:00:18. > :00:20.in Nether Edge as one of its trees of the year.
:00:21. > :00:23.The council's review of 36,000 trees in the city has
:00:24. > :00:26.provoked an angry response, and even led to arrests.
:00:27. > :00:30.Trees are springing up all over Sheffield this month.
:00:31. > :00:32.In a few weeks, they'll be back in the loft.
:00:33. > :00:35.But it's the fate of those on the streets
:00:36. > :00:37.that has people worried, in particular
:00:38. > :00:40.that of this Huntingdon Elm on Chelsea Road.
:00:41. > :00:42.It's just been named as one of the Woodland Trust's
:00:43. > :00:46.trees of the year, but the council wants to cut it down.
:00:47. > :00:49.Campaigner Paul Selby nominated it for the award.
:00:50. > :00:53.The council 12 months ago just thought
:00:54. > :00:55.this was any old piece of wood for felling.
:00:56. > :00:58.Well, actually, it's one of the most important trees
:00:59. > :01:01.It's fought off Dutch elm disease at least twice
:01:02. > :01:03.that we know of and you cannot replace this tree.
:01:04. > :01:06.It's part of the International biological diversity
:01:07. > :01:10.that hopefully will help replant and repopulate the whole country
:01:11. > :01:15.In July, campaigners hired an open-top bus to
:01:16. > :01:20.Now the Woodland Trust is giving them ?500
:01:21. > :01:23.to be spent on the tree as a reward for its nomination.
:01:24. > :01:25.They'll get that in March, although, of course,
:01:26. > :01:32.Sheffield City Council has felled more than 3300 trees since 2012.
:01:33. > :01:35.The local authority had to apologise last month after
:01:36. > :01:38.council contractors started felling eight trees
:01:39. > :01:42.They woke residents and some of them were
:01:43. > :01:48.The council says many of the city's trees are old or diseased, dangerous
:01:49. > :01:51.or damaging the pavement and need to be cut down.
:01:52. > :01:55.Their plan is to replace every one they lose with a new,
:01:56. > :01:58.younger tree, but campaigners say this tree behind me and the rest
:01:59. > :02:05.across the city are special and need to be saved.
:02:06. > :02:08.Police say they're concerned for the safety of a teenager
:02:09. > :02:11.who went missing after going to meet a man in Leeds.
