:00:21. > :00:22.Jo Cox was 41, a mum with two small children.
:00:23. > :00:37.She's been described as one of the nicest people in Parliament.
:00:38. > :00:47.I am shocked that she was killed serving her community. Tonight, the
:00:48. > :00:53.circumstances of how she died are being investigated by the police. At
:00:54. > :00:56.52-year-old man has been arrested. It was reported that he shouted
:00:57. > :01:08.Britain first when police apprehended him.
:01:09. > :01:16.June evening to you from Birstall, as Tynan shocked this evening. The
:01:17. > :01:23.local MP was shot and attack by a knife outside her advice surgery
:01:24. > :01:27.this lunchtime. Tonight, 52 old man is in custody and an investigation
:01:28. > :01:32.is underway as to the circumstances and reasons for the attack. There
:01:33. > :01:38.are reports that the killer shouted Britain first when he was arrested.
:01:39. > :01:46.Let me tell you a little bit about Jo Cox, she is married mum of two.
:01:47. > :01:53.She was Labour MP for Batley and Spen since the elections last year.
:01:54. > :02:01.Recently, the press called a news conference and told us this. Just
:02:02. > :02:05.before one o'clock today, Jo Cox was attacked in Market Street in
:02:06. > :02:15.Birstall. I am now very sad and have to report that she has died as a
:02:16. > :02:18.result of her injuries. I would like to express our deepest sympathies to
:02:19. > :02:36.her family and friends at this time. There was an attack on the
:02:37. > :02:44.77-year-old man nearby whose injuries are not life-threatening.
:02:45. > :02:49.Weapons including a firearm having recovered from a man arrested. Jo
:02:50. > :02:53.Cox was pronounced deceased by a doctor who was working with a
:02:54. > :02:59.paramedic crew that were attending to her serious injuries.
:03:00. > :03:02.There is a large and significant crime scene
:03:03. > :03:06.and there is a large police presence in the area.
:03:07. > :03:15.underway to establish the motive for this attack.
:03:16. > :03:17.There are specifically trained officers with Jo's
:03:18. > :03:20.immediate family who are fully aware of what is taking place and we would
:03:21. > :03:22.ask the media to respect their privacy at this
:03:23. > :03:28.Additional officers are working in the local community this
:03:29. > :03:30.afternoon and evening in order to provide
:03:31. > :03:36.reassurance and support to our local communities.
:03:37. > :03:40.Clearly as this enquiry is at a very early stage and we have
:03:41. > :03:42.an individual under arrest we are not in a position
:03:43. > :03:47.to discuss any motives at this time.
:03:48. > :03:49.We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this
:03:50. > :04:03.I am Mark Burns Williamson the Police and Crimes
:04:04. > :04:05.Commissioner for Leeds and West Yorkshire.
:04:06. > :04:10.My thoughts and prayers are with Jo's family at this time.
:04:11. > :04:19.I have worked closely with Jo sensuous collected and I'm deeply
:04:20. > :04:22.I have worked closely with Jo since she was elected and I'm deeply
:04:23. > :04:25.shocked that such a talented young woman has been so senselessly
:04:26. > :04:28.Whilst working in her constituency and circling her
:04:29. > :04:43.I want to try and reassure communities that our
:04:44. > :04:45.information is that this is a localised incident.
:04:46. > :04:49.I must stress that investigations are ongoing and
:04:50. > :04:52.We need to let the police do their job in
:04:53. > :04:55.understanding exactly what has happened that has led to this hugely
:04:56. > :04:59.tragic incident and channel all of our thoughts into supporting the
:05:00. > :05:05.families and communities affected at this time.
:05:06. > :05:19.Tonight the Home Secretary Theresa May had this to say:
:05:20. > :05:31.This is a dreadful event and my heart goes out to Jo Cox husband.
:05:32. > :05:35.The pain they must now be in is unimaginable and our thoughts and
:05:36. > :05:41.prayers are with them at this terrible time. The fool details of
:05:42. > :05:47.what happened outside her constituency surgery this afternoon
:05:48. > :05:53.are not yet clear. And hurled the facts have been fully established I
:05:54. > :05:57.will not comment further. It is entirely appropriate that all
:05:58. > :06:03.campaigning for the referendum has been suspended. All of us are united
:06:04. > :06:05.in our deep sadness at the loss of one of our brightest and most
:06:06. > :06:10.popular Westminster colleagues. That was the Home
:06:11. > :06:11.Secretary Theresa May. As we heard from the police,
:06:12. > :06:14.this incident happened just before 1pm at Jo Cox's advice
:06:15. > :06:16.surgery in the library in Market Street in
:06:17. > :06:28.the centre of Birstall. Our reporter Cathy Killick
:06:29. > :06:41.was on the scene shortly afterwards The street is cordoned off as a
:06:42. > :06:45.murder scene. It was here that two shots were fired just before 1pm
:06:46. > :06:52.this afternoon. The victim was Jo Cox. Recently elected she was a
:06:53. > :06:58.mother of two. She took the seat for Labour in the last election. She was
:06:59. > :07:03.holding a surgery in the library. Eyewitnesses heard screams and saw
:07:04. > :07:10.her being a tax between two parked cars. Her attacker brought out a gun
:07:11. > :07:14.and fired twice and then calmly walks away. One man who tried to
:07:15. > :07:23.tackle him was injured and is now being treated for his wounds. He
:07:24. > :07:34.fired another shot as well. Between the first and the second there was
:07:35. > :07:40.about three or four seconds. Be helicopters started coming. We ran
:07:41. > :07:46.over and she was lying on the floor bleeding. We try to do CPR. We
:07:47. > :07:51.couldn't do anything to help her. The man had a black hat on and he
:07:52. > :07:59.was walking away casually. He was not running. Jo Cox was taking to
:08:00. > :08:04.the hospital by anglers and police escort. At 5pm news that she had
:08:05. > :08:07.died of her injuries was released by the police. While she was being
:08:08. > :08:14.treated and armed police operation took place in Birstall. A 52 old man
:08:15. > :08:19.named as Thomas Mair has been arrested and is being held by
:08:20. > :08:24.police. The reaction in Birstall has been one of absolute shock. Crowds
:08:25. > :08:31.have been gathering all afternoon. It is a small place and word has
:08:32. > :08:35.spread very quickly. People are offering thoughts and prayers for Jo
:08:36. > :08:39.Cox and her family. A detailed investigation at the scene is
:08:40. > :08:44.underway. Police are trying to establish what may have led to this
:08:45. > :08:53.attack on a women doing her job representing and helping the people
:08:54. > :08:59.who elected her. A lot of people witnessed this murder. Here is one
:09:00. > :09:07.of them. You have a cafe here. Tel is. We were in the restaurant and
:09:08. > :09:15.everyone was having their dinner. We were darting about the football
:09:16. > :09:19.match. It was a normal day. All of a sudden I saw people rushing down the
:09:20. > :09:27.street screaming and yelling. It is not normal. It is very frightening.
:09:28. > :09:38.It was as if they were very concerned about something happening.
:09:39. > :09:42.Did usually shots? We saw a man taking something behind the car that
:09:43. > :09:51.we couldn't see. I didn't know that it was Jo Cox. Somebody tried to
:09:52. > :10:02.restrain him. We thought it might be domestic violence. We got out and we
:10:03. > :10:11.saw the guy pulled the gun out of his bag. He was shaking it around
:10:12. > :10:21.and then he fired it. I thought he fired it at the crowd. A terrible
:10:22. > :10:30.thing to witness. You is adamant that he was going to kill her. He
:10:31. > :10:34.intended to kill her. A woman who gave everything for her
:10:35. > :10:39.constituency. I know Jo Cox personally. She came to my cafe and
:10:40. > :10:50.we campaigned together for the Birstall seats. She is a wonderful
:10:51. > :10:53.lady. She represents the youth for future politicians for this country
:10:54. > :11:01.and she has got a lovely smile and a very good and outgoing personality.
:11:02. > :11:05.She is transparent and truthful and outgoing. She loves people and she
:11:06. > :11:12.serves Birstall very well. Thank you. Here is our crime
:11:13. > :11:19.correspondence. What do we know about the man who has been arrested?
:11:20. > :11:25.He lives 52 and lives locally. An eyewitness had him shouting Britain
:11:26. > :11:30.first. He was brought to the ground by two police officers with armed
:11:31. > :11:34.officers standing by. This is presumed to be a reference to the
:11:35. > :11:41.far right organisation, Britain First. Not like you did have
:11:42. > :11:47.anything to do with the EU referendum campaign? It has been
:11:48. > :11:55.stopped as a mark of respect. Police would not speculate on any motive at
:11:56. > :11:58.the conference. Britain First have issued a statement saying that they
:11:59. > :12:04.had nothing to do with it and would never encourage behaviour of this
:12:05. > :12:09.sort. People have said it is the right thing to do to suspend the
:12:10. > :12:15.campaign in the middle of all this. Indeed, it is a mark of respect to
:12:16. > :12:22.Jo Cox. It will be a temporary suspension. Thank you. The tributes
:12:23. > :12:26.have been pouring in for Jo Cox to really was an incredibly popular
:12:27. > :12:31.local MP. I think this sums it up in many ways.
:12:32. > :12:33.Simple words from the Labour party leadership tonight about Jo Cox.
:12:34. > :12:35.The leader Jeremy Corbyn said she was a compassionate,
:12:36. > :12:40.principled, beautiful person, who championed human rights.
:12:41. > :12:43.Len Tingle now reports on the work of a woman popular on both sides
:12:44. > :12:56.One hour before news of her death was officially released, Jo Cox
:12:57. > :13:01.husband published this on social media. No worries, just a
:13:02. > :13:07.photograph. A personal memory. A reminder that Jo Cox was more than a
:13:08. > :13:11.Labour MP, she was also a wife and a mum. Juggling those responsibilities
:13:12. > :13:16.with her ambition to make a difference. She had worked for Oxfam
:13:17. > :13:22.and campaigned for women's right and refugees. It is just over a year
:13:23. > :13:27.before she entered the next phase of what was expected to be a
:13:28. > :13:35.substantial political career. She was elected MP of her hometown. I
:13:36. > :13:41.love all of you very much. Jeremy Corbyn called a halt to campaigning.
:13:42. > :13:46.All sides have followed his lead. We have lost a wonderful woman and a
:13:47. > :13:51.wonderful member of Parliament. Our democracy will go on and so will her
:13:52. > :14:04.work. As we mourn her memory will work in that memory. Melt everyone's
:14:05. > :14:12.thoughts are with Jo Cox family at this terrible time. Tributes have
:14:13. > :14:16.been flooding in from MPs of both sides of the house. It is not the
:14:17. > :14:28.first time that an MP has been attacked during or after holding a
:14:29. > :14:33.surgery. What we cannot allow to happen is first savagery of this
:14:34. > :14:40.kind to stop the democratic process of members of Parliament doing their
:14:41. > :14:43.job. That is what the public expect. Her husband issued a further
:14:44. > :14:49.statement urging all to fight against the hated that killed her.
:14:50. > :14:59.He said hate does not have a creed, race or religion. It is just
:15:00. > :15:06.poisonous. Remarkable tributes there to Jo Cox. Here are some people who
:15:07. > :15:12.knew her quite well. Here is a local MP. Tell me about Jo Cox. Today
:15:13. > :15:16.Parliament has lost a wonderful and inspirational MP and I have lost a
:15:17. > :15:24.great friend. People here have lost a great MP. She was only a member of
:15:25. > :15:28.parliament here for just over a year but made a huge difference in that
:15:29. > :15:32.time. When she spoke people listen to her like she had been there for
:15:33. > :15:37.years. She spoke with knowledge and passion about the things that
:15:38. > :15:40.mattered to her. Local issues in this area are about Syria,
:15:41. > :15:46.International development. Things that she knew so much about actor
:15:47. > :15:52.her successful career at Oxfam. She wanted to be a representative for
:15:53. > :15:56.the place that she grew up in and loves. She died doing the job she
:15:57. > :16:02.loved and representing the people she loved. A huge waste and a huge
:16:03. > :16:07.tragedy. You were an MP here are a few years ago. You're visibly upset
:16:08. > :16:11.about this. Lille I was really shocked. I was striving into the
:16:12. > :16:17.town at about 1:30pm and I heard it on the radio. I felt so shocked and
:16:18. > :16:21.six. I had to stop the car and switched off and try to digester I
:16:22. > :16:28.had just heard. I did not believe it. I can believe such a vibrant
:16:29. > :16:35.person had disappeared. She would have been great in Parliament. As
:16:36. > :16:38.our homemaker maiden speech and I listened carefully. She looked
:16:39. > :16:42.beautiful. I was impressed and I wrote to her and said, I heard your
:16:43. > :16:49.speech and your contact was brilliant. What you wrote you said
:16:50. > :16:54.you would do was very good and I wish you well. I think she is a
:16:55. > :17:00.great loss to Parliament and in particular to her family. Can I have
:17:01. > :17:04.the local vicar here, you knew her very well, didn't you? We did talk
:17:05. > :17:10.and I found her such a wonderful person. She was determined to help
:17:11. > :17:17.individuals and groups within the community. For that we supported
:17:18. > :17:22.her. The thing about it was that when you looked at her work before
:17:23. > :17:26.she was an MP, she was committed to human rights and Jankovic things
:17:27. > :17:30.better for people. She has been all over the world and has been to
:17:31. > :17:35.Afghanistan. It is ironic that she died here at home in a place that
:17:36. > :17:41.should have been safe. I knew her husband very well for a number of
:17:42. > :17:46.years. The children as well. It is such a tragedy to dig out of this
:17:47. > :17:50.world is such an amazing woman and politician. She was also a mother
:17:51. > :17:56.who had so much to look forward to and so much still to give. She will
:17:57. > :17:59.leave a legacy in just the 42 years that she left. Such a lasting
:18:00. > :18:03.legacy. If you think what she achieved in that short space of time
:18:04. > :18:09.she could have gone on to achieve so much more. In your commitment to
:18:10. > :18:15.public service do you think about it when this kind of thing happens as
:18:16. > :18:19.well? Of course. Today our thoughts and prayers are with her family and
:18:20. > :18:23.her husband, her parents and children. This is not the first time
:18:24. > :18:30.this has happened. There was another colleague of mine who was stabbed in
:18:31. > :18:37.his constituency surgery. We do need to think about how we do our jobs,
:18:38. > :18:41.but you cannot do the job of an MP unless you are in the heart of your
:18:42. > :18:44.community because you can't represent people if you put a buyer
:18:45. > :18:51.between yourself and the people you represent. The reason why Jo Cox was
:18:52. > :18:56.such an amazing MP is because she was rooted in the team unity that
:18:57. > :19:02.she loves. If you take the MP at the community then they can't do the
:19:03. > :19:05.job. But we need to think about safety when we're going about our
:19:06. > :19:12.business. Our thoughts are with her family today. Can Askew both about
:19:13. > :19:15.the community here. This is a great time and I have been here many
:19:16. > :19:23.times. It is an alien thing that has happened here. Well everyone rally
:19:24. > :19:31.round? The area that she represented was very communal and comes together
:19:32. > :19:36.well. I think she was gaining the respect already by what she was
:19:37. > :19:45.setting out to do. Unfortunately that has really been cut short. I
:19:46. > :19:49.can remember three or four times I had to have police presence at my
:19:50. > :19:54.surgeries because they knew who was coming. You can't think about that.
:19:55. > :20:03.You can't not go, you just get on with it. The community here is a
:20:04. > :20:07.strong community and I believe it will continue to be so. We're having
:20:08. > :20:12.a vigil at 8pm tonight in the church and expect a number of people to
:20:13. > :20:16.turn up. We're going to give people the opportunity to ASCII big
:20:17. > :20:20.questions, but also to have some quiet time in their own prayers and
:20:21. > :20:28.praying for the family and the whole community. We can get out of this
:20:29. > :20:34.and through this. Can we reflect on the first speech that she made. That
:20:35. > :20:39.is the nerve wracking speech that every new MP has to go through. What
:20:40. > :20:45.impression did she create with you? I knew her before she was an MP. I
:20:46. > :20:54.encouraged her to stand for Parliament, because I saw in her a
:20:55. > :20:58.real passion and vibrancy. She was so proud to represent the town where
:20:59. > :21:05.she grew up in and went to school in. Her parents are so here. It
:21:06. > :21:11.instilled in her a great pride and a huge responsibility to do right by
:21:12. > :21:19.the people she grew up with. She called debates in Parliament. On
:21:20. > :21:29.Syria, international development issues and people listened. In my
:21:30. > :21:33.first year as an MP I don't know if that even happened. People release
:21:34. > :21:37.that up and listens because she knew what she was talking about. She
:21:38. > :21:43.spoke with so much energy. We must not let that spirit and that energy
:21:44. > :22:04.die with Jo Cox. We must continue her work. Thank you Barry much.
:22:05. > :22:16.We are reacting to the death of the Labour MP Jo Cox. Jo Cox has been
:22:17. > :22:20.killed in the West Yorkshire constituency. All EU campaigning has
:22:21. > :22:24.been suspended as a mark of respect. She was attacked in the village of
:22:25. > :22:31.her skull early this afternoon. Eyewitnesses say she was shot and
:22:32. > :22:36.stabbed and later died of at Leeds General Infirmary. A 52-year-old man
:22:37. > :22:41.has been arrested. No motive has been established yet. This was the
:22:42. > :22:47.tribute from Jeremy Corbyn. The whole of the Labour family are
:22:48. > :22:52.devastated tonight. Jo Cox has been killed doing her duty, doing her
:22:53. > :22:57.work as a constituency MP. She is somebody who dedicated her life to
:22:58. > :23:02.human rights and justice. She worked for anti-slavery campaigns, she
:23:03. > :23:06.worked for Oxfam and she became an MP for the area where she was born
:23:07. > :23:11.and grew up and love. In Parliament she was respected across the whole
:23:12. > :23:15.house is somebody with a deep commitment and passion for human
:23:16. > :23:22.rights and justice. Sadly, today she died. She was killed on the streets
:23:23. > :23:28.of her constituency doing her duty as a local member of Parliament
:23:29. > :23:33.helping people. She leaves behind a husband, a wonderful man who,
:23:34. > :23:37.likewise, spends his life campaigning for human rights and
:23:38. > :23:41.justice. She leaves behind two young children, two young children who
:23:42. > :23:48.will never grow up to see the mum again. They can be proud of what she
:23:49. > :23:54.was, they can be proud of what she did and they can be very proud of
:23:55. > :23:59.everything that she stood for. We come together at a time like this,
:24:00. > :24:04.we come together to support the family and to mourn and reflect that
:24:05. > :24:09.violence is not an answer, it is not an answer to anything. We need to
:24:10. > :24:15.come together and express our deepest condolences to Jo and her
:24:16. > :24:19.family. We have lost a wonderful woman, a wonderful member of
:24:20. > :24:25.Parliament, but our democracy will go on. Her work will go on as we
:24:26. > :24:27.mourn her memory we will work in her memory to achieve that better world
:24:28. > :24:33.she spent her life trying to achieve. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour
:24:34. > :24:39.Party leader. This is how David Cameron react to the news. This is
:24:40. > :24:44.absolutely tragic and dreadful news and my thoughts are with Jo's,
:24:45. > :24:51.Brendan, their two children and her wider family. We have lost a great
:24:52. > :24:56.start. She was an MP, a great campaigning MP, with huge
:24:57. > :24:59.compassion, Descartes and people are going to be very, very sad that what
:25:00. > :25:05.has happened. Dreadful, dreadful news. It is right that we are
:25:06. > :25:09.suspending campaigning at liberty in this referendum and everyone's
:25:10. > :25:13.thoughts will reap with her family had her constituent of this terrible
:25:14. > :25:17.time. There has been an outpouring of grief and tributes for the kind
:25:18. > :25:23.of person she was. What did you know of her? I know she was a very strong
:25:24. > :25:27.campaigning MP. She had a great track record of caring for refugees
:25:28. > :25:31.and took a big interest in how they could look after Syrian refugees and
:25:32. > :25:36.the right thing to do in our world. She had a key chart, compassionate,
:25:37. > :25:41.caring MP. She was a bright start, no doubt about it. She was A* right
:25:42. > :25:45.across the house and we have lost the start, but above all I am

:25:50. > :25:52.constituents who will be feeling this huge sense of loss tonight and
:25:53. > :25:58.I think it is right we stop the campaigning activity as we think of
:25:59. > :26:02.them and what they have lost. Theresa May made this statement a
:26:03. > :26:08.short time ago. The full details of what happened outside Jo's
:26:09. > :26:12.constituency surgery in Birstall this afternoon are not yet clear and
:26:13. > :26:17.until the fact sat been fully established I will not comment
:26:18. > :26:23.further. It is entirely appropriate that all campaigning for the
:26:24. > :26:28.referendum has been suspended. All of us are united in our deep sadness
:26:29. > :26:39.at the loss of one of our brightest and most popular Westminster
:26:40. > :26:42.colleagues. Thank you. Theresa May. The West Yorkshire Police have made
:26:43. > :26:53.a statement about the death of Jo Cox. Jo was attacked by a man who
:26:54. > :26:58.inflicted fatal injuries. Subsequently, there was a further
:26:59. > :27:02.attack on a 77-year-old man nearby who has sustained injuries that are
:27:03. > :27:07.not life-threatening. Shortly afterwards, a man was arrested
:27:08. > :27:14.nearby by local uniformed police officers. Weapons including a
:27:15. > :27:19.firearm have also been recovered. At 1:48pm Jo Cox was pronounced
:27:20. > :27:23.deceased by a doctor working with a paramedic crew who were attending to
:27:24. > :27:26.her serious injuries. This is a very significant investigation with large
:27:27. > :27:30.numbers of witnesses that have been spoken to by police at this time.
:27:31. > :27:37.There is a large and significant crime scene and there was a large
:27:38. > :27:39.police presence in the area. A full investigation is underway to
:27:40. > :27:47.establish the motive for this attack. There are specifically
:27:48. > :27:53.trained officers with Jo's immediate family who are fully aware of what
:27:54. > :27:56.has taken place and we would ask the media to respect their privacy at
:27:57. > :27:59.this very difficult time. Additional officers are working in the local
:28:00. > :28:04.community this afternoon and evening in order to provide reassurance and
:28:05. > :28:10.support our communities. Clearly, as this enquiry is at an early stage
:28:11. > :28:17.and we have an individual under arrest, we are not in a position to
:28:18. > :28:20.discuss motive at this time. We are not looking for anyone else in
:28:21. > :28:30.connection with this incident at present. We will be getting more
:28:31. > :28:36.reaction to the death of Jo Cox from her constituency where she was
:28:37. > :28:37.attacked this afternoon. Let's just pause for a moment and look at the
:28:38. > :28:46.weather forecast. Drier weather for the weekend could
:28:47. > :28:51.not come soon enough, particularly as we saw another day like this in
:28:52. > :28:55.Worcestershire, heavy showers for many. The day started off with a few
:28:56. > :28:59.showers but they generated across England and Wales, some of them
:29:00. > :29:03.really quite heavy. More persistent rain into Northern Ireland and
:29:04. > :29:05.Scotland at times and it felt quite cool here. Some of those showers
:29:06. > :29:10.will ease through the night but some keep going and it is going to be a
:29:11. > :29:15.pretty murky night with a lot of low cloud again and some patchy fog
:29:16. > :29:20.first thing. Temperature sticking at between nine and 14 degrees. There
:29:21. > :29:24.will be outbreaks of brain from the word go. Elsewhere, we will see some
:29:25. > :29:28.showers which will become more widespread, more sharp and thundery
:29:29. > :29:32.potentially into the south-east corner as we go through the second
:29:33. > :29:38.half of the day. Some of them heavy again potentially leading to
:29:39. > :29:40.localised flooding. 17 to 19 degrees the high here, cooler up north with
:29:41. > :29:41.highs of just
