:00:00. > :00:11.We hear how one family's loss has sparked a campaign to get more men

:00:12. > :00:22.I didn't want to speak out to anyone.

:00:23. > :00:25.And it got to a point where I were going to dark places,

:00:26. > :00:28.and it wasn't places where I wanted to be.

:00:29. > :00:30.Also tonight: Campaigners lose their legal battle to prevent

:00:31. > :00:38.Is York prepared for the floods of the future?

:00:39. > :00:40.They've had a year to put things right.

:00:41. > :00:49.And how a present from Santa inspired one little girl to help

:00:50. > :00:57.And it's been a quiet day with most of seeing some decent sunny

:00:58. > :01:07.But we have got some unsettled and potentially disruptive weather in

:01:08. > :01:15.the run-up to Christmas. I will be back later with more.

:01:16. > :01:17.First tonight, the growing problem of men in Yorkshire

:01:18. > :01:27.430 men killed themselves in Yorkshire last year.

:01:28. > :01:30.That's an increase of almost 17% on the previous year.

:01:31. > :01:32.Yorkshire has the highest rate of male suicides in England.

:01:33. > :01:35.And suicide is the largest single cause of death of men

:01:36. > :01:51.Halifax Rugby League player Luke Ambler has set himself the goal

:01:52. > :01:53.of halving the suicide rate in five years after his brother-in-law

:01:54. > :01:56.He started Andy's Man Club, named after his

:01:57. > :02:00.There are now five of them across the north of England.

:02:01. > :02:02.Andy's mum Elaine starts this report from Tanya Arnold.

:02:03. > :02:06.I was upstairs and there was a knock on the door and I just thought

:02:07. > :02:08.it was a delivery man, and saw this yellow jacket,

:02:09. > :02:11.so I went to the door and it was a policeman.

:02:12. > :02:14.And as soon as I saw him, I knew, I knew.

:02:15. > :02:20.And he went, yes, I'm sorry, there has been a death.

:02:21. > :02:26.I know he was having problems seeing his little girl,

:02:27. > :02:28.but we would have solved that, we would have resolved it.

:02:29. > :02:31.He was talking to his sister about it in a jovial manner,

:02:32. > :02:35.so she knew he was having those problems, but we never knew how much

:02:36. > :02:44.it was actually getting to him, no idea whatsoever.

:02:45. > :02:47.It was in April that Andy Roberts took his life

:02:48. > :02:50.in this wood in Halifax, and it is on that date his

:02:51. > :02:52.brother-in-law, Luke Ambler, decided he had to try

:02:53. > :02:56.I just realised that that point that nothing we could do

:02:57. > :02:59.would bring the back, and all the little things that day,

:03:00. > :03:01.having to bring people and tell people, I just remember

:03:02. > :03:10.the destruction and the complete devastation.

:03:11. > :03:13.Luke started with the campaign It's OK To Talk, and the first

:03:14. > :03:15.Andy's Man Club opened in Halifax five months ago.

:03:16. > :03:20.These men agreed to talk to us about why they went.

:03:21. > :03:23.I had broken up with my ex-girlfriend, who's

:03:24. > :03:30.I wasn't seeing him every day anymore.

:03:31. > :03:33.My mum passed away in April this year, unexpectedly.

:03:34. > :03:35.I spoke to her at five o'clock one night, by seven o'clock

:03:36. > :03:39.I didn't have anywhere to live for about eight months.

:03:40. > :03:43.It came to about February this year, I got my own place, and just

:03:44. > :03:45.as I was settling in, a few of my friends died.

:03:46. > :03:49.There was about three of them in the space of a couple of months.

:03:50. > :03:56.And it really, really took its toll on me.

:03:57. > :03:58.I thought I could fight it alone I didn't want

:03:59. > :04:02.It got to a point where I was going to dark places,

:04:03. > :04:06.and they weren't places where I wanted to be.

:04:07. > :04:08.I'm not always going to be feeling like that.

:04:09. > :04:13.Everyone's story is different, but there are common themes.

:04:14. > :04:16.I'm meant to be this role model to my children,

:04:17. > :04:19.and we try and bottle everything up, because we don't want to pass

:04:20. > :04:22.After just a few weeks, the benefits are clear.

:04:23. > :04:24.It's had a really positive effect on my life.

:04:25. > :04:27.I've went back to work within a couple of weeks

:04:28. > :04:33.Going through that door knowing there's 20, 30 other men that

:04:34. > :04:35.are going through similar things to what I'm going through

:04:36. > :04:38.and emotions I'm feeling, and know that there's always someone

:04:39. > :04:44.Everybody has problems, and you can't bottle them up.

:04:45. > :04:47.You need to get it off your chest, otherwise you'll just explode.

:04:48. > :04:57.We've had knocking on 200 men now across this groups.

:04:58. > :04:59.So that could potentially be 200 brothers, dads,

:05:00. > :05:01.uncles, sons, cousins, best friends that are still here

:05:02. > :05:15.Now let's talk to Bob Howe from the Samaritans.

:05:16. > :05:21.Now let's talk to Bob Howe from the Samaritans.

:05:22. > :05:28.So refreshing to hear men talk, something they don't do enough.

:05:29. > :05:33.Indeed, we are notoriously bad at it. Women are usually better at this

:05:34. > :05:41.sort of thing. Do you think that is what Andy's Man Club has struck a

:05:42. > :05:48.chord with? There are calls all over the world to open more centres, is

:05:49. > :05:53.it really as simple as getting men to talk? It really is, we find that

:05:54. > :05:57.with callers to the Samaritans, if we can get them to start to talk,

:05:58. > :06:00.the floodgates can open and they can find that they are unleashing

:06:01. > :06:05.emotions they almost didn't know they had, and it becomes easier. Is

:06:06. > :06:09.this the first time, the build-up to everybody enjoying themselves and

:06:10. > :06:16.then maybe the Lyell afterwards? Christmas can be a very false time

:06:17. > :06:20.for people, they have to put a false face on the situation, and sadly New

:06:21. > :06:24.Year often dawns on us as a very bleak time, particularly with credit

:06:25. > :06:29.card bills kicking in. Is very particular man that is most at risk

:06:30. > :06:33.of taking their own life? Young men we have the biggest problem with,

:06:34. > :06:38.and the pressures on them over the years have been accentuated. There

:06:39. > :06:42.is this feel that we have to provide, we have to be the person

:06:43. > :06:48.that provides for the family, and perhaps if they have had problems,

:06:49. > :06:52.just maybe from a bereavement, it may be financial, it may be

:06:53. > :06:55.relationship, the pressures feel great on them, and the fact that

:06:56. > :07:05.they don't open up on top, it build-up inside. As a society, do we

:07:06. > :07:08.shy away from this taboo subject? ES, and people can get to where they

:07:09. > :07:12.feel there is no other option than to take their own life, it is still

:07:13. > :07:16.the biggest taboo there is. But we are getting better at talking, we

:07:17. > :07:19.have a lot of male role models coming out talking about how they

:07:20. > :07:23.have suffered with mental health problems. We have been very pleased

:07:24. > :07:29.to see over the last two or three years some big names in sport, some

:07:30. > :07:32.sportsmen coming out and saying, I suffered depression, I have had

:07:33. > :07:37.mental health problems, I have gone through trauma and I have come out

:07:38. > :07:41.and said, we need to talk and start talking more, and they are good role

:07:42. > :07:46.models for the younger men. And those who do need support, what

:07:47. > :07:50.would your advice be to them? From our perspective, pick up the phone

:07:51. > :07:55.and talk to us. It has been said to three times on the trip tonight, and

:07:56. > :08:01.we run a campaign every July, it is OK to talk, and it may be difficult,

:08:02. > :08:04.it is very difficult the first time to pick up the phone and talk to

:08:05. > :08:08.Samaritans, but once you have done that, it is easy, because you will

:08:09. > :08:12.have someone at the end of the phone who is going to give you time and

:08:13. > :08:14.space, it is anonymous and confidential, there is no rush. Bob,

:08:15. > :08:20.thank you. Thank you. Next tonight: Campaigners from North Yorkshire

:08:21. > :08:22.have lost a legal challenge against one of the first planning

:08:23. > :08:24.applications to carry out The High Court has

:08:25. > :08:28.dismissed an application for a judicial review of a decision

:08:29. > :08:31.to allow the company, Third Energy, to frack for shale gas

:08:32. > :08:34.at a site at Kirby Misperton. The county council welcomed

:08:35. > :08:36.the decision but campaigners said Anti-fracking campaigners from

:08:37. > :08:43.Kirby Misperton took their fight Today's news that their challenge

:08:44. > :08:51.to the planning approval had failed was not the festive message they had

:08:52. > :08:54.been hoping for. Obviously it has been quite

:08:55. > :09:04.a long battle for us, and a lot of detailed research has

:09:05. > :09:07.gone into what we think were very good grounds for bringing

:09:08. > :09:13.this judicial review. This is the site at the centre

:09:14. > :09:17.of the concerns, nestled in fields not far from the village of Kirby

:09:18. > :09:20.Misperton. It's here that Third Energy wants

:09:21. > :09:28.to extract shale gas. To get the gas out of the shale

:09:29. > :09:31.rock that's underground, water and chemicals are pumped down,

:09:32. > :09:33.and the gas pumped out. People living near here are worried

:09:34. > :09:36.about the environmental impact and the long-term effects

:09:37. > :09:38.on their health. Third Energy, the company behind

:09:39. > :09:41.the plans, insists it's a safe and regulated process

:09:42. > :09:46.which will bring benefits locally. We already employ around 25 people

:09:47. > :10:03.locally, and the likelihood is in the future if the operations

:10:04. > :10:06.are expanded there will be more jobs, there will be

:10:07. > :10:08.more apprentice schemes. So there will be significant

:10:09. > :10:10.benefit to the community. North Yorkshire County Council,

:10:11. > :10:11.who granted planning permission for fracking,

:10:12. > :10:13.welcomed the decision of the judicial review,

:10:14. > :10:16.and said they had a responsibility to apply national and local policies

:10:17. > :10:19.and had followed a statutory process which the High Court found

:10:20. > :10:21.was followed correctly. Even though today's legal

:10:22. > :10:23.challenge failed, campaigners We are not going to be changing our

:10:24. > :10:31.mind that this is a great idea. So the bottom line is,

:10:32. > :10:34.we are opposed to further We are looking to the future,

:10:35. > :10:40.which unfortunately we don't While campaigners plan

:10:41. > :10:43.their next moves, preparation Abi Jaiyeola, BBC Look

:10:44. > :10:52.North, Kirby Misperton. Still on the way before seven:

:10:53. > :10:55.The show's on the road. We'll meet the Yorkshire woman

:10:56. > :10:58.touring Europe with a mobile cinema West Yorkshire Police say

:10:59. > :11:17.there are plans in place to protect public events over Christmas,

:11:18. > :11:19.in the wake of last night's 12 people were killed when a lorry

:11:20. > :11:23.ploughed into a crowd The force says it's considered

:11:24. > :11:26.a range of threats, They also say they recognise the

:11:27. > :11:35.current terror threat is 'severe'. A strike by bagagge handlers

:11:36. > :11:37.at Leeds Bradford and Doncaster Workers had been due

:11:38. > :11:41.to walkout in the run up to Christmas as part

:11:42. > :11:43.of a long-running dispute over pay. Today it was announced the Unite

:11:44. > :11:45.union announced action South Yorkshire police

:11:46. > :11:52.have arrested two men after a body was found

:11:53. > :11:55.in Lawton On Le Morthen The body of a 47-year-old man

:11:56. > :11:58.was discovered at a house in Kingswood Avenue

:11:59. > :12:00.on Sunday afternoon. His identity hasn't yet

:12:01. > :12:02.been released but his The two men who have been arrested

:12:03. > :12:06.are in their twenties. Two controversial planning

:12:07. > :12:08.applications for greenbelt in Leeds, which would have helped pay

:12:09. > :12:10.for the redevelopment of Headingley stadium,

:12:11. > :12:12.have been withdrawn. Leeds Rhinos had wanted to sell this

:12:13. > :12:16.land at Tetley Fields and a site in Tingley in order

:12:17. > :12:20.to fund work on the south stand, but the plans were met with fierce

:12:21. > :12:24.opposition from campaigners. Today the Rhinos and Yorkshire

:12:25. > :12:27.County Cricket Club say the applications have been dropped

:12:28. > :12:29.but they're still hopeful a solution to their funding

:12:30. > :12:36.problem can be found. Now we turn to the second

:12:37. > :12:41.of our special reports looking at the legacy

:12:42. > :12:44.of the Boxing Day floods. This time, we're in York which saw

:12:45. > :12:46.six hundred properties flooded. The damage was so severe

:12:47. > :12:51.because the system to manage York's two rivers -

:12:52. > :12:54.the Ouse and the Fosse - went wrong. This is the beast that should have

:12:55. > :13:02.protected York, the Fosse Barrier. It's situated where York's two

:13:03. > :13:11.rivers meet, the mighty Ouse over there and this

:13:12. > :13:13.smaller river, the Foss. Now, when it rains, the Ouse

:13:14. > :13:16.fills up, and it starts to flow up this channel,

:13:17. > :13:18.and that's where It's like an enormous garage

:13:19. > :13:21.door that swings down and blocks this channel,

:13:22. > :13:23.and prevents that Ouse water from flowing up

:13:24. > :13:25.and flooding houses upstream. What do we do with all this water

:13:26. > :13:29.that still coming down? They are housed in this building

:13:30. > :13:38.here, the control building, and they take that water

:13:39. > :13:41.from the Foss and they pump it over the wall and into the Ouse

:13:42. > :13:43.where it flows downstream. Now, on Boxing Day, all that

:13:44. > :13:46.happened as it should. The water found a weakness

:13:47. > :13:52.in the foundations of the control building, and it started to come up

:13:53. > :13:54.through the floor. The engineers inside realised

:13:55. > :13:56.they had a problem. It was going to take

:13:57. > :13:59.out their control panel, and with it the electricity supply

:14:00. > :14:01.not only to the pumps Stand and watch the pumps fail

:14:02. > :14:15.and watch all the Foss water flood the houses upstream,

:14:16. > :14:18.or lift the barrier and let the Ouse Which was going to be

:14:19. > :14:22.the lesser of the two evils? In the end, they raised the barrier,

:14:23. > :14:25.and that decision has been And what could be done to prevent it

:14:26. > :14:30.all happening again? One year on, that's

:14:31. > :14:32.what I've been finding out. The pictures show

:14:33. > :14:33.the awful consequences Home after home wrecked,

:14:34. > :14:38.businesses and lives disrupted, No one wants to see this again,

:14:39. > :15:08.so the beleaguered barrier Eight new pumps

:15:09. > :15:10.arrived in September. They can shift nearly double

:15:11. > :15:13.the water of the old ones. The pumping station now

:15:14. > :15:17.works to a lot higher capacity than what it did,

:15:18. > :15:20.and knowing that it can handle the sort of floods

:15:21. > :15:22.that we had last year, that should give people a great

:15:23. > :15:25.sense of relief coming Certainly within five years,

:15:26. > :15:28.when we have finished the works in York, I would have thought York

:15:29. > :15:31.is probably one of the best Emergency power generators have also

:15:32. > :15:34.been installed and raised up out of harm's way,

:15:35. > :15:37.and York has been given ?45 million by the Government

:15:38. > :15:39.to make further defences. It's reassuring news

:15:40. > :15:41.for the residents of Huntingdon Huntingdon Road, who are just

:15:42. > :15:43.about returning to normal. Back in March, Tony was making

:15:44. > :15:45.new skirting boards But he's not really

:15:46. > :15:49.sitting comfortably. What he has been

:15:50. > :15:51.through leaves a mark. It's going to be a very quiet

:15:52. > :15:54.Christmas, because the forecast for the weather is reasonable,

:15:55. > :15:56.and they have got the new pumps, so we should be all right this

:15:57. > :15:59.Christmas, but it's the Christmas after that and the Christmas

:16:00. > :16:02.after that until the flood defences for the whole of York

:16:03. > :16:04.and the River Ouse have been implemented, then

:16:05. > :16:14.we are all on borrowed time. An examination of how the city coped

:16:15. > :16:16.highlighted its vulnerability to climate change, but it also noted

:16:17. > :16:23.the city's resilience. Its precious heritage has survived

:16:24. > :16:28.for centuries, and continues The undercroft of the Merchant

:16:29. > :16:36.Adventurers' Hall was inundated It is now dry, but it is damaged,

:16:37. > :16:48.and needs restoration. We had dryers operating

:16:49. > :16:50.in the undercroft from mid-January, as soon as the drying company

:16:51. > :16:53.could get here, until We have now decided that the walls

:16:54. > :16:56.are sufficiently dry, and the next step is to repaint

:16:57. > :16:59.the walls in the undercroft. Where we are standing now,

:17:00. > :17:02.the 17th-century pews around us have been damaged by the floodwaters,

:17:03. > :17:04.and so we have a programme of restoration on those

:17:05. > :17:06.ongoing at the moment, I'm hoping by the summer of 2017

:17:07. > :17:10.that everything will be behind us, and the only evidence

:17:11. > :17:12.will be the photographs. In the meantime, the venue is open

:17:13. > :17:16.for weddings and events. The floods, for now, consigned

:17:17. > :17:20.to the hall's very long history. An independent report

:17:21. > :17:21.on York's floods is due to be published soon,

:17:22. > :17:39.so maybe that, too, will provide And tomorrow we will be looking at

:17:40. > :17:46.how Todmorden and with Freud are coping when you run from the floods.

:17:47. > :17:49.Seeing children in refugee camps abroad can make many of us feel

:17:50. > :17:53.But our next guest has taken action to bring some peace and escapism

:17:54. > :17:56.Shireen Farkhoy from Leeds, together with her friend

:17:57. > :17:58.William Johnson from Huddersfield, have bought a mobile cinema

:17:59. > :18:01.which they've taken to Europe to play films for refugee families

:18:02. > :18:04.Since then they've brought a few hours of entertainment

:18:05. > :18:06.to more than five hundred refugees in Greece.

:18:07. > :18:24.Will and I used to live together, and we spent a lot of time having

:18:25. > :18:27.cups of tea and talking about the world and feeling overwhelmed by it

:18:28. > :18:33.all, and we wanted to do something positive. He is an artist and I am

:18:34. > :18:44.an actress, so we thought we would do something together. Look at them,

:18:45. > :18:47.they are just transfixed by it. It is the magic of that suddenly just

:18:48. > :18:52.going from being chaotic and running around and then being suddenly

:18:53. > :18:56.gormless, that is the effect we wanted to transport them. And you

:18:57. > :19:01.are giving them some real joy in their life, because it is tough. You

:19:02. > :19:07.think that Greece is a warm country, but in the winter, it is cold. And a

:19:08. > :19:10.lot of the times, the tents are brought into the warehouses, but

:19:11. > :19:14.there is no heating, they are not sleeping, they are crying all day,

:19:15. > :19:20.and the feedback we get is that the parents say thank you because you

:19:21. > :19:23.have given us a break. I have two young children the same age as some

:19:24. > :19:27.of those we see there, and you take for granted city them in front of

:19:28. > :19:34.the television and watching a cartoon is very normal, and we take

:19:35. > :19:37.it for granted. It was a gift to go there and do that and see their

:19:38. > :19:41.faces, which is why we want to carry on doing it for as long as we

:19:42. > :19:47.possibly can. And you are moving around? We are, we move from camp to

:19:48. > :19:51.camp, so we are in a sense of the moment and we want to do the islands

:19:52. > :19:54.next, which is why we want to raise more money. What kind of films are

:19:55. > :20:00.you talking about? Which do they like? We love the classic cartoons,

:21:25. > :21:30.Once Upon a Time there were two little girls from York who collected

:21:36. > :21:37.For the past four Christmases, 9-year-old twins Juliet

:21:38. > :21:39.and Ella have asked their school friends to donate a bear

:21:42. > :21:43.They came up with the idea after Juliet was diagnosed

:21:47. > :21:49.She woke up in hospital on Christmas morning to find a cuddly new friend

:22:41. > :22:42.So we were in York Hospital overnight, Juliet and I.

:22:43. > :22:47.And on Christmas morning, there was a bear outside

:22:48. > :22:49.Juliet's room, this bear, and it made a huge difference

:22:50. > :22:56.Juliet was only three years old at the time.

:22:57. > :22:59.Now, six years later, and after a long and successful

:23:00. > :23:01.recovery, Juliet and Ella wanted to give something

:23:02. > :23:11.So every year they invite their friends at the Archbishop

:23:12. > :23:13.of York Junior School to a "bring a bear" party.

:23:14. > :23:17.But little did they know just how many bears would turn up.

:23:18. > :23:19.We've got about 130 now, because my grandparents have got

:23:20. > :23:24.some, and we are getting sent from all over, teddy bears.

:23:25. > :23:30.And now the bears begin their own adventure,

:23:31. > :23:37.ready to meet their new owners at Leeds General Infirmary.

:23:38. > :23:41.It is very easy at Christmas to think, yes, it's Christmas,

:23:42. > :23:45.But what about the child who comes in in January?

:23:46. > :23:47.What about the child who comes in in July?

:23:48. > :23:49.They've still got their social needs, emotional needs

:23:50. > :23:57.And so having such a huge number of teddy bears like this just means

:23:58. > :24:00.that we can give them to children all year round and actually

:24:01. > :24:04.And with the bears safely delivered to their new home,

:24:05. > :24:06.the girls can take pride in knowing they have made other children

:24:07. > :24:23.Juliet and Ella, little angels. Well done. Let's move the weather. In

:24:24. > :24:27.that report from Cathy about York, the gentleman was worried about the

:24:28. > :24:30.weather, and we know that next weekend could be a bit dodgy. Is it

:24:31. > :24:46.developing at all, this storm? A couple of things. A lot of people

:24:47. > :24:50.are nervous at this time of year because there are often warnings

:24:51. > :24:57.out, but this warning is for wind, not rain, with storm Barbara, it is

:24:58. > :25:02.particularly because it is going to be high winds on Friday with so many

:25:03. > :25:09.people travelling. A couple of pictures to show you, the first is

:25:10. > :25:13.of the Bolton Abbey, moody skies above that there, and then the

:25:14. > :25:19.second picture, some winter sunshine in Keighley. We all pretty much got

:25:20. > :25:23.some sunshine through the course of today after that cloud broke up, and

:25:24. > :25:27.there will be bought over the next few days, it does look rather

:25:28. > :25:35.stormy. Keep your pictures coming in.

:25:36. > :25:43.So, my graphics have crashed, so we are going to do it all three of us.

:25:44. > :25:46.Tomorrow, a bit of a mixed bag of weather, some sunshine through the

:25:47. > :25:53.morning and then through the middle slice of the day, some showery rain.

:25:54. > :25:56.We start tomorrow with sunshine, there will be sunshine through the

:25:57. > :25:58.morning, and after a little damp weather overnight tonight, we start

:25:59. > :26:02.with some sunshine which will continue through the morning, and

:26:03. > :26:06.then through the middle portion of the day, showers tracking down from

:26:07. > :26:10.the north, so a little wet weather tomorrow, one or two heavy showers

:26:11. > :26:14.around and brisk winds, then it comes down to the afternoon and we

:26:15. > :26:18.have some pleasant weather to come. It will be a little milder than it

:26:19. > :26:26.has been, temperatures getting up to eight or nine Celsius. Looking a

:26:27. > :26:29.little further ahead from tomorrow onwards, Thursday looks very windy,

:26:30. > :26:35.we have a strong gusty Westerly, and across the tops of the Pennines, the

:26:36. > :26:40.Dales, it will be very blowy indeed, but a lot of sunshine around through

:26:41. > :26:45.Thursday, and then it is Friday when we are looking at Storm Barbara. The

:26:46. > :26:50.main part of the store will track across the North West of Scotland,

:26:51. > :26:56.there is an amber warning there, and Yorkshire has a yellow warning, so

:26:57. > :27:02.severe gales, meaning 60-70 mph gusts, which you can imagine could

:27:03. > :27:06.cause some problems. So potentially some damaging gusts, potentially

:27:07. > :27:12.some disruption to rail services, and that does slow things down if we

:27:13. > :27:15.get severe weather, and potentially even to bring some power lines down

:27:16. > :27:21.as well. Christmas weekend itself still looks windy, very windy still

:27:22. > :27:25.on Sunday but hopefully by then, people will be where they need to

:27:26. > :27:29.be, so it is definitely worth staying tuned to your local radio

:27:30. > :27:37.station. A lot of information over the next few days. So from Thursday

:27:38. > :27:40.onwards we need to be careful. Yes, and on Friday particularly, so my

:27:41. > :27:44.advice would be to set off before then.
