:00:18. > :00:24.But the Northern Powerhouse minister defended the progress made so far.

:00:25. > :00:28.For more than three years, the government has been talking

:00:29. > :00:30.about giving the economy a bit more punch

:00:31. > :00:33.by setting up something called the Northern Powerhouse.

:00:34. > :00:37.But, for parents and coaches at a boxing club

:00:38. > :00:41.in Knottingley Miners Welfare, it's an idea that has yet to hit home.

:00:42. > :00:44.If I was to say to you, the words Northern Powerhouse

:00:45. > :00:49.To be honest, it's a term, I've never heard of it.

:00:50. > :00:52.I've never heard of it, at all. Until tonight.

:00:53. > :00:55.If I was to say to you, it's being pushed by the government.

:00:56. > :00:57.It began by the Osborne-Cameron government to boost

:00:58. > :01:01.As I say, I've never heard it before.

:01:02. > :01:04.I've never seen any finances, in this direction.

:01:05. > :01:07.People here have been hit by a series of body blows.

:01:08. > :01:11.Ferrybridge C power station has gone, as has killing the colliery

:01:12. > :01:15.and council cuts are beginning to bite as the local pool

:01:16. > :01:22.Unemployment has been falling, unemployment is at

:01:23. > :01:24.record low levels in many parts of the North.

:01:25. > :01:26.We've got massive amounts of foreign investment coming in,

:01:27. > :01:29.running at twice the national average, so it's having an impact.

:01:30. > :01:31.People don't need to be au fait with the Northern Powerhouse strategy.

:01:32. > :01:34.What's important is they see the results.

:01:35. > :01:39.So, do business leaders feel a bit brighter about the Powerhouse plan

:01:40. > :01:42.to help hard-hit areas by building and linking economies

:01:43. > :01:46.If you get the rail system working better

:01:47. > :01:49.and you get connectivity with roads and other public transport systems.

:01:50. > :01:53.And the whole system works better from

:01:54. > :01:58.then the whole thing starts to look like a compelling place

:01:59. > :02:03.Back in Knottingley, there is no immediate lift from the

:02:04. > :02:06.high-speed rail plans but people are hoping a knock on effect isn't

:02:07. > :02:15.A memorial has been unveiled in honour of three family members

:02:16. > :02:18.who were murdered at their home in West Yorkshire last year.

:02:19. > :02:20.Gerry Newman, her 11-year-old daughter Shannon

:02:21. > :02:23.and six-year-old son Shane were killed by their father Paul.

:02:24. > :02:26.He was later discovered dead at cliffs near Anglesey.

:02:27. > :02:30.He'd been previously jailed for domestic violence.

:02:31. > :02:32.In the community and as part of the parish council,

:02:33. > :02:35.they wanted to create a lasting tribute that was fitting

:02:36. > :02:38.for the family where family members, ex-colleagues of Gerry,

:02:39. > :02:41.and friends and family members can come down

:02:42. > :02:42.and pay their respects to the memorial.

:02:43. > :02:45.It's absolutely brilliant. We think it's fantastic.

:02:46. > :02:47.We're really proud of it. It's a nice memorial for them.

:02:48. > :02:52.They were fantastic. The kids and Gerry were wonderful.

:03:21. > :03:23.The former World Champion helped children at Barnsley Gymnastics Club

:03:24. > :03:28.More than 100 local children turned up to meet her.

:03:29. > :03:34.It is important for children to do physical activity,

:03:35. > :03:39.sport has taught me so much which I am using in everyday life.

:03:40. > :03:41.Everything from motivation to determination.

:03:42. > :03:45.The simple things, having friends, having that social circle.

:03:46. > :03:48.Gymnastics has given me so much throughout my career and I just

:03:49. > :03:51.wanted to inspire the younger generation.
