:00:57. > :00:59.Good evening, welcome to Thursday's Midlands Today from the BBC.
:00:59. > :01:01.Tonight, police describe accusations they're to blame for
:01:01. > :01:07.trouble at demonstrations by the English Defence League as
:01:07. > :01:10."ludicrous". A spokesman for the group - which says it campaigns
:01:10. > :01:14.against what it calls "militant Islam" - made the claims in an
:01:14. > :01:18.interview with BBC WM's Hard Talk programme. It follows a series of
:01:18. > :01:25.street protests in the region, some of them ending in violent clashes.
:01:25. > :01:33.Peter Wilson has this report. Guramit Singh, a property developer
:01:33. > :01:36.from Nottingham, also an organiser for the English Defence League.
:01:36. > :01:40.Seen here at a protest in Nuneaton. Born a Sikh, he says the strong
:01:40. > :01:44.line by the EDL on Muslim extremism attracted him to the movement. Last
:01:44. > :01:54.year he organised protests in Dudley which ended in violence. He
:01:54. > :02:01.blames only the police. It was the fault of West Midlands police. The
:02:01. > :02:04.English Defence League will not take any responsibility. It ended a
:02:04. > :02:08.complete upheaval. That is what they expected and that is what they
:02:08. > :02:10.wanted. At Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent, in Nuneaton in Warwickshire and
:02:11. > :02:20.Birmingham in the West Midlands, EDL protests have degenerated into
:02:20. > :02:25.violence. Police say Mr Singh's allegations are nonsense. It is
:02:25. > :02:34.patently a ludicrous claim. We did not throw bricks the or barriers.
:02:34. > :02:39.We were there to facilitate a peaceful protest. When somebody
:02:39. > :02:42.steps that -- broke the law, we were robust. Guramit Singh made a
:02:42. > :02:45.number of claims in his interview with BBC WM's Hard Talk programme.
:02:45. > :02:54.Although giving no specific figures, he says the West Midlands is now a
:02:54. > :02:59.stronghold for EDL support in the UK. It is probably our biggest area.
:02:59. > :03:06.They have flourished so much it is amazing. In Nottingham we take
:03:06. > :03:10.several coaches. I have been two areas in the West Midlands which a
:03:10. > :03:13.minute by comparison. In Dudley I met the local Muslim leader,
:03:13. > :03:16.Khurshid Ahmed, at an exhibition of the town's multi-faith culture. He
:03:16. > :03:20.says Mr Singh appears to be ignorant of his own Sikh religion
:03:20. > :03:30.as well as Islam, and he says the choice of an Asian leader by the
:03:30. > :03:30.
:03:30. > :03:35.EDL is merely tactical. I think it is a ploy. I think the media have
:03:35. > :03:41.made him the leader of a cranky group. I do not regard the English
:03:42. > :03:47.Defence League as being anything other than the English offence late.
:03:47. > :03:50.Because they do all found. -- lead. There have been calls to
:03:50. > :03:53.excommunicate Mr Singh from the Sikh religion. In Birmingham I
:03:53. > :03:58.spoke to a religious leader who gave me this statement. He said all
:03:58. > :04:05.religions are there to unite and assist believers and individuals.
:04:05. > :04:12.Not to cause conflict or division. He said many people miss Court,
:04:12. > :04:16.misinterpret and misuse religion. - - misquote. Peter Wilson joins us
:04:16. > :04:18.now. Why would a man from an Indian Sikh background want to join the
:04:18. > :04:28.English Defence League, which many people regard as a racist
:04:28. > :04:34.organisation? Some people certainly have said that. Mr Singh himself
:04:34. > :04:41.says he has done a lot of research on the internet. He has very strong
:04:41. > :04:46.views about Islam. He felt, he says, at home in this organisation. He
:04:46. > :04:52.has become one of their leading spokesman. But his own community,
:04:52. > :04:56.the Sikh community, have virtually disowned him. A pressure group had
:04:56. > :05:00.calling for his excommunication. That would have to take place in
:05:00. > :05:05.India itself. ID and I think he is significant enough for that to take
:05:05. > :05:11.place. Is Mr Singh right in describing the West Midlands as an
:05:11. > :05:15.EDL stronghold? He had no actual figures. It was all anecdotal. He
:05:15. > :05:20.was talking about a coach loads of people. Certainly a lot of people
:05:20. > :05:26.on the streets of the West Midlands have pro tested on the the EDL
:05:26. > :05:29.banner. It is important to say that a lot of people who feel that
:05:29. > :05:33.perhaps they have not being listened to by mainstream politics,
:05:33. > :05:38.have actually got out onto the streets because they feel
:05:38. > :05:41.themselves that their voice has not been heard. For those of us don't
:05:41. > :05:47.know too much about the English Defence League, where did they
:05:47. > :05:54.spring from? It actually comes from Luton. A lot of football supporters,
:05:54. > :06:00.football hooligan groups, are said to be linked to the EDL. It started
:06:00. > :06:10.three years ago. It has become almost an internet phenomenon.

:07:48. > :07:52.could swap places with her, I would give anything. You cannot believe
:07:52. > :07:57.what has happened. It is really busy along this road. It is a
:07:57. > :08:06.tragic accident. If they had moved the bus stops sooner, it might
:08:06. > :08:09.never have happened. Residents here on the Blurton Farm estate say it's
:08:09. > :08:11.an extremely busy bus route. Teachers do help the children cross

:08:33. > :08:36.the two bus stops right outside the school gates to be moved. If they

:12:43. > :12:45.Protestors claim that the Cube development, which went in into

:14:24. > :14:33.from the administrators. What's going to happen to these people if
:14:33. > :14:37.they don't pay up? I think firstly we need to recognise that of the

:15:00. > :15:05.what their issues are in terms of their changes. We will consider
:15:05. > :15:08.those as would have to develop the completion of the project. They say
:15:08. > :15:17.that delays in building the Cube made things worse - are any

:15:24. > :15:28.us is to complete the building behind me. We had a great deal of

:16:39. > :16:42.He's the man the board want and it seems confirmation of his

:16:52. > :16:59.And if last night's angry demonstration at Villa Park was

:17:05. > :17:10.do not want McLeish! I still do not rate him as a manager. We do not

:17:26. > :17:35.There was an appointment set up that was not fulfilled. I could not

:18:30. > :18:36.There are rumours that he has signed? That is because we thought

:19:01. > :19:01.
:19:01. > :19:09.This is day five. How well will it cope with the fans? -- how will
:19:09. > :19:12.they cope? That is an interesting point. We do not know when a press
:19:12. > :19:19.conference might be. Some people say it will be next week. Others
:19:19. > :19:23.say it might be pushed back a few weeks. Maybe signed a few players.
:19:23. > :19:28.Then present into the media. It will be difficult, not least the
:19:28. > :19:33.fact that Birmingham City will say they want the compensation of 5.4
:19:33. > :19:38.million. It all comes down to results. Should Alex McLeish when
