:00:00. > :00:08.Tornado, the Doncaster-designed locomotive, becomes the first steam

:00:09. > :00:16.engine to hit 100 miles an hour for half a century.

:00:17. > :00:24.Quite rocky, so swinging about a bit and standing guard groaned but it's

:00:25. > :00:27.good fun. And North Yorkshire Police

:00:28. > :00:38.mobilise their latest weapon And I'll bring you details of the

:00:39. > :00:42.weather over the next few days. Join me for the live updated forecast.

:00:43. > :00:48.First tonight, 27 men have appeared in court in Huddersfield today

:00:49. > :00:53.charged with dozens of historical sexual offences against 18 women.

:00:54. > :00:57.The offences include rape and trafficking of the women

:00:58. > :01:00.Our home affairs correspondent Spencer Stokes sent

:01:01. > :01:05.This was the first court appearance following a major

:01:06. > :01:09.three-and-a-half-year-long police investigation in Huddersfield.

:01:10. > :01:13.Last month 27 men were charged with historic sexual offences

:01:14. > :01:18.and two women were charged with child neglect, all relating

:01:19. > :01:23.to the abuse of 18 girls aged between 11 and 17 dating

:01:24. > :01:31.The defendants arrived at Huddersfield Magistrates this

:01:32. > :01:35.morning individually or in small groups and many faced

:01:36. > :01:40.abuse from protesters as they entered the court building.

:01:41. > :01:44.There was a large police presence, around 25 officers, and a couple

:01:45. > :01:48.of hours later when they left court, more abuse was shouted at them,

:01:49. > :01:54.so a tense atmosphere outside court as this legal process got under way.

:01:55. > :01:58.Each of the defendants faces numerous charges including rape,

:01:59. > :02:00.trafficking of girls, moving girls around for sexual

:02:01. > :02:05.purposes, sexual abuse of girls and supplying

:02:06. > :02:13.One defendant, Amere Singh Dhaliwal from Holly Road in Huddersfield, 34,

:02:14. > :02:20.has 54 offences to answer, 21 of rape and 14 of trafficking.

:02:21. > :02:25.29 defendants had their cases referred from this court

:02:26. > :02:28.to Leeds Crown Court for trial and they're next scheduled

:02:29. > :02:36.to appear in court in Leeds next month on May 11th.

:02:37. > :02:40.Rail history has been made in Yorkshire early today with

:02:41. > :02:42.one of Doncaster's finest designs, the Tornado, becoming the first

:02:43. > :02:45.steam engine to hit 100 miles an hour for half a century.

:02:46. > :02:49.In a moment we'll find out why this matters to the region's economy.

:02:50. > :03:03.Tornado and her crew prepared for an extraordinary adventure.

:03:04. > :03:08.since steam was last pushed to the ton on the mainline.

:03:09. > :03:10.Under a cover of secrecy and darkness,

:03:11. > :03:16.It had taken months to plan the experimental run.

:03:17. > :03:21.What we want now is to assess the locomotive dynamically.

:03:22. > :03:23.We've proven it's got the horsepower

:03:24. > :03:26.to run at 90 miles an hour, as we've seen.

:03:27. > :03:31.But we now want to be able to go beyond that and just give ourselves

:03:32. > :03:35.that extra margin of safety and performance.

:03:36. > :03:39.And that extra margin meant something very special.

:03:40. > :03:42.Tornado is usually limited to 75 miles an hour,

:03:43. > :03:44.like other steam engines on the mainline.

:03:45. > :03:47.They want to be able to regularly run at 90

:03:48. > :03:50.and, as part of the test, they had official permission

:03:51. > :04:06.The power that you need to do this

:04:07. > :04:09.is quite astonishing, really, I think.

:04:10. > :04:11.If there was any problem on the footplate,

:04:12. > :04:14.they would have backed off as soon as they had done the ton,

:04:15. > :04:16.and they're just cruising at the high 90s.

:04:17. > :04:22.But with the needle all the way over, anything but quiet.

:04:23. > :04:25.It took two men sharing the shovel to provide tonnes of coal

:04:26. > :04:29.to satisfy Tornado's voracious appetite.

:04:30. > :04:32.As they returned to York, the driver and fireman were cheered.

:04:33. > :04:37.So, you know, sort of swinging about a bit

:04:38. > :04:41.and trying to stand our ground, but it was good fun!

:04:42. > :04:44.We've got everything from 99.9 and who knows what to 101.6.

:04:45. > :04:50.That's the problem with doing these things

:04:51. > :04:53.In 1968, they said the steam age was done.

:04:54. > :05:01.Last night proved legends are still being written.

:05:02. > :05:02.Earlier I spoke to railway historian Tim Dunn.

:05:03. > :05:06.He said the test had three main significances.

:05:07. > :05:09.It showed there is an appetite for this stuff, I think it shows

:05:10. > :05:12.people up and down the country want to know what's been

:05:13. > :05:16.going on and it's remarkable they can go that fast and it proves

:05:17. > :05:22.this can be done, a new-build locomotive on a high-speed main line

:05:23. > :05:25.and it shows people can come together, Network Rail

:05:26. > :05:28.and the volunteers going above and beyond, coming together

:05:29. > :05:31.and making something remarkable happen.

:05:32. > :05:34.Heritage rail is a big part of tourism in our region.

:05:35. > :05:37.What will this test mean for tourism here?

:05:38. > :05:42.These things have an application affect so I'm expecting to see

:05:43. > :05:46.people this weekend turning up at local railways all over the North

:05:47. > :05:50.and in the South over Easter and visiting because this

:05:51. > :05:53.You see one of these things rocket through,

:05:54. > :05:56.you've got to see it for yourself, perhaps at a slightly lower pace

:05:57. > :05:58.at a local steam railway, so everywhere from North Yorkshire

:05:59. > :06:02.moors to Keighley, I'm sure we'll see an upturn in visitors.

:06:03. > :06:04.Do you think steam could ever become part of the integral

:06:05. > :06:13.I don't think they are integral to the day-in day-out working

:06:14. > :06:18.but you saw recently a viaduct was reopened, the Flying Scotsman

:06:19. > :06:23.has been a huge part, an icon of the railway in the past

:06:24. > :06:28.year or so and this shows they are a wonderful thing to bring

:06:29. > :06:32.people together and unite people around the network and show what can

:06:33. > :06:37.be done and take joy in what can be seen as quite a mundane operational

:06:38. > :06:40.thing, this brings a bit of joy to people.

:06:41. > :06:43.Your enthusiasm for trains has made me want to go

:06:44. > :06:49.Despite tougher new penalties, it seems drivers are still risking

:06:50. > :06:53.lives by using phones and other electronic gadgets at the wheel.

:06:54. > :06:56.Now police in North Yorkshire are taking steps to spot

:06:57. > :07:01.Phil Bodmer was given exclusive access to the operation.

:07:02. > :07:12.Texting, phone in the left hand, looking down.

:07:13. > :07:17.He's looking down, he's been looking down for an age,

:07:18. > :07:22.We are looking for you, we do want to catch you,

:07:23. > :07:30.Uncompromising words of advice from traffic constable Dave Sievers

:07:31. > :07:40.It's just after 10am, and Operation Tramline is under way.

:07:41. > :07:44.On-board this unmarked truck are two police officers.

:07:45. > :07:46.Within five minutes, a driver is seen using a phone.

:07:47. > :07:49.Yeah, he's on the phone there, isn't he?

:07:50. > :07:51.The vehicle is stopped by a marked police car

:07:52. > :07:56.He said he was operating the screen of his iPhone,

:07:57. > :08:02.He actually denied that he was texting or making a telephone call.

:08:03. > :08:06.But the fact is he's still got his phone in his hand, he's using it.

:08:07. > :08:09.That's going to be a distraction to him while he is driving,

:08:10. > :08:13.So he will be dealt with for that offence.

:08:14. > :08:15.It's just over a month since the penalty for using a mobile phone

:08:16. > :08:18.at the wheel was increased to six point and a ?200 fine.

:08:19. > :08:22.But, despite extensive publicity, some drivers, it seems,

:08:23. > :08:26.People are ignoring it, and they don't realise

:08:27. > :08:30.the consequences of what they are doing.

:08:31. > :08:33.We are on day four now, and we are catching people

:08:34. > :08:38.Yesterday, we had four on a mobile phone

:08:39. > :08:44.One of the problems the police face is actually spotting drivers

:08:45. > :08:47.or using electronic devices behind the wheel.

:08:48. > :08:49.What the truck does is give them the elevation

:08:50. > :08:53.to see exactly what the motorists are up to.

:08:54. > :08:58.A short time later, the truck spots another motorist flouting the law.

:08:59. > :09:03.A white transporter, to the near side of us.

:09:04. > :09:08.None of the drivers stopped while we filmed

:09:09. > :09:13.Police say six points and the ?200 fine reflects

:09:14. > :09:23.If it saves a life, that's a small price to pay.

:09:24. > :09:25.And we have one Super League result for you tonight -

:09:26. > :09:34.Huddersfield Giants lost to Catalans Dragons 22-29.

:09:35. > :09:40.That's it from me. Paul is here now with the weather. How is looking

:09:41. > :11:10.on Sunday. Here is Tomasz. Good evening.

:11:11. > :11:18.The weather in the run-up to Christmas... Easter! I got ahead of

:11:19. > :11:25.myself there! It isn't looking especially great, nor is it looking

:11:26. > :11:28.all that sunny. It will be changeable, it's been changeable

:11:29. > :11:33.today. You can see cloud streaming out of the north-west of the

:11:34. > :11:39.country. You can see some showers getting into north western parts of

:11:40. > :11:42.the UK, but eastern areas will remain pretty clear tonight, so here

:11:43. > :11:46.we have some frost on the way first thing, ground frost, nothing more,

:11:47. > :11:52.and it will be gone by the time the sun is up. First thing in the

:11:53. > :11:57.morning, some sunshine around across one or two parts of the east here.

:11:58. > :12:02.Western areas probably a little bit more cloudy, maybe showers getting

:12:03. > :12:03.into north western areas of England, maybe
