:00:00. > :00:00.Good evening and welcome to the late Look North.
:00:00. > :00:00.Tonight, doubly good news for South Yorkshire.
:00:00. > :00:00.1700 workers' jobs in South Yorkshire are safe tonight
:00:07. > :00:10.after the sale of Tata Steel to an Indian company.
:00:11. > :00:14.And super car manufacturers Mclaren race into the Sheffield region
:00:15. > :00:23.with a new factory planned creating 200 jobs.
:00:24. > :00:29.And another cold day is expected tomorrow with the potential for some
:00:30. > :00:31.snow in the weekend. I will be back later in the programme with your
:00:32. > :00:35.full, live updates. Hundreds of workers
:00:36. > :00:38.in South Yorkshire have had their jobs secured with the sale
:00:39. > :00:43.of Tata Steel to an indian company. The speciality steel business
:00:44. > :00:46.is being sold for ?100 million It safeguards the sites
:00:47. > :00:50.in Rotherham, Stocksbridge In a moment we'll get reaction
:00:51. > :00:55.from the MP for Rotherham but, first, Heidi Tomlinson,
:00:56. > :01:01.reports on the story. With long-standing customers
:01:02. > :01:04.like Rolls-Royce and Airbus, it was always hoped that
:01:05. > :01:06.South Yorkshire's expertise in producing specialist steel
:01:07. > :01:10.would appeal to a buyer. Liberty House is already firmly
:01:11. > :01:14.established in the UK steel market. Its acquisition of the sites
:01:15. > :01:16.in Rotherham and Stocksbridge The Indian firm's been quick to
:01:17. > :01:22.offer reassurance to staff at Tata. Yes, we are saying that we will
:01:23. > :01:26.maintain jobs in this business as there are at the moment
:01:27. > :01:29.and indeed we will look for ways to actually build this business
:01:30. > :01:32.and grow this business The ?100 million deal will bring
:01:33. > :01:41.relief to the 1700 people who work for Tata in
:01:42. > :01:43.Rotherham and Stocksbridge. The plants were put up
:01:44. > :01:46.for sale last March. The company blamed high energy costs
:01:47. > :01:56.for its own profitability. The company blamed high energy costs
:01:57. > :01:58.for its unprofitability. In the summer, unions
:01:59. > :02:00.and politicians staged protest marches finding government
:02:01. > :02:02.help to keep the industry That strength of feeling
:02:03. > :02:05.and dedication has been I think what it is is about a credit
:02:06. > :02:13.to the employees and trade unions and the management here,
:02:14. > :02:16.it has been about pulling together and really finding something,
:02:17. > :02:18.which will make us fit for the future through that
:02:19. > :02:20.transformation pan and focusing for the future through that
:02:21. > :02:22.transformation plan and focusing on the value-added product such
:02:23. > :02:24.as aerospace, which take us Unions are in the process
:02:25. > :02:30.of negotiating a new pension scheme. But there has been a positive
:02:31. > :02:37.response to the Liberty deal. Given the right investment,
:02:38. > :02:40.given our product that we make, we should be able to be fit
:02:41. > :02:42.for the future and move on and be great for this area
:02:43. > :02:45.because without this steel industry, There's no doubt that steel
:02:46. > :02:50.jobs dominate the area's employment and have done
:02:51. > :02:52.since the 19th century. Security of those jobs will benefit
:02:53. > :02:55.the surrounding economy. South Yorkshire can continue to take
:02:56. > :02:58.pride in this reputation Well, earlier Rotherham's MP
:02:59. > :03:06.Sarah Champion gave me her Oh, I am absolutely
:03:07. > :03:11.delighted and relieved. I am just really grateful that both
:03:12. > :03:15.Tata, the unions and the workers really sort of strove to get
:03:16. > :03:19.the best deal. Speciality steel is such
:03:20. > :03:28.an important part of our area, such an important part
:03:29. > :03:30.of our economy, so to have that There has been such uncertainty
:03:31. > :03:34.over this, hasn't there? Have you been surprised that it has
:03:35. > :03:37.actually finally come off? Well, for years now there has been
:03:38. > :03:39.uncertainty around steel. We have always argued that
:03:40. > :03:42.speciality steel in South Yorkshire is the best in the world
:03:43. > :03:44.and deserves to be saved. The pressure that the workers have
:03:45. > :03:47.been under, not knowing if they are going to have a future,
:03:48. > :03:51.not knowing if they are going to be So today is just a huge relief,
:03:52. > :03:59.both for my town of Rotherham but also for the workers
:04:00. > :04:02.in the whole of South Yorkshire. And how reassured you think those
:04:03. > :04:05.workers will be under this employer? I think that Liberty House
:04:06. > :04:07.is a good employer. There has been a lot of due
:04:08. > :04:10.diligence done by both Tata and the unions to make sure
:04:11. > :04:12.they are going to protect all of the workers'
:04:13. > :04:14.rights going forward. The biggest threat
:04:15. > :04:16.we have got the moment We have been campaigning for years
:04:17. > :04:21.to try and get them to understand the pressures that steel is facing
:04:22. > :04:31.at the moment, so things like incredibly high energy prices
:04:32. > :04:33.that makes them uncompetitive, the tariff system, which means
:04:34. > :04:36.that the Chinese can dump their steel here,
:04:37. > :04:38.and of course the increasingly Whilst it's great news that
:04:39. > :04:41.Liberty House is going to be taking over specialist steel,
:04:42. > :04:43.we need to make sure that the government plays their part
:04:44. > :04:46.to secure its future as well. Have there been any
:04:47. > :04:48.compromises in terms Sadly there have been
:04:49. > :04:51.compromises about the pension. Typically, unfortunately,
:04:52. > :04:52.it is the workers that I think, though, they have
:04:53. > :04:56.been pragmatic about it. Workers should be commended
:04:57. > :05:02.because they have taken personal financial cuts so that they can
:05:03. > :05:04.have a secure future. It is not something you ever
:05:05. > :05:07.want to see but I do admire them Sarah Champion, think
:05:08. > :05:11.you very much for your time. Next tonight, and the luxury super
:05:12. > :05:13.car manufacturer McLaren is going to build a ?50 million
:05:14. > :05:16.chassis factory creating The factory will build
:05:17. > :05:20.parts for the super cars at the University
:05:21. > :05:23.of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research
:05:24. > :05:25.Centre near Rotherham. Construction's due to start soon,
:05:26. > :05:29.with two years of research and development work
:05:30. > :05:30.ahead of production. If you like your toys,
:05:31. > :05:36.you're probably familiar The ultimate in precision
:05:37. > :05:42.engineering and pretty soon made in Yorkshire,
:05:43. > :05:48.well, this bit anyway. It's the chassis, which up
:05:49. > :05:50.until now has been But today a deal was signed,
:05:51. > :05:53.which will bring production To have very supportive partners
:05:54. > :05:59.makes it work but actually because there has been this kind
:06:00. > :06:07.of work in the region for a time, growing, you know, there's quite
:06:08. > :06:10.a bit of areas here with Boeing, with Airbus, with Rolls-Royce plc,
:06:11. > :06:14.then there's some skilled people here in the area already,
:06:15. > :06:16.so we're not starting from scratch, we're able to build on something
:06:17. > :06:19.that has already been started In fact, the prototype will be made
:06:20. > :06:26.here at Sheffield University's factory 2050, just up the road
:06:27. > :06:28.from the Advanced It's exactly the kind of investment
:06:29. > :06:31.in the region's pushing for. This is a fully commercial
:06:32. > :06:33.manufacturing environment where stuff that's made in this
:06:34. > :06:35.place can do things. The University of Sheffield
:06:36. > :06:37.was Boeing's aerospace We have eliminated the gap
:06:38. > :06:46.between ideas, research and product. I think we are the only place
:06:47. > :06:49.actually has done it in that way. Now, though the price tag on these
:06:50. > :06:52.cars means they are way outside the budget of most of us,
:06:53. > :06:56.the fact that at least part of them is going to be built in the region
:06:57. > :06:59.is a fantastic calling card. It is also a brilliant way
:07:00. > :07:01.to get more young people 200 jobs will be created
:07:02. > :07:05.here, including a number First of those has just
:07:06. > :07:12.given the good news. It is exciting and yes,
:07:13. > :07:15.it was pretty unexpected. I count myself extremely lucky
:07:16. > :07:22.and to be working on machines The technical bit is the material
:07:23. > :07:32.the chassis will be made from, something that will help develop
:07:33. > :07:34.more electric cars going forward. But realistically, most people just
:07:35. > :07:37.like the way they look. I love manufacturing,
:07:38. > :07:41.I love engineering. I think it's a fascinating
:07:42. > :07:43.discipline but when this is the product that results from it,
:07:44. > :07:46.you can't help getting, you know, inspired, excited,
:07:47. > :07:48.and motivated by it and it I know all the people that
:07:49. > :07:52.work for us are really, really proud of the products
:07:53. > :07:59.that we make. The first Yorkshire built chassis
:08:00. > :08:02.could be powering off the line Danni Hewson, BBC
:08:03. > :08:04.Look North, Sheffield. In other news, the dispute over
:08:05. > :08:07.train guards which brought the south east to a halt has spread
:08:08. > :08:10.to Northern Rail, which runs The RMT Union is to ballot
:08:11. > :08:13.conductors on strike action. It wants assurances about their
:08:14. > :08:16.future role on the network. The union is already involved
:08:17. > :08:20.in a long-running dispute Arriva North, which operates
:08:21. > :08:24.the service, has called the ballot Controversial plans for a new waste
:08:25. > :08:30.incinerator at Thwaites, near Keighley, have been approved
:08:31. > :08:33.by councillors in Bradford. People who live near the site say
:08:34. > :08:36.the new plant will be a blot on the landscape and affect
:08:37. > :08:39.the value of their homes. They're also worried
:08:40. > :08:41.about possible risks to health. But councillors believe
:08:42. > :08:43.the benefits of the proposal Leeds Rhinos have lost their opening
:08:44. > :08:51.match 6-4 to St Helens Leeds, who endured a miserable
:08:52. > :08:56.season in 2016, were the better team in the first half with centre
:08:57. > :09:00.Joel Moon handing off debutant Ryan Morgan to score a try midway
:09:01. > :09:04.through the first half, but St Helens drew level two minutes
:09:05. > :09:09.into the second half when stand-off Theo Fages,
:09:10. > :09:11.dummied his way over the line and Mark Percival's conversion
:09:12. > :09:25.put his side in front. OK let's catch up with the weather.
:09:26. > :09:32.Did going to snow? Yes, I think it is. Not just on the tops? Or likely,
:09:33. > :09:36.several centimetres for the higher ground but there could be wintry mix
:09:37. > :09:38.for the lower grounds. We are most concerned about Friday night into
:09:39. > :09:42.Saturday. There has been really drab Saturday. There has been really drab
:09:43. > :09:44.today and I think for a lot of us it will be similar tomorrow. Although
:09:45. > :09:48.there should be some brighter spells it will be predominantly cloudy,
:09:49. > :09:53.chilly and wintry showers around as well. It is this feature later on
:09:54. > :09:58.Friday night into Saturday where the showers will become heavier, more
:09:59. > :10:03.frequent and there will be a mix of rain, sleet and snow. Not exclusive
:10:04. > :10:06.to higher ground but I think that is where we will probably get the Cuban
:10:07. > :10:14.nation of a few centimetres. Lower levels will mainly have sleet and
:10:15. > :10:20.snow, too. -- probably get an accumulation. I think it is eyes
:10:21. > :10:29.that will actually be the risk into tomorrow on untreated rose EU
:10:30. > :10:33.brogues. -- untreated roads. There will be brighter spells from time to
:10:34. > :10:38.time but from the word go there will be a few showers around you driven
:10:39. > :10:41.in on that north-easterly breeze, which will freshen along the coast
:10:42. > :10:46.later. Some brighter spells but quite a lot of cloud and a few of
:10:47. > :10:50.those wintry showers. Feeling really cold, particularly along the coast
:10:51. > :10:54.once that breeze freshens. Temperatures only two or three
:10:55. > :10:58.Celsius. A mix of rain, sleet and snow showers overnight into Saturday
:10:59. > :10:59.and three Saturday slightly less cold and quieting down from Sunday
:11:00. > :11:02.onwards. That is it from the will turn a bit less cold again. All
:11:03. > :11:14.the way up seven Celsius. At this time of year we can often
:11:15. > :11:16.get the weather stories that reflect the battle between winter and
:11:17. > :11:21.spring, and that's what's been happening in New York in the USA.
:11:22. > :11:27.Yesterday, 17 Celsius, but today, it's been bitterly cold, just a
:11:28. > :11:28.daytime maximum of -2, a significant
