:00:33. > :00:34.Tonight, the wife of former Leeds Rugby League star

:00:35. > :00:38.John Atkinson has told the BBC there've been times when she's

:00:39. > :00:45.She says the strain of coping with her husband's dementia has

:00:46. > :00:48.John developed Alzheimer's about five years ago,

:00:49. > :00:52.and in that time has become entirely dependent on Carol.

:00:53. > :00:55.She's now decided to share their story and here

:00:56. > :01:03.Are we going to have a shower? No.

:01:04. > :01:16.It's now mid-March and he's had two showers since the 2nd of January,

:01:17. > :01:22.but it seems that it's quite common that they develop

:01:23. > :01:29.That's a good scrub you're giving them.

:01:30. > :01:33.He's still very sweet and very gentle, and there are parts of John

:01:34. > :01:37.that I still recognise, but the saddest thing is, mostly,

:01:38. > :01:54.It's just hard, because he is still, despite everything, he's still got

:01:55. > :01:58.that resemblance of that big strong man, but it's... He's...

:01:59. > :02:05.That's gone - the thing that made John John has gone.

:02:06. > :02:09.Just go up the path and it's on the road.

:02:10. > :02:19.I feel like I'm the mother of a 6-foot tall,

:02:20. > :02:30.Might he need to go to the loo before we leave this

:02:31. > :02:34.So it's really like being the mum of a small child.

:02:35. > :02:36.Good morning. How are you?

:02:37. > :02:49.I don't think you have, because you've not spilled

:02:50. > :02:53.I never, ever understood really what what hopeless meant,

:02:54. > :03:09.until this happened, and this absolute total lack of hope...

:03:10. > :03:18.Is your ankle bothering you? No.

:03:19. > :03:41.Nothing is going to get better until the person dies,

:03:42. > :03:44.but you don't want the person to die, you just want them to get

:03:45. > :03:49.I have got you some clean pyjamas out.

:03:50. > :03:55.I don't want John to go into a home, because he can do exactly

:03:56. > :03:58.what he wants here and he has got a happy life.

:03:59. > :04:07.I don't think carers have happy lives.

:04:08. > :04:10.Whilst I sit here and I can say I have no intention

:04:11. > :04:15.of taking my life, it does get fairly hopeless sometimes,

:04:16. > :04:27.and it comforts me to know that, if I need to, I can step away.

:04:28. > :04:36.I could never leave him, but I could finish both of us off,

:04:37. > :04:47.And if you've been affected by Carol's situation,

:04:48. > :04:49.you can go to the BBC's Action Line website, where there

:04:50. > :04:55.are contact details for organisations who can help.

:04:56. > :04:57.Tonight, parents of pupils at a South Yorkshire school

:04:58. > :05:01.were told that their children's school is losing ?1,000 a day.

:05:02. > :05:04.The headteacher of Penistone Grammar School says a lack of cash means

:05:05. > :05:08.staff have been made redundant and class sizes have grown.

:05:09. > :05:12.The Government is currently consulting on proposals to change

:05:13. > :05:14.the way schools are funded, but teachers warn it won't solve

:05:15. > :05:20.Tonight, parents were told just how serious the school's

:05:21. > :05:25.Penistone Grammar is currently losing ?1000 a day.

:05:26. > :05:28.The headteacher claims it's the fourth worst funded school

:05:29. > :05:33.One of our governors really likened our situation to holding

:05:34. > :05:38.a ticking time bomb, and it really does feel like that.

:05:39. > :05:41.I'm very concerned about the pressures that

:05:42. > :05:44.puts our staff under, and we are at the absolute limit

:05:45. > :05:51.40 staff have been made redundant here over the last five years,

:05:52. > :05:56.and the learning support centre has closed.

:05:57. > :05:58.Penistone Grammar is a popular school -

:05:59. > :06:02.it's oversubscribed and it's rated as good by Ofsted -

:06:03. > :06:05.but, with the current funding problems, parents and staff

:06:06. > :06:08.are worried about maintaining those high standards.

:06:09. > :06:11.Less extracurricular activities, class sizes have gone up...

:06:12. > :06:17.We want them to have the same level of education as other schools.

:06:18. > :06:20.It is clearly quite shocking, and clearly there is something

:06:21. > :06:26.fundamentally wrong with how funding has been managed across the country.

:06:27. > :06:28.It's a tragedy, really, because it's such a good school,

:06:29. > :06:34.and the simple fact is, facing the problems it is facing

:06:35. > :06:38.economically, the standards that it has upheld for so many years,

:06:39. > :06:40.which have been excellent, are going to dip.

:06:41. > :06:43.The Government is proposing a new way of working out

:06:44. > :06:47.how schools are funded, and the consultation is under way.

:06:48. > :07:00.But the headteacher here says even that won't address the shortfall

:07:01. > :07:13.Abi Jaiyeola, BBC Look North, Penistone.

:07:14. > :07:15.A ?6 million investment in one of Sheffield's oldest

:07:16. > :07:17.William Cook Holdings designs and manufactures components

:07:18. > :07:19.for blue-chip customers in the energy, defence,

:07:20. > :07:22.Today a new factory has been officially opened,

:07:23. > :07:25.which is home to cutting-edge technology that will help

:07:26. > :07:28.Our business correspondent Danni Hewson reports.

:07:29. > :07:29.Since the 1800s, this company has been steel-casting,

:07:30. > :07:31.crafting world-class products used in trains, planes,

:07:32. > :07:34.There have been many changes, and many challenges,

:07:35. > :07:39.and the last couple of years are no exception.

:07:40. > :07:42.Faced with competition from places like China,

:07:43. > :07:46.many manufacturers have had to think hard about the future.

:07:47. > :07:51.Many people say, why don't you just pack it in?

:07:52. > :07:58.This is my life's work and I want it to last after I'm long gone.

:07:59. > :08:02.I have invested to give this company a future and to give

:08:03. > :08:08.and, if you like, to give British manufacturing a future,

:08:09. > :08:12.So, when you reason it like that, the decision, after all,

:08:13. > :08:19.?6 million has brought new toys, including the world's largest

:08:20. > :08:23.Those invited to the official opening of the factory

:08:24. > :08:27.were shown how the technology will change the business.

:08:28. > :08:30.Guest of honour, double Olympic champion Lord Sebastien Coe,

:08:31. > :08:33.whose father once worked at a Sheffield cutlers'.

:08:34. > :08:37.We need more young people to want to think the manufacturing

:08:38. > :08:42.We want more young people to become engineers, particularly women,

:08:43. > :08:47.So this is very much a part of what I've always been

:08:48. > :08:51.I'm not an engineer, I'm an economist by profession.

:08:52. > :08:55.Most of the engineers in my family thought that was a bit of a copout

:08:56. > :08:58.and wasn't really a proper job, but, having said that, this

:08:59. > :09:04.While Lord Coe thinks back, workers here are looking forward.

:09:05. > :09:07.200 jobs safeguarded, another chapter begun

:09:08. > :09:15.Danni Hewson, BBC Look North, Sheffield.

:09:16. > :09:23.Now let's take a look at the weather.

:09:24. > :09:28.And this evening and it is now cleared away, and we are having a

:09:29. > :09:32.fine night at the moment. Temperatures across the deals around

:09:33. > :09:36.three Celsius. A chilly night to come with a touch of frost in

:09:37. > :09:40.places, especially rural relief. A cool start to the day tomorrow and

:09:41. > :09:44.cooler throughout, the breeze picking up and strong in places.

:09:45. > :09:48.Some rain around, more especially across the hills. A bit further east

:09:49. > :09:55.as well. A general theme of the next few days, as you can tell from the

:09:56. > :09:58.pressure chart, and unsettled one. Not a complete wash-out, Duval way

:09:59. > :10:02.from the hill is there will be some dry and possibly bright weather, but

:10:03. > :10:06.a breezy start to the weekend and weather friends to content with.

:10:07. > :10:12.Fine at the moment with temperatures low across the place, and cloud more

:10:13. > :10:17.later but a touch of frost brulee with temperatures down to around two

:10:18. > :10:20.or five Celsius. A cold start to the day tomorrow and generally tomorrow

:10:21. > :10:25.a lot of cloud around, patchy rain across the deals and Pennines at

:10:26. > :10:29.first. More persistent and it will make its way further east. Like and

:10:30. > :10:34.patchy away from the hills and more persistent and heavy spells across

:10:35. > :10:38.the West and up slopes, and a breezy day. A fresh to strong and gusty

:10:39. > :10:45.south westerly breeze, and cooler than it has been as well. Midweek up

:10:46. > :10:51.to 16 Celsius, so named Celsius with a fresh breeze it will feel quite

:10:52. > :10:54.chilly. Looking further ahead, the weekend looks unsettled. Not a

:10:55. > :10:59.complete wash-out but some spells of wet and windy weather. Named Celsius

:11:00. > :11:01.Friday. Breezy to start next week. That's it from us.

:11:02. > :11:07.there will be rain around, most occurring overnight.

:11:08. > :11:12.Good evening, quite a range of whether an offer earlier today in

:11:13. > :11:16.the north and north-west of the UK quite a lot of showers around,

:11:17. > :11:19.lively ones, little bit of sunshine in between. The best of the sunshine

:11:20. > :11:23.to be found at the other end of the country towards the south-east in

:11:24. > :11:27.Kent, lovely picture here from one of our weather watchers. A range of

:11:28. > :11:31.temperatures, too. 17 degrees for a few, on the other side of the

:11:32. > :11:35.weather front, only seven or 8 degrees. Showers in the north and

:11:36. > :11:38.west. The fresh air will win out over tonight coming in behind the

:11:39. > :11:42.cold front, which isn't bringing much rain but it will bring some,

:11:43. > :11:47.clearing away towards the continent, cold air following behind, as do the

:11:48. > :11:49.showers. Wintry weather over the hills in northern Scotland. A much

:11:50. > :11:56.colder night than it has been recently. Into single figures, touch

:11:57. > :11:57.of frost in raw parts. Some icy patches in northern Scotland, where
