:00:24. > :00:26.provoked an angry response, and even led to arrests.
:00:27. > :00:32.Trees are springing up all over Sheffield this month.
:00:33. > :00:35.In a few weeks, they'll be back in the loft.
:00:36. > :00:36.But it's the fate of those on the streets

:00:39. > :00:41.that of this Huntingdon Elm on Chelsea Road.
:00:42. > :00:44.It's just been named as one of the Woodland Trust's
:00:45. > :00:48.trees of the year, but the council wants to cut it down.
:00:49. > :00:51.Campaigner Paul Selby nominated it for the award.
:00:52. > :00:55.The council 12 months ago just thought
:00:56. > :00:57.this was any old piece of wood for felling.
:00:58. > :00:59.Well, actually, it's one of the most important trees
:01:00. > :01:02.It's fought off Dutch elm disease at least twice
:01:03. > :01:05.that we know of and you cannot replace this tree.
:01:06. > :01:07.It's part of the International biological diversity
:01:08. > :01:12.that hopefully will help replant and repopulate the whole country
:01:13. > :01:17.In July, campaigners hired an open-top bus to
:01:18. > :01:21.Now the Woodland Trust is giving them ?500
:01:22. > :01:25.to be spent on the tree as a reward for its nomination.
:01:26. > :01:27.They'll get that in March, although, of course,
:01:28. > :01:34.Sheffield City Council has felled more than 3300 trees since 2012.
:01:35. > :01:37.The local authority had to apologise last month after
:01:38. > :01:40.council contractors started felling eight trees
:01:41. > :01:44.They woke residents and some of them were
:01:45. > :01:50.The council says many of the city's trees are old or diseased, dangerous
:01:51. > :01:53.or damaging the pavement and need to be cut down.
:01:54. > :01:56.Their plan is to replace every one they lose with a new,
:01:57. > :02:00.younger tree, but campaigners say this tree behind me and the rest
:02:01. > :02:08.across the city are special and need to be saved.
:02:09. > :02:10.Police say they're concerned for the welfare of a teenager
