savings of ?40 million next year.

:05:20. > :05:24.A man who used his car as a weapon to run down a petrol station

:05:25. > :05:28.attendant as he attempted to drive away with ?120

:05:29. > :05:31.worth of diesel has been jailed for 17 months.

:05:32. > :05:34.30-year-old Scott Dearing drove into Michelle Carr

:05:35. > :05:39.Miss Carr suffered bumps and bruises,

:05:40. > :05:44.Dearing was jailed having previously pleaded guilty to eight offences,

:05:45. > :05:58.Protestors in Sheffield were out for a second day to try and prevent

:05:59. > :06:02.contractors from felling two trees in Nether Edge.

:06:03. > :06:04.But this afternoon were unable to prevent a third from being

:06:05. > :06:06.chopped down after protestors were threatened with arrest.

:06:07. > :06:10.The first new council houses for 30 years have been built in Sheffield,

:06:11. > :06:14.and they'll provide a thousand homes in the city.

:06:15. > :06:21.Back in 1980 almost a third of people in England

:06:22. > :06:24.lived in a council house but today that figure

:06:25. > :06:35.In Sheffield the number of council houses has halved.

:06:36. > :06:48.now the local authority owns 40,000 homes.

:06:49. > :06:57.The 1950s and 60s saw hundreds of thousands of

:06:58. > :07:03.Families were introduced to brand-new housing

:07:04. > :07:08.estates with gardens and indoor toilets.

:07:09. > :07:10.But since the 80s, the number being built has fallen

:07:11. > :07:15.Margaret Thatcher's right to buy policy saw an

:07:16. > :07:19.explosion in the number of people buying their homes from local

:07:20. > :07:26.Today, there are more than 1 million people on waiting lists

:07:27. > :07:29.That's why here in Sheffield they are now taking

:07:30. > :07:36.These are the first new council houses to be built in

:07:37. > :07:39.The plan is for the council to provide an extra

:07:40. > :07:45.Almost 500 of them will be brand-new.

:07:46. > :07:50.Most have already been let and some of the families have already

:07:51. > :07:55.Dean and Sarah have four children all with disabilities or

:07:56. > :08:02.Dean has osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

:08:03. > :08:06.They got the keys to their new home two weeks ago.

:08:07. > :08:11.We were in a smaller three bedroomed house before.

:08:12. > :08:13.Three boys with various difficulties and

:08:14. > :08:32.Once the adaptations are in, we will be well on our way.

:08:33. > :08:35.Around 40,000 people are registered as wanting a

:08:36. > :08:37.council house in Sheffield so new homes are vital.

:08:38. > :08:40.The need for social housing has never been greater.

:08:41. > :08:44.There was a great need for two and four bedroomed homes.

:08:45. > :08:47.Presumably the people that movie will have the right

:08:48. > :08:52.In 15 years, they might not be council

:08:53. > :08:59.That is true but not everyone wants to own a home.

:09:00. > :09:04.Sheffield's brand-new council houses are now complete.

:09:05. > :09:07.They are putting the finishing touches to the

:09:08. > :09:22.brand-new street before the final families moving.

:09:23. > :09:38.It will get colder over the next few days. Tomorrow will be cool and it

:09:39. > :09:43.will cool down for Thursday, Friday and the weekend. A cold day to come

:09:44. > :09:47.tomorrow. There will be some patchy rain and drizzle which will fizzle

:09:48. > :09:50.out as we have through the afternoon. The front we will get

:09:51. > :09:55.tomorrow will bring the patchy rain and it will open its doors to cooler

:09:56. > :10:01.air from the east. Getting cooler towards the end of the week and into

:10:02. > :10:05.the weekend. Out there at the moment, we have some mist and fog

:10:06. > :10:12.which will be replaced by thick cloud spreading westwards overnight.

:10:13. > :10:17.Perhaps the odd slogan flurry -- snow flurry to the hills. Tomorrow,

:10:18. > :10:28.a grey morning. Cloud producing patchy drizzle and the odd slow --

:10:29. > :10:31.snow flurry is possible. The cloud bases will lift as the afternoon

:10:32. > :10:37.goes on and it will appear brighter with temperatures only getting up to

:10:38. > :10:41.five Celsius. Cooler as we get to Thursday and Friday. We are looking

:10:42. > :10:45.at the risk of temperatures drop below freezing. Only getting a

:10:46. > :10:49.couple of degrees above freezing by day. A lot of cloud around to

:10:50. > :10:53.Thursday, Friday and the weekend. There will be a few light showers

:10:54. > :10:58.around Thursday and Friday. There could be some snow mixed in there

:10:59. > :11:00.and increasingly so as we have through the course of the weekend.

:11:01. > :11:14.That is it from the late A cold snap is looming. Not here

:11:15. > :11:21.just yet. Probably tomorrow night on with it. To get properly colder.

:11:22. > :11:25.Cold easterly winds, going to turn cloudy as well and we've got some

:11:26. > :11:32.snow showers on the way. Seems like this not out of the question. In the

:11:33. > :11:37.short term, some cold weather around, certainly across western

:11:38. > :11:38.areas of the UK. Skies clearing and temperatures dipping away in western
