:00:20. > :00:26.It won't be such a straightforward journey for train passengers

:00:27. > :00:30.tomorrow, when the members of the RMT strike.

:00:31. > :00:33.The union are concerned about plans to change the role of guards -

:00:34. > :00:37.currently they open and close doors when a train arrives at a station,

:00:38. > :00:41.but Arriva North want a driver to do that on their own.

:00:42. > :00:44.We believe that having a second person on all trains provides

:00:45. > :00:46.assurances to the travelling public, and it's an additional safety

:00:47. > :00:49.measure in the event that the driver becomes incapacitated.

:00:50. > :00:52.If you are trying to get from Bradford Forster Square

:00:53. > :00:55.into Leeds for a 9am start tomorrow, you might just make it.

:00:56. > :01:00.If you are coming home after work, then your last train

:01:01. > :01:06.But if you need to get home after work from Bradford to Ilkley,

:01:07. > :01:12.The advice to passengers is to make alternative arrangements if you can,

:01:13. > :01:17.It is a similar picture at stations across Yorkshire.

:01:18. > :01:19.More than 1,000 services are cancelled.

:01:20. > :01:24.There will be no services before 7am, and the last trains on most

:01:25. > :01:29.They have got to get to work, the commuters,

:01:30. > :01:32.and I understand them being upset, but what else can they do?

:01:33. > :01:35.How are they going to get their voice heard?

:01:36. > :01:37.It is not good for these people in general.

:01:38. > :01:41.It will affect most of the activities that are going on.

:01:42. > :01:45.For me, I think it is not the right decision, really.

:01:46. > :01:47.If there are no guards, who will help them?

:01:48. > :01:49.Who will be there with the passengers?

:01:50. > :01:53.So, for public safety, it is better to have the guards there.

:01:54. > :01:56.That is the issue that has sparked this dispute,

:01:57. > :02:05.but Arriva North see drivers can operate doors safely on their own.

:02:06. > :02:08.We put safety at the heart of everything that we do.

:02:09. > :02:10.The Independent Rail Regulator has actually indicated that this

:02:11. > :02:12.is as safe as conductor operation of the doors.

:02:13. > :02:15.A tricky commute ahead for passengers tomorrow,

:03:04. > :03:06.A colourful convoy of banners, bands and floats took to the streets

:03:07. > :03:09.for a day of "Leeds Going Irish", with celebrations continuing

:03:10. > :03:17.The first St Patrick's Day parade to be held in Leeds was back in 1999.

:03:18. > :03:19.It's estimated 20,000 people in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

:03:20. > :03:22.are now volunteering for their local authority,

:03:23. > :03:26.as funding cuts in the region hit the ?2 billion mark.

:03:27. > :03:30.So, does this mean the idea of a Big Society is alive and well?

:03:31. > :03:34.Ask not what your country can do for you -

:03:35. > :03:36.ask what you can do for your country.

:03:37. > :03:40.A bold statement from David Cameron back in 2010, but, seven years on,

:03:41. > :03:46.Welcome to Lower Wharfedale in North Yorkshire, where volunteers

:03:47. > :03:51.We know that, you know, councils are suffering at the moment,

:03:52. > :03:56.but even when there were good times, we volunteered to help.

:03:57. > :03:59.The council cuts meant the closure of the Stocksbridge Leisure Centre

:04:00. > :04:03.near Sheffield, but it was saved by a group of very dedicated people,

:04:04. > :04:05.many giving up their time while retired,

:04:06. > :04:09.and, as the working age increases, there are concerns

:04:10. > :04:15.It is a concern, so we try always to think of how we can, sort of,

:04:16. > :04:19.bring younger people in and get younger people involved.

:04:20. > :04:22.Three days of paid volunteering leave was pledged by

:04:23. > :04:27.the Conservatives in 2015, so is that the answer?

:04:28. > :04:30.I don't think the Government is ever going to say to an employer,

:04:31. > :04:33.you must free people up for three days to make this work,

:04:34. > :04:36.so I think it's always going to be something which is around

:04:37. > :04:39.encouragement and carrots rather than sticks.

:04:40. > :04:41.The concern is that, unless the Government

:04:42. > :04:43.backs up its pledge, community groups will be left

:04:44. > :04:48.to pick up the pieces with a diminishing pool of volunteers.

:04:49. > :04:54.On to Super League, Wakefield won a tight match against Salford 24-22.
